emerges from the winter slumber, it is time to once again remind everyone that more people are out and about. They are walking, riding bikes, and just enjoying being outside. Speed is still a problem throughout the community as well as maintaining a single lane. Please slow down! The 30 seconds you save getting out to Browns Bridge and having to wait is just not worth a life. We have experienced a lot of bump and runs here at the clubhouse over the last couple of months. Accidents happen, but if you bump someone’s vehicle, please come and make a report. Think about how you would feel if you came out and someone had bumped into your car and damaged it. Be a good neighbor and let someone know. Do not forget the monthly Board meeting on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Stay informed by attending any informational meetings and do not rely on the gossip. Remember that unless you heard it from a Board member or staff, you might be relying on unreliable information. Have a safe and pleasant spring, and as always the best way to reach me is through email at gary.hulion@fsresidential.com.

Spring has Sprung in the Community Garden By Sarah Galshack You may have noticed the activity in and around “ Common Ground”, our aptly named Cresswind Community Garden. The perennial beds were expanded and planted, the fence got a fresh coat of paint, the shed was moved to a better spot, some new boxes were installed. Thanks to both Box renters and Friends of the Garden for all the work put into sprucing it up. All Cresswind residents are invited to come and take a stroll through the garden. You may learn the names of perennials that may inspire you to plant at your own home. Perhaps you would like to become a friend of the Garden. Email Dave Rusk and ask to join the list; the only requirement is an interest in garden activities. Remember we have speakers usually on the second Saturday of the month in the Ballroom at 9 am. Upcoming speakers will talk about friendly bugs, not so friendly bugs, and how to manage both, and in May the topic will be our neighborhood birds. Watch the Daily Update for all the details. Again, as everything starts to come alive, do not miss the opportunity to enjoy some peace and beauty by taking a stroll. See you in the Garden!!

Welcome Committee News By Denise Skeels Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of twelve members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held Newcomer’s Orientations in the Ballroom in February 2019 and May 2019 for those new residents closing on houses from January 2019- May 2019. Approximately 76 residents attended these two presentations by MTScapes, First Service, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. The next New Resident Orientation will be in August, 2019. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at skeelsdenise@ gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents. Welcome to Cresswind!

Health & Fitness Committee

Fine Furniture & Interior Design

By Laurie Solomon

The acquisition and utilization of our new SciFit equipment has been an overwhelming success. Ava, JP, and Cheryl have trained more than 200 residents on the new machines. The increased usage of the gym by residents is a tribute to the adaptability of the equipment to fill individual needs. Our Fitness Center continues to be a safe all-inclusive environment as we remind residents of the Gym Rules in the Daily Update and post them in the gym. We are proud to announce that all of our instructors are nationally certified which requires annual continuing education credits. Kudos to the dedication they have to stay well informed. On Friday April 12, Dr. Jim Lewis and his physical therapy students from Brenau University held a free balance screen for the first nine residents who signed up. Hopefully he will return to give other residents the same opportunity. If this is the case, it will be announced in the Daily Update. Falls are the number 1 cause of injuries in seniors. Fall prevention means injury prevention. We are happy to announce that our Health Fair is scheduled for August 17th. Health oriented vendors and professionals will be here to provide you with products and information for your wellbeing. Our previous two Fairs were well attended and residents came away with valuable knowledge and resources. The Health and Fitness Committee always welcomes your comments and suggestions. We continue with our mission of maintaining a social and safe environment for residents to enjoy a healthy lifestyle through fitness. Come join us!

New Skipper Comes Aboard By Sue Garcia

May of 2015 began a very significant month (even year) for Cresswind at Lake Lanier. The reason being that is when Mark LaClaire started his employment here as Lifestyle Director and this place has never been the same since! I recall shaking his hand along with dozens of other residents at the “Meet & Greet” and wondering, “Handsome he is, but what can he bring to us?” Mark’s experience was adequate enough if not outstanding and his positive attitude was certainly a plus but I was not convinced his promises would pan out. Mark said he would bring creativity, thinking outside the box, and much more. But has he? Yes! He promised plenty of “crazy for starters” and he has delivered that in numerous ways (just see the photos!) He said he would spice things up and he has added a definite flavor to our lives and we are loving it. Mark was one of us from day one, just as he promised to be while allowing us to communicate our wishes about what sort of activities we desired and what vision we had for our future. What a team we have become! Thank you, Mark La Claire, for your passion, enthusiasm, attentiveness to each of us, and for accepting this job four years ago!

