NEWS FROM THE MANAGER

COVENANT CORNER Here is a list of common items that violate the Protective Covenants for Traditions of Braselton. Adherence to the covenants helps to preserve the community wide standard and protect your home values. We appreciate all that our residents do to keep Traditions beautiful! √ Trash cans must be stored out of view from the street or neighboring properties; √ Please submit a modification request for any changes to exterior of your home; √ Please keep your property in a clean, well-kept manner (yard tools, debris etc. should be removed promptly). This is includes the rear of your home when your yard is visible from the golf course, any street or neighboring property; √ Please ensure that your lawn has been properly treated for weeds and fertilized; lawn maintenance should occur on a regular basis and your lawn and landscape beds should be free of weeds and grass and ample pine straw or mulch should be installed at least twice per year; √ Automobiles, trucks and vans must be parked in garages or driveways and may not be parked elsewhere on the property. Unlicensed or inoperable vehicles are considered a nuisance and will be removed. No motorized vehicles are permitted on pathways or unpaved common areas. For example, golf carts should not be operated on sidewalks; √ Recreational vehicles including but not limited to motor homes, boats, jet skis, trailers, motorcycles, minibikes, scooters, go carts, golf carts, campers, buses, commercial trucks and vans must be parked in garages or be subject to

removal from the property. Recreational vehicles may be operated on the streets within the neighborhood by a licensed driver in accordance with Georgia law; √ The exterior of your home (to include the roof) should not have any rotting wood, missing shutters, peeling paint, mold or any other unsightly condition; √ Yard signs are not permitted. If you have a contractor working on your home please make sure they do not place a sign in your yard; √ All pets should be leashed or otherwise controlled by the owner when outside a Unit and shall not be allowed to become a nuisance by barking or other acts. Owners must clean up after their pets. √ Mailboxes should be properly maintained. You should have brass numbers on both sides of your mailbox, paint should not be faded or peeling, and post should be strait. As we have stated in the past, we realize that residents do not like receiving letters from management asking them to correct something that is in violation of the covenants; equally so we do not like having to send requests for compliance but it is a necessary part of managing your property and keeping standards high in your neighborhood. Please help us by proactively keeping your property in compliance. The above list does not constitute a compressive list of covenants but depicts the most common issues that are addressed in the subdivision. Please refer to the Declaration of Covenants for the Traditions of Braselton which can be downloaded from the document center at www.traditionsofbraselton.org.

BUSY LIFE LEADS TO

LETHARGY IN GOD As a believer, have you ever thought about whether you have been too busy for God or His work? Interestingly, a common theme in the Bible is how God paints His relationship with His people; it’s a marriage, as God put it. Thinking about it in those terms, in a marriage if one never sees their spouse, longing and sadness will replace joy, love, and excitement that previously filled those two hearts and that home. When spousal neglect becomes common place, though it is legally (through documents) a marriage, it is actually an arrangement. Throughout the word of God we see the love God declares for His people and by this we should understand that He is not into arrangements but meaningful, true and sincere relationships! Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus tells us, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” As with anything we develop in life, a relationship with God takes work. We practice what we want to perfect, we exercise what we want to strengthen, and we feed what we want to grow. So, where are we in this regarding our spiritual lives? Spiritual lethargy will set it when we are not active in spiritual living; we eventually become indolent in spiritual matters. Believers partake in spiritual exercise by becoming devoted to prayer, Bible study, fasting, and meditation on the scriptures. Once spiritual strength is acquired, the ability to live out and apply God’s laws and principles to our lives becomes a reality. Sadly, many Christians believe a relationship with God only requires profession and no active involvement. Instead, they assume that God is a partner to their lack of commitment and ungodly living. We must repent and change if Jesus is Lord and Savior! 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 King James Version (KJV) “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” In reading this one may think to themselves that, “God knows my heart.” However, the scripture teaches in Jeremiah 17:9 New Living Translation (NLT) “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? Far too many confessed Christians do not live any different than they did before Christ. Prioritize your relationship with God. Pursue Him like a lost treasure and repent of spiritual lethargy. Consider what the Lord says, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth (Rev. 3:15-16 KJV). Join us for Bible study on Wednesdays at Owner’s Clubhouse at 7pm! COMMUNITY NEWS

Is Feeding Ducks Bread Bad? By Melissa Mayntz, Birding / Wild Bird Expert www.about.com

Many birders were first introduced to the joys of avian wildlife by feeding ducks bread at a local park or pond. While we may have grown up thinking this was an environmentally responsible and humane way to dispose of old or stale bread, feeding the ducks is actually unhealthy and potentially dangerous for the birds.

