Garden Committee

By David Rusk

The Community Garden, managed by the Garden Committee, is pleased to invite all Cresswind residents to visit the garden at their leisure to enjoy our gardening efforts. July is a great time to enjoy the many perennials and annuals we have planted around the garden perimeter, as well as to appreciate the efforts of our 58 raised bed gardeners. The perennial gardens feature a large herb garden, a pollinator garden, muscadine grapes, and hundreds of perennials and annuals. We now qualify for certification as a Monarch Waystation and have planted numerous varieties of milkweed to attract the monarchs. Visitors are welcome to roam the garden, look, photo, and admire, but asked not to harvest the flowers or vegetables. We also sponsor monthly meetings with guest speakers sharing information on a variety of gardening topics. All residents are invited to these monthly meetings. This October, we will again be sponsoring a scarecrow contest open to participation by residents, with scarecrows on display from early October through Halloween.

Health & Fitness Committee By Laurie Solomon

In an effort to provide residents with a Fitness Center that caters to the individual differences in health status, physical fitness, and previous exercise experience, we continue to add equipment that satisfies that goal. We would like to thank Sports & Games for their generous donation enabling us to purchase a set of body bars ranging from 9 lbs. to 36 lbs. These bars are foam covered for comfort and can be used with both hands simultaneously. The bars will be mounted in order to have easier accessibility. We also added two more rope tricep attachments. Another “thank you” goes out to a generous resident allowing us to purchase a Life Cycle upright bike. On June 11th, The Health & Fitness Committee in connection with Northside Hospital sponsored Dr. Jeffrey Garrett, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacements, speaking on joint health. Lunch was also included for the over 100 residents in attendance. We look forward to sponsoring more health-related seminars in the future. If you have requests for future topics, please put them in the suggestion box located in the gym. Our Health Fair is right around the corner on Saturday, August 17th from 10 to 1pm in the Clubhouse. Our previous two Fairs were overwhelming successes. We on the Committee encourage all residents to come and try our safe, adaptive equipment for both the physiological and psychological benefits to be gained.

Marina Committee By Randy Garcia

The Cresswind Marina Committee (CMC) continues to oversee the management of the Cresswind Marina Exclusive Common Area. Committee members include Randy Garcia, Warren Lang, Dave Pech, Vickie Gassman, and Reg Girdharry. The CMC has worked with the Board to identify and address issues related to our marina, its budget, and our Board’s target of a 2019 marina transition. We have also worked with Board and management to identify and remediate assessment billing issues. In May, we brought all Slip (Use Right) Owners together for discussion of numerous marina related topics and for a marina member social / mixer. Good food, good drink, and a great time was had by all.

Adventures in Dining

Bible Study Club

Our dinner group takes a break over the summer and will resume our international or themed meals in the fall. The next Adventures in Dining dates are October 5th, November 2nd, 2019 and February 1st, March 7th, 2020. All recipes are provided and courses assigned to those attending. There are always a total of four couples/pairs of people at each host home. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses each using the same recipes and making the same courses. Food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Course leads are assigned to help answer ingredient and cooking questions. Anyone can join at any time during the year, but annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. If you are interested in joining, email directly the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the email list. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

The Bible Study Clubs in Cresswind are alive and active! The Women’s Bible Study concluded a study of the book of Ephesians and decided to take the summer off. The Friday morning Men’s Bible Study completed an in-depth study of the Gospel of Luke and commenced a study of the book of Acts. The evening Men’s Bible Study continues with a study of the Gospel of Mark. Several Couples Bible Studies continue to meet in private homes in the community. All of these various groups are open to all residents regardless of the levels of Bible knowledge as we read, teach, share and learn. Plus, we have no dues!

By Karen Silverthorn

By Dave Dittmeier

Bible Study Club members attended a National Day of Prayer breakfast at the Civic Center where the guest speaker was Dr. Emir Caner, president of Truett McConnell University. This event was attended by over 400 individuals.

