2016! NEW YEAR, NEW IDEAS! Welcome to 2016! Oh Boy! Do we have some terrific things planned for you this year! Just like the title says, this is a New Year and we have some new ideas that will just blow you away. Get ready for some fun! We waste no time after that incredible New Year’s Eve Party to get you right back into activity mode. You will see some changes to our FITNESS PROGRAM right away! Lisa Bozeman will take over the scheduling and overall philosophy on fitness here at Cresswind. She is working very closely with Ava Lewis (Cresswind resident and instructor) to develop a much more structured system as well as adding new types of classes and instructors. Check out the Fitness schedule on the website calendar or at the front desk. So, get out your New Year’s checklist and cross off “Get in shape” and move on to “Have some fun, try something new.” Well, we have that covered in January, February, and throughout the rest of the year! We start with our first ever CRESSWIND FILM FESTIVAL! That’s right, 3 days and nights of newer and classic movies shown in our Grand Ballroom, for FREE, complete with FREE popcorn and refreshments. The festival runs from January 8th-10th and will feature all types of genres from romance and comedy to action and Sci-Fi. Maybe we will even roll out the red carpet and get the paparazzi camped out front! Want even more new stuff? OK…Starting January 16th, we begin our new TRIVIA NIGHTS which we will host every couple of months through the year. We bring in a professional trivia company and you create your own team of 8 people at a table or just come and jump into a random table. AND…we will have big prizes for EACH person on the winning teams! (No skimping here!) Start signing up you and/or your team now at the front desk. Tickets are only $5! Fun! Not enough fun yet in January? Well let’s take care of that! You all spoke and we listen! Apparently, you all here at Cresswind like to dance, dance dance! So, we kick off the New Year with a WINTER DANCE PARTY and bring in THE CLASS ACT BAND on January 23rd to perform live and funky! You may recognize the name from the Class Act Duo that you all loved at First Friday, but now they bring their full blown band and play nothing but 3 hours of Old School Funk, R&B, Disco, Pop and Dance music! Whew! Get your groove on Cresswind, it’s time to throw down in the Ballroom! Tickets only $12! That’s just the first month of 2016! February brings a couple new surprises as well! We start our 2016 FIRST FRIDAY SERIES again on February 5th. I had to kick it off with RODNEY APPLEBY! Some of you got a look at him during the Holiday Cocktail Party. So fun! Tickets only $5! Need a fun “Date Night” for Valentine’s Day Weekend? Well, how about our CRESSWIND COMEDY NIGHT on February 13th! FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMUNITY MANAGER The Finance Committee, Advisory Committee, and the Board of Directors have completed the process of reviewing the expenses for the Cresswind at Lake Lanier Homeowners Association and are pleased to announce that your 2016 annual assessments will remain the same at $807 per quarter. You should have received a coupon booklet in the mail with four coupons, representing each quarter. The 2016 Billing Schedule is as follows: January 1 $807.00 April 1 $807.00 July 1 $807.00 October 1 $807.00 $3,228.00 Please remember that your assessments are due on the 1st of each quarter and are considered late if received after the 15th due date on your coupon. Any payment received after the 15th is subject to a $25.00 late fee. Therefore we encourage you to make your payment on time in order to avoid any penalties. BOAT SLIP DUES: Boat Slip fees are $336.80 in 2016. Boat slips owners may submit payment by mail or through the First Service Residential online payment process along with your HOA dues. In closing, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who take good care of their property. It is this continued care that will assist in maintaining and/or increasing your property values year after year. Library Update By Eleanor Whalen

The Cresswind Library is a “lending” library. Select a book and take it home to enjoy. When you have finished your book, please return it to the library cart and a member of the library group will reshelf it. The Library is divided into 4 areas: Fiction, arranged alphabetically by author, Audio Books, DVD movies and Non-Fiction. There is also a small selection of Large Print books beneath the non-fiction section. All of the books and videos in our library have been donated. We appreciate and rely on these donations; however, due to limited shelf space we find it necessary to limit books by their copyright date. Please check the copyright dates on your donations and make sure they are 2006 or newer!