• Diseases: Feeding ducks bread can increase the spread of diseases in two ways. First, a carbohydrate-rich diet leads to greater defecation, and bird feces easily harbor bacteria responsible for numerous diseases, including avian botulism. Second, moldy bread can cause aspergillosis, a fatal lung infection that can decimate entire duck and waterfowl flocks.

What Bread Is to Ducks Bread and similar products such as crackers, chips, donuts and popcorn are a great source of carbohydrates but they offer little other nutritional value for ducks, waterfowl and other birds. In fact, bread is the equivalent to junk food for the birds, and too much bread can lead to excessive weight and malnutrition as well as many other problems. Offered in extreme moderation, bread is not harmful to ducks or birds, but that moderation is hard to judge. While one family may only feed the ducks once every few weeks, there are many other families and individuals who are also feeding the ducks, which leads to a diet based almost solely on unhealthy bread products. Environmentally conscious birders will refrain from offering any bread to ducks to avoid dietary problems and other issues caused by a carbohydrate-rich diet.

• Pest Attraction: Rotting supplies of food leftover from sated ducks will attract other unwelcome pests such as rats, mice and insects. These pests can also harbor additional diseases that can be dangerous to humans.

Why Bread is Bad for Ducks Not only can bread be fattening to ducks and make it harder for them to fly and otherwise evade predators, feeding ducks bread can also lead to other problems. • Duckling Malnutrition: In an area where ducks are regularly fed bread, ducklings will not receive adequate nutrition for proper growth and development. Furthermore, because ducks will naturally seek out an easy food source such as human handouts, ducklings will not learn to forage for natural foods as easily. • Overcrowding: Where an easy food source is abundant, ducks and other waterfowl will lay more eggs and the pond or lake will become overcrowded. This makes it more difficult for the birds to seek out healthier food sources and increases the likelihood of territorial aggression. • Pollution: When too much bread is offered to ducks, not all of it will be eaten. The soggy, uneaten bread is unsightly and rotting bread can create noxious odors as well as lead to greater algae growth that can clog natural waterways. This concentrates the pollution and can eventually eradicate fish and other life in the vicinity.

12

JUNE 2019

• Loss of Natural Behavior: When birds become accustomed to handouts, they lose their natural fear of humans and may become aggressive in order to get more food. Their loss of fear can also cause other dangers, such as a willingness to cross busy roads in order to reach picnickers and other likely sources of food. Bread Alternatives Wild ducks and waterfowl can live longer, healthier lives by relying on natural food sources such as aquatic plants, seeds, grasses and insects rather than taking handouts from wellmeaning humans. If you still want to feed the ducks – and doing so can be an enchanting experience – there are many healthier alternatives to offer them instead of bread. Great foods to feed ducks include: • Grapes cut in half • Cracked corn, barley, oats, birdseed or other grains • Frozen peas that have been defrosted • Duck feed pellets available from farm supply stores Don’t Waste Bread For many people, feeding ducks bread is not only a way to interact with wildlife, but it is also a handy way to dispose of old, stale or moldy bread. There are many other useful ways to dispose of unwanted bread, however, including… • Adding bread to a compost pile to create natural mulch and fertilizer • Trying stale bread recipes such as bread pudding or homemade dressing and stuffing • Toasting stale bread for homemade croutons or garlic toast Of course, the best way to use up stale bread without feeding it to ducks is to avoid having any leftover bread in the first place. Bread can be easily frozen until needed, or birders can monitor their menus and shopping to ensure there are no leftover products that would be tempting to feed to ducks. Traditions of Braselton

Please contact Lynn Kolb at 706-824-0247 or galynn20@yahoo.com for more information. Every Tuesday, Lynn sends a text to interested parties asking for a response by Saturday morning. All are welcome to join in and they look forward to adding more couples as the weather warms up. *Couples on Sunday – Noon during winter.

