Salvation Army reopens shelter The Salvation Army, a homeless shelter in Gainesville, reopened in early November following extensive renovations. (L-R) Major Berry Corbit, Major Alejandro Castillo and Major Nelinda Castillo. The shelter provides a safe haven for the ever-growing homeless population. Kelly Williams, Salvation Army's director of social services, said “Salvation Army's shelter closing resulted in a big hole in that big village of service people that take care of our homeless population. We are glad to be back and operational.” The shelter can house over 50 people and demand has drastically increased in recent years due to increased living costs and a lack of affordable housing. The Salvation Army is an evangelical Christian organization that serves as a homeless shelter, food pantry and provides job training. Facebook.com/TSAGainesville