Going Back in Time for History of Cresswind… to 2012 By Sue Garcia The Opening of The Club On the evening of May 19, 2012, each Cresswind homeowner realized the culmination of a long-term dream at the soft opening of The Club (just for residents). Looks of amazement and wonder blanketed all faces as they strolled through the elegantly appointed sitting areas, card rooms, fitness areas, and library. Making their way around all three floors, homeowners continually voiced their approval and the long-anticipated clubhouse had indeed become a reality. The indoor pool, outdoor pool area plus game stations dazzled everyone while the pavilion with overlook and pickleball court were like icing on the cake. After enjoying a delectable catered meal by Chef Kern, homeowners danced and swayed to the music of the Caribbean Steele Band. This evening was only the first enjoyable and fulfilling event of many to come in the days ahead for the residents of Cresswind. Reflections of the Public Opening of the Clubhouse Six Years Ago This June “Ahs,” and “Wows” were the comments of the day at the long awaited Cresswind Clubhouse Grand Opening which took place on Saturday, June 16, 2012. It was an enormous success! The weather was perfect for the 10:00 am ribbon cutting with Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan and Mayor Pro-Tem George Wangemann. It was estimated there were over 1000 attendees for the function! Guests were entertained by the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra performing behind the Club while enjoying a complimentary lunch of pasta salad, fresh mixed fruit, grilled chicken sandwiches and drinks. Many took advantage of the outdoor amenities by treating themselves to a game of bocce ball, pickleball, horseshoes, or just relaxing poolside while enjoying the music and the beautiful view of Lake Lanier. Inside the clubhouse, residents and visitors were fortunate to have several activities taking place. Walter Reeves, the Georgia Gardener, spoke to a standing room only crowd about proper landscape and garden planting procedures, followed by a live demonstration. Gainesville’s own Quinlan Arts Center provided a lovely display of pottery, mosaic tile art, and hand-built clay pieces in our Arts and Crafts Room. Chef Andrew Brackner from Talk of the Town Catering delighted all with his demonstrations in our Demonstration Kitchen. The Library was brought to life with the support of local authors and artisans such as Andrew Corsaro, Shane Etter, Barbara Peters, and Chris Barber. One visitor from Flowery Branch commented that the Grand Opening was “truly a first-class event at a first-class facility.”

What is a Craftsman House? By Landy Johnson, Architectural Review Committee Chair

All of the homes within Cresswind at Lake Lanier are Craftsman-style houses. While there are a variety of models, they all share similar characteristics and are readily distinguished from other popular American house styles such as Victorian or Tudor or Cape Cod. Craftsman homes originated during the era of the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States. This artistic upheaval arose in the early 20th century, and was a revolt against the more ornate and extravagant styles that had previously been popular. The movement emphasized natural materials, such as wood and brick and stone, and simple designs, not just for houses but in furnishings and décor. Craftsman homes were often bungalow-style and featured open floor plans and plenty of windows. When porches were present, their columns were simple and lacked the fancy top portions seen on Ionic or Corinthian columns that one can find on many of the houses on historic Green Street in Gainesville. Roofs on Craftsman houses have a low pitch and exposed beams, and wide eaves. There are a number of Craftsman houses around Gainesville, including in older neighborhoods off of Oak Street (between Washington and Academy). In the 1920s, it was possible to buy the blueprints and almost all materials for a Craftsman house from the Sears Roebuck catalog (a five-room bungalow was $2,554). The materials would arrive via railroad boxcar, and the homeowner would have to hire a builder or work with a group of friends or family members to assemble the house. At Cresswind, some of the Architectural Rules are based on maintaining the Craftsman style as a consistent appearance of the residences here. Attaching a Victorian turret to a house, or incorporating stucco siding for a Tudor look, would not be approved. Where you see phrases such as “front doors must be consistent with the types and styles commonly used in Cresswind,” to some extent this refers to the Craftsman style. Similarly, “Replacement garage doors must also conform to a design, style, and material established for the Community.” We are fortunate to reside in an attractive residential area whose style is based on an historic period in American design. Canine Club Bark Beat News