LADIES’ GOLF GROUP

Currently, the ladies have two standing tee times Monday thru Friday starting at 8:30 AM. If you are interested in joining the Ladies Golf Group (even occasionally), please email Pam Poppe at ppoppe@mindspring.com if you wish to be included. Each Friday, Pam sends an email to the group asking which days you are interested in golfing during the coming week. She only asks for a 48-hour notice so she can add or cancel tee times. Don’t worry about handicaps since the skill levels vary widely. These women golf for fun! If the morning times don’t work for you, please let Pam know if you are interested in playing 9 holes at other times of the day.

SENIOR MEN’S GOLF GROUP

The senior men gather to play an organized format of stroke play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You never know who you will get paired with on these days, so it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow neighbors and make new friends. On Thursdays, it’s just pair-up and play as you like. The course is closed on Tuesdays. Currently, our block of tee times starts at 10:00 AM. As the weather warms up, our standing tee tie will move to 9:00 AM. You can play as often or as little as you like; just show up at least 15 minutes before the first tee time. This is a social group with members of varying skill levels. Every spring and fall the men gather at the Club Grill for a fun evening with their significant others. For more information, contact Steve Morrell at 1-706-654-6034 (H) or on his cell at 770-861-610. You can also email him at shmorrell44@gmail.com

EMPTY NESTERS COMMITTEE

CINCO DE Derby The day was Saturday, May 4, 2019. The place was the Owners’ clubhouse. The Empty Nesters came together to cheer on their favorite horse in the Derby, have a fiesta and just plain fun. We combined the theme this year because our event was actual derby day and the next day was Cinco de Mayo. So why not celebrate both. We thank the HOA for getting the TV functional so we could watch the derby. Our decorations were like minded as well. They ranged from our Fiesta table tops to derby hats and anything horses. We introduced our newest members, Eileen and Mark Kemp. Our first order of business was watching the Kentucky Derby while we munched on appetizers brought by our members. Thanks to the Patterson’s’ for their tech services in finding the right TV station. Several even wore their derby hats. We watched in amazement as the horses ran the muddy track, slipping and sliding, bumping, etc. As we continued to watch re-plays, the winners’ disqualification came as a surprise ending. Next, we moved on to some yummy food. Hot browns prepared by Margaret Hanson and a whole Taco bar prepared by Helen Parsek. The drink of the night was homemade Sangria with fresh fruit soaked in brandy. The desserts brought by members satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth. Once we were stuffed and had shared many a good laugh we started playing games. I know we sound like a bunch of kids playing games but even the kid’s games get very competitive. A lot of encouragement, cheering and jeering going on. We started with Pin the Tail on the horse. While being spun around three times made many of us very dizzy, it did make for some interesting pinnings. Several did not believe the spinner was leading them in the right direction, just to throw them off (we only picked on a few). The winners from each of the four teams were then in a pin-off. Beth Grimes won by a tail.

16

JUNE 2019

Our next game was the horseshoes. We each threw the horseshoes 6 times. A ringer would be best, then a leaner, then closest. We only had one ringer so no play off was needed. The winner again was Beth Grimes. Emptynesters’ were beginning to wonder if she had been practicing before we started (hah)! The third game was the horse race. Everyone picked their favorite horse and rolled the dice to see how far their horse would move on the track. Lots of wishing on the roll of the dice and heckling those high rollers. The winners from each team were then in a race-off. We still had ties after the first round with one dropping out of the race. So we had one last race. Don’t you know those horses were getting tired! The overall winner was Ray Hansen by a nose. The finale of the night was the donkey piñata with his garland of ceremonial of roses. Thanks to some ingenuity on our EN committee, we had the piñata hanging high off of a long pole and ladder. We blindfolded each player, spun them around, lined then up and gave them one whack at it. Since Ray won the horse race we thought it only fitting he got to go first. Although several missed completely, several did manage to hit it pretty hard. But it was just not coming down; although a few roses did fly off. Not sure how anyone knew where to swing with all of the encouragement and yelling out directions. The best swing of the night went to Bill Patterson with a great baseball swing, albeit under the piñata! Finally, Mark Kemp was able to smash the piñata in half much to the delight of our group. We even had men racing for the candy just like kids. So much fun to watch. We continued to party throughout the night just enjoying sangria or drink of choice and talking to friends. If you’d like to join us please email emptynesters@ traditionsofbraselton.org with name(s), address, best phone number and best email address. Hope to see you soon. WE REAP WHAT WE SOW

