Jackson EMC 75th Anniversary Jackson EMC celebrates its 75th anniversary this year as a tribute to those who formed the cooperative. In 1938, a handful of community leaders and a determined county extension agent took advantage of the Rural Electrification Act to get their fellow farmers, rural homeowners and businesses to sign up for electricity. In 1938, rural Georgians had no electricity, running water or indoor toilets. Residents put Before electricity, wood burning stoves were used not only for cooking, but for heating bath water and heavy irons for clothing. down $5 each to be members of a newly formed electric cooperative. “Today it seems like a small amount, but at the end of the Great Depression, when most families were just scraping by, about two-thirds of land being farmed in Georgia was worked by sharecroppers who lived on less than $200 a year,” notes Jackson EMC president & CEO Randall Pugh. Over 700 signed on with 171 miles of line serving 664 farms in Jackson, Banks and Madison counties in April 1939. The United States, for the first time in its history, is seeing on an annual basis more accidental deaths associated with prescription narcotic pain killer overdoses than motor vehicle deaths. The latest data informs us that the number of accidental overdose deaths related to misuse of prescription narcotics (i.e. opioids) has continued to rise P. Tennent Slack, MD Dallas Gay for the 11th consecutive year. Co-chair, MAG Foundation Co-chair, MAG Foundation The number of accidental deaths Think About It Campaign Think About It Campaign directly correlates with the volume of narcotic prescriptions issued by physicians which also has also continued to rise annually. Pain complaints account for up to 80% of doctor visits. Pain is a subjective and complex phenomenon which is influenced by multiple variables including both the immediate and long-term emotional status of the patient, the presence of co-existing depression and anxiety disorders, and the socioeconomic status of the patient. Opioids are the most effective drugs currently available for treating moderate-to-severe pain. Unfortunately, opioids also have significant potential for addiction and deadly side effects. The coupling of pain and opioids thus makes for a particularly difficult scenario. The goal of the “Think About It” program is to educate both professionals and the public regarding the proper use of opioids in the treatment of both short-term and long-term pain. The campaign further wishes to engage any and all parties who are touched by this distressing problem. The Think About It Campaign, a program of the Medical Association of

Home Depot, Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville, has partnered with Mount Vernon Elementary School as part of the Greater Hall Chamber's Partners In Education program. The partnership began when Joe Mayfield, a Mount Vernon volunteer, was buying samples for the teachers to review and select for display boards. Mayfield states, "Reece Gilmer approached me, and I told him what I was doing. He immediately said we can help you with your projects!" Mount Vernon Principal Connie Daniels announced the new business partner stating, "Mt. Vernon Elementary is so appreciative of the generosity and support from Home Depot toward our charter school goals. Our students are excited about the opportunities to display their learning through various projects, such as Art Display Boards built by Home Depot. The boards are mounted in our hallways and improve the visual aesthetics of our school and provide an engaging environment for all to see.” Home Depot is also providing Project Cubbies for each pod of classrooms with wall shelving for 3-D projects along with an Outdoor Science Lab. "We’ve always been a company that celebrates core values and a culture of ‘giving back’ – that is important to us as individuals and as a company.” said Gilmer. "What better way to accomplish our mission of giving back than through schools? This, in turn, is beneficial to families and our community. Through our projects with Mount Vernon, we can make a positive impact on teaching and learning and play a small role in the success of the students.” Currently, some 350 businesses have joined forces with Gainesville-Hall County schools as part of Parters in Education. For more information on the program or to learn how your company can participate, contact Dana Miller, Chamber VP Education, 770-532-6206 x 113. Email: dmiller@ghcc.com
