VOLUME 27 ISSUE 3
Small business is crucial to our local economy
Phil Sutton Kubota Manufacturing of America, Chairman, Greater Hall Chamber
Small business is the backbone of our community. As the foundation for our economic wellbeing, local businesses employ locally and provide critical goods, services and tax dollars that directly contribute to the health of our community. In addition, our small businesses contribute to our economy by bringing growth, innovation and character.
Small businesses are the lifeblood that keeps the American economy functioning. According to a report issued by the Small Business Administration (SBA) in 2019, small businesses account for 44% of economic activity in the United States. Small businesses create two-thirds of new jobs and deliver 43.5% of the United States' gross domestic product (GDP). 6 Ways Small Businesses Benefit the Community • Create job opportunities • Get more money circulating in the local economy • Keep taxes close to home • Build community identity • Encourage entrepreneurial spirit • Promote community involvement I can’t emphasize enough how crucial our small businesses are to economic health of our community – and now
more than ever before. When citizens buy from a small business, their money goes to pay for a local employee, who goes on to spend money locally. Studies show that if you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays within your local economy. It’s a chain reaction that serves the entire community. When progressive communities – like Downtown Flowery Branch and the Historic Gainesville Square – are filled with unique coffee shops, lofts and apartments, locally owned restaurants, art galleries, microbreweries, concert venues, design shops and quirky boutiques – together with a large number of strong, non-retail players like architects, real estate agencies, nonprofits and attorneys – that downtown is often the heart and soul of a vibrant community. A strong small business presence is what gives a community its character. It creates that sense of “place” that attracts tourists, young people and empty nesters, a talented workforce, and more businesses and investors who drive further growth. This is what we are currently seeing throughout Hall County, specifically in the historic communities of Downtown Flowery Branch and Downtown Gainesville. Progress and growth can bring growing pains. The Chamber staff recently visited with a dozen or so small businesses around the Gainesville Square who are being affected by construction and a loss of foot traffic. See what these folks had to say on page 12. Our small businesses are BIG contributors in so many ways. Let's continue to support them, and buy local.

Employers looking to hire at Job Fair
Northeast Georgia Inland Port The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is moving forward with construction on the Northeast Georgia Inland Port in the first half of 2022, and GPA expects the facility will be operational by 2024. The inland port will add a new 324-mile direct rail service to connect the port of Savannah to the 110-acre Inland Port Terminal site at the Gateway Industrial Centre on Hwy 365 north of Gainesville. The facility will feature six railroad tracks with a combined length of about 18,000 feet connecting to the Norfolk Southern Crescent Corridor. Existing industries in the area will have a direct freight rail link to the Port of Savannah with one train capable of replacing 200 trucks for the long haul between Gainesville and Savannah. “For our existing industries, the Inland Port Terminal will be a welcome addition to our logistics infrastructure," said Tim Evans, Chamber Vice President of Economic Development. "There are tremendous economies of scale that can be achieved by using rail for long-haul freight, and there will be opportunities for local trucking firms providing the “last-mile” logistics support to and from the Inland Port Terminal.”
Over 700 job seekers are expected to attend the Job Fair on September 9 (10am-2pm) at the Gainesville Civic Center. Employers are looking to hire! Call 770-532-6206 for details. The event is presented by Express Employment Professionals. Face masks required. September 2021 | GreaterHallChamber.com

economic development Syfan Logistics Celebrates ‘10-Year Rebirth’
Industry of the Year Awards Wednesday, November 17 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Lanier Technical College | Ramsey Conference Center
This year marks Syfan Logistics’ 10th year back in business – a very special milestone that the Gainesville-based company is calling its 10-Year Rebirth. Prior to starting Syfan Logistics in 2011, the Syfan family – Jim and Gloria Syfan and their sons Greg and Steve – had an even longer run with their former business, Turbo Logistics. They started Turbo in May 1984, then sold it in 2006. A few years later, the Syfans missed their team and customers so much that they returned to the logistics and trucking industry with the “rebirth” of a new company, Syfan Logistics. “Back in 1994, our first 10-year company anniversary was very special,” said Syfan Logistics President Greg Syfan. “Now it’s the second time around, and this 10-year milestone just feels twice as special.”
Greater Hall Chamber Industry of the Year Awards recognize economic impact, corporate responsibility and workforce excellence. The 2021 Industry Appreciation Luncheon features Senator Butch Miller as guest speaker and presentation of the 13th Annual Industry of the Year Awards. Industry of the Year Awards are presented in small, medium and large employer categories. Nominations are open to existing industries in the Greater Hall County area.