Ladies Bible Study Group by Judy Mota

Paying forward to our dedicated Teacher Brenda Uhler is the Ladies Bible Study teacher and leader here at Cresswind, meeting on Thursday afternoons. She spends many hours preparing her lessons and anticipating questions from participants. Her recent effort presenting Revelation was attended by more than 35 residents. One of the many fans of Brenda’s teaching efforts, Kris Kimery, suggested to Debbie Thornton that we should provide Brenda with a stand to teach from and help her keep papers organized. They got together with Judy Mota who suggested her husband Joe might be “volunteered” to help. Research into the possibility of a podium evolved into designing a lectern, built on a wheeled platform with a square post, and a book stand with a hinged top, providing book and paper storage, along with a pen stand. On the top is an embedded brass coin identifying the wood species as Red Oak of the Tiger Stripe figured variety, finished in satin Tung oil. A brass plaque is affixed, identifying Brenda Uhler as “Beloved Rabonni,” an Aramaic title of respect applied to spiritual leaders and instructors (Master), or learned persons. Kris Kimery and Joe Mota designed and built the lectern, and all seemed very pleased with the results. The photo speaks for itself. Page 10 | The Waterfall | January/February

Bocce Ball by Curt Dockter

The bocce ball SIG is taking a winter break. We intend to resume play in April. Our numbers have grown, and we welcome residents to join us in the spring. Also keep in mind that anyone is welcome to use the equipment and courts at any time on those warm winter days. The equipment is located on the first floor of the clubhouse in the cabinets across from the Arts and Crafts room. Contact Curt Dockter at cdockter@bellsouth.net for more information.

Creative Movement Class by Ava Lewis

The Creative Movement class is held every Tuesday at 1:00 PM. This class is structured as a wonderful way to exercise while having fun- a fantastic way to stay on a healthy path. The class is designed for anyone recovering from injury, experiencing health issues that keep you from exercising while standing and those who are immobile. The entire class is based on exercising in a safe environment while seated in a comfortable chair. We use exercise bands, weighted balls, and light weights. We have wonderful, fun music while exercising. Last week we had a blast and worked up a sweat all while listening to salsa music. Come have fun, laughter, and companionship while getting a great workout with your certified instructor.

Cresswind Fishing SIG News By Toby Kelley

Last spring one of Cresswind Fishing SIG’s newest members caught her first fish ever - a four inch long bluegill. That was an exciting day but that excitement paled in comparison to the joy of her recent catch. Sue Peterson is all smiles with her monster striped bass caught recently on Tom Brown’s boat with Dewey Colbaugh acting as first mate. Join the Cresswind Fishing SIG as we plan a trip in January to the Atlanta Boat Show to attend the fishing lectures and drool over the pretty boats. Learn about fishing during our winter “fish school”. Wet a line during one of our “group fishes. “ And, with any luck, we may be featuring your picture in the next Waterfall.

Cresswind Model Railroad SIG Announces the Cresswind Modular Model Railroad by Paul Pormen

Have you ever wanted to build your own model railroad? Don’t have the room for a large layout in your new Cresswind home? Well, the Cresswind Model Railroad SIG group will make it possible for you to be a part of the first ever Cresswind community model railroad. The Cresswind Model Railroad SIG will be building a Modular Layout beginning in January 2016. Each participant will build and own a part of this HO scale modular layout. Our modules will model the1950s/1960s era (transition from steam to diesel) in the Southeastern USA location and scenery during the summer season in the HO scale. Once completed and operational, members will be able to run trains on this layout and on other Atlanta area clubs layouts. Together with the other participants in this project, we are going to build a minimum of 4 corner modules and 4 fourfoot straight modules that can be joined together to make an operating layout. The SIG will meet together and build the modules so you need not have any prior experience. With eight modules, we will have a working model railroad. The club has several experienced model railroaders who will provide the leadership in construction of the models. The first workshop meeting and building of the modules will be held on January 9, 2016. Come and learn as this fun and exciting project gets underway. Dinner Group By Karen Silverthorn

