Board Opens Meetings to Chamber Members Greater Hall Chamber Chairman Jay Jacobs, Jacobs Media, is making true his commitment to connect, communicate and promote the membership. Gainesville-Hall County continues to be a destination for small businesses, professional service firms and multi-national industries. In 2010-2011, 34 new and expanded industries created 1140 jobs, retained 780 existing jobs and generated $249 million in capital investment for Gainesville-Hall County. Global firms expanding their North American business include ZF, Yazaki, GMI, ElringKlinger, Kubota, Atex, and IMS Gear. The Gainesville-Hall County Economic Development Council reports a 60% increase in jobs and double the investment over 2009. Gainesville-Hall County continues to have a strong and highly diversified business community. New and developing business/industrial parks in Hall County include Gainesville Business Park, North Gate Retail and Business Park, Gateway Industrial Centre, Glade Farm and Mountain View Business Park in Lula. Gainesville-Hall County has experienced 29% population growth from 2000-2010. In 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau identified the Gainesville-Hall County MSA as the third-fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States and the fastest growing in Georgia. The 2011 estimated population of Gainesville-Hall County is 184,894. In addition to its role as an employment center, Gainesville-Hall County is a hub for high-quality professional and medical services for a 14-county region of Northeast Georgia. Medical services are a fast growth sector for the local economy, and the Northeast Georgia Medical Center again ranked #1 in Georgia, and in the top 5% in the nation, for heart care (2006-2011) according to HealthGrades®.
• A pedestrian bridge connecting Gainesville’s Downtown to Midtown will be completed in fall 2011 and developers have plans to construct a 13-story hotel, six-level parking garage and two nine-story office buildings in midtown. • Midtown Gainesville will be redeveloped with the help of a TAD (Tax Allocation District) and an Opportunity Zone. • The cities of Flowery Branch and Oakwood are redeveloping their downtown areas with approved Tax Allocation District designations. Both cities are planning for future growth around the developing Thurmond Tanner Parkway corridor. • A June 2011 report by the University of Georgia shows North Georgia College & State University made a regional economic impact of over $230 million and accounted for 2,462 jobs in a six-county area in 2010. • Lanier Technical College's Manufacturing Development Center (MDC), a public/ private partnership housed at Featherbone Communiversity, had seven businesses graduate and is currently assisting 10 start-up manufacturing companies. • Three Hall County institutions – Brenau University, Gainesville State College and Lanier Technical College – are at record enrollment and at full capacity with a combined enrollment of more than 16,000 students.
• King’s Hawaiian is opening a 111,000-square-foot bakery and distribution center in fall 2011 at Oakwood South Industrial Park and will employ 126 people.
• Brenau University added a Doctoral Degree in the Department of Nursing, now located at the Featherbone Communiversity Campus. The Nursing Program currently has more than 350 undergraduate and graduate students. The annual impact of Brenau University on the Georgia economy totals $63.1 million and 753 jobs.
• ZF Wind Power is investing $100 million in a 250,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and division headquarters in Gainesville Business Park, creating 215 new jobs. ZF Group was named “Georgia Manufacturer of the Year 2011” by Governor Nathan Deal.
• Gainesville State College has a new, five-story, 130,000-square-foot academic building in Oakwood, and the campus has the fastest growing enrollment in the University System of Georgia. The economic impact of Gainesville State College in 2010 reached $204 million and generated 2,254 full- and part-time jobs.
• Skip Barber Racing School is moving its offices to Hall County, joining the school’s existing base location at Road Atlanta.
• 72 new physicians joined the staff at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in 2011. Over 500 physicians representing more than 50 specialties are now on staff.
• ProCare Rx is developing an $18 million operations center at I-985 Exit 20 that will ultimately create 180 jobs and add to the established base of pharmaceutical companies in Gainesville-Hall County.
• Over 150,000 square feet of new medical space has been added in Gainesville and Hall County in the last year.
More 2010-2011 Economic Development Highlights:
• A 700,000-square-foot New Holland Market Retail and Commercial complex is planned by Carolina Holdings near Exit 24 on I-985, at the intersection of Limestone and Jesse Jewell Parkways in Gainesville. • Flowery Branch has a newly developed retail corridor on Spout Springs Road with over 500,000-square-feet of retail space. • New retail developments include Michael’s, Ulta, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowe's, The Children’s Place, Aldi and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft. Beechwood Crossing Shopping Center on Highway 53 in Gainesville was announced in late 2010 and is anchored by Olive Garden and Cheddar's restaurants. • Lake Sidney Lanier remains a multi-purpose lake that provides flood protection, power production, water supply and recreation for 7.5 million visitors annually. • The $240 million Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for infrastructure projects includes public works, water and sewer, building construction, parks, courthouse and administration, fire and EMS, and City of Gainesville projects. • Thurmond Tanner Parkway Phase III will provide a parallel access road to connect exits 12, 16 and 17 on I-985. • Sewer planned for Highway 365 is under development with funding from SPLOST.
• Lake Lanier Islands completed Lanier World and Phase II of its investment in the world-class resort featuring Legacy Lodge Hotel and Conference Center, golf course improvements, harbor development, and a health spa on the shores of Lake Lanier. • The Lake Lanier Olympic Center, home to the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games, continues to host many international rowing and canoe/kayak events, including the USA Canoe Kayak National Championships in August 2011. • Road Atlanta, a 2.54-mile International Grand Prix course, attracts over 320,000 visitors annually. Road Atlanta will host the 14th Petit Le Mans in fall 2011. • Smithgall Woodland Garden, a 185-acre preserve in the Gainesville and a part of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, is in the midst of a $10 million program to develop the garden with a visitor’s center, children’s garden, amphitheater and pavilions. Gainesville-Hall County Newgeography.com ranks Gainesville, Georgia in the “Best 100 Cities in the U.S. for Job Growth” in the June 2011 report. Forbes Magazine has rated Gainesville one of the “Best Small Places for Business & Careers” for three consecutive years. The Milken Institute ranked the Gainesville-Hall County MSA in the “Best Small Metro Areas” based on job and salary growth for the past three consecutive years. Inside Business Reports, hosted by Fred Thompson, featured Gainesville-Hall County as one of the top growing communities in America in a televised business report in 2010.

