FOUR POINTS PREPARATORY ACADEMY is
coming to Braselton
In the early months of 2022, newly elected Braselton Mayor Kurt Ward formed an exploratory group of local residents with the purpose of learning about charter schools.
A charter school is by definition “Charter schools are tuition-free, public and open to all students.” As autonomous public schools, charters agree to greater accountability in exchange for increased flexibility. Public charter schools offer greater personal attention and give students from all backgrounds the opportunity to attend a school that works best for them. A nonprofit volunteer board of directors oversees all Georgia charter schools. The “charter” establishing each school is a contract detailing the school’s mission, program, goals, students served, methods of assessment and ways to measure success. Charter schools can be closed if they do not fulfill the high standards established in their contracts with a charter school authorizer.
The group went through an extensive, month long due diligence process to determine the feasibility of opening a charter school in the recently purchased West Jackson Primary School building. Surveys, small group parent meetings, meetings with local businesses and leaders were all part of this process. The building is located on Hwy. 53 Braselton and includes the school building and about 15 acres of land. The gym and adjacent ball fields are not part of the property, but could be available to the school during the day.
The group visited charter schools in Georgia and North Carolina. They learned about Georgia Charter School Law, the way the school governance would have to be structured and the options for day-today operation of the school. At the end of data gathering, it was determined that a school was feasible and highly desired by local parents. As Braselton has four counties that intersect it, the attendance zone will be for any families in Banks, Barrow, Jackson, Gwinnett and Hall counties. Students currently enrolled in Gainesville, Jefferson, Buford and Commerce city schools are also eligible.
A nonprofit board, made up of a diverse group of Georgia residents is required to hold the charter. New Schools Georgia, LLC was formed for the purpose of submitting the application. The appli-
cation was submitted in March. In late August of this year, the State Charter School Commission (SCSC) approved the schools charter application with a 5-2 vote. The charter is good for five years, with subsequent five year renewals based on a number of factors, including the SCSC’s Comprehensive Performance Framework that holds the school accountable on finances, student achievement, teacher and parent satisfaction, facilities, etc. Students take all traditional public school milestones, EOC’s and standardized testing.
The charter contract makes New Schools Georgia a Local Education Authority (LEA) or school board. The school will open in August 2024 with grades K-5, then add a grade level per year through 8th grade. Enrollment is based on an application to the school during a yearly open enrollment period. Once a grade level reaches capacity, a random lottery is used to form a wait list. Siblings of currently enrolled students, teachers, full-time staff and relatives of board members have priority attendance. The date for open enrollment for the 2024-2025 school will be announced shortly.
After a nationwide search and interview process and under the direction of the governing board, National Heritage Academies has been selected as the schools operator. They will be responsible for all curriculum, hiring and day to day operations of the school. NHA currently operates 100+ schools in 9 states educating more than 66,000 students. Research from Stanford University’s Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) shows that on average students increase their academic performance each year they attend an NHA-partner school. Specifically, NHA students receive the equivalent of an extra 80 days of learning in math each year and receive an extra 63 days in reading over the same time frame (CREDO, 2017). In the recent 2023 CREDO study NHA was noted as one of the top performing operators in the US. NHA offers a rigourous, moral focused education. Every month a virtue is focused and woven into each class lesson. All areas of educational need is addressed from gifted learner to those that need special attention.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONY
“We recently sold our home in Chateau Elan and had worked with Karen for over a year in preparing for the right time to sell and getting our home market ready. Karen had a third party inspection done of our home so we would know of anything that needed to be addressed. This proved to be very helpful as we found out that our roof had hail damage and Karen put us in touch with a company that was able to get it replaced through an insurance claim. Having an inspection done on the front end also made it much easier to negotiate with our buyers on a contract. Karen personally handled all the calls for our house and verified buyers were qualified, she was available during the showings to answer questions and was able to showcase the amenities of the neighborhood. We also used Karen for the purchase of our new home and hghly recommend her services.”
