Welcome Committee News By Denise Skeels Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of nine members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held a Newcomer Orientation in the Ballroom on November 15, 2018 for those new residents closing on houses from August-October of 2018. Approximately 48 residents attended the presentation by MTScapes, First Service, and our HOA. Refreshments were served and six door prizes were given away. The new residents were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall County. The next New Resident Orientation will be held in February. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at skeelsdenise@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents!! Welcome to Cresswind!

Architectural Review Committee (ARC)…
By Landy Johnson
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) wishes a Happy New Year to all Cresswind Residents. This winter season is the perfect time to plan your exterior projects for spring and summer. Remember that no approval is needed for things you change or remodel inside your house, but changes to the outside do require a quick and easy application to the ARC. Get your application from the front desk or on the residents’ web site. For example, if you are finishing a loft, no approval is needed for the interior work, but you need to apply to have the additional HVAC unit positioned outside. On the application, you do not need to provide any information about what you are doing inside – just the location of the HVAC unit (on a sketch) and your formal plot plan. For those of you whose homes have weathered several years, exterior painting may be in order. You do not have to paint your house its original color – you can use any one of the many Cresswind paint schemes developed by Kolter. Paint chips for all these schemes may be viewed at the front desk. For the older Levitt houses, you can match your original paint colors (you will have to provide paint chips) or go with one of the Kolter color schemes. An ARC member visits the home of every applicant, resulting in a conversation that homeowners generally find to be very helpful. Our goal is always to facilitate the smooth and quick turnaround of your application. As we begin a new year, I want to thank Vickie Johnson and Dan Gershkowitz for their time on the ARC as their terms end. Dan was an excellent Chair who has been extremely helpful to me as I take on this new role. My goal for 2019 is for the ARC to operate as smoothly as it did under his leadership.

Adventures in Dining By: Karen Silverthorn Previously called Dinner Group, members enjoyed a savory traditional menu in November with a stuffed beef tenderloin with burgundy-mushroom sauce; balsamic green beans and pearl onions, and stacked herb potatoes. All recipes are provided, courses assigned between those attending, and one person is assigned for each course to help and answer questions of others making the same dishes at the other participating houses. Anyone can join at any time during the year; so, take advantage of the two remaining dinners. Thai dishes are planned for February 2, 2019, and for the last dinner on March 2, 2019, Irish food will be celebrated. Stay tuned for a possible spring wrap-up party open to all Adventures in Dining members. Our mission is simple - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. There are always a total of 4 couples/pairs of people at each host home. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses each using the same recipes and making the same dishes. Food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/ couple) are shared equally among participants at each house.
Page 14 | The Waterfall | January/February
Annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. If you are interested in joining, email directly the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@ charter.net) to be added to the email list. Every meal is an adventure!

Canine Club By Jami Dittmeier Greetings fellow dog/pet lovers. As we reflect on the past year, we recall the great programs we presented: Dr. Mary from Oakwood Animal Hospital who offered us tips on how to keep our furry friends in tip top shape; Kevin Lowery from The Department of Natural Resources who brought us information on how to keep our furry family members and ourselves safe while enjoying the wildlife in our community; finally, our thanks go out to Julie Edwards, Executive Director and Olivia Paul, Volunteer & Education Coordinator both of The Humane Society of North East Georgia. These ladies made us aware of all the opportunities and offerings of the Humane Society. Please watch for details of 2019 meetings in the Daily Updates or Facebook. All residents are welcome to join us the second Thursday of the months January through November. Remember we are always grateful for your program suggestions. If you have any questions be sure to contact me Jami Dittmeier @sjdittmeier@gmail.com.

