John Quincy Adams We have been fortunate to have a long legacy of leadership at the Greater Hall Chamber, and I thank immediate past chairman Randall Frost for his part in keeping the tradition.

A common trait among successful leaders is the ability to inspire others. During my term as chair, I hope to inspire others, as Randall has, and increase Chamber member involvement. Gainesville-Hall County has a diverse base of leadership with folks from all walks of life, and I believe that is exactly what makes our community great. We enjoy outstanding leaders in business, community and philanthropy. We enjoy leadership from all ages, from student/youth leaders to young upcoming professionals to the seasoned leaders that helped form many of our current programs.

The Chamber has hundreds of volunteers that exhibit leadership qualities while working for the betterment of our community. Dozens of committees, the VISION 2030 initiative, Healthcare Consortium, Economic Development Council, Partners in Education, Leadership Hall County, Youth Leadership Hall and The Wisdom Project are just a few programs developing leaders for life.

Leadership Hall County is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year (see article on page 15) and is an effective development program that provides the opportunity for existing and emerging leaders to gain insight and knowledge concerning all aspects of the Gainesville-Hall County community.

Additionally, the program educates local leaders about the challenges facing our community today.

We must keep in mind what legacy we are seeking to maintain and to build. A good leader must lead not just for today but also for the future. I hope to help in creating a community of leaders that we can pass the baton. I will complete my term as chair this time next year, and the Chamber will move forward with a new set of leaders. That is why it is so critical that we focus not on this year alone but on serving the organization and preparing the next generation to assume their role.

ZF celebrated the grand opening of its third facility in the Gainesville-Hall County region in June. The newest plant is located on Rafe Banks Drive in Oakwood Industrial Park and is a manufacturing site for clutches and other powertrain components for mid-size and heavy trucks. The new plant demonstrates ZF’s commitment to “Made in America” products. Since 1986, when ZF opened its first North American production facility in Gainesville to build manual transmissions for Ford pickup trucks, ZF’s presence in the area has grown. The opening of the third facility attests to the many positive facets of the GainesvilleHall County area and its people, as well as local employee training facilities, and support from local, state government and regional authorities. With the addition of the new facility, ZF also brings more jobs to the Gainesville-Hall County area with over 550 employees at three locations. The new plant brings the number of the North American production sites to 22, and the North American market generates 18% of ZF’s sales. Those sales increased by 48% in 2012. With over 6,800 employees and growing, the North American market plans for significant growth and with central production areas, like Gainesville/Oakwood/Hall County, will remain an important region for ZF. German-based BITZER was founded in 1934, and has two U.S. locations – Oakwood GA and Syracuse NY. In 1979, Peter Schaufler took over BITZER Inc. from his father and has grown the operation to over 36 locations worldwide.

BITZER’s worldwide sales are now almost $1 billion, and BITZER is now the largest screw and semi-hermetic piston compressor manufacturer in the world.

BITZER US has been a large part of the company’s growth and strategy. In 1999 Peter Schaufler began BITZER US in Oakwood as its first North American independent subsidiary to sell compressors. By 2005, BITZER US began local production of reciprocating compressors with 25 employees. Over the next eight years, Schaufler continued to invest in the Oakwood facility turning it into the North American Headquarters. In 2012, Schaufler invested approximately $10 million in a new plant and equipment to support the increase in production required to meet the demand.

The new $10 million facility was developed by Pattillo Construction Company.

Kubota Manufacturing of America Corporation (KMA) located in Gainesville Industrial Park North in 1988 to establish Kubota's North American manufacturing headquarters and has grown from about 38 workers to over 1,000. Henry Kubota is president of KMA and Kubota Industrial Equipment, a Jefferson manufacturing facility that opened eight years ago and expanded this year. KMA in Gainesville is led by Phil Sutton, Chief Administrative Officer, and manufactures and assembles lawn tractors, mowers, subcompact tractors, utility vehicles, loaders and backhoes.

In recent years, the facility has expanded with an additional 490,000 square feet of cross-dock, and products manufactured in Gainesville are exported throughout the world. About 50% of all Kubota branded equipment sold in the United States is manufactured or assembled at the local 151-acre facility. KMA production supports a network of component and logistics suppliers in the area, including Tatsumi Intermodal, Etori, Shintone and others, and many local businesses in Gainesville-Hall County count Kubota as a long-time business partner. Prescription drug abuse is advancing at an alarming rate, and more people in Georgia die from prescription drug overdoses from abusive reasons than in automobile accidents.

Designed for 55+ members of the community, Wisdom Project is a partnership of the Greater Hall Chamber and Brenau University’s Center for Lifetime Study. The Wisdom Project prepares retired and semi-retired individuals to use their wisdom and talents in creative ways through action and advocacy. Participants experience a dynamic, multi-faceted view of Gainesville-Hall County, explore local issues and opportunities and engage with community leaders.

Steak 'n Shake opens in Oakwood Matthew Meeks and Mike Stephens, franchisees of the new Oakwood Steak 'n Shake, cut ribbon at the grand opening on June 20. The Greater Hall Chamber's Leadership Hall County (LHC) program is celebrating its 30th year anniversary. Founded by the Chamber in 1983, the program exposes highly talented, motivated and potential leaders of Hall County to the inter-related economic, government, socio-cultural and educational issues of the community. To celebrate the program’s 30 years of success, a new Leadership Hall logo/brand has been launched. “Integrity. Passion. Vision. These words describe the Leadership Hall County program perfectly. We are excited about our new look and look forward to 30 more years of leadership excellence in Gainesville-Hall County,” said Dana Miller, Chamber Vice President of Education.

Over 730 people have graduated from the program. Class members are nominated by former participants and selected by the Leadership Hall Selection Committee. Leadership Hall County graduates continue to be involved in many areas of volunteer and civic service in our community. Each year local non-profit agencies present service project ideas to the class, and the class decides the project they will undertake.