CPAC End of Season Party By Chuck Bridwell

By Jami Dittmeier The Canine Club paw prints continue to march through the year with several club members taking a field trip on March 7th to The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia. Club members toured the facility with Olivia Paul, Volunteer & Education Coordinator and heard a presentation by Julie Edwards, Executive Director. Several members signed on as volunteer companions for the cats and dogs waiting to find a good home. The Month of April saw the club visiting its resident founder Michelle Fronheiser’s home for a Back-Yard Dog Training Demonstration. In May, the club members will travel to the Gainesville Police Department for a K-9 Police Dog Demonstration. Did you notice, under the leadership of Karen Geganto, exciting things are happening at Cresswind Dog Park – The Pooch Patch? With help from the HOA, several large trees were taken down because they were unsafe. Wood chips are replacing pine straw. The Girl Scouts are evaluating a community service project to repaint the blue fence. More work needs to be done, but we need your help to make this a “world class dog park.” If you are interested in being a “Friend of the Pooch Patch,” contact Karen Geganto or Sue DeCrescenzo for details. Please watch the Daily Updates for more Bark Beat News. As always, any resident is welcome to attend monthly meetings or help at the Pooch Patch.

The Cresswind Performing Arts Club will be celebrating its best season ever with a party in the ballroom on Sunday, May 26th at 4:30-6:30pm. Anyone who has been part of any CPAC event is invited to this free event. This includes the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre, Cresswind Community Chorus, Annual Variety Show, Liar’s Club, Performing Arts Technical Team or any of the other CPAC groups such as Storytelling, Scene Actors Guild, Playscripts, and Neighborhood Bands. We will celebrate the success of the 201819 CPAC season as folks bring appetizers and drinks, plus there will be a fun program with videos, games, prizes, and a variety of activities. Mim Gilberg will also be honored for her years of service in theatre, chorus, and other events. CPAC members can let us know they are coming by responding to the CPAC Evite that has been sent out or by contacting Whit Adams at whitetta48@gmail.com.

Bowling Club

By Phil Vinyard

When we first moved to Cresswind in 2013, I was excited to find out there was a group of residents that bowled in a weekly league during the fall/winter season. The small group of residents was led by Dale Hoberg and Dale was kind enough to invite me to be on his team. We bowled in Gainesville in a league called the Golden Seniors and most of the members came from other parts of the Gainesville/Hall County area. It was a fun league and we got to know lots of other interesting people from the area. After the first year of bowling, Dale asked me if I would head up the bowling group from Cresswind and take over the expansion of the group. I agreed to do this and began utilizing the Daily Update and the growth of homes within Cresswind to grow our bowling group. We added new teams to the Golden Seniors and after the second year, it became obvious that with our growth the same league would not be able to accommodate all the teams due to the limitation of the number of alleys. At our next August organization meeting in 2015, we brought up this issue and collectively we decided it was time to try to form our own league comprised exclusively of residents of Cresswind. We did in fact do this successfully and Jim Selbitschka (our top male bowler) was elected league president. We continued bowling in Gainesville for the next two years before our growth and other issues directed us to explore finding another location. This ultimately led us to the Stars and Strikes Bowling Center in Buford where we currently bowl and have enjoyed great service and hospitality. It has been my pleasure to have served as the league president for the last two years and to see our league continue to grow. This year we have seen many new faces in the league combined with those that helped start the bowling group from years ago. The competition has been tighter than ever with no one team dominating the others and every week a challenge to get points. This will be my final year as the league president and I want to express my thanks to all the club members and residents who have supported me and the league and have made it one of the best clubs in Cresswind. Thank you.

