LIFESTYLE AT A GLANCE
Fall is in the air, and it is time to get outside for some fun. The cooler evenings will be just perfect for the four outdoor concerts that are coming in September and October. I am calling September “Deantember” at Cresswind because we have two great nights of entertainment by a Cresswind favorite Dean Z. Then October begins with a party on the patio, has a Holiday Fair, and ends with another great concert on the event lawn.

He will delight you with his “Shake, Rattle, and Rock” show that showcases music greats such as Michael Jackson, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Elvis and more.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15: DEAN Z’S “ONE NIGHT WITH YOU, ELVIS” SHOW
Dean Z presents his “One Night with You, Elvis” performance doing Elvis as only he can which always is a hit here at Cresswind. Due to the fact we have two big concerts planned the second weekend of the month, we will save our energy, partying, and dancing for those nights and not have a First Friday Dance Party this month. It might be a nice opportunity to Mix and Mingle at TGIF in the Crow’s Nest that night.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4: CHRIS HAMPTON BAND, 7PM
The Chris Hampton Band starts off the month with a First Friday on the patio. Enjoy listening and dancing in the warm fall night to this veteran band from Athens.

Kitti’s Corner
Kitti’s Corner Is she Kitti? Cathi? Or Catherine Kleinedler? Actually I go by all of these. When I was in 6th grade, I moved to a new school a couple weeks after classes had begun. When I was introduced as Cathi, there was a collective moan – “Not another Cathy.” I was Cathy number 6 in a class of about 30 kids. So, by the next day I had been given the nickname Kitti, and it has followed me around since then. Why end the name with the letter “i”? My mother did not want my name to have any letters hanging below the line when it was written. I thought it was a Southern thing – my dad blamed all of her idiosyncrasies on her Southern upbringing – but I guess it was just my mom’s thing. So you will probably see things from Kitti or Catherine Kleinedler in the course of business at Cresswind. As I write this, I have exactly 48 hours as the new general manager under my belt. Of course as you read it, a month will have passed, and I hope with it all the nerves and apprehensions I have. I cannot thank the residents enough for the support and well wishes that I have received. Those will definitely come in handy as I face the challenges that no doubt lie ahead. This career was never my plan. I retired from a very satisfying career in education and counseling. I moved to Georgia to escape the harsh winters of Michigan and to embrace the warm hugs of two of my grandchildren in Braselton. The first couple of years here were spent babysitting, with family, and learning my way around my new home. But in no time the grandkids were in school, and I turned to volunteering. I volunteered at the hospital, worked on the BULLI committee in Braselton, and volunteered at an elementary school as a literacy coach. Just by chance, I heard of a job opening on the weekends at the front desk at Cresswind at Lake Lanier. I was 15 minutes late for my interview because I turned the wrong way on Brown’s Bridge! Gainesville seemed so far from my little corner of the world. That was three years ago. I gradually added a day here and there until I was consistently working Monday – Thursday. A four day work week is really nice, I must admit. I went on and got my CAM license last summer and have recently completed another class for advanced certification. To say I love being at Cresswind is an understatement. I feel good every time I walk through those front doors in the quiet of the morning. I tell my friends who are incredulous about why I am working that the positive energy at Cresswind just feeds my being. I used to be one of the first faces you would see as you enter the clubhouse. Now you will find me out and around the clubhouse or in the HOA office on the third floor. My door will be open. Please stop by and say hi, or just share a smile. Because y’all are why I am here.

