LOCAL PROGRAM GOES BEYOND BABYSITTING BASICS Article written by JULIA GROCHOWSKI of Appen Media Group
EXPERIENCE RELIABLE BABY SITTER
For Barri Zehner, it’s not just about babysitting. It’s about life. Zehner, an oncology nurse at Northside Hospital Forsyth, is the founder and CEO of Babysitting 101 Plus to teach children and teenagers, ages 10-16, how to babysit responsibly. But unlike most babysitting classes, this program helps teach students why a particular skill or approach is used and not just how to do them, Zehner said. Classes are eight hours each and take one day to complete. They cover babysitting basics, including feeding children, naps and bedtimes, dealing with misbehavior, first aid needs, and emergencies. All participants are trained and certified in CPR through the American Heart Association. But, Babysitting 101 Plus also goes beyond the basics.

“From the second the kids walk through the door, they are immediately thrown into use of their soft skills, like verbal communication, with others in the room,” Zehner said. “We practice use of these skills, discussing the impact our body language as well as spoken language has on others. This is a skill that is vital for success in life and used throughout the babysitting experience.” The program also discusses safety concerns that may occur outside of

babysitting, such as peer pressure, the drug triangle and human trafficking. “Many parents are afraid to talk to their kids about these things, or the kids think their parents are ‘stupid,’ so they tune them out when they try,” Zehner said. “Hearing about this from another adult is absolutely beneficial, and better yet, it’s in a setting with less kids, so they are more comfortable asking questions and discussing their feelings and understanding of this scary reality. The kids take the floor on these topics. If they want to delve in deeper, we do. If they seem fearful, it stays brief and basic.” Zehner added that she covers these topics and skills to help babysitters become better role models for all children they encounter. “By the time my students leave, they understand not just how to babysit safely, but also that they are huge influence in the lives of the children they will watch,” she said.
The work can be long and challenging at times, Zehner said, but incredibly rewarding. “When I get that call or email from a parent telling me that their child used skills learned in this class to save a life — and it has happened multiple times — that is my reward,” she said. “When parents tell me that their kids used knowledge from this class to better themselves as a person and to positively impact others in their lives, from the kids they babysit to their peers and even adults, that is my reward. When I am told this class had a positive impact on a child, on a family, on a life, that is my reward.” For more information about Babysitting 101 Plus or to enroll in an upcoming class, visit babysitting101plus.com.
Zehner, a certified instructor for the American Heart Association, first created the class almost 10 years ago when she heard about how a Boy Scout she taught CPR to had saved his troop leader’s life. From there, her mission grew to train young people about CPR, choking hazards and how to be good babysitters. She has since trained over 2,000 children. Each class is customized to the needs of the students, and Zehner said she is determined to work personally with each attendee. www.WindermereCommunity.net

FORSYTH COUNTY’S FIRST CID BECOMES A REALITY The long-awaited South Forsyth Community Improvement District (CID) is now a reality! After securing new local legislation and the few remaining votes needed from commercial property owners, the CID was certified in early June with a Board of Directors elected on June 20th. This is the first CID in Forsyth County and is centered at the interchange of GA400 and McFarland Road (Exit 12). CIDs have emerged as significant centers of influence in the Metro Atlanta region. By utilizing self-imposed tax revenues from commercial businesses within their districts they are dramatically changing their communities in many ways. From bold new infrastructure improvements to traffic mitigation, private security and the transformation of commercial streets into pedestrian friendly corridors to the creation of new parks, trails and greenspace, CIDs are enhancing the urban and suburban landscape. Among other things, CIDs leverage private dollars to create public ventures. They return control to stakeholders, improve the quality of life in their districts and dramatically strengthen their tax base. Major corporations have taken notice of the impact of CIDs and have specifically chosen to locate or expand in areas supported by CIDs. We can expect to see some substantial improvements to the aesthetic appeal at Exit 12 as a result of the new South Forsyth CID. In fact, approximately 50 percent of Digital Ignition members are former Fortune 500 executives who are creating new companies with real-world business acumen and key industry connections. “Expanding Digital Ignition’s services to foster this powerful level of entrepreneurship is something our leadership understands,” stated Joanne Sanders, President of EWISE Communications and General Manager of Digital Ignition. “We are committed to building the right partnerships and initiatives to provide best-in-class business growth.” In collaboration with Forward Forsyth, Digital Ignition has increased its occupancy and continues to build a network of innovative businesses. “Today, a large part of success is driven by an organization’s ability to work together and adapt to technological advancements,” stated Scott Evans, Senior Technology Project Manager at the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce. “With its expanded services, Digital Ignition is a tremendous resource for startups and existing companies that are focused on innovation and growth.” Digital Ignition’s business model also aligned with the objectives of other key entities such as the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) at Georgia Tech and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). As a result: • ATDC offers on-site product development and commercialization support to members across a variety of industries. • GDOT enlisted Digital Ignition to spearhead and host their first Smart Vehicle Tech Challenge in the Fall of 2019. program, the first of its kind, will leverage Digital Ignition’s talent pool to unlock data opportunities that can be incorporated in smart cities and connected vehicles. “The quality of the companies at Digital Ignition is really inspiring,” said Benjamin Andrews, Statewide Program Manager at ATDC. “Creating a strategic partnership made sense the first day we visited,” he added. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) mirrored that thought. “Without a doubt, Digital Ignition’s leadership team understands the power of community collaboration, the details behind technology and data, as well as the importance of purpose-driven innovation,” stated John Hibbard, Operations Division Director at GDOT. “We are excited to be working with them on our first Smart Vehicle Tech Challenge this fall.” To learn more about Digital Ignition and schedule a tour, please visit digitalignition.com.