Adventures in Dining

By Karen Silverthorn Our dinner group wrapped up our seventh season in March with a delicious menu celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Participants have also enjoyed Thai, Italian, and savory fall recipes over the last several months. We take a break over the summer and resume our international or themed meals in the fall. Mark your calendars now for the 2019 – 2020 season. The next Adventures in Dining dates are: October 5, November 2, 2019, and February 1, March 7, 2020. All recipes are provided and courses assigned to those attending. There are always a total of four couples/pairs of people at each host home. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses each using the same recipes and making the same courses. Food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. Anyone can join at any time during the year. If you are interested in joining, email directly the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter. net) to be added to the email list. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

Cooking Club

By: David Jones

The Cooking Club has started off 2019 with a very busy calendar of events. In January, the Cooking Club hosted a complimentary “Open House” for all Cresswind residents. The new Board of Directors was introduced and the planned events for 2019 were introduced to those attending. It gave many new residents an opportunity to volunteer for upcoming events being announced. The always popular Super Bowl party in February led by Bob Polinsky was well attended and everyone enjoyed the delicious tailgate food that was served. The Chili Cook-off in February was a fun event. We had our very own Cresswind Blue Grass band and 16 homeowners entered their chili in the cook-off. It was a sold-out event with Heidi Anderson and Rose Micuch as the event leaders. The St. Patrick’s Day party led by Pam Snell was a huge success. The Cresswind Cloggers clogged to some Irish favorites and what would St Patty’s Day be without corned beef and cabbage along with shepherd’s pie, Irish trifles, Irish laced cookies, beer, and Baileys Irish crème. This sold out event was a celebration of the wearing of the green! The “Dining Around the World Event” led by Rose Micuch and Paula King was a new event and a great way to introduce

foods from all over the world. There were over 16 countries represented and hosted by Cresswind residents who shared a sample taste of the country they chose to represent. This event proved to be a fun and successful event and will be sure to be repeated next year. What else do we have planned for you? Plenty! Cinco de Mayo, Fish Fry, and Garden to Table with more fun events on the horizon! The Cooking Club recently purchased a 15-tray warming oven for the Club kitchen. This new piece of equipment has been put to use with the events that have taken place – a great addition to our kitchen. As always, the Cooking Club appreciates all its members and the support given by all the volunteers for the many events planned. Your participation makes it truly a great club with fun and engaging events to be enjoyed by all members!!

Kayak Club News

By Dick Osborne

The Kayak Club launched the 2019 season with a Community Kayak Day on April 6th. Last-minute concerns with the weather forecast and wasps announcing the coming of warmer weather around Dock A, almost forced a postponement. But the forecast changed, the wasps stayed quiet, and the day’s events went on. In the morning, 22 Cresswind residents enjoyed being on the water—almost all for the first time—with kayaks, paddles, and life jackets provided by club members. Club members on the dock showed our new kayakers how to enter and exit a kayak (safely and without taking a bath), and other members in their kayaks provided instruction and watchful eyes as they led groups of two or three “newbies” on brief excursions in the Cressswind cove. It was fun seeing all the smiling faces as people enjoyed their introductions to kayaking. Late in the afternoon the club hosted a community-wide social gathering at the clubhouse pavilion. About sixty club members and other Cresswind residents enjoyed a small feast of appetizers and other treats brought by everyone. We then enjoyed three great presentations. Reg Girdharry, a Cresswind resident, displayed and talked about the beautiful wood kayak that he built. Bonny Putney, Vice President of the Lake Lanier Association, spoke about kayaking on Lake Lanier and choosing kayaks and equipment. Chuck Kelemen, a Cresswind resident, and another member of the local US Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla, talked about safety regulations and safe boating practices for kayakers. And Outside World Outfitters in Dawsonville showed several kayak-related items and provided two door prizes. Next up? Saturday morning (and possibly some weekday evening) group paddles. And, in September, a group paddle to and from Skogies for breakfast. Interested? Join us at the next meeting of the Kayak Club on May 14th at 5:30 p.m. on the pavilion.