The End of the Regular Bowling Season

By Phil Vinyard

The Cresswind Bowling Club held our end of season banquet on April 25th. Lots of good food, laughter, and money was shared with all of the team members, with substitutes, and spouses also attending. A total of $7690 in prize money was distributed among the teams based upon their team standings and individual prize winners. Our league season is divided into two halves with the first place team from each half competing at season end for the overall championship. The winning team this year was “High Hopes” with Bob Rivers as team captain along with John and Charlene Shambach and Andy Hampton. The runner up team was “Pin Pals” captained by Jim Cook. Bob’s team shared in $500 of prize money. Jim Selbitschka had the individual high men’s average for the season with a 194.89 and Lois Worlock, in her first season in the league, had the high average for the women with a 143.17. Vence Rollins and Nikki Mason were “most improved” over the course of the season, Jim Selbitschka had the high scratch game with a 241 for the men and Jean Metzger for the women with a 221. Other individual winners were Jim Cook and Elaine Rogers for high scratch series, Rob Plawecki and Mary Joan Gogel for high handicap game and Dan Gershkowitz and Eileen Langan for high handicap series. All of the individual winners received a $50 cash prize. Several of our bowlers are continuing the bowling competition this summer in a summer league at Stars and Strikes in Buford. This can become a year round way to have fun and socialize if you are looking for a new activity. For the rest of us, we will await our fall organization meeting to get our teams ready to compete in September. This meeting will be sometime in August in the Cresswind Ballroom. So look for the announcement in the Daily Update.

Dog Park Gets a Splash of Color! By Jami Dittmeier The Canine Club wishes to give a huge round of “apaws” to Karen Geganto who spearheaded the fence painting of the Pooch Patch. She along with her team of two assistants Pam Timm and Rose Hosey completed this project despite the grueling hot weather. Additionally, Karen along with the help of the HOA has begun the interior cleaning of the patch with the addition of pine bark mulch and overseeing the removal of a couple of trees that were no longer in healthy condition. We would also like to thank MTScapes for their work in delivering the mulch and again Karen and a few volunteers for spreading it. We know all our four-legged friends and their humans will enjoy visiting the Pooch Patch. Please stay tuned for more improvements in the future. If you are interested in becoming a “Friend of the Pooch Patch” to add your assistance to these ongoing projects, please contact Karen Geganto for details. On April 11th Michelle Fronheiser hosted a lively back yard training demonstration at her home on Great Pine. Approximately 12 members attended this session and were well pleased with the results. April was our last Canine Club meeting due to the hot temperatures. We will be on hiatus and not holding monthly meetings until the fall. Please watch the Daily Updates for more Bark Beat News. As always, any resident is welcome to attend monthly meetings or help at the Pooch Patch.

Community Travel Club Keeps On Planning! By Mary Hensien Your Community Travel Club Board has been hard at work planning future trips for Cresswind’s largest club with 629 members. Come join us! No skills needed- other than to relax and enjoy outstanding adventures as you get to know your Cresswind neighbors. Don’t miss our July 11th meeting (moved back one week due to our July 4th Independence Day Holiday). As usual, the meeting will begin at 4:00 in the ballroom. Vickie McFalls from Daniels Travel will be presenting our December holiday trip, designed exclusively for our Community Travel Club. You will not want to miss out on this one! Consider joining us on July 27th as we travel by “coach” to the Cumming School Street Playhouse for dinner at Tam’s Backstage Restaurant and afterwards to enjoy the musical South Pacific . This will be our 3rd trip to this venue. Feedback from club members who attend the first two trips was fantastic. So many movies have been made in the Atlanta area, both recently and in days gone by. On Tuesday, August 13th, club members will have an opportunity to enjoy what has been awarded the “Best of Atlanta Bus Tours.” The Atlanta Movie Tour Company’s buses will be picking us up at Cresswind, and we will spend a fun filled day learning about the many movies made in this area. Anyone who loves baseball will want to jump in on this opportunity! A day at Suntrust Park and you do not have to fight the traffic, worry about parking, or staying up too late. This will be an exciting game between two arch rivals - The Atlanta Braves and The Philadelphia Phillies! On Thursday, September 19th, we will leave Cresswind at 9:00am, game time is at 12:10. The cost for transportation and your ticket is only $72 per person. Beware- we may have to charge more if you are a Phillie fan (only kidding). We are taking two buses and the first bus is already full, so act fast!

The fish thought we had two springs and cooperated with two “spring bites.” Nothing beats top water action on Lake Lanier unless it is a bunch of cooperative big hungry stripers. This year we are getting both. Now is the time to wet a line and experience the fun that is Lake Lanier fishing.