H E A LT H & F I T N E S S Summer is finally here, I think! And with it, the itch to get out in the garden playing, digging, planting, and tending. Over time, I’ve been trying to get more perennials in the ground. Annuals still go in a few small areas around the house or in a couple of hanging baskets. That way I figure less work in the garden even though I do enjoy gardening. Okay, what does this have to do with fitness? Keep reading…. A longtime friend of mine Ellen and I, have recently reconnected. I invited her over to see our house and take her out to lunch for her birthday. She showed up with a sweet “house warming” gift of the most beautiful sunflowers I have ever seen. They had bright orange petals and purple leaves and stems. Absolutely breathtaking! So, I put the flowers in a pretty vase and we skipped off the lunch at Subway, where I was a little disappointed because they were out of veggie patties! No really, they are good! Anyway, I have always admired sunflowers but never tried to plant and grow them. So, this spring, after being inspired by Ellen’s gift, I decided to plant and grow some sunflower seeds and bought a couple of seed packets. I surveyed out a perfect full sun area to plant them and got out there sweating, digging, planting and thinking…. This is hard work. Will the seeds even sprout? Well, the packets were just a couple of bucks. Would the birds eat the seeds? Would they look as pretty as the flowers on the packet? Wouldn’t it be nice if I could have beautiful flowers now instead of having to wait 3 months? See where I am going? We reap what we sow in gardening, life and how we treat our bodies. If we are physically active and eat healthy, we will have a body (and mind!) that is healthy and fit. It won’t happen overnight though. Results will come but I have to wait for the harvest. Perhaps you’ve been active and eating right but still are not seeing the results you want. You will but enjoy the immediate benefits from exercise such as reducing stress and feeling better as you wait. Believe it or not, not all my clients want to lose weight. They just want to feel good, build their immune system and/or prevent disease and illness. It would also be nice if we could just maintain a desired level of fitness and not have to work out anymore, but that’s not how are bodies are made. When we plant a garden, we have to tend, prune, fertilize and water it. So, please let me encourage you to start some they of physical activity today. It’s never too late! Plant those seeds and keep going forward expecting to reach your goals, eventually reaping a harvest of good health and well-being. Be patient and don’t get discouraged if you don’t see the results when you want. They will come! If you get off track, get back on the next day or the next day but don’t quit. And, if I don’t get sunflowers this summer, I will try again next summer! My and my client’s experiences have shown me that if we put in the labor and work of being active and eating healthy (sowing), we will be physically fit and well for life (harvest). CREATING AN INVITING

First Impression “First impressions are important. While a book should never be judged by its cover, many people are unlikely to read it if the cover is uninviting.” ~ Unknown We don’t have to tell you that life at Traditions of Braselton is truly one-of-a-kind. However, endeavoring to illustrate and communicate that to someone who has never seen or experienced it firsthand can be somewhat of a challenge. In addition to trying to make an outstanding first impression on those who might consider living here, we also want to make that first impression as inviting as possible. The best way to do that is through a beautifully crafted and incredibly engaging website. Traditions of Braselton Realty was proud to team up with the web designers and developers at Rearview Advertising to create the online embodiment of everyday luxury in a country club setting. The result is not only lifestyle-centric and easy to use for anyone in search of a beautiful new home in North Metro Atlanta, but the new website at www.DiscoverTraditionsBraselton.com is the best first impression imaginable for our masterplanned community. DID YOU KNOW…? An estimated 90% of people use the internet to begin their new home search. If a prospective new neighbor is searching the internet and comes across the new Traditions of Braselton website, we want that experience to be so positive that they decide to take a closer look by paying a visit to the community. Some of the ways that we’ve accomplished that in the new website include a broader “Big Picture” view. It’s not just about the expertly rendered homes that fit within a variety of price ranges, it’s also about the distinctive lifestyle, resort-quality amenities, picturesque landscape and Main Street Charm of both Braselton and Jefferson. We’ve infused a balance of images that showcase the range of homes available at Traditions along with lifestyle shots that are reflective of life for a Traditions of Braselton homeowner – regardless of what stage of life they might be, from growing families to empty nesters and everything in between. We invite you to take your own tour of the NEW www. DiscoverTraditionsBraselton.com and let us know what you think! And DON’T FORGET! To stay up-to-date on the latest community news – between issues of the Traditions newsletter – follow the Traditions of Braselton Facebook and Instagram pages.