Ciao, amici! Benvenuti! Traveling to Italy? Or just want to learn to speak one of the most lyrical of the Romance languages?

By Harriet Gershkowitz

Then join us, a group of Cresswinders who love the Italian language, its people, its food, its culture. We welcome all levels to this new club. Our goal is to learn to converse in Italian and have fun. We utilize several tools for learning including documents, apps like Duolingo, Google Translate, Word Reference, as well as Pimsleur, and the tried and true, dry erase board. Virginia Chapman, our native speaker leader, engages us in lively conversations and coordinates outings. Gordon and Natalie Watts assist with club logistics and small group conversations and whatever else is needed.

In the next few months, we have a trip to Frogtown Winery, a Painting and Wine Party and our Annual Fashion Show. Members should watch for emails with details for all upcoming events.

Fun with Fashion had two very successful events in March. First, we had 28 + ladies on a fun day at the AmericasMart and then 60+ members spent a wonderful afternoon at a Presentation by Mimi Szutz and Lynn Meek. The ladies showed us different approaches to packing and shared many tips on traveling. Some of our members also shared their own tips and travel adventures.

Make & Take Plus Tanglers

Ladies Golf

By: Kathie Zeranski We have had several fun Make & Take Classes the past few months. Ingrid Bolton taught us how to do Ukrainian Eggs. The process is really interesting and the results amazing! What a great time we had. Then we had Abby Saccomanno teach a Floral Arranging Class. Everyone left with their own beautiful arrangement either for a gift or to enjoy themselves!

Ladies Golf is in full swing! Every Thursday morning through October you will find us at Chattahoochee Golf Club. This year we added “Travel Tuesday” ...four times during the season we will travel to different courses for a day of golf. April 16th, we played The Hooch, an 18-hole executive course. And our very popular Nine & Dine kicked off on Friday, April 26th. This is a member/guest event which includes a 9-hole scramble, buffet dinner, and prizes...always a fun time!

I am in the process of scheduling another class with Jeanne Melsen on Mixed Media Collage and the Tanglers will be getting back together in May. If you have ever doodled, come check us out! Tangling is basically “fancy doodling”.

We welcome new golfers any time...for more information, check out the Cresswind website under Info/Clubs and click on Ladies Golf to get to our website. Contact: Pat Morris, plmorris14@gmail.com

I am looking for more ideas and with new residents hoping there are talented people that would like to share their interests with us. If you have a talent you would like to share, please email me at ZKathie54@gmail.com

Model Railroading

By Bill Edmondson

Our Cresswind Model Railroad club held a three-day event in March with various “how-to” clinics on locomotive maintenance, car weathering, and proper set-up of couplers and weight distribution per NMRA specs. We also learned how to download and use apps on our phones allowing us to operate several trains at a time and control their movements with our phone. Model railroading has come a long way since we were kids…it is amazing what technology has allowed us to do! Our weekend culminated with an Open House on Sunday, where 121 residents/guests came to observe our operations and engineering detail (see photos below). Our club is open to any Cresswind resident with model railroading interests…just email Brian Chapin (brianchapin@charter.net) or Bill Edmondson (wke2003@bellsouth.net) , or visit our club website soon on the CresswindatLL.com site.

Cresswind Neighborhood Theater News By Wayne Blum

We are getting close! The cast for “You Can’t Take It with You” has settled into rehearsals and have been hard at work memorizing their lines. This cast size falls short of the largest cast we have had here at Cresswind. However, it will be the most actors/actresses we have had on the stage at one time. Cast size is 17! For those receiving their first Waterfall, “You Can’t Take It with You” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. It debuted on Broadway in 1936 and ran for 838 performances. In 1938 it was adapted to film by Frank Capra and starred Jean Arthur, Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, and Edward Arnold. It is a play about a man from a family of rich snobs who becomes engaged to a woman from a good-natured but decidedly eccentric family. The film received two Academy Awards from seven nominations: Best Picture and Best Director for Frank Capra. This was Capra’s third Oscar for Best Director in just five years, following It Happened One Night (1934) and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936). It was also the highest-grossing picture of the year. Performance dates are from May 16th through the 19th. May 16-18th begin at 7:30 PM. The performance on May 19th begins at 3:00 PM These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. In fact, it took well over 100 volunteers for our last play, “Present Laughter.” If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.”