We start off on February 6th with a Scandinavian-themed dinner. It is time to be adventurous with “Varm Krabbsmorgas, Gravlax and Lanttulaatikko to name a few of the dishes! The last dinner of the season on March 5, 2016 will be ‘An Evening at Downton Abbey’. Start planning your outfit to decide if you will be dressing in the upstairs dinner attire or as the downstairs help! Dinner Group members should keep March 5th free for a special ‘Downton Abbey’ event being planned in conjunction with the dinner! New members welcome at any time. Join the fun! It’s really about the fellowship …not the food! However due to the diverse menus offered to the group, food/beverage allergies and preferences cannot be accommodated. Members can decide prior to each dinner whether they wish to attend. Food and beverage costs are shared equally among participants at each house. Total dinner costs average $35 - $50 per couple which includes wine and a multi course meal. All Dinner Group members must be a paid member of the Cooking Club. Remember to pay your $5 per person ‘dues’ in January. Checks may be made out to Cooking Club and left at Guest Relations. If you are interested in being on the Dinner Group email list, you must email the Dinner Group coordinator (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to request your name is added specifically to the Dinner Group email list.

Our November dinner was an Italian theme with Anchovy Tartletts, Curried Vichyssoise and Amaretto Chicken. Lots of Italian wine and good conversation!

Men’s Bible Study by Dave Rasche

If you are not involved in a men’s Bible study, this is great time to start the new year and get involved with us. We are a non-denominational group of guys who have agreed to use the Holy Bible as the foundation of our studies. It was March 12, 2015 when our first small group bible study began. The Group held its annual meeting in November and elected new leaders, Pete Lyons and Ted Holbrook. They will take over on January 1, 2016. TheGroup overwhelmingly approved the proposal to add 12 more kayak racks - Horizontal racks, stacked 3 high along the sidewalk to the kayak dock. This has already been approved by the Advisory Committee and Board of Directors and is pending approval from the Army Corps of Engineers.

Look What We Have Cooking by Paula King

The Cooking Club will have its annual meeting on January 12th, 2016 in the Ballroom at 4:00pm. We will be introducing the officers for 2016: Paula King - President Susan Kooistra - Vice President Linda Gillot - Secretary Rose Micuch - Treasurer Dorothy Moore - Member at Large New Members and interested residents are encouraged to come, join, and be active in a great Cresswind Club. Yearly Dues remain at $5.00 per person, can be paid at the meeting and are due by January 31, 2016. The Cooking Club hosted the German House in the Passport Model event in October and our wonderful German Potato Salad (Thanks Jean Malcom) and brats were a huge hit. Dressed in cool German styled aprons while serving the great food(also making it) were Lisa Brown, Claudia McNabb, Jean & Ben Malcom, Susan Kooistra, Ron & Carol Stowe, and Ernie & Paula King. Quilters News by Jonnie Grimm

The Cresswind Quilters had the privilege of presenting two of our very own Cresswind resident veterans, Roy Gogel and Richard Lynt, with Quilts of Honor at the Veterans Club annual meeting in November. We are so proud of all our veterans. Thank you for your service! The Cresswind Quilters are very excited about our project starting in January 2016. As a result of the tremendous support, by Cresswind residents, of the Christmas donation quilt offered at the Christmas Bazaar, we plan to use those donations to provide a “Comfort” quilt for all Gainesville Police Department vehicles. These quilts will be used to comfort victims in need. We have spoken with Chief Martin of the Gainesville Police Department and received tremendous support. Chief Martin said; “These quilts will be a great comfort to victims. Presently we use wool blankets which are not very comforting.” There are currently 28 GPD vehicles, which means we have a big job ahead of us. We have been very busy over the past couple of months and currently have approximately 20 quilts on their way to completion. The past donations will cover the cost of materials for the initial 28 wrap quilts but we will be replenishing the quilts as needed throughout the year. This will be a Cresswind Quilters ongoing project for 2016. Anyone interested in continued support of the materials for this project can contact Jonnie Grimm at jonniegrimm@outlook.com to make a donation to this worthy cause. Cresswind Book Clubs by Judy Pallo

Our community is jam-packed with people, both men and women, who love to read and then discuss with others. We presently have eight active clubs. Seven of them, however, are full. The one remaining is led by Lynne Tryon. If interested please contact Lynne. Or do what the members of the other clubs did and start your own book club. Go to the Cresswind web site, find the eform under Resources and submit online to the office. With all our new neighbors, surely there are many who would like this information.