Cooking Continues to Serve Great Food & Drink! By: David Jones

The Cooking Club members thoroughly enjoyed the Cinco de Mayo event which was led by Sue Garcia. Tacos, fajitas, beans and rice, Tres Leches, margaritas and Kahlua made up the menu. During Memorial Day Weekend, the Taste of Lake Lanier Fish Fry event provided plenty of delicious baked Stripper and Spotted Bass along with deep fried Crappie, coleslaw, hush puppies, potato salad, ground beef calico baked beans, several desserts along with beer and Jägermeister. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment provided by Adam Komesar. Taste of Lake Lanier was led by Paula King and Tom and Lisa Brown. All fishermen’s effort is appreciated. Cooking Club members had a unique social hour in the community garden prior to assembling in the ballroom for the Garden to Table event. White wine sangria, vodka punch and hors d’oeuvres were offered in the garden. Members moved to the Ballroom for a variety of dinner salads. This event was a collaboration led by Lisa Giblin from the Cooking Club and David Rusk of the Garden Club.

The annual Poker Run is scheduled for Wednesday, August 14th. Event leader, Charlie Stotler, expresses that this event gives even a non-poker player an opportunity to enjoy drawing a great hand to compete with other participants. Attendees will enjoy hamburgers, coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, an ice cream bar and plenty of beer. A Charitable Dinner Dance is scheduled for Friday, August 30th with John Prentice being the event leader. A fantastic band is scheduled to provide an entire evening of great tunes. All proceeds will be donated to Gainesville Exploration Academy on McEver Rd. This school is one of many Title 1 Schools in the area. Our donation will make a DIFFERENCE. Mark your calendar and plan to attend our semi-annual Cooking Club meeting on Thursday, July 18th at 4:00 pm in the Ballroom.

Cresswind Investment Club

Miniature Golf Group

By Janet Nelson

By: David Jones

Our club has lively discussions while we determine what stocks to purchase. We meet monthly on Monday afternoons at 2:45pm and usually one of the members reports on a stock for a potential purchase. At least twice a year, we sponsor an educational presentation for the community, so save the mornings of October 1st for “How to Choose a Financial Planner” and October 17th for updates on market activity and tax implications in 2019. Of course, at Cresswind, we never fail to include a couple of parties! For additional information on joining this club, please contact Pete Bertasi at nascarn986a@ gmail.com or Janet Nelson at jnotesto87@gmail.com.

We have enjoyed great turnouts this spring and are looking forward to meeting new residents and playing with our veterans. Our second Wednesday of the month outings are scheduled July 10th and August 14th. Appreciation goes out to Ralph Bagwell and John Whalen for their assistance last month. Come out and meet your neighbors, while having fun at the Oaks Miniature Golf facility, 3709 Whiting Road.

The Quilting Club By Evelyne Palmer In our last issue of The Waterfall, we shared our story of the Quilting Club making a donation quilt for the Elachee Nature Science Center Benefit and Auction. This “Bug Jar” Quilt was designed and completed by Marsha Low and Eleanor Whalen, with a little assistance from the rest of the group. We are very pleased to share the winner of the Silent Auction was one of our own Cresswind residents, Joanie (and Zach ) Taylor. Their contribution benefited the Nature Science Center and the quilt stays in the community! Thank you to Joanie and Zach. We have delivered 23 quilts to Legacy Link for Seniors in need in the Hall County and surrounding areas so far this year and are busily working on more along with the Quilts for Kids projects. The Quilting Group is busy stitching a large quilting project to be featured at the Holiday Market this year in October. Each year, the Group completes a project for the Holiday Market and the proceeds allow us to purchase supplies needed to continue our donation work. We have made some beautiful quilts and this year you will not be disappointed! Our members are not only talented, but committed to their work and this has been a fun group project. We welcome any resident to stop by and share their favorite quilt or quilting project with us. Contact either Evelyne or Bonnie to make arrangements. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft room. All levels of Quilters, from beginner to experienced, are invited. Stop by, meet us and see the work we do. If you have an interest in sewing and want to join us, we welcome all new prospective members! We do many quilting related projects, big and small, work at individual levels, and have fun! Contact either Evelyne Palmer, hybiscus5@outlook.com or Bonnie May at Quilt.lady2@charter.net. The Club is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the job Fockele Garden Company did with our yard. Their plan met our goals to soften the view with colorful plants and attract birds and butterflies. The sound and sparkle of the fountain especially attracts wildlife. Not only do we enjoy hearing the babbling brook from inside, but I find myself drawn to sitting outside to listen and watch. It’s very calming. Thanks for creating a wonderful retreat for us and a haven for wildlife. —Linda and Gordon Potter

RV Club By Karen Silverthorn

Townsend/Cades Cove, TN; November 15 – 22, 2020 Orange Beach, AL.