Here we go….Pickleball Update

By Rosemarie Bower

Spring is in the air! It has been nice to see folks coming out and enjoying the outdoors as our weather warms up for us. NOVICE training continues with Susie Hollbrook and Brenda Young teaching the class. Great to see new players on our courts! Training continues Thursday afternoons. For more information check our website: www.cresswindpickleball.com Spring Leagues began March 14. Wow! Some great competition out there – plus fun! Our weather has cooperated for our Thursday games. Twenty folks came over from Deaton Creek to play with us. A great time for all and a great turn out. Thanks Amy Pike for getting this event together. Saturday, March 30th turned out to be a beautiful day for our 4th Annual Clay Myers Tournament. Prior to the start of the tournament, we had the unveiling of new bricks just outside the courts. Thanks to Gary Crawford and Linda Brown for getting this done in time for the tournament. Stop by and check it out. After the unveiling, we had 64 players participate that day. We concluded the evening with a potluck gathering at the pavilion.

Look what we found at our Deaton Creek Friendly St. Patrick’s Day Celebration!

Congratulations to our winners: Intermediate Players: Gold: Natt Davis Silver: Al Pileggi Intermediate Players: Gold: Virginia Chapman Silver: Sybille Nolting Advanced Players: Gold: Gregg Pike Silver: Gordan Watts Advanced Players: Gold: Andrea Youshimatz Silver: Jan Cieply We begin Monday Night Mixed Doubles May 6th. These are fun evenings. This is a great way for all of us to meet new players and improve our play. No sign up required – show up and enjoy! Our next tournament will be the Reed Tournament on Saturday, June 1st. Check out our website for more information. As we all become more active with the warmer temperatures and the longer days, we need to remember to stretch and hydrate as we do activities. Christopher Dearwent, NE Georgia Director of Athletic Training, will be here on May 30th to hold an evening clinic on our tennis courts. We invite all to come out. More information will be in the Daily Update or check out our website: www.cresswindpickleball.com Page 46 | The Waterfall | May/June

What’s Happening

The Quilting Club By Evelyne Palmer The Quilting Club has been busy. In February and March, we held demonstrations conducted by our talented members Mary Parsons, on using a color wheel to pick your fabric colors, and Doris Neely, on how to use rulers. Our demonstrations are held the 3rd Thursday of the month. In March, the Club made a donation quilt for the Elachee Nature Science Center Benefit and Auction. This “Bug Jar” Quilt was designed and completed by Marsha Low and Eleanor Whalen, with a little assistance from the rest of the group. Job well done! We delivered eleven more quilts to Legacy Link for seniors in need in Hall County and surrounding areas and completed seven Quilts for Kids. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft Room. All levels of Quilters, from beginner to experienced are welcome to stop by, meet us, and see the work we do. If you have an interest in sewing and want to join us, we welcome all new prospective members. We do many quilting related projects, big and small, work at individual levels, and have fun! Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net. The Club is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

RV Club Rolls Along! By Karen Silverthorn & Brenda Crosby Cresswind’s R.V. Club is rolling! A group of seven rigs stayed for a week in March at Coastal Georgia RV Resort in Brunswick, GA. There, we explored the Golden Isles, toured Jekyll Island, enjoyed some delicious seafood meals and gathered nightly for Happy Hour! Members met in April at the clubhouse for a R.V. Club Social event. While planning has started for the 2020 camping season, there are still several trips organized for this year. Do you have an R.V.? All the trips are organized so members can stay only a few days or the whole week. Perhaps you would like to join us in Hiawassee, GA in May to tour the surrounding area? Members are booking a visit to the Georgia mountains in the fall. We are registered to camp at River Vista in Dillard from October 13th to the 20th. The R.V. Club has planned a trip to Florida for November 14th through the 21st to enjoy the annual Sandcastle and Sidewalk Chalk Festivals near Sarasota. Stay tuned for more social gatherings during the summer months. The Steering Committee is actively planning for 2020, so trip suggestions are always welcome. Let us know if you are interested in joining the RV Club. Please email: cll.rvclub@gmail.com.

