Welcome to Dawson County Having spent a fair share of my adulthood in the big city life, I told myself I wouldn’t move back to a small town – until I fell in love with Dawson County. There was something about this particular place that was warm and inviting. As editor of the Dawson County News, I’ve been able to meet the longtime locals and the newer residents like myself, and through the course of this magazine I got to ask people “why do you love Dawson County?” Their answers were unsurprising to those of us who have spent a little time in town. An overwhelming majority said it’s the friendly people and the small town feel that makes Dawson County a great place to live. You’ll find that people are quick to lend you a hand, pay it forward and support one another. You’ll also find that this county has so much to offer in terms of activities and fun for the whole family. It’s true that there’s something for everyone. If you’re looking for some fast-paced thrills, head down to the Atlanta Motorsports Park to race go-karts that boast 55mph speeds. A little too fast for you? Take a tour of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame to learn more about Dawson County’s illustrious racing history. While you’re there, stop by the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery next door to wet your whistle with the drink that put Dawsonville and NASCAR on the map.

For those who love the quiet rural life, Dawson County has plenty of nature for you to enjoy. If hiking is your passion, plan a trip to Amicalola Falls State Park to see one of the most Instagrammed places in Georgia. Speaking of Instagram, head up to Fausett Farms to pose with the sunflowers in the fall for a selfie. Dawson County offers plenty of activities at its parks including the Rotary Island Splash Pad at Rock Creek Park. The City of Dawsonville is also working on the completion of its Main Street Park in the heart of the city, which will include an inclusive destination playground, a dog park, walking trails and an amphitheater. And for those who enjoy more of the big city life, Dawson County offers plenty of shops at the North Georgia Premium Outlets conveniently located on Ga. 400. Whether you plan to visit or have decided to make Dawson County your home, we welcome you to our community and hope you’ll find Dawson as awesome as we do.

SPLOST
ESPLOST
SPLOST stands for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, a one percent sales tax that was adopted by the Dawson County Board of Commissioners as a resolution and approved by the citizens in a general election. It is a six year collection which began in July 2015. Funds are allocated to both the county and city of Dawsonville. The county receives 85 percent of collections and the city of Dawsonville receives 15 percent. Each entity is responsible for programming and managing its own SPLOST funds. SPLOST dollars approved for FY2019 include the rehabilitation of the multiuse field and pavilion at Veterans Memorial Park, vehicles and equipment for the sheriff’s office, the Sweetwater Fire Station project, construction of the new Public Works Complex and fire truck payments.
The Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) is a 1 percent sales tax that is utilized by Dawson County Schools to fund capital projects. Some of the projects that have been funded through the current ESPLOST include the Dawson County High School’s Performing Arts Center, JROTC facility and the College and Career Academy. Wireless networks, iPads, faculty laptops, smartboards, computer labs and Apple TVs across all campuses in Dawson County have been purchased and updated with ESPLOST funds. In order for ESPLOST to be added to the ballot, the superintendent may ask the board of education to consider calling for an ESPLOST referendum. It must be voted upon and approved by the board. A vote to continue ESPLOST was approved by the school board in July, and citizens will have the chance to cast their vote in November 2019.

It’d be hard for you to find another small town as rich with history as Dawsonville. Before Dawson County was formed in December of 1857 from parts of Lumpkin, Gilmer and Pickens counties, this area was Creek territory. For years before white settlers moved to the north Georgia terrain, what we now know as Dawson County belonged to Creek Indians until
26
| Awesome Dawson 2019
a war between the Creeks and Cherokee established the area as Cherokee territory. To this day, we still use Native American names for some of the county’s most famous landmarks. Amicalola Falls, regarded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia, is Cherokee for “tumbling waters.” The Etowah River, the main water supply for the county, means “town” or “tribe” in Creek.
But once a shiny nugget of gold was discovered just up the way, it didn’t take long for settlers to arrive in droves in hopes of striking it rich in the north Georgia hills. Before the California Gold Rush of 1849, Georgia had the claim to fame with the first gold rush in the 1830s. In Lumpkin County, Benjamin Parks made a startling discovery that paved the way for thousands of settlers to make a home for themselves in Dawson County. Word traveled fast and soon droves of prospectors were clamoring at the chance to strike it rich, many of which settled in the areas surrounding Dahlonega including the future site of Dawson County. When news of gold in California reached the ears of Georgia miners, many decided to pack their bags and embarked on the chance for fortune and glory in the west, though many were content to stay in the temperate north Georgia mountains making a meager living as either farmers or miners.
It certainly wasn’t a glamorous existence as the new settlers to the area worked to carve out livelihoods for themselves. By the time Dawson County was created as the 119th county of Georgia, census records show many families were small farmers, growing small plots of corn, wheat, oats, and of course, cotton. Dawson County was one of the fortunate areas in Georgia during the Civil War. When conflict broke out, the county was spared from the battlefield, although like other southern communities, many husbands and sons were sent to the front lines. After the war ended, the south was ravaged by poverty and bloodshed. It was time to pick up the pieces and make a living once more, but it certainly wasn’t easy. By the turn of the century and with the invention of the automobile, Dawson County made a name for itself with its illegal production of moonshine. To make ends meet, many people turned to making moonshine as a way to feed their families.
Awesome Dawson 2019 | 27
Now
DAWSON Moonshine, an illegal high-proof alcohol typically made with corn mash, was a quick but albeit risky way to bring home the bacon. During the Prohibition Era (1919-1933), moonshiners sold their ‘shine, or “White Lightning,” on the black market to buyers in Atlanta. Trippers were responsible for hauling the illegal homebrew without getting caught by the revenue agents, known as the Revenuers. Secretly producing and transporting moonshine was dangerous in itself, but once the Revenuers
28

caught wind of the Trippers, suddenly the illicit trade added an element of racing to shake the authorities off their tails. The “Moonshine Capital of the World” became responsible for the evolution of stock car racing. Bets were taken on whose tripper and liquor cars were the fastest. By the late 1930s and early 1940s, stock car racing became a popular sport and paved the way for NASCAR. To this day, Dawson County is still prevalent in the NASCAR world. Some of the earliest stock

car heroes hailing from Dawsonville were Lloyd Seay, Roy Hall, Gober Sosebee and Bernard Long. Then the Elliott family arrived on the scene in the 1970s when “Wild Bill from Dawsonville” became a household name in NASCAR. Now, Bill’s son, Chase Elliott, is making a name for himself and carrying on the family legacy in the NASCAR circuit. Dawson County still holds its NASCAR roots near and dear to its heart. At the Dawsonville Pool Room, memorabilia from decades of racing adorns
the walls and a siren always sounds when Chase wins a race. Just down the road, the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame sits next to Dawsonville City Hall, full of rooms of photographs and memorabilia collected from the earliest days of racing to now. The county certainly looks different from its humble beginnings, first as Native American territory then as a hotbed for moonshine and stock cars, but its citizens’ commitment to being good neighbors willing to lend a helping hand is what keeps attracting people to this rich area.

The Brians Have lived in Dawson for 8 years Why Dawson? Before it was really growing, it was a really small town. But even as it grows, there are still pockets of that small town life just a few minutes off of 400. We grew up in Forsyth, but moved up here for the schools. Favorite Hidden Gem? Edge of the World