Committee Corner
Architectural Review Committee What does it mean that I need to have my project inspected by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC)? I notified someone that my project is complete; why did no one call me about an inspection? As you likely know, homeowners must apply to the ARC to make any changes to the exterior of their house or to add outdoor items such as fireplaces, patio extensions or coverings, room additions, and lawn décor. When you receive your approval letter, it contains a line about notifying the front desk staff when your project is complete, so that an inspection can take place. If you remember who the ARC committee member was who talked with you about the project, you may notify him or her instead. We inspect your project to make sure that you did what you said you were going to do. It is perfectly OK to decide not to do the project – please just let us know. We wait for notification that the project is complete, or sometimes we use the estimated completion date you provided and go by to see if the project is under way or perhaps has been completed. You will not always get a call from us, because we can inspect some items, such as storm doors, just by walking or driving by your house. There is no need to take any of your time. If we can see a fence just by taking a few steps into a side yard, we will do that too
By Landy Johnson, ARC Chair without bothering you. If there is a need to venture into your back yard, we will give you a call to make an appointment. But many back yards are visible from a side street. If your project was one that required a deposit (such as for pouring concrete or having a dumpster), an inspection is needed in order for the front desk staff to release the deposit back to you. They will contact you to come down and pick up your check once the ARC Chair notifies them that the inspection was completed. Completed projects that required a deposit will usually be inspected within a few days of notification that they are complete. Other projects might not be inspected for several weeks, depending on our workload. Once projects pass inspection, the cases are closed and moved off of our spreadsheet. If the front desk staff notifies the ARC Chair that a project is complete, it is marked as completed (rather than approved) on the spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is distributed to ARC members monthly, so that they can see if there are completed projects that they need to inspect. It is never a bother to explain to you the status of your application, or when you might expect a deposit to be returned. Please do not hesitate to call me or e-mail me (landyjoh@gmail.com) for that information. Keeping this process going smoothly is in the best interest of the ARC and all our residents.

Education Committee By Doug Geganto
The Education Committee has strived to bring a variety of informative, interesting and educational programs to our residents this year. To date 1538 residents have attended the 45 programs we have presented so far in 2019. Twenty-five percent of our programs this year have been suggested by residents and we have worked hard to find speakers to fulfill your suggestions. We have many more interesting programs scheduled through the end of the year all of which can be found on the Education Committee website https://sites.google.com/site/cwlleducation/home just navigate to the calendar of events link on the left side of the page and you will be able to see our calendar of events along with a brief description of the program when you click on the event. Welcome Health & Fitness Committee News Committee By Denise Skeels
Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of twelve members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held a Newcomer Orientation in the Ballroom in August 2019 for those new residents closing on houses‌ new and resales. Approximately 43 residents attended this presentation by MTScapes, First Service, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. The next New Resident Orientation will be in November 2019. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at skeelsdenise@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents! Welcome to Cresswind!
By Laurie Solomon On August 16th, the Health & Fitness Committee in conjunction with Northside Hospital listened to Dr. Fischer, an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in musculoskeletal disorders of the upper and lower extremities, speak about shoulder health. A large percentage of people over 60, even without shoulder pain can have rotator cuff tears. Doing rotator cuff exercises can be very beneficial. We had the maximum of 100 residents in attendance, who received professional information as well as had their questions answered. We are looking forward to many future seminars presented by Northside Hospital. The most popular of our new SciFit equipment is the Lateral Stability Trainer. Its circular motion activates muscles used for stability [think falls] and side-to-side movements. Because of the bi-directional motion, it activates different muscle firing patterns, depending on the direction you choose to use. All this is accomplished while in a sitting position!
We encourage everyone to use the gym facility. Before doing so, we request that you familiarize yourself with the safety rules for working out. These rules are posted in the gym and can be accessed on the Cresswind Website. Please be diligent about wiping down the equipment after use, as well as returning all weights, attachments, and equipment to the proper location. This is extending courtesy to other residents utilizing the equipment. We would like to thank Charles (Chuck) Wharton for his expertise and willingness to build our body bar rack, as well as racks for both the medicine balls and kettlebells. His work is impeccable. We decided to move our well-attended, popular Fitness Fair to January 18th, 2020 from 10am to 1pm. This is usually the time of year when people seem to focus more on their health and try to start the New Year off in a positive way. Please mark your calendars for this informative event. We all need to be grateful to our residents Ava Lewis and JP Charette for keeping the Health and Fitness Program at Cresswind and the gym running the way it does. They spend many hours working to keep this a quality facility.

Garden Committee
By Sarah Galshack
Greetings from The Common Ground! Have you noticed how “bountiful” the garden looks? It seems like all the flowers, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, etc. peak in the warmth of August. Amazing what our gardeners produce in a 4ft by 8ft box. Lots of exciting things are planned for the garden as we look forward to fall. Save the date of October 20th, as the Garden Committee along with the Cresswind Community Fund will sponsor Harvest Scarecrow Garden Fest. There will be refreshments, music and, of course, everyone’s favorite, the Scarecrow contest. This is a fun event that all Cresswind residents are invited to participate in. More details will be coming. At our monthly September meeting the Garden Committee will host Josh Presley our former Hall County Extension agent. He will be speaking to us on how and what vegetables to grow in the fall and winter. Our October meeting will feature our resident Orchid guru, Bob Rivers who will help us learn the ins and outs of Growing Orchids. Be sure and read your Daily Updates for more information on these upcoming events and remember, all Cresswind residents are invited to take a stroll through the garden. And when you do, be sure to notice the new sign that designates the garden as a Monarch Waystation. Thanks to Lance Haney and the butterfly weed battalion for making that happen. This Garden is truly a wonderful part of our neighborhood!