Computer hardware from Gainesvillebased Trenton Systems finds its way deep under the ocean in submarines, airborne, in ground vehicles, on video display walls in factory control rooms and in military command and control centers. Trenton Systems, headquartered in Gainesville since 1993, employs 25 people dedicated to engineering and integrating robust industrial computing system solutions. Trenton single board computers, backplanes, embedded motherboards and computer systems have branched out into rugged military computers like the rackmount systems installed in the latest version of the RC-135W Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft. Ever diversifying, Trenton's video display wall controllers represent the company’s newest product offerings. "Our customers have come to rely on Trenton’s long heritage of providing customer-driven products, services and systems that deliver performance, precision and stability over extended system deployment cycles," said Michael Bowling, President of Trenton Systems.
A 2011 CBS Money Watch story named Gainesville-Hall County as one of the nation’s biggest winners in home value appreciation. The Civic Economics Indie City Index ranked Gainesville-Hall County 10 in the nation for independent retailer activity and recirculation of dollars within the community. AARP The Magazine's July 24, 2011 issue named Gainesville as a Best Places 2011 in its "10 Affordable Cities for Retirement."

Center Point Mentoring Program Chamber Beautification Initatives

Traditions Fine Furnishings on John Morrow Parkway in Gainesville is taking part in the Chamber's partnership with Center Point's Mentor program serving students in the Hall County and Gainesville City Schools. Traditions is generously providing company staff an hour off a week to serve as Center Point Mentors for the 2011-2012 school year. The Greater Hall Chamber is encouraging companies to follow Tradition's lead and provide mentors for the program.

Moss says, “Hall County has some of the most enchanting residential and commercial properties around. Participating on the Beautification Committee or attending our events is a perfect way to explore ideas from some of the top designs to others in our community who strive to enhance their property.”
Monthly gathers are held at different venues to learn about Gainesville-Hall County's best beautification efforts. Upcoming Gatherings: September 21: Smithgall Woodland Gardens; October 12: Elachee Nature Science Center; November 9: Georgia Forestry Commission Office in Lula. Center Point has been serving the students and families of Hall County since 1967 and seeks to improve low graduation rates through the mentor program. Founded in 1994 with United Way, over 5,000 area students have participated in the program. Mentoring showed great strides last year, and 90% of those students being mentored showed improvement in academics, 85% increased school attendance, 91% exhibited enhanced bonding to their school, 86% demonstrated better behavior and 91% improved peer relationships.
Community Development
Under the direction of Phillippa Moss, Greater Hall Chamber Vice Chairman of Community Development and Director of the GainesvilleHall County Community Service Center, the Beautification Committee seeks to recognize and promote outstanding efforts in the community through programs such as Business and Residential Beautification Awards. The Beautification Committee is seeking interested volunteers for one meeting or for the committee's year-long activities!
"Center Point's Mentor program really works and has a huge impact on our community," said Chamber Vice President of Education Dana Miller. "This is why the Chamber is putting the call out to all members; please consider participating in this important program."

QuEST Council Quality • Education • Strategy • Team MISSION: The Greater Hall Chamber's QuEST Council seeks to improve the employability of individuals in the community by providing leadership and support for the development of community-wide school to career initiatives. GOALS: Provide a forum to strengthen and expand the link between business and education; Recruit business and industry participants for the Youth Apprenticeship Program, Partners in Education, mentoring and job shadowing programs.
