A Message from the Association Manager As we head into Spring we know many of you are planning maintenance and upgrades to your home! Frequent items that need attention are: Exterior painting of your home, replacing dead sod, trees and other plant materials, and maintenance of mailboxes.

Please remember the dumpsters located at the Windermere amenities center are not for public trash. All personal garbage needs to be picked up from your residence on the service day. Please have all of your receptacle by the curb at 7:00 am on Monday mornings. If you miss a pick up or need a bulk pick up please contact Sanitation Solutions at 770-866-7323 or www.sanatationsolutions.net.

Please be sure to be proactive and plan accordingly for all projects and improvements to your home by submitting an application. Please visit the website and look under the resources tab to download a copy of the application. www.windermerecommunity.net

OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE A COHESIVE AND HARMONIOUS AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING COMMUNITY FOR ALL TO ENJOY!

Applications are required for ALL projects to the exterior of your home or lot. This includes but is not limited to the following: Roof replacements, repainting the exterior of your home, tree removal, installation of basketball goals, trampolines, play sets and fences.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation!

Applications still need to be submitted even if you are using the same paint or roof colors. We would also like to remind you of frequent violations to avoid. Trash cans must be stored out of view of the street. Portable basketball goals must be approved and installed according the guidelines which includes proper placement and screening. Pine straw should be fresh and installed at least twice per year. Edging must be of approved materials.

FREQUENT VIOLATION REMINDERS We understand that no one wants to receive those pesky violation letters! The most frequent violations that can be easily avoided are:

TRASH CANS

MAILBOXES

LAWNS

They must be stored out of view from the street. They cannot be stored on the side of the house or by the garage.

Please make sure that mailboxes are not faded and that mailboxes numbers are easily visible.

We ask that pine straw and mulch are kept looking new and fresh. Your yard is one of the first things that is noticed about your home and an opportunity to enhance the look of your home and lot!

HELP YOUR FAT CAT BECOME A By Susan Tanner, Windermere Pet Sitter

Fit Cat

Our feline friends are experiencing obesity at alarming rates. Owners simply fail to maintain their cat’s diets and provide some exercise. About 58% of U.S. cats are overweight according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. 1 cat in every 3 is obese.

A healthy cat’s diet should provide wet food rather than dry. Natural carnivores need to eat high protein foods. Dry food tends to be very high in carbs, while wet cat foods are proteinrich and contain more water. Never feed them a strictly vegetarian diet.

They are more likely to develop a host of serious health issues such as: Liver Disease High Blood Pressure Type 2 Diabetes Kidney Disease Heart Disease Skin Conditions Respiratory Disease Osteoarthritis

Feed twice daily, controlled portions. Speak with your vet regarding proportions. Cats with certain health issues such as diabetes or tooth loss may require different feeding instructions.

It is much more dangerous to operate on a overweight cat if surgery is in order. They are more likely to die during the procedure. They also are less tolerant of high temperatures and less resistant to contracting an infectious disease. Obese cats are twice as likely to die in middle age between ages 6-12. The 2 main risk factors are: Overeating - Pets allowed to eat at will or those given too much rich food are more like to become heavy. Inactivity - Pets kept in small apartments or small homes are more likely to be overweight than cats in larger homes where they may roam. Below are ideal weight ranges for certain type cats: (per Association for Pet Obesity Prevention): Domestic cats - 8-10 lbs Siamese - 5-10 lbs Persian - 7-12 lbs Main Coon - 10-25 lbs.

Feeding can be challenging with multiple cats. If one shows up late, the other may devour both bowls. Separate them and attempt to feed at the same time, if possible. Ask your vet about a good plan. STOP milk! Milk can be bad for cats. Many are lactose intolerant and can experience vomiting. If they are on a balanced diet, they need NOTHING from milk. Instead provide plenty of fresh water... cleaning and filling their bowl daily. A few simple steps to help with obesity: • Play - laser pointers can be a blast! • Challenge them to find treats hidden in various places in the house. • Limit treats and DO NOT feed many table scraps! Best to stick with cat food anyway to prevent an upset stomach An obese cat may look very cute & cuddly, but health is much more important!