Resident News
A Day in the Life of a Front Desk Employee You have heard that old saying “it takes a village. At Cresswind, our ladies at the Front Desk take care of the village of Cresswind, that is. Many of you have asked what do these ladies do all day? Well, put your feet up and sit a spell while we take you through a routine day here at Cresswind. Did you know that the Front Desk clerks have many databases to maintain? They record golf cart registrations, pets and their vaccinations, guest waivers, day dock usage, fitness center classes, MTScapes maintenance requests, Daily Updates, room reservations, and the daily calendar. Wow, that is a lot to keep up with. Without these databases, it would be almost impossible to keep track of the information and requests of our approximately 1600 residents. Need your website password reset, a few copies made, or a document notarized? Come to the front desk. The Cresswind website is maintained regularly by these Front Desk ladies. Lifestyle events, directory listings, meeting minutes, and club rosters need constant updates. If it is on the website, someone from the front desk put it there. Maybe you want another gate card/ transponder or yours quit working. Programming, and selling gate and club cards are done at the desk. So is setting the times for the gates and doors to open and close. If the ladies are not at the desk, they may be in the back room doing clerical tasks such as assembling closing folders for new residents, ordering supplies, making copies of directories or forms, or scanning information into the system. They recently completed the monumental task of scanning 8 file cabinet drawers full of resident information into the Connect database. Sprinkle in their day dozens of phone calls from inquiring minds and people coming to the desk with requests for keys, technical assistance, suggestions for improvement, and so much more, and these ladies keep busy. The tv monitor broadcast and threemonth event calendar are created at the front desk. Those informational room cards by each door are made daily and put out during the building walk around when they assess the general condition of the clubhouse. They also provide support for Gary, Kitti, and Roland in many different ways – send out a blast, make a sign, find a report- are just a few of the tasks they are asked to do. A day in the life at the front desk is never the same. The responsibilities do not change, but one never knows what the day will bring. However, these ladies always bring a smile with them to the front desk and to those who enter the clubhouse. A returned smile or hello and a flash of your name tag will brighten their day also.

What’s Happening Bible Study Club By Dave Ditmeier
The Bible Study Clubs in Cresswind are alive and active! The Women’s Bible Study began a study “Biblical Signs” about the first coming of Jesus and His return. The Friday morning Men’s Bible Study continued to unpack the Book of Acts and the evening Men’s Bible Study continued with a study of the Gospel of Mark. Several Couples Bible Studies continue to
meet in private homes in the community and The Way began a six-week study. All of these various groups are open to all residents regardless of the levels of Bible knowledge as we read, teach, share, and learn. Plus, we have no dues! The Bible Study Club also continued its monthly Nondenominational Services with guest pastors from the First United Methodist Church and St. Michael Catholic Church, both in Gainesville.