Tennis Club

By Sandy Barmak

Just as the spring flowers burst into bloom, so did our ladies’ and men’s competitive tennis teams spring into action. Most Monday mornings you will find one of two Men’s Silverball teams, captained by Dan Skeels and George Majesko, on the courts. On some Mondays, you will see the Ladies’ USTA 40+ league, captained by Linda Merritt playing women the age of their daughters. Our ladies are also playing USTA 55+, captained by Lee Jackson on Fridays and USTA 65+, captained by Shirley Osterloh, which had not started play as of this writing. There is lots of activity on the courts with our men participating in three ALTA leagues. The Alta B5 team is currently leading its division with an eye on the playoffs and more. Bill Papciak and Jim Snell are the captains. Heading up the ALTA B7 team (former City champs at the C level) are Bill Papciak, Rick Osterloh, and Mike Marsico. Rick Osterloh has his work cut out as he is also captain of ALTA C1 with Phil Buchen. Stay tuned for the next Waterfall to hear about our successes of the season. Alas, a rainy February cancelled all of our clinics. If you want to improve your game, or are rusty after a lapse of tennis play and thinking about joining us, watch the Daily Update for information on the clinics. Everyone is welcome. Weather was not our friend and rain also cancelled our March round robin social. We anticipate better luck for our next social which is planned for Saturday, June 9th at 9 am. It will be a morning of fun, food, festivities, and some friendly competition with prizes. So, plan on coming out to participate in some lively recreation. For more information about tennis happenings, contact our president, Jim Seifert at seife4rtj@bellsouth.net.

Social Singles

By Elaine Vetter

Social Singles started our spring with a fun celebration for Mardi Gras. We enjoyed a potluck dinner featuring many New Orleans recipes, a trivia game, and crowned our very own Queen, King & court! An outing to Yerkes Primate Center, a facility associated with Emory University, was enjoyed by a group of our members. We toured a small portion of the 100+ acres located in Gwinnett County and learned about the research that is being conducted there. A new weekly event has started where members meet on Saturday evening and decide on a place to go dine. We have had as few as 4 to as many as 16 break up into groups for the evening. We appropriately call this “Saturday Night Live” and it has been a great way for individuals to meet and get to know others in a smaller setting. Our annual meeting and election of new Board was held on Sunday, April 14th followed by a pizza party and Social. We have given Gainesville’s newest Escape Room a try with an event planned at “Against the Clock” in late April. And our May outing will be an evening of dining scheduled at “Galloping Gallette” in Braselton which specializes in crepes. Other regularly scheduled monthly activities include walks/hikes, lunch bunch, bowling, and a meal out for just the guys. If you are single and looking for new things to do with other single residents, this is a great group to join. Check out our website at cllsocialsingles.com or contact Elaine Vetter at elvetter@hotmail.com for more information. Page 50 | The Waterfall | January/February May/June March/April

A Great Time to Hike Our Nature Trails

by Bill Dickey

Like the fall, spring is a great time to hike our trails. The rains of February and March sent Lake Lanier to a near a record level of 5 feet over pool, putting the bridge on Goldfinch Trail underwater. Everything is back to normal and all trails are open. Hopefully you had a chance to walk our trails in April and spotted the dogwoods and native azaleas in bloom, the birds and wildlife (including our deer herd). Studies have shown that walks in nature boosts your mental physical well- being. A few of the potential benefits: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Fresh air has more oxygen Greenscapes raise serotonin levels Sensory stimulation Increases feelings of well-being and lowers depression and anxiety Relieves stress Outdoor exposure increases vitamin D levels and helps optimize hormones Longer healthier lives

As part of the Trail Club, a hiking group has been formed to take advantage of our trails as well as those in Gainesville and North Georgia. You are able to contact others in the group and spend an hour or a day here or in the nearby mountains or parks hiking with your friends. Contact Whit Adams for details. Reminder- Your dog is welcome on the trails, just be sure to have them on a leash for their safety. Treat the trails as you would when you walk your dog on our sidewalks- bring a poop bag. Any problems like a downed tree on the trail, contact the property manager.

