Saving the Brick and Mortars Just the other day, I was forwarded an email by my sister from a local independent retailer. The message was strong and lured me into researching further. Carole Hudgins, owner of The Little Ladybug and originator of the email, sent a cry for support. She urges current customers and prospective clients to take part in the 3/50 Project. The goal is simple: Ask consumers to frequent three local businesses they don’t want to see disappear, and to spend a very affordable $50 per month doing it.

The 3/50 Project is a viral Buy Local campaign that sprung from a simple blog post in March 2009, supporting independent, locally owned businesses. By educating consumers about the impact of their spending habits, the Project's goal is to increase consumer spending in a way that delivers the greatest amount of financial benefit to local community economies. The Project's tag line, Saving the Brick and Mortars Our Nation is Built On, refers to its sole purpose – retention of locally owned, independent businesses, whose dollars provide a large portion of annual revenue critical to funding public resources and services.
Consumers are asked to think of three businesses they would miss if they disappeared, then return to them, with a reminder that those transactions are what keeps the doors open. The number 50 ties to the fact that if just half the employed U.S. population dedicated $50 of their current monthly spending to locally owned independent businesses, more than $42.6 billion of revenue would be generated annually. The 3/50 Project message then explains that for every $100 spent in local, independent brick and mortar businesses, more than $68 returns to the local economy; when spent in a big box or chain, the amount drops to only $43. Spend it online, and unless you live in exactly the same community as the e-tailer, nothing comes home.

I can think of three businesses right off the bat. And, supporting this Buy Local campaign is at the heart of the Chamber's mission. Over 85% of our members are small businesses. On January 19th, we'll support this campaign further by hosting the Buy Local Business Expo. Already, 30 companies have signed up as exhibitors, and we'll be promoting all the programs and services you can find right here at home.

Jay Jacobs followed in his father's footsteps and his grandfather's footsteps becoming the first third-generation leader of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce this year. Jay's grandfather, John Jacobs, Sr., served as president of the Chamber in 1928. His father, John Jacobs, Jr., founder of WDUN Radio, Jacobs Media and Wide Travel served two terms as Chamber President/Chairman, first in 1956 and again in 1970. Chamber associates and friends are remembering the media giant and community leader who died in November. Jacobs dedicated his life to serving his family, his country and the needs of the community. He was a WWII Veteran, Brenau University's longest serving Trustee (chair for 25 years), a 31-year trustee at Riverside Military Academy, Kiwanis Club leader, Jaycees president and help found the Northeast Georgia History Center. ProCare Rx, a national pharmacy benefit management company, broke ground in late October on construction of the first of several buildings in the new ProCare Park corporate campus in Gainesville-Hall County. The initial facility, located on a 23acre site fronting I-985 at Exit 20, is anticipated to be complete by summer 2012 and will house ProCare Rx’s almost 120 Georgia-based employees in the corporate headquarters, operations support and state-of-the-art data center. “This is a long-term strategic move for us to relocate our corporate headquarters and the bulk of our operations to Gainesville-Hall County,” said Roger Burgess, cofounder of ProCare Rx. “As a national company, we need to be close to the assets of Metro-Atlanta, however it is important that we be in a community with its own sense of identity and a progressive attitude that supports our business growth.”

On hand for the ground breaking ceremony was Lt. During a group meeting, ProCare Rx officials shared their vision, and the City of Gainesville, Hall County, the Gainesville and Hall County Development Authority worked together to support the creation of the new corporate campus. “This is a business that recognizes the importance of people,” said Kit Dunlap, President and CEO of the Greater Hall Chamber. “ProCare Rx joins a growing list of national leaders in technology-based businesses that recruit and retain the best talent in Gainesville-Hall County. ProCare Rx will be a company that helps brand this community with a prominent position on one of the most visible sites in the region.”