Adventures in Dining By Karen Silverthorn Our Cresswind dinner group begins our eighth season on October 5th with a delicious autumn themed meal. Members will receive an evite invitation for this event in early September. Note the dates and themes for this season’s Adventures in Dining dinners: Nov. 2, 2019 – Southern Living Prize winning recipes; Feb. 1, 2020 – President Day theme with pork; Mar. 7, 2020 – French Spring Flavors with Cornish hens. Our dinner group caught the eye of an editor of a publication called “Atlanta Senior Life”. The concept of our Adventures in Dining in Cresswind will be part of an article on lake living in their October issue. Anyone can join at any time during the year, but annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. If you are interested in joining, email directly the coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the email list. For each meal, all recipes are provided and courses assigned to those attending. There are always a total of 4 couples/pairs of people at each host home. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses on the same evening, each using the same recipes and making the same courses. Food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Course leads are assigned to help answer ingredient and cooking questions. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!
“
I can’t say enough wonderful things about the job Fockele Garden Company did with our yard. Their plan met our goals to soften the view with colorful plants and attract birds and butterflies. The sound and sparkle of the fountain especially attracts wildlife. Not only do we enjoy hearing the babbling brook from inside, but I find myself drawn to sitting outside to listen and watch. Community Chorus’ 6th Year By Chuck Bridwell From its humble beginning in 2014 to its 2019 Spring Music Spectacular with 125 singers, the Cresswind Community Chorus, under the direction of Chuck Bridwell, celebrates its 5-year history and looks forward to beginning its 6th year with a Kickoff Party on Sunday afternoon, September 8th at 3:00pm in the Ballroom. The chorus welcomes new members with no audition required and no reservation needed. The chorus will rehearse every Monday afternoon at 3:00pm beginning on September 9th. They will be preparing music for their Holiday Music Celebration with four performances,
December 5th through December 8th at 7:00pm each night. Special guest artist will be Michelle Winters, high energy violinist from Atlanta who will play holiday music in many musical styles. The cost to be a member of the chorus is only $20 for the entire season, September-May. Members will be provided a folder, demo CDs, and tons of great music to learn and present to the Cresswind community in its holiday and spring presentations. For more information contact Chuck at cbridwell43@gmail. com and the Chorus website: https://www.cresswindpa.com/ chorus
The Wild West Comes to Cresswind! By Wayne Blum The fall Neighborhood Theatre Production of “Deadwood Dick or The Game of Gold” by Tom Taggart promises to be a very different offering! It will be like no other play that we have presented. The play will include at least 19 characters. It is a comedic farce set in the Wild West. There will be good guys, bad guys, fair maidens, and not so fair maidens! But in the end the good guy always wins…or does he? Rich St. George will be making his Cresswind directorial debut. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with him. The performances are November 14th through November 17th. Exact times to be determined so please save those dates. It promises to be a great evening of entertainment. These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, sound and lighting, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. In fact, it took well over 100 volunteers for our last play, “You Can’t Take It With You”! If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting, there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.”

Cooking Club Update
By David Jones
Mother Nature held off the expected rain showers on August 3rd and club members enjoyed the annual Poker Run. The Cresswind Surf Aces provided great music throughout the evening. Event leader, Charlie Stotler was assisted by Paula King in organizing a delicious meal consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, ice cream bars, and drum sticks. Attendees had the opportunity to taste many of the craft beers that individuals brought to participate in the event. Congratulations to Phyliss Dixon, Frank Sequeira, and Mary Ann Amick as winners for the poker hands. The Oldies Charity Dance was a big hit bringing back many memories with 50’s and 60’s music. Our own, Rob Plawecki, Retro Robbie and his Vintage Vinyl kept us singing, dancing, and eating pizza all evening. All of the proceeds were donated to Gainesville Exploration Academy on McEver Road. John Prentice was the event leader and Heidi Anderson assisted him presenting this event. Proceeds will help the students that attend this Title 1 School within our area. The next event will be Not Your Momma’s Grilled Cheese scheduled September 28th. This event is led by Judy Brannan and she has some great surprises. When you purchase your wristband, a menu of the sandwiches will be provided to you, for your order. This will give us an opportunity to estimate how much of each ingredient we need to purchase for the event. In the past, it was a gamble which sandwich that participants would choose when they attended the event. This will assist us in having plenty of ingredients for each sandwich. This is a BYOB event and water will be provided. This is a fantastic and fun event to volunteer to get to know your neighbors. On October 12th, the club brings back the Annual Cresswind Oktoberfest. A short skit will be presented in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The initial Oktoberfest festivity was their marriage celebration in 1810. Custom Nuremberg bratwursts, German potato salad, sauerkraut, soft pretzel and apple streusel cake are being served with Oktoberfest beer and Jägermeister available. This event, led by David Jones, will remain indoors this year because of the success of having such a true German beer hall atmosphere in our ballroom. Prost! Do not hesitate purchasing wristbands as soon as they go on sale because these events are indoors and we have limited seating. Our Cresswind village makes our Cooking Club. Thanks for all of your support and volunteering.