Barry’s Menswear & Tuxedo
Barry's Menswear has been a privately-owned family company for four generations. Founder Abe Zeeman immigrated from Russia in 1884 at 17 years of age, and in 1898 he started a wholesale men’s clothing business. As sales grew under his son Harold Jr.’s direction, the company found itself in need of added capacity, so in 1964 operations were moved to a new facility in Gainesville. Harold Zeeman Sr., at that time, decided to change the company name to Barry Manufacturing, hoping his grandson, Barry Zeeman, then 2 years old, would continue in the business. Barry now serves as President of the company that maintains the same old world tailoring and quality techniques handed down from father to son since 1898! 125 John W, Morrow Jr Pkwy in Gainesville. barrysmenswear.com

Downtown Gainesville – Open for Business!
member development
We took a walk around Downtown Gainesville to visit with our members. Between road work and new developments under construction, our Downtown businesses are feeling the squeeze with parking issues, loss of foot traffic and the growing pains that come with progress. Here's a sampling of what they had to say.
Martin Furniture & Design Enemies of the Average Martin Furniture & Design has been in business for 75 years! Though road construction has caused some headaches, Margaret Martin Henson and Holly Peck (left) thank their loyal customers for continued support and urge all to shop downtown! Use parking behind the store for easy access! martinsfurnitureanddesign.com
Scott's Downtown
Scott Dixon says Scott's Downtown is fully staffed and ready to serve! Use the shuttle, and come enjoy extended hours in the lounge and the same delicious food and fine dining we've come to know and love! scottsdowntown.com
Rahab's Rope
Did you know Enemies of the Average has a new retail shop? Ginny Early is owner and designer of the beautifully curated boutique that features luxury gifts, candles, plant-based skincare and unique potted plants. They source from womenowned and BIPOC-owned makers and offer custom design services as well. enemiesoftheaverage.com
Rahab's Rope exists to empower women and children in the fight against human trafficking. David Moore and Emily Lacy (left) say that while stateside sales continue to grow, they are facing international supplier issues due to COVID-19. They encourage shopping on their extensive on-line catalog: rahabsrope.com
Gypsy Threads Boutique Avocado's & Hopscotch Taylor Wilson met the ultimate challenge when she moved to the Downtown Square in 2020 – just in time for businesses to close for 7 weeks! Now with road closures, they taken a hit on foot traffic and accessibility. She's excited about the future of the Downtown and encourages support of Gypsy Threads by shopping in the store, online or through their social media. mygypsythreads.com

Garment + Grace
Pairlon Dunagan says "Grace" is a word that we are all familiar with and use in many different ways. One use of the word is as a verb, "do honor or credit to someone by one's presence," which is how Garment + Graces strives to treat customers. Let's all show this boutique some ‘grace’ and shop local! garmentandgrace.com
Recess Southern Gastro Pub
(L-R) Nicole Ricketts, Main Street Gainesville; Matthew Johnson and Owner Chris Richardson, Recess Southern Gastro Pub; Nikki Chandler, Chamber, discuss the restaurant and Downtown Gainesville projects and construction. recesspub.com
Bryan Gonzalez and Bud Whelchel, Avocado's and Hopscotch, noted that the construction downtown is taking a toll on a lot of businesses at the moment, however the excitement of what it will bring is a driving force for our bright future. avocadoseats.com
Dress Up Gainesville
Faith Carlisle says Dress Up's goal is to show the love of Christ and to help women realize their worth. The shop's main challenge has been a decrease in traffic due to construction, yet says the Gainesville community has been nothing but supportive. She encourages folks to stop by and see the progress of the Square + keep shopping small! shopdressup.com
