Saluting Small Business For over 50 years, National Small Business Week has recognized the contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small businesses. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. Greater Hall Chamber membership is comprised of some 90% small businesses and seeks to provide resources and programs to grow business and create jobs. More on page 4.
Over 1,200 runners, walkers, cheerleaders, friends and fellow workers participated in the 12th Annual Chamber Chase on March 28 at Riverside Military Academy! Highlights on page 12.

From the Chair
The Economic Impact of Small Business The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) National Small Business Week is this month (May 5-11) and recognizes the job creators that fuel our economy – the nation’s 30 million small businesses. Like the SBA, the Greater Hall Chamber empowers entrepreneurs and small business owners with the resources and support they need to grow their business. We fully support the SBA’s annual celebration of entrepreneurship and innovation as well as our own small businesses, comprising some 90% of Chamber membership.
Carol Burrell President & CEO, Northeast Georgia Health System; Chair, Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce
Small businesses are integral parts of a local economy. When you spend money at a local store, that money goes to pay a worker in our community, who, in turn, is likely to spend money at another neighborhood business. The more that small businesses leverage their potential to support each other, the greater their capacity to create a thriving local business community. When we spend dollars locally, we create jobs locally and keep our money close to home.
Thriving small businesses create thriving communities. Neighborhoods, education and schools improve. Quality of life improves, drawing more people to move into the community – and more small businesses to invest in it. It’s a virtuous cycle. Beyond the direct economic effects of buying locally, small businesses offer a community character and are generally more shielded against economic distress. Small businesses add diversity across a wide range of business – such as retailers that are focused on selling various types of goods and service companies that might provide everything from fresh flowers or dry cleaning to web design services. Along with our community partners – Small Business Access Partners, Northeast Georgia SCORE, UGA Small Business Development Center and the Business Incubator at Brenau University – your Chamber is providing our small businesses vital resources. From Small Business Seminars to Social Media Marketing Workshops, programs that can significantly impact business are available consistently throughout the year. In 2017, the Chamber CERTIFIED Small Business Partner program was implemented and 25 businesses were certified. In 2018, 23 businesses joined the group.

When small business succeeds, communities succeed – making our community better tomorrow than it is today. Remember to patronize our small businesses at all times, and during National Small Business Week – add a special thank you. Recognized at the Greater Hall Chamber's January Board of Directors meeting, 23 organizations were certified as Chamber Small Business Partners. Attend six Chamber Small Business Seminars and become certified. See page 4 for a listing of upcoming seminars. Details: Amanda Lewis, 770-5326206 x 111 or email alewis@ghcc.com

Certified Small Business Partners Jacobs Media celebrates 70 years Jacobs Media, parent company of WDUN, AccessWDUN and 94.5 The Lake welcomed the community on April 2 for an anniversary celebration and tours of the business. On that same day 70 years earlier, the late John Jacobs Jr. flipped the switch at its studios on Main Street in Gainesville to take WDUN live. Over its 70-year history, dial positions have changed, an FM station was added along with AccessWDUN, an online local newspaper that boasted over 3 million visitors in 2018. The company also operated Wide Travel Service for 35 years. "As our tag line suggests, we’ve always tried to be 'At Your Service',” said John W. (Jay) Jacobs III, owner and CEO of the company, who took over operations from his father in 1988. "Our goal for 70 years has been to serve the community, our listeners, and our advertisers with honesty, integrity and a high level of service. Having the privilege of managing a radio dial position comes with great responsibility, and we’ve always been honored to be that community station.” Listen online at accesswdun.com

Education & Leadership
The Greater Hall Chamber announces the 15th Class of Youth Leadership Hall (YLH) and one of the largest classes yet with 80 students. Initiated in 2005, the program now has 865 student graduates. Developed for high school juniors and seniors, YLH seeks to provide an investment in the community’s future leadership by fostering interest in the community and inspiring students to become the leaders. The program begins with a kick-off in August at the Gainesville Civic Center with educators, principals, superintendents, volunteers and parents. Students will participate in monthly programs on topics on the judicial system, healthcare, servant leadership, state government, quality of life, and economic development.