International Missions Club By Tom Flaim
Genealogy Club By Dave Dittmeier
Come visit with the International Missions Club and join your neighbors discussing the varied types of global missions and the great work they do. We are excited to be conducting our first Mission/Excursion trip to the Dominican Republic the first week of November. We will be staying at a nice local resort with excellent food and facilities and then traveling during the day into the local mission field to engage and love the local people. This will be a terrific opportunity to safely experience the impact of international missions and have a great time with your neighbors. In coming meetings, we will also be preparing WaSH bottles to hand out to the children of the villages we will be visiting. These are bottles filled with essential toiletries and hygiene products, as well as coloring books and candies. Importantly, we will be visiting the water plants built by Water@ Work, and you will experience the difference clean water makes in personal health, family, and community development. We generally meet in the Kitchen after the Interdenominational Service at 4:00pm on those Sundays. Please contact Tom Flaim at CresswindIMC@gmail. com with any questions.
The Genealogy Club continues to expand and share research tools. Past months’ meeting topics have included: Getting the Most Out of the 1940 Census; Verifying Online Genealogy Sources; Protecting Your Research for Future Generations; Cursive Writing for the Genealogist; Golden Rules of Genealogy; Probate Records; and Useful Facebook Sites for Research. The Genealogy Club is open to all residents regardless of their level of research and expertise. We volunteer to help each other.

Tennis Club By Sandy Barmak It was a hot and humid summer, but we endured and kept active on the tennis courts. We are all relieved that fall weather is around the corner. We are proud of our Ladies competitive teams. Our USTA/NEGTA 65+ 3.0 team, captained by Shirley Osterloh, won their division and are invited to States in Savannah in October. As of this date, we are unsure if we have enough players available on the dates to compete. Cresswind residents are just too busy traveling. We are lucky to have lots of women willing to play competitive tennis and this fall we will have two USTA 55+ teams and two USTA 65+ teams. If you are interested in joining the fun and comradery, contact Lee Jackson at lee.jackson2@comcast.net for the 55+ teams and Shirley Osterloh at shirleyosterloh@bellsouth.net for the 65+ teams. This fall there will be three competitive men’s teams. Dan Skeels, dan.skeels@hotmail.com will once again captain the men’s Silverball team that plays against local communities. Play begins Monday, September 9th through mid-November. We will also have two ALTA men’s senior teams that play on Wednesday mornings beginning September 4th. If you are interested in playing on a team contact Bill Papciak, billpapciak@gmail.com, Mike Marsico, mmarsico02@gmail.com or Rick Osterloh, fosterloh@bellsouth.net. Our Round Robin spring socials were all rained out, so we decided to just get together for food and friendship on August 14th. Sandy Barmak hosted the afternoon as we all enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, sweets, wine, drinks, and conversation. Save the date for our Round Robin Social on Saturday, November 16th. Thanks to the efforts of Bill Papciak and his team of skilled tennis instructors, we have had 33 clinics since the fall of 2016. The clinics give lapsed players a chance to renew their skills and current players an opportunity to sharpen their game. We are pleased with the positive feedback on the clinics. Watch the Daily Update for information about our September clinics. For more information about tennis contact our President, Mary Hensien, hensienm@bellsouth.net.
Writers in the Wind: Cresswind Creative Writing Group By Laurie Homa
The Creative Writers group has several new members and we welcome more. Every writer contributes to the group as we continue to improve our skills and polish our written work. Assisting and supporting each other as we grow as writers is so important to attaining success. There is a new writing assignment offered every month that challenges each of us to be creative. In addition to our assignments, many in our group are working on books they hope to publish, family biographies, and collections of poetry. Our October meeting will feature guest author, Michelle Fronheiser. Michelle will present a workshop entitled “Show don’t Tell.” She will explore ways for writers to show the reader their story rather than tell it. If you are interested in improving your writing skills, please join us. We meet the last Thursday of every month from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the Kitchen. For questions or more information, please contact Laurie Homa at m2old4this@aol.com. Page 32 | The Waterfall | September/October