Pattillo to construct new building Pattillo Industrial Real Estate will begin construction on a new, 77,100 square-foot speculative building in Gainesville Business Park this month – the first spec building developed in Georgia in almost four years. Larry Callahan, CEO, Pattillo Industrial Real Estate said, “Our firm will Rendering of Pattillo's new spec building. be making this investment in one of the hottest economic development markets in the Southeast. The Gainesville-Hall County market has demonstrated that demand by employers to access the skilled workforce drives demand for manufacturing space.” The building, located on a 20-acre site at the park, will be expandable to 140,000 square feet. This will be the second building developed in the Gainesville Business Park since opening in March 2010. ZF Wind Power opened a 250,000-square-foot headquarters and manufacturing space in October 2011. “Our public-private partnership with Pattillo continues to pay dividends for the area,” added Tim Evans, Vice President of Economic Development. “As much as 80% of our new business recruitment activity is focused on finding an existing building. Our success has left available buildings very scarce in our market. This new building will enhance our ability to attract needed jobs to the region.”

New VISION 2030 Board members have hit the ground running with more than a dozen committees formed, involving over 100 community volunteers. Work is underway to make our “15 Big Ideas” become a reality by the year 2030. Some recent news: • VISION 2030 is excited to work with the John Jarrard Foundation by helping host the first three-day music festival at Brenau University in September. The concert event celebrated its 10 year anniversary this year and grossed over $110,000 for area charities. • The Green Space Committee is working to make our Kelly Anne Miles Chairman VISION 2030 community more connected by trail ways and paths along our current parks. We are pleased with the announcement Partner, Smith, Gilliam, Williams & Miles that the City of Gainesville is continuing the construction on the Midtown Greenway and is developing the trail head in the former CSX maintenance yard. The project is taking place in conjunction with the stream restoration of the North Fork Tributary to Flat Creek. Phase I of the Midtown trail should be open for public use by Spring 2012. • VISION's Public Art Committee is identifying sites for future art and sculpture locations – new ideas and public/private partnerships always welcome! • The Harbor Town Committee has identified three possible locations where a live/ work/play community on Lake Lanier could become a reality. • We recently launched a new website – vision2030.org. Northeast Georgia General Restorative Dentistry has been a Partner in Education with Enota Multi Intelligence Academy for three years. Dr. Rick Gadbois and his staff recently taught the kids from Monica Carnes and Amy Anderson’s classes the basics of proper hygiene and the importance of keeping teeth clean and healthy. Dr. Gadbois presented an educational animated video that was fun for kids of all ages, and each student received a take home bag full of goodies including a tooth brush, dental mirror and coloring sheet. Vinci Academy student museum and “Footprints in Time” exhibit. Leadership Hall County enjoyed an overview of Lakeview Academy by John P. Kennedy, Ed. D, Head of School. At Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy, Dr. Matt Maynor, Principal, spoke about the school's accomplishments. Dr. Merrianne Dyer, Gainesville City Schools Superintendent, discussed the Gainesville City School System including future plans for Fair Street Elementary, out-of-city tuition, mandated testing and how charter schools are formed and managed. The class toured Hall County's Lanier Charter Career Academy, enjoyed a delicious fivecourse meal and heard from Superintendent Will Schofield, Hall County Schools. The class toured the World Language Academy led by David Moody, Principal and Carrie Woodcock, Dual Language Coordinator, and witnessed first-hand how the students are learning two/three languages. The group toured the Da Vinci Academy where they explored the student museum and the “Footprints in Time” exhibit where Tinker the Teenage T-Rex fossil and a dinosaur exhibit is on loan from a real estate developer and dinosaur prospector in Austin, TX. Thank you Georgia Power for lunch and Lakeview Academy for breakfast and bus transportation.
Youth Leadership Hall students recently learned about the importance of good credit from Semuel Maysonet, BB&T, and how credit scores are determined. At Jaemor Farms co-owner Drew Echols spoke about agriculture and the history and current operation of the farm. Students enjoyed a hay ride and learned about farming pumpkins, beans, peaches, sun flowers and the process of getting these products and others to consumers. Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada addressed the class, and a department tour was led by Deputy Chief Jerome Yarbourgh. The class lunched on the Gainesville Square during a Blue Sky Concert and took part in a scavenger hunt led by Julie Butler, Gainesville Parks and Recreation, and Angela Thompson, Main Street Gainesville.