Bowling League Ends One-Half of Season By Phil Vinyard The Cresswind Bowling League concluded the first half of the 2018 -19 league season. Also, on December 13th, we had our Christmas and Holiday buffet at the Stars and Strikes Bowling Alley in Buford and spouses attended and shared in the bounty of food that everyone brought. Yum! The team that won the first half of the season will ultimately compete against the team that wins the second half of the season to determine our overall first place team and so on down the line to the last place team. Prize money will then be awarded according to team placement. Once again, we will have approximately six thousand dollars in prize money to distribute to individual award winners and teams. Every week each team has the opportunity to win 7 points, 2 points for winning each of 3 games bowled and 1 point for total pins including handicap. With many new bowlers and teams competing for the first time this year, the competition is heating up and more and more Cresswinders are being seen practicing at the alley on other days. Stars and Strikes really promotes this by giving each league bowler up to 9 free games each week for practice. You cannot beat practice especially when it is free!
Fishing Club News By Gus Brown (welcome to The Waterfall, Gus) For loyal readers of this column, you will notice the new reporter. I am sad to report the passing of our former reporter Toby Kelley- he will be remembered as a fearless, fun loving, enthusiastic fisherman. His are small shoes to fill- but I will try. Now the fishing news- in a word, Winter fishing is great. Tom Brown has been posting some great pictures of big Striped bass. In our cove, the guys are reporting big catches of crappie, spotted bass, perch and even a few cat fish. We are making plans for a January road trip to the Atlanta boat show fishing lectures and our own Cresswind fishing school. Come join the fun. Page 18 | The Waterfall | January/February
Bridge Club News By John Kelley We are happy to reports lots of new faces at the Cresswind Bridge Club card tables. Liar’s Club Game Show
Get ready for the most hilarious time ever as the Cresswind Performing Arts Club presents the Liar’s Club Game Show on Thursday evening, February 21st. Some of our very own residents will perform as “liars” in a game show that will be so much fun. You will not believe how creative some people can get when they are asked to give the definitions of some not-sofamiliar words. There will be a panel of “experts” and each will give a definition. One will be telling the truth and the others will be lying. You will have to figure out the truth teller for each word. Prizes will be given. Tickets will go on sale in late January. Put this on your calendar.
We would love for you to come join us.

Fun with Fashions By Harriet Gershkowitz
We had our Annual Meeting in November and had a wonderful turnout to learn about programs we are playing for next year. Voting was held for the 2019 officers followed by a delightful program on how to prepare easy and delicious appetizers for Holiday Entertaining. Lisa Giblin and Kathy Zeranski demonstrated these tasty treats as well as quick and inexpensive table displays. To our delight, Mike Giblin and Henry Zeranski served up luscious drinks for us to try as an addition to the appetizers. Just a reminder, we are collecting $5.00 dues for 2019. If you are a new member and paid at the meeting then you are paid up through 2019. If you need to pay dues, please put a check for $5.00 made out to Fun with Fashions in the mailbox in the lobby of the clubhouse. Check the Daily Update for our next exciting program or outing.

Model Railroad Club By Brian Chapin The Model Railroad Club has had a busy autumn. Brian Chapin did a clinic on designing a layout at the September meeting and then had 110 visitors attend an open house for his N Scale Maine Central model railroad on November 3rd. On November 29th, the Club visited the home layout of Dr. Joe Nichols Sr. in Atlanta, where we operated trains and learned a great deal about how he built this gorgeous, 24 x 48 foot, HO scale layout over the past 50 years. Almost everything was built from scratch. On December 1st, we set up our own 16 x 24 foot modular layout in the Fitness Lounge, in conjunction with the Breakfast with Santa. It was great to see all the kids bring their Grandparents along to see it. Plans for 2019 include more how-to clinics, more modular layout operating sessions, and a possible weekend excursion to Chattanooga TN in September to visit ‘RailFest’. Membership is free, so if you are interested in trains or model trains, come join us. Just email wke2003@bellsouth.net or brianchapin@charter.net

Genealogy Club
By Dave Dittmeier
Plans are underway for a new and exciting 2019. Topics for our January meeting include a recap of our 2018 meetings, Kegel Club Research, Taking Screen Shots of Documents and Photos, and Interpreting Responses concerning Target Ancestor Research. February will feature a presentation by a Club member on preserving old photos and then a general discussion with resources on identifying old photos. Both months will also include the ever popular “Did You Know” where new resources/findings are presented to the Club. The Club is open to all residents regardless of their level of research and expertise. We volunteer to help each other.
You might be a genealogist if.... you are thrilled to discover a “black sheep’ in the family.