Model Railroad Club By Bill Edmondson
Investing News By Peter Bertasi
Our club members have been hard at work preparing for upcoming meetings and clinics to teach and learn many aspects of our hobby. We had prepared to set up our modular layout for viewing during Kids Kamp in July, but that event was cancelled. Our next club meeting was on August 14th and the clinic that day focused on how to make scale signage using your computer and PowerPoint programs. On October 9th, we will have another club meeting with how-to clinics on a number of topics chosen by member preferences. And on December 13th and 14th, we will set up our modular layout in the Lanier Room for the “Breakfast with Santa” weekend, allowing our many residents and their kids and grandkids to come view our trains running and learn more about our hobby and club.
The Investment Club is having an excellent year! Membership has increased to 30 Partners, the club has expanded its community wide presentations, and investments are doing very well. The motto of the club is Knowledge, Profit, and Fun. Meetings are lively with discussions on current holdings, possible future additions, and potential market trends. This fall the club is sponsoring, along with the Education Committee, a speaker from UGA on “How to Select A Financial Advisor” on October 1st, as well as a local advisory company that will discuss the current economy on October 17th. All are welcome to these free events.
Also, our club President (Brian Chapin) is hosting an open house of his N scale layout on October 26th which is free. All are welcome to stop by between 1pm and 5 pm.
Anyone who is interested is welcome to visit our club which meets the first business Monday of each month (excluding holidays) at 2:45 pm in the Crow’s Nest. If you would like to visit, please contact Peter Bertasi at nascarn986a@gmail.com or Janet Nelson at jnotesto87@gmail.com. We look forward to meeting you!
Our club is open to anyone with interests in model railroading...just contact any member or our officers Brian Chapin (brianchapin@charter.net) or Bill Edmondson (wke2003@bellsouth.net).

Pickleball News
By Rosemarie Bower
Summertime and the livin’ is easy…. Wait a minute! Have you seen those people out there on the pickleball courts early morning or late evening? That’s right, we are an active community even with the hot and humid weather. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate… (now I’m talking about water). However, there is a group that has some different types of libations after their games! Who says we don’t have fun? Monday night mixed doubles ended July 22nd, but we are sure that you will find some of our folks continue with the mixed doubles night. Way to go! Our General Pickleball Meeting was held on July 19th. At that time, we had nominations from the floor for people who will be willing to serve on our 2020 board. More information to come regarding our end of the year meeting and selecting board members in November. The evening was capped off with a fantastic potluck, great fellowship and some even enjoyed the pool. We have a group of people working very hard in getting all the preparations for our upcoming Northeast Georgia Health System tournament in place. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 7th. We have 100 people who have signed up to play. So, make sure to come out and enjoy this fun and exciting tournament. Another date to add to your calendar is Saturday, October 19th. This will be our Hunger Games Tournament. More details as we get closer to this date. As we continue to enjoy our summer weather remember to be kind to one another, take a breath, enjoy your day and continue to come on down to the courts! If you are new to the game, want to find out what pickleball is or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact our board. www.cresswindpickleball.com for updates and information