SWIM TEAM NEWS
WINDERMERE WAVES 2019 SEASON
Our Windermere Waves finished off their season on June 29th. It has been a fun and exciting time with the kids competing in 5 dual meets throughout the season and then having a strong showing at the County Championships on June 28th and 29th. We had many swimmers competing for the first time this season with their teammates cheering for them at each race, and we also had our seasoned/experienced swimmers swimming hard and enjoying the fun of competition, while hearing all the chants and cheers along the way. Our summer league season always seems to come and go so quickly. It is a busy few weeks but a great way to start off the summer. The kids make some great memories while excelling in a sport that is beneficial for many reasons and is something they will always use whether in competition or just for fun.
We thank our Windermere neighborhood for all their support! Happy Summer!

PET NEWS
WHY IS MY DOG Dogs itch for many different reasons and it’s not uncommon for it to be worse at night when the house is quiet. Every dog needs to scratch sometimes and that is completely normal. However, when it gets out of hand - constant licking, scratching, biting and chewing to the point of wounds then it becomes a symptom of an underlying pathology. Itching is the second most common reason people take their dogs to the vet (gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea tops the list). The medical term for scratching related to excessive itching is PRURITUS. The causes may be quite complex but there are 2 main reasons why pups itch. The 1st has to do with the condition of the skin itself: Is it infected? Is it too oily? Is it too dry? Of these three, dry skin is a frequent occurrence. The 2nd major cause of pruritus is allergies. DRY SKIN Dry skin is a very common cause. Dogs who live in regions with dry humidity are more likely to have dry skin, which is pretty easy to recognize. When you part his hair, you will see flakes of dandruff in the undercoat and the skin itself maybe be cracked and tough. The slightest stimulation of the skin - your gentle touch may provide your dog to scratch violently. Dry skin can be influenced not only by environmental factors, but also by diet. Commercial pet foods may process out the good oils that contribute to healthy skin and a lustrous coat. Dry foods have an even more dehydrating effect on skin and hair and also stimulate increased thirst, which only partially compensates for the drying mature of these diets. If you must feed dry foods to your pup, then by all means add digestive enzymes to his meals. Enzymes improve the release of nutrients and beneficial probiotic bacteria also aids in the digestive process. Probiotics also help with allergies! A healthy digestive system absorbs fluids more readily from the food your dog
eats, thus improving hydration and increasing the moisture levels of the skin and haircoat. ALLERGIES Another cause of itchy skin is allergies. They may make his skin dry, greasy or slightly dry and oily and are accompanied by frequent scratching, licking or chewing. Vets are seeing more allergic dogs these days. Theory includes aggressive vaccination protocols that many pups have been subjected to, poor breeding practices and the feeding of processed foods. ALWAYS, ALWAYS consult your vet with any excessive scratching and of course, any other issues of major concern. It may simply be a matter of changing his diet or adding a healthy additive to his food, but please do not let him/her suffer!

Testimonials:
Great camp all around. Of all the camps my 7 year old attended this Summer, this is the one he talks about constantly. The level of programming and circuit building was beyond anything expected. Extremely impressive for kids of this age. Would return again in a heartbeat. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen my son more passionate about anything that he was to attend the Imagine That Minecraft camp. He asked me to wake him up early so that he could get there first thing in the morning and get started. His instructor is amazing and he’s learning a ton. Very high recommendation for this camp. Well put together and organized. It was a first class experience. www.WindermereCommunity.net Windermere Leaflet