The club had planned an exciting trip to Sarasota, FL to see the annual Sand Castle competition and the Chalk Festival. Unfortunately, we had to cancel due to the Red Tide that plagued the gulf coast. The good news is that the organizers have decided to repeat the Chalk festival in November 2019, so we are getting ready to book that trip. Other ideas for 2019 include trips to Brunswick, GA, Branson, MO, and Chattanooga, TN (RailFest). Our next planning meeting will likely be in January. An email notice will go out to members. Can You Keep Up with This Group? By Elaine Vetter Social Singles has been very busy the past couple months. Along with the monthly bowling, hikes, and lunch bunch, we have had several very fun and interesting outings. In October, we went on a fall foliage train ride from Blue Ridge through the mountains, and a week later took a tour of Hall County’s newest park at Healen Head Mill. We helped Gainesville kick off their holiday festivities at Jingle Mingle in November, and December found us venturing to Tate, Georgia for a tour, lunch, and decorating demonstration at the “Pink Mansion”. And lastly, a trip in mid-December to Dahlonega to check out their Christmas decorations, have lunch, and do a little shopping. Our second annual Chili fundraiser was held in October and was a huge success with the group donating over $1500 to the Gainesville Exploration Academy for playground equipment. The November social was on the 11th so the theme for the potluck that evening was USA/Veteran’s Day and we honored those in attendance who had served in our military. December fun started on the 2nd with our Holiday Party including a sit-down dinner, gift swap, and music by Fielding Dillard. And we finished off 2018 at our own New Year’s Eve celebration on the 3rd floor of the clubhouse that included appetizers/snacks, games, and watching the Peach Drop. In January, we will have our kick-off social on Saturday, January 12th and our first outing is planned to Athens to watch the UGA gymnastics meet and possibly tour some of the athletic facilities there. If you are single and looking for new things to do with other single residents, this is a great group to join. Check out our new website at cllsocialsingles.com or contact Elaine Vetter at elvetter@hotmail.com for more information.

Sports and Games Club By Pete Lyons We are here to help promote and support new or smaller games and sports activities that choose not to become clubs or need some assistance for startup such as Basketball, Mini golf, Cornhole, Fantasy Football, and Bocce Ball. Each of these activities have leaders that organize and supervise the events. If you have interest in helping with any of the activities or want to know more about the Sports and Games Club, contact one of the officers to discuss. And do not forget about our Bingo nights … six a year! Our revenues go to help other clubs such as Tennis, Billiards, Pickleball, Health and Fitness, purchase equipment and supplies that help the clubs run. We also donate revenues from one Bingo night to our “Community Fund” to be used in some manner to help out around the community. We recently donated monies to the elementary school on McEver to help out children in their school who otherwise would not have been able to celebrate this time of the year. Bingo Nights are always a sellout, loaded with lots of fun, and light snacks. Watch for the announcements for ticket sales and come join us.

To those new to our community, or who have not played tennis for a while, come out and join the fun on the courts during open play. We play on Tuesday (ladies), Wednesday (men) and Friday (mixed) at 9:30 am in a Round Robin format. Watch the Daily Update for information on clinics. For more information about tennis, contact Jim Seifert at seifertj@bellsouth.net.

Cresswind Theatre Celebrates Another Year of Success! By Wayne Blum Thank you, neighbors! The fall production of Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter” was perfection! We had over 520 neighbors, friends, and family members attend the four performances. Additionally, several of you stepped forward and helped to make it a success. We are currently in the process of working on selecting the next play. We are taking a welcome break to enjoy the upcoming holidays! Happy Holidays to all and we are looking forward to our next production. These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, lighting and sound engineers, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.” Please visit our website at: www.cresswindpa.com for more information. This year, 2019, promises to be another successful year for the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre.