What’s Happening
Your Community Travel Club, On The Go! By Laurie Homa Fall is coming and so are many exciting new trips for Travel Club members. Be sure to attend our monthly meetings the first Thursday of every month at 4:00 pm in the Ballroom. Be informed so you do not miss your chance to travel in style. September 19th. there are two buses ready to take us to Sun Trust Park. The Braves will be playing the Philadelphia Phillies in what could be a season ending make or break game. If you have not been to the new “Home of the Braves”, here is your chance to enjoy the many activities offered and explore the stadium. Do not forget to share your popcorn with friends. October 21st has club members traveling back to Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. This day trip is a favorite of gamblers, spa lovers and golfers. On Sunday, November 3rd, 2019, we will travel to the Holly Theater in Dahlonega where we will attend the production of the Musical Bright Star. The show was written and composed by Steve Martin and Eddie Brickell. It is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945-1946. The play was inspired by Martin’s and Brickell’s Grammy award winning collaboration of the Blue Grass album, “Love Has Come for You”, and in turn, the folk story of The Iron Mountain Baby. You won’t want to miss this trip. Our annual Holiday trip is scheduled for December. We will be leaving Cresswind on December 9th. Our destination is North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, hosted by Daniels Discovery Tours.
Alive and Well By Karen Smith
Alive and Well is a club formed by a group of residents who want to improve the quality of their lives for the quantity of their days. This year alone we have covered such topics as: Brain and Gut Health - The Connection, Good Fats-Bad Fats, Organic and Why, How to be Your Own Patient Advocate, and Integrative Medicine. Wow! What a year we have had! Going forward, Alive and Well is excited to announce a series of guest speakers from the Amen Clinic in Atlanta. Dr. Daniel Amen, author of such books as, Change Your Brain Change Your Life, started the Amen Clinics because he believes that brain health is central to all health and success. He is quoted as saying, “The fountain of youth is between your ears.” He also states that when your brain works right, you lead a happier more fulfilled life. His work is dedicated to helping people have much better brains and better lives.
You will be staying at the Beach Cove Resort in a deluxe beach front one-bedroom condo. Imagine yourself having a fabulous Tea and a light lunch at Ripley’s annual Trees and Teas event, where you can explore the Aquarium and admire all the festive trees. Feast on an all you can eat dinner of Calabash seafood. Relax and enjoy the Christmas shows at The Alabama Theater and The Carolina Opry featuring all your favorite music. Bring your eye patch maty for the Pirates Voyage Dinner show. The Legends Concert promises to have the best of the tribute entertainers. Wait, there is more! You will still have free time to shop and eat or just walk on the beach before you return on December 13th. Join your neighbors for a great fun filled experience. Your Travel Club Board is accepting nominees for new board members. If you or someone you know have great skills in the world of technology, love planning, initiating and hosting trips and are committed to serving on the CTC Board, we would love to hear from you. Please email Pam Papciak @ pamppck@aol.com or Mary Hensien @ hensienm@bellsouth.net by September 15, 2019. The nominees will be announced in October prior to voting in November. Thank you to all the members who answered the questionnaire regarding future CTC trips. Your Board is busy planning the 2020 schedule. *** Please visit our website for details and updates on all our trips*** After performing more than 100,000 SPECT brain scans, Dr. Amen has formulated effective “brain prescriptions” that can help heal your brain and change your life. Their integrative approach to medicine treats the entire person on an individual basis. Their mission is to spread the word and make as much information available to the surrounding community as possible. Here at Cresswind we are doing things right! Dr. Amen and his staff are big advocates for activities like ping pong, dance, yoga, Tai Chi, and card games. The clinic’s staff of physicians will share with us how and why these activities are important for a healthy brain as we age. Alive and Well is currently involved in discussions with the coordinator from the Amen Clinic in Atlanta. We are hoping to have our first speaker in October. Watch for announcements in the Daily Updates. This series will be open to all residents without cost. Please contact either Marsha Dickey at marsha@ marbill.com or Karen Smith at karensmith912@gmail.com with questions or a request for further information. September/October | The Waterfall | Page 39

Spanish Conversation Club
Ping Pong Club
We are a group of Cresswind residents interested in bettering our Spanishspeaking skills through camaraderie and good times. Varying levels of fluency are definitely evident. Anyone with interest, please feel free to join us. We welcome beginners if you have a desire to learn and converse in Spanish. We would love to have any native speakers or advanced learners help us to boost our skills. We have really benefited from our visits from Rafael Torres! During the year, our focus was on a study program called DESTINOS, which is a course cleverly disguised as a telenovela. It is a springboard for some fun conversation and speculation. For the summer, we decided to put the book aside for a bit to focus on games to fortify and review our skills. Hangman and Bingo have proven to be particularly popular. We have had some laughs reading and translating “The Three Little Pigs,” and “Three Billy Goats Gruff.” We also enjoyed Mexican cerveza, guava juice and Sangria. We sampled plenty of salsa and chips, platanos and galletas as well. DESTINOS will be back in the fall. The prevailing question is, “will Raquel get to the bottom of the mystery?
The Cresswind Ping Pong Club currently has over 100 members. We invite all Cresswind Residents whether you are new to Cresswind or just have not played in a while to come and try your hand at Ping Pong. There are players of all skill levels from Beginner/Novice to Advanced. We have scheduled Open Play times in the Lanier Room on Tuesdays from 3:00pm to 6:00pm and Thursdays from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. There are four tables located in the Lanier Room that are available to all Cresswind Residents any other time that the room is not being used. Many of the club members are available to offer instruction for new players. Look for an upcoming Tournament/Social sometime in the near future. Your Ping Pong Board Members are Jim Cook, Kim Miller, Randy Garcia, Wendy Warder, and Russ Schussler.
By Mary Ramatowski and Judy Rice
If you are interested in conversing in Spanish, please drop by on Monday evenings at 7pm in the Arts and Crafts Room. On September 23rd, we plan to meet for dinner at Pueblo’s on Dawsonville Highway (just past Culver’s) at 7pm. Cuanto más, más alegre. Contact Gordon Watts for more information.