FORSYTH COUNTY

News from the

Forsyth Chamber of Commerce CELEBRATING OUT OF THIS WORLD EDUCATION At 11:30 a.m. on March 8, 2019 at the Forsyth Conference Center, Forsyth County Schools and the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Celebration of Excellence Luncheon, presented by Northside Hospital Forsyth. One of the Chamber’s largest community events, the Celebration of Excellence recognizes the importance of investing in the education of youths. This event honors community businesses (“Partners in Education”) that help schools and students alike throughout the year. It also recognizes some of Forsyth County’s best and most influential teachers – by congratulating all of the Teachers of the Year and announcing the 2019 Forsyth County Teacher of the Year. The Teachers of the Year finalists included: Rhonda Slaughter from Matt Elementary School; Donna Jackson from North Forsyth Middle School; Amy Dykes from North Forsyth High School; Jackie Shirley from Silver City Elementary School; Jessica Nicholson from Whitlow Elementary School; Kim Schreier from South Forsyth Middle School; and Julie Hunt from South Forsyth High School. The Celebration of Excellence aims to recognize what makes Forsyth County schools some of the best in the nation. The system and the entire community benefit from all the wonderful community partners and inspirational teachers. To RSVP to attend the Celebration of Excellence please call 770-887-6461. There is no cost to attend. MOVING FORSYTH FORWARD Thanks to the leadership and vision of the Board of Commissioners, the Chamber of Commerce recently secured the funding to develop a five-year plan that is the largest undertaking of a development plan in our community’s history. It provides a roadmap to substantially increase the commercial investment in Forsyth County and accelerate the pace of creating a more balanced tax digest. Commercial development is a key driver to ensure that residential property taxes stay low while the Chamber continues to support the infrastructure that drives Forsyth County’s economy and quality of life. This plan will create more than 5,000 local new jobs and save tax payers more than $83 million. It includes some very big ideas to direct Forsyth County’s Future ideas like: • Target emerging technologies like the blockchain industry

• Champion hotel and convention center development

• Develop a business park in north Forsyth County

• Expand development on Lake Lanier

• Work with surrounding county partners to develop a regional airport • Designate GA 400 as an interstate highway The Chamber of Commerce and the Development Authority identified TIP Strategies, a consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, to produce this economic development plan in 2018. TIP visited Forsyth County multiple times to hold interviews with dozens of community stakeholders, attend the Chamber events, visit the community’s largest private employers and hold roundtable meetings with educational institutions. The TIP strategists then compiled their research with data analysis and their knowledge of economic development trends and best practices to draft this plan. TIP delivered their recommendations in August to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. These recommendations were supported by an implementation matrix that outlines the actions, priorities and timeframes needed to execute the plan effectively. Starting this year, 2019, the Chamber of Commerce, the County Government and the Development Authority will use these strategies to guide their future efforts in making Forsyth County a great place to live AND do business. The Chamber looks forward to partnering with other community advocates in 2019 to bring TIP’s recommendations to reality. 22

FORSYTH COUNTY

FORSYTH: HOME TO THE NORTH GEORGIA JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT DISCOVERY CENTER With a goal of serving over 15,000 middle-school students, and being 1 of only 2 others, the Junior Achievement Discovery Center of North Georgia opened its doors in 2018. The Center’s aim is to teach middle school students about different career paths and let them experience the act of running a business firsthand. The process of teaching the students in a more dynamic way includes inclass preparation and a one-day simulation that focuses on: • financial literacy skills • team work • entrepreneurship • soft skills Simulations are taught by professionals and those with real-world experience providing students with advice from skilled adults with expertise in various areas. Working and volunteering directly with their peers helps the students to build these skills in a supportive and enthusiastic environment. The entire experience helps them build interest in careers they might consider and expose them to professional development. Forsyth County is proud to be the home of the third Discovery Center in Georgia. The Center is located beside the Forsyth County Schools’ Alliance Academy for Innovation yet welcomes middle school students from Calhoun City Schools, Dawson County Schools, Forsyth County Schools, Gainesville City Schools, Hall County Schools and Lumpkin County Schools. The Junior Achievement Center is constantly seeking adult volunteers interested in playing a part in these students’ experiences at the Center. To learn more about the opportunities please contact Volunteer Partnership Manager, Kyle Redner, at kredner@georgia.ja.org.

Testimonials:

Great camp all around. Of all the camps my 7 year old attended this Summer, this is the one he talks about constantly. The level of programming and circuit building was beyond anything expected. Extremely impressive for kids of this age. Would return again in a heartbeat. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen my son more passionate about anything that he was to attend the Imagine That Minecraft camp. He asked me to wake him up early so that he could get there first thing in the morning and get started. His instructor is amazing and he’s learning a ton. Very high recommendation for this camp. Well put together and organized. It was a first class experience. www.WindermereCommunity.net Windermere Leaflet