Bowling Club Update by James Selbitschka

With just two weeks remaining in the first half, the team Ten Pins is in first place. This team is comprised of Cheryl Dizard, Lydia Girolami, Nancy Kubiak, Maria Blankenship and Marilyn Maxson. They have a 7 point lead over the Kingpins and That’s How We Roll. The team Lucky Thirteen is holding up the rest of the league although the Rockers are giving it their best (worst?) to take last place away from them. The high averages are Jim Selbitschka with a 176 and Ron Mack with a 162 for the men and Helen Mack with a 144 average and Elaine Rogers with a 133 average for the women. Ron Mack has the high game for men with a 226 and Mary Joan Gogel with a 177 for the women. Mike Murray holds High series of 551 for the guys and Elaine Rogers has a 460 High series for the ladies. High game and series with handicap is 292 for Orlando Gonzalez and a 731 by Paul Brown for the men. For the ladies, Patzy Rollins has a 274 game and Janice Miles has a 706 series. As a reminder, Winter Tennis Open Play starts at 10:00 AM, Women’s Tuesday, Men’s Wednesday, and Mixed Friday. Sunday afternoon play has been cancelled for the time being. Look for news about early spring activities such as Mixed Round Robin events, Men’s and Women’s competitive leagues, Mixed Doubles tournament, training with the ball machine, and lessons. We are talking with the Deaton Creek (Del Webb) Community about some combined community mixed open play. They would bring a group of their players here to mix and mingle on the courts for some fun competitive play. We would reciprocate and travel to Deaton Creek on another date. And if there are enough competitive souls out there, we can put together 3-5 competitive mixed doubles teams to play some other communities. Look for some activity in early spring on courts 1-3. These courts will get a face lift ... cracks filled and courts repainted. We will keep you apprised of the timing for that project. Our community is growing and we have signed on a few new players. Evening Art Class -A Huge Success by Angela Medley

In the fall of 2015, approximately twenty Cresswind residents participated in a weekly Tuesday evening class titled “Clay, Sculpture, & Prints.” This was the first evening clay class to be offered at Cresswind. The class was lead by Angela Medley, a former visual arts teacher with forty years of teaching experience.

Participants chose to concentrate on developing their skills with clay and created a variety of ceramic containers and decorative items. They also enjoyed expanding their knowledge and creative skills together with meeting other residents. All were pleasantly surprised at discovering their hidden talents, and were successful in designing and producing personal pieces of pottery. This class will be offered again on Tuesday nights starting January 19, 2016. It will meet in the Arts & Crafts room on the lower floor of the Club. Class will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Veterans Club by Roy Gogel

Thank you to all the residents who helped feed and clothe needy Veterans and the homeless. Your contributions went and are going directly to people in need. Club members had an opportunity to directly interface with some of the recipients and the recipients’ hearts were truly grateful. Club meetings are the second Thursday at 7 PM. Come and learn about the various ways you can give back. All Veterans and those who support helping others such as needy Veterans are invited to attend. Needleworkers Class Late in October, as the days grew short and cool, the Cresswind Needleworkers Group sponsored an arm knitting Make-it, Take-it class led by Mary Emma and Lois Shoemaker. About 14 participants gathered to learn how to knit without needles. Each selected their own bulky yarn for the project, and everyone--even those who had never knitted before--successfully completed a lovely scarf within the class period. The Needleworkers group meets the first and third Thursday of each month from 10-12pm in the Arts & Craft Room. We each bring our own handwork and spend two hours working at projects and getting to know each other. We would love anyone who is interested in such activity to drop in and join us. If you need help with an old skill or want to develop a new one, there is generally someone there who can help with this. If you want ideas for a project, we can help with that. Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre Update by Bert Emma