Summer Slump for Social Singles?? No Way! By Susan Lahey A little hot weather is not going to stop this group from having fun! Some of our highlights for the summer included: • Lunchtime cruises around Lake Lanier in Bob’s Boat have been replaced by relaxing sunset dinner cruises. Take your pick between stopping at one of our favorite restaurants on the lake-- or going for a swim in a quiet cove and then dining on delicious food that the cruisers have brought to share. • Because of the heat and the size of the group, our summer picnic was moved from the pavilion to the ballroom. There are so many social singles now that we have outgrown the kitchen for our parties. That is a good thing! In addition to the tasty food, we enjoyed a rousing game of “picnic trivia” created especially for the event. At the end of the evening, the left-overs were taken to the fire department behind us on McEver Road. We are always looking for ways to give back to our community. • Some of us ventured over to Royston for an off-the-beaten-path experience at the Ty Cobb Museum. We had a delightful guide who not only showed us a wealth of baseball memorabilia, but also explained the many ways in which “The Georgia Peach” gave back to the community where he grew up. On the way to lunch at The Old Corner Hardware Store, we stopped at the Cobb Family monument at the Rose Hill Cemetery. It is definitely worth the one-hour trip to Royston to learn more about the first player voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (1936). • As always, we welcome new members to attend. You can learn more about us by finding the Social Singles page on the Cresswind at LL website.

Tanglers and Make & Take By Kathie Zeranski The Tanglers Group has not met for the past few months but will be meeting in the fall. I want to share with the group how I incorporated the Zentangle method in a Travel Journal. It was a lot of fun and was a great memento of the trip. Since many of us travel here at Cresswind, you might have fun with something like this on your next trip. Come to one of our meetings and learn the Zentangle inspired method. It is easy, fun and has many uses. Basically, it is “fancy doodling”! We meet the second Friday of each month in the Arts & Crafts Room. Hope to see you there. I will also be offering a Calligraphy Class this fall. I am looking at an Advanced Class to learn the Gothic Alphabet for those that took my classes last spring. Then I will look at another Beginning Class. Make & Take has gained a new Artist Presenter; Mary George. Mary is teaching a Pop-Up Card Class. Her first Class was in August and we are hoping she will teach many more. Her work is beautiful and the class had lots of fun! Jeanne Melson, has taught Mixed Media Collage and has a new Class planned. Look for more information on her class. Jeanne donated one of her pieces to the Garden to Table Cooking Club event. It was wonderful! Abby Saccomanno who has taught our fabulous Floral Arranging Classes is planning on a class for the fall that will use fruit in a low table arrangement. What a great arrangement for a fall table! Look for her class information. Information on classes comes out in the email list for Arts & Crafts first, then in the Daily Update. If you want to be added (or taken off ) the email list, let me know ZKathie@gmail.com We have added artists teaching more classes, so if you have a talent, skill you would like to share, please contact me and we will set up a class. There are many residents that love these classes and I know would like to see more.

Storytellers Club
By Dave Rusk
Once Upon a Time: A Storytellers’ Showcase The Storytellers’ Club, under the auspices of the Cresswind Performing Arts Club, is proud to present its first Storytellers’ Showcase on October 10th and 11th. Tickets for this event go on sale on Tuesday, September 3rd in the Cresswind Clubhouse lobby. The Showcase will feature ten Cresswind storytellers sharing their stories, featuring several story styles, including tall tales to real life adventures to folk tales to fables to legends. You might laugh, cry, be motivated or educated, but we feel you will all be entertained. The Storytelling Club at Cresswind was formed in January 2018, and holds monthly meetings where participants share their stories, learn storytelling techniques, and inspire each other with thoughtprovoking ideas. The club was also the progenitor of the very successful Liar’s Club event held in March of 2019. The monthly meetings are scheduled every second Wednesday of the month, and all residents are invited to attend. There are no membership dues. So, mark your calendar for either October 10th or 11th. Plan to purchase your $5.00 tickets on September 3rd and come prepared for an enjoyable and entertaining evening of stories told by your fellow Cresswind residents! We expect a fantastic response to this new Cresswind event so do not hesitate to get your tickets!
Cresswind LL Veterans Inc. By Roy Gogel
