Barnett named Brenau's 11th President
The Brenau University Board of Trustees announced that Dr. David L. Barnett, former interim president, has been named the 11th president of Brenau University.
"Having served in various roles at Brenau for 18 years, no one knows this institution better – including the best ways to keep us moving forward – than David Barnett," said Mike Smith, Board Chairman. “As Brenau celebrates its 145th year, we appreciate President Barnett’s dedication to the university and the leadership he provides as we continue our shared vision for the future.”
While the Brenau community knows President Barnett in his former role as executive vice president and chief financial officer of the university, a focus on students has been the underpinning of his career in higher education. Barnett teaches a graduate-level course in the College of Education and previously served as interim dean of Brenau’s College of Education.
Before coming to Brenau in 2005, he was academic compliance officer and associate dean of students at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. He previously held positions at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky, Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Meadowlark Coffee
JP and Sommer McKenzie opened Meadowlark Coffee in 2021, but their love for coffee began much earlier. By visiting coffee shops across the country, they were able to experience the coffee industry in a new light. After moving to Gainesville, they realized the community was under-served when it came to specialty third wave coffee. Meadowlark is located on the Downtown Gainesville Square where they offer a focused menu of specialty coffee beverages, matcha, chai, and other teas. Their goal is to highlight each flavor and experience of coffee by sourcing the highest qualities ingredients. Keep up with Meadowlark by following them on social media platforms or visiting the shop at 109 Bradford Street in Gainesville. meadowlarkcoffee.shop

J& J Foods
What customers consider first about J&J Foods is service immediately followed by great prices and the freshest of meats and produce. Most companies say that customer service is important. At J&J, they believe that HOW they serve customers is most important. They anticipate needs and look for opportunities to provide a higher level of service than is expected. J&J Foods is all about families, as they've been a Wiley family owned and operated business since 1976. The owners – Johnnie Wiley, Darrell Wiley, and Vickie Wiley Willis – are humbled by the continued loyalty and support of the communities they serve, and 35 years later, J&J is still committed to honoring the principles on which the company was founded. To those families that continue to shop at J&J, teach their children to shop in their stores, and encourage their friends to shop at J&J – they remain truly grateful and pledge to continue to work to be deserving of customer loyalty. jandjfoods.com

Arbor Day 2024
I Speak for the Trees Poem
by Sahara Alvarez, 5th Grader, Centennial Arts Academy
They stand tall and proud, rooted deep in the earth,
But Friends, the trees are in danger, their fate uncertain, Deforestation runs rampant, a devastating spree,
I speak for the trees, for their voice must be heard, To protect their existence, take action, spread the word.
Together we can make a difference, bring a change,
Winning Vision 2030 Student Art by Alayna Waldrep, a 3rd Grader at Riverbend Elementary.
The Chamber's Annual Arbor Day Celebration in February at Elachee Nature Science Center was sponsored by the Hall County Master Gardeners, Keep Hall Beautiful and Georgia Power. Festivities included the annual student art and essay contest recognition. Over 100 student entries were submitted for the “I Speak for the Trees” Contest. The program also included a joint city/county Tree City USA proclamation.
So let us stand united, hand in hand, Protecting the trees, the guardians of our land. For they are more than just silent witnesses, They are life-fivers, providers, and nature’s bliss.
I speak for our beloved trees, They are here to give us what we need.
Although what I have said is only a potential dream, Somebody like you or me, can change the world. Make it gleam!
Remember that quate, by Dr. Suess, “UNLESS someone like you cares a while awful lot, Nothing is going to get better, it’s not.”
I speak for the trees, and I hope you will too, For their survival depends on me and you. Let’s cherish their presence, their royalty so rare, And ensure that they grow, for generations to share.