Cresswind LL Veterans Inc

By Roy Gogel

The charity’s members touched over fifty (50) lives and their loved ones in greater Gainesville in the first three months of the year - Touching One Life at a Time as per our slogan. We have become a valuable resource to the local United Way in addition to the Veterans Administration and other groups. Additionally, the successful Food Drive in April - thanks to you - will provide food to hundreds of individuals across the next several months. A young Veteran faced with bad current circumstances was provided an automobile at a ceremony on March 16th. The automobile was donated by a Cresswind resident and Southfield Classics. This car should catapult this fine young man financially, making a major impact in his life; he is already giving back to other Veterans now that he has reliable wheels. On May 7th, we coordinated with other Veteran groups in Atlanta, supporting the Honor Flights - taking World War II and Korean War Veterans to Washington, DC, for a whirlwind one-day tour of the various war and historical monuments. If you or a loved one locally are interested in future flights, contact us at www. cresswindveterans.org. Coming up! CONCERT ON THE LAWN. On Saturday, June 27th, you will not want to miss Cresswind’s own Richard Petty with his Jazz Band. This group has played numerous times here and Richard ensures us that this time the band is even better and stronger than the last time - if that’s possible - and will include a special trombonist! Plan on coming out and enjoying a great, great evening. Regarding furniture donations, thank you for them one and all. However, mattresses can no longer be accepted. Sorry, but this just changed. Other furniture and bicycles will still be accepted. Thank you. May/June | The Waterfall | Page 51

By Mary Hensien

Summer is upon us and your Community Travel Club is on the GO! For those who wondered how to fill their longer daylight hours, we launched off in March on a full day tour of a “Taste of Gainesville” showing our members many of the wonderful gems and highlights our city has to offer all year around. In April, our club members were able to experience all three of these Atlanta landmarks, culminating with a lovely lunch at the Swan House Restaurant. Bible Study Club

By Dave Dittmeier

The many Bible Study Clubs continued on several fronts. The Women’s Bible Study concluded a study of the books of 1, 2 & 3 John and then embarked on a Study of Ephesians. The Friday morning Men’s Bible Study continued an indepth study of the Gospel of Luke and the new evening Men’s Bible Study began a study of Gospel of Mark. Several Couples Bible Studies continue to meet in private homes in the community. The Way did a study on the passion of Christ as found in the Gospel of Matthew. All of these various groups are open to all residents regardless of the levels of Bible knowledge as we read, teach, share and learn. Plus, we have no dues. The Bible Study Club also continued its monthly NonDenominational Services with local pastors/ministry leaders as guest speakers. In March, we hosted the recently retired pastor from First Baptist Church in Flowery Branch; April was an ordained minister who is a resident who shared the message of “Christian Metamorphosis: A Butterfly’s Example”; and May is the Founder and Executive Director from Eagle Ranch. The non-denominational services are held the first Sunday of the month. All residents are welcome to attend.

Car Club Moves On!

By: Kevin Medley

The Cresswind Car Club is establishing its presence and we now have nearly 60 members. The club caters to residents who have a general or specific interest in all things automotive and meets each second Monday in the Clubhouse Kitchen to discuss a variety of topics. In April, we visited the extremely impressive private car collection of Milton Robson, which also included a BBQ lunch. We also had a very impressive presentation from a local car race driver, tuner, and builder. Future activities include more car shows, track days, and museum visits. All residents are encouraged and welcome to attend our meetings.