Cresswind’s R.V. Club continues to roll! A group of six rigs stayed for a week in May in the north Georgia mountains near Lake Chatuge. In Hiawassee, we hiked the 33 acre Fred Hamilton woodland botanical gardens. From the top of Bald Mountain, we toured the museum and took in the view overlooking four states. The group enjoyed campfires, a nightly Happy Hour and even a ukulele and piano concert around the fire!

Do you have an R.V.? Let us know if you are interested in joining the RV Club. Please email: cll.rvclub@gmail.com. The Steering Committee welcomes comments and trip suggestions! Karen Silverthorn & Brenda Crosby – Co-Leaders

All members - remember the R.V. Club Social event on July 15th at 5:30 pm at the clubhouse. Check your email for details. Trips are organized so members can stay only a few days or the whole week. There are still trips organized for this year. The R.V. Club will be camping in Dillard, GA October 13th through the 20th, 2019 as well as at the annual Sandcastle and Sidewalk Chalk Festivals near Sarasota, FL November 14th through the 21st, 2019. Check the R.V. Singles Soaking Up Summer Adventures By Susan Lahey The ever-growing Social Singles group continues to welcome new members! If you are single and new to Cresswind, or recently widowed or divorced, please join us for a variety of entertaining activities. A favorite activity in the summertime is the weekly “Boating with Bob” adventure. Captain Bob, a genial host and active club member, has a luxurious new pontoon boat and delights in gliding with twelve guests around Lake Lanier-with the eventual goal being a stop for lunch or dinner at one of the marina restaurants nearby. A popular new event is SNL; members meet in the clubhouse on Saturday nights to go out on the town for an evening of dining and fellowship. Coming up in July will be a “field trip” to the Ty Cobb gravesite and museum in Royston, followed by lunch at a former hardware store. There is much more in store for the summer. This is a vibrant group which is always looking for new ways to have fun together. Bring us your ideas and help us enjoy Lake Life together. We have a link on the Cresswind website if you would like more information.

Pickleball News…

By Jan Cieply & Rosemarie Bower

The Spring Pickleball Season has been quite busy with many varied activities from League Play to Training to Tournaments. Our Spring League with both a Morning and an Evening League was well attended. The Season’s end was celebrated with a Yummy Potluck Supper (we sure have some great chefs here) and the medals being presented to the winners. We have welcomed many new players who participated in the Novice Training held on Thursdays at 3pm lead by Brenda Young and Susie Holbrook. Their students are now making them proud on the courts. Novice Training will resume in the fall with the date to be announced. Please know that if you are new and would like to learn this addictive game of Pickleball, feel free to contact a Board Member. On May 30th, Chris Dear of Northeast Georgia Physicians Group and six Athletic Trainers provided 45 Pickleball Players with Cardio and Stretching exercises intended to prepare our bodies for safe game play. Modification of those exercises was the order of the day……” we think we can, we think we can.” Monday Night Mixed Up Doubles is very popular. Players are matched up with random partners each week and play 3 to 7 games depending on the format. The prize for the evening is fun and camaraderie. The 3rd Annual Reed Tournament was held June 1st on a beautiful Saturday morning. We had over 100 players. Many thanks go to the Reed Family who made this possible and to Amy Pike for taking the lead and organizing this great event. Winners are posted on our Cresswind Website.

Lots of smiles! Fun day for all! Thank you, Pickleball Players

Please consider running. We Need You! If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Rosemarie Bower (secretary for the Pickleball Club) or any other Board members. Our next tournament is scheduled for September 7th and will be sponsored by Northeast Georgia Medical Centers. Preparations have begun for this event. Mark your calendars and stay tuned!