Travel Club-Holiday Trip 2018: Then 2019 Here We Come! By Mary Hensien
The Community Travel Club, with over 665 members, has been very busy providing recreational traveling experiences for the Cresswind community. Joining the Community Travel Club is the best way to get to know your neighbors and to establish lifelong friends as you experience new adventures together! Our meetings are on the first Thursday of every month, 4:00 pm in the clubhouse. We welcome everyone! Around the middle of December, you probably noticed the two huge deluxe motor-coaches loading 80 of our residents as they headed off to Nashville, Tennessee for four days of Holiday fun. Accommodations at the Opryland Hotel were grand and the entertainment was outstanding. A Country Christmas made memories of a lifetime for all club members who enjoyed this trip. Last year, Cresswind’s own retired Delta pilots, Ron Stowe and Reg Girdharry, hosted members of the Community Travel Club on a fabulous tour of the Delta Flight Museum and a unique opportunity to feel a touch of the “Spirit of Delta”. It was such a popular day trip and so many folks raved about the experience we begged these gentlemen to please take us again. Tuesday, January 8th will prove to be yet another day to visit Delta’s Flight Museum and airport facilities. Lunch at the iconic Varsity restaurant in downtown Atlanta will follow the tours. On February 12th, we will have an opportunity to visit the beautiful Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of Atlanta United 2018 MLS Cup Champions and the Atlanta Falcons! We plan to hit the road at 10:30 so that we can enjoy lunch at Molly B’s, a restaurant in the stadium, before our 1:00 private tour. The bus will depart around 2:40, just in time to avoid rush hour traffic. On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 27th, we will have 2 loaded buses full of happy Cresswind neighbors on their way to the Fox Theater to see the Tony award-winning Broadway show Les Miserables. First, we will stop at Mary Mac’s, a top of the line “Grand Taste of the South” buffet style all-you-can-eat dinner. Our Fox Theater trips are always a sell out and this one is no exception! However, you never know when someone may have to cancel so it is to your advantage to get on our “wait list” so that you do not miss an opportunity should an opening occur. How well do you know YOUR TOWN? Gainesville is OUR town! Our Community Travel Club has been working closely with the City of Gainesville Tourism Department to offer “A Taste of Gainesville”- a day tour designed for the residents of Cresswind to show them all the hidden gems in OUR OWN CITY. On Monday, March 11th, put on your walking shoes and join us for a full day of all the wonderful things Gainesville, Georgia has to offer. One of our own residents, Bob Wheeler, will be sharing with us information about the impact the Poultry Industry has had upon our city and the world! Page 42 | The Waterfall | January/February
Join your Community Travel Club! Come to our meetings and visit our website to get updates and availability on all of our trips, meeting dates, and answers to any questions you may have.

A Year of Pickleball in Review By Jan Cieply
The Pickleball Club had a very full year with membership doubling to over 260 players. We had six tournaments which included a first time Novice Tournament. In addition, we also offered New Player Instruction, a Novice League, Men’s and Women’s Leagues, a Pot Luck Supper at the Pavilion, White Elephant BINGO (which was a huge success) and a Holiday Party. By invitation, Pickleball professional Scott Golden provided group clinics for those wishing to participate. The Brick Fundraiser was quite a success with 69 bricks sold. This allowed us to purchase one of the two 10-foot double seated covered cabana benches. A generous donation from Benchmark Physical Therapy gave us the ability to purchase the second Cabana bench. These benches were placed between Pickleball Courts 4/5 and 5/6. They have been quickly embraced by the Pickleball community. NE Georgia Health System has also made a generous donation to the Pickleball Club and will sponsor a new tournament in September 2019 which will be followed by a lunch at the Pavilion. This will also allow us to purchase new nets and frames for the courts when necessary. For a second year, Reed Financial was a generous sponsor of another popular and successful tournament which was followed by a delicious dinner for the players and their guest. 2019 promises to be full of League play, tournaments, and lots of camaraderie. If you have wondered if this is the game for you, come to the Novice training which will begin in February. Open Play occurs every day except Fridays. Check the Pickleball website (cresswindpickleball.com) for the times.

“Make & Take” Art and Creative Club By Kathie Zeranski The Tangler Group got together to practice and share and created some really fun Pumpkin Trays. In December, we tried decorating ornaments! Make & Take has offered a Beginning Calligraphy Class in November and December. The two groups have been learning the Italic Alphabet and a number of people want to continue and learn the Gothic Alphabet. We have had a great time learning how to use these specialty pens and create beautiful lettering. As the New Year begins, I am looking for ideas for Make & Take Classes. If you have an idea or if you would like to lead a class, please contact me and I will set it up. Cresswinders