Our fall main performance of “Nothing Serious” by Rich Orloff presented a set of comedic one act plays focusing on various elements of our own human nature. Where else can you get worldly advice from a penguin! Over eighty (80) Cresswind residents were part of the overall production team which worked diligently to bring the show to life for audiences to enjoy. Thanks to all residents on the production team and those who attended our performances – your support of the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre is greatly appreciated. A Cresswind “Playscript” Book Club has been formed where the book club members read and discuss various plays (just like a Book Club that reads novels – instead book club members will read plays). The next play to be discussed will be “The Gin Game” by D. L. Coburn. The discussion meeting will be held at 2:00pm in the Crow’s Nest on January 19, 2016. The RV Club had a most enjoyable December trip to Savannah to take in the sites of Christmas decorations. Attendees took a trolley tour of the city, dined at some great restaurants, and fellowshipped around a camp fire in the evening. The Club members also attended the Florida RV Super Show in January in Tampa. This show, which is the largest in the nation, offered everything RV, from pop-up campers to 35ft + motor homes. If any Cresswind residents have or are interested in purchasing a Recreational Vehicle, our club would be excited to include you in our future road trips. Committee News

AC News by Bob Rivers

The Advisory Committee was busy during the months of November and December, 2015. Some of the activities included: 1. Adding a Treasurer to the Finance Committee in lieu of a Chair. The Treasurer would review finance reports and assist in the preparation of the budget. The Treasurer appointed by the AC is Debbis Ellis, a previous member of the Finance Committee. She will attend all Advisory Committee business meetings and work closely with the Community Manager to develop and deliver reports to the Advisory Committee. 2. The AC completed an update of the Amenity Use Rules and Regulations and the Board approved the amended document in December. Ron Micuch and John Morris led the group working on this project. 3. Continued to work on the Cresswind LL Web Site transition to First Service’s community web interface. Claudia McNabb is the chair of that workgroup. John Gibbs has been instrumental in getting that work off the ground. 4. Worked with the Board and Community Manager to structure the Candidate Forum and vote for the selection of three new Advisory Committee members. Two forum sessions were held at 4 and 7 pm on Monday, December 7, 2015. After the forum, residents were able to vote by paper ballot or email. The vote was tabulated and the Board appointed three new members for a term beginning January 1, 2016. A hearty thanks is due to all of the members of the Advisory Committee and the chairs and members of its reporting committees for all of their productive work in 2015.

Communication Committee by Karen Brown-Crider

The Communication Committee recently formed a Work Group led by Sue Garcia to study the results of the Education Committee’s survey regarding the Daily Update, Eblasts, and The Waterfall. After reviewing and determining the majority of the requests, we compiled our recommendations and presented to the AC. Another Work Group led by Claudia McNabb is assisting in the improvement of the Cresswind website and making information easier to locate and more complete. In 2016, be on the lookout for some of these changes from your suggestions and input. We also would like to announce committee members for 2016: Karen Brown-Crider – Chair, Jonnie Grimm – Vice Chair, Janet Nelson – Secretary, Mary Ann Amick, Sue Garcia, Judy Hoberg, Claudia McNabb, Betsy Robertson, and Dan Skeels.

Welcome Committee by Sue Joninas

The Welcome Committee continues to welcome our new residents in Phases 2C and our new neighbors across Browns Bridge Road in Phase 3A. We have approximately six closings per week including resales. Our next Welcome Coffee will be held on February 14 at 10:00 AM in the Clubhouse. All new residents since September, that not have attended, will be invited. We have had over 130 closings this year including 16 resales. The Welcome Committee is working hard to welcome all new residents to Cresswind. If you have not heard from a Welcome Committee person within four weeks of officially moving in, please let me know. We want all to feel WELCOME.

Planning for great events for 2016 is underway! Your Education Committee works hard to sponsor a variety of events and activities which appeal to a majority of our residents. The new Education Committee Chair is Carol Zaremba. Under her leadership, the new committee will be committed to continue the mission of promoting education and lifelong learning for all Cresswind residents.