In the intermediate class on Thursdays at 2 to 3 pm and in the cardio (advanced) class on Sundays and Mondays from 6:30-8 pm, you can have fun, learn new dances, and get a real workout, all at the same time. Writers in the Wind By Laurie Homa

Gina Edwards, writer, editor, and writing workshop specialist was the guest speaker at our May meeting. Gina’s presentation, “The Triad Necessary for a Story” was most informative. The workshop gave us new incentive to challenge ourselves going forward with the use of conflict, pacing, and tension when we write. It is important to understand what keeps the reader interested when creating a short story or a book. We look forward to using these techniques as we move forward. Remember to check out some of the group’s newest works in the Cresswind Library. Your comments are appreciated. Writers in the Wind welcomes anyone interested in creative writing. We meet the last Thursday of every month in the Kitchen from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Join us and improve your skills. Contact Laurie Homa for more information.

Slot Car Racing Is Back By Ron Parker

The 2019 Cresswind Slot Car racing season ended on April 24th with the final races, an awards ceremony, and a Winners’ Circle party. Twelve drivers competed over a 16-week schedule in both a 2-man team event and an individual driver format. Races were held on two different layouts with Farris McElreath winning the Individual Championship race against Ken Frates by just a few seconds. The 2020 season will see an expansion of the league to 24 drivers with pre-season practices starting in October and the actual competitive races beginning in January 2020. Cresswind residents wanting to test their mettle on the track next season or simply participate as track marshals should contact Ron Parker at scwidq@gmail.com.

Tennis By: Sandy Barmak All of our competitive teams, Silverball, Men’s ALTA and Women’s USTA had a great season. Special congratulations are due to our two championship teams. The Men’s ALTA B5 Team won the City Championships, captained by Bill Papciak and Jim Snell. Our Women’s USTA 3.0 55+ team, captained by Lee Jackson, won their division and were eligible for States. Unfortunately, due to everyone’s busy schedules, not enough players were available to compete. As of this writing, the Women’s USTA 65+ team is playing through the heat and leading their division. Well done tennis pros! Spring found Bill Papciak and his team of instructors providing clinics to engage new players and help all of us improve our skills. We had some rain during the first two clinics and lots of heat for the last two, but all were productive, full of action, and fun. It was great to see several new players come out to play. Thank you Gene Evans, Mike Marsico, Jim Snell, Harry Takemura, and Gordon Watts for your time

and effort. Additional clinics will be held in July; so watch the Daily Update for information on dates and times. Several tennis players participated in the Injury Prevention and Movement Technique Clinic in June, organized by the Pickleball club. Thank you Amy Pike and Wendy Tomme for organizing this clinic and including us. Once again Mother Nature was not on our side and our planned Round Robin Social was rained out. We hope for better luck for our next one planned for Saturday, November 16th. Check the tennis courts’ bulletin board for open play times. We welcome anyone who has previously played tennis and feel they might be a bit rusty to come out and join us and refresh your tennis skills. For more information about tennis contact either president, Jim Seifert at seifertj@bellsouth.net or secretary, Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com.

but the April 15 deadline for IRA contributions isn’t.

Shalom Club By Harriet Gershkowitz

You have only so many years to prepare for retirement. That’s why contributing to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is so important. Fortunately, you still have time to maximize your 2015 IRA contribution before the April 15 deadline.

The Shalom Club sponsored a Brunch on Sunday, June 9th to celebrate the holiday of Shavout. Shavout celebrates the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people by God.

By contributing now, your retirement savings can have more opportunity to grow. Even if you already have an IRA elsewhere, it’s easy to transfer it to an Edward Jones IRA and begin receiving the face-to-face guidance you deserve.

We also enjoyed a talk by Paul Weiss who is a learned scholar who shared insights and thoughts with us about the Holiday. Also, to celebrate with us, Stan Applebaum spoke to us providing insights into the

Spring Stage Production Keeps Us Laughing

By Wayne Blum

The recent theater group offering of “You Can’t Take It With You” was a huge success. We had over 500 residents and guests attend the performances. The director, Joe Tellus and his assistant director, Laurie Homa worked with a cast of 17 actors and actresses. Cresswind is fortunate to have so many talented individuals that work together to put on these professional grade productions. The audience enjoyed this Pulitzer Prize winning comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The Cresswind Theater group would like to announce our fall production “Deadwood Dick” by Tom Taggart. Cresswind resident Rich St George will direct this comedy. The play is set in the old west and promises to be a lot of fun! These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, sound and lighting, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. In fact, it took well over 100 volunteers for our last play, “Present Laughter!” If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.”
