Kitti’s Corner

Kitti’s Corner By Kitti Kleinedler

2020. Whew where has time gone? I remember reading George Orwell’s 1984 and thought how far off that year was. And it seems not too long ago everyone was holding their breath at the dawn of the new millennium wondering if our computers and technology were going to crash or go up in smoke at midnight. And now that was 20 years ago . . . We all know how time flies. But regardless which new year it is, resolutions and promises seem to abound. Most of us have done the “lose 20 pounds” “save more money” and “exercise more”. So, I have a different one for you . . . how about make 2020 the year to get involved in something you haven’t done before? Try something new. With well over 100 clubs here at the clubhouse, come sit in on something you have never done or haven’t done in a long time. An activity/game, an exercise class, an educational opportunity. There are so many to choose from. I often speak to residents who tell me they don’t come up to the clubhouse except for Bingo or a play or something. Well maybe this year to resolve to pick one thing each month to try out. You may end up not liking any of them, but at the end of the year you have tried 12 new things. That is pretty good at this stage of life. Another way to get involved is to volunteer to be on a committee. Granted some committees are busier than others, but with enough volunteers the load on each can be lightened. I notice week after week various committees advertising for new members. However, the response is usually pretty light. Most committees meet just once a month though the associated responsibilities may require more time. This clubhouse and HOA exist for the residents. I hope more and more of you find ways to enjoy all that is offered from this wonderful Cresswind at Lake Lanier lifestyle.

ARC NEWS: Time to Paint?

By Deborah Seymour

Are you thinking about painting the exterior of your home? Wonderful! Fresh paint leads to better aesthetics, increased curb appeal, and increased home values. But before you get started on your painting project, there are a few things you need to know. The clubhouse has a book for you to peruse that shows the 28 approved Kolter color schemes and also contains detailed guidance on what is allowed and what is not allowed. This article is an attempt to recap the highlights of this guidance. You can also reach out to any of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) members with your questions. Our contact information is located on the Cresswind website. First, you do not need ARC approval to repaint your house its original colors. However, you do need to file an ARC application so that First Service can register the fact that you painted. However, if you are changing anything, for example, the color of your door, you will need permission from the ARC before you start. If you live in a Kolter home you have a choice of any of the 28 color schemes used by Kolter. Please be aware that the scheme you choose must be different from two houses on either side of you and the house directly across the street. Also, you are not permitted to “mix and match” with siding color from one scheme and trim from another. If you live in a Levitt home, in addition to repainting in the original colors, you may choose any of the Kolter color schemes as well as any approved Levitt schemes.

Unfortunately, when Levitt left the development, they did not leave their color scheme information. The ARC has compiled a list of schemes that have been approved for Levitt houses. This list is included in the color scheme book at the clubhouse. If you plan to paint your Levitt home the original colors, please let the ARC know what the colors are so we can add your scheme to our list. As with the Kolter color schemes, the scheme you choose must be different from two houses on either side of you and the house directly across the street. Generally, your door and shutter color should be the color identified in your color scheme; however, there are some exceptions to the color schemes’ rules that allow for blue or red doors, or for black doors and shutters. There are three blue door colors available, two burgundy red door colors available, and one black door and shutter color available. The detailed guidance at the clubhouse lists these colors and the Cresswind addresses where you can view these colors. Remember, these changes require prior ARC approval prior to implementing. Lastly, you are not required to use Sherwin-Williams paint. The ARC is focused on the color, not on the brand of paint. Happy painting!

Committee Corner

Garden Committee By Sarah Galshack

Greetings from the Garden! As the cold/freezing weather has put most everything in the Community garden to bed, the Garden Committee is busy with the planning of a new project. We are pleased to announce that we have started work on the Serenity Native Perennial Garden. This garden will be located just north of the Common Ground Community Garden. It will be in the wooded area just back from the grassy area along the sidewalk on Indian Hawthorne. If you look, you will see some initial trails have been cleared, and the Committee is busy researching plants and shrubs that would have naturally grown there. Down the road as funding becomes available, we hope to add benches for the Cresswind Community to have a lovely quiet area to wander and relax. We are also busy lining up programs for our monthly meetings which will be held the second Thursday of the month in the Ballroom at 10 am. Everyone is welcome at these meetings, and we hope to see many of you there.

Retiring from the Committee after three years are Doug Geganto, Chairman, Chuck Wharton Deputy Chairman, Carol Hanlon, and Pam Papciak.

Covenants Committee By Pete Lyons The Covenants Committee serves as the first level of appeal for a resident issued a notice of violation of a community rule or regulation. Also, when the ARC or Landscape Committee have denied a homeowner’s request, a resident may appeal to this committee. Once the Covenants Committee hears such appeal, a recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for final action. Appeal requests should originate with Kitti Kleinedler, Community Manager. The Covenants Committee will have several new members for 2020. You may contact those members if you have any questions about the Committee.

Welcome Committee News

Health & Fitness Committee

By Denise Skeels

By Laurie Solomon

Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of ten members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held an Orientation in the Ballroom in December for those new residents. Approximately 44 residents attended this presentation by MTScapes, First Service, various committees, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. There will be four New Resident Orientations held in 2020. New officers for 2020 will be Sue Joninas, chair, Donna Brown, co-chair, and Kayne Tedone, secretary. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at skeelsdenise@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents! Welcome to Cresswind!

Now that the cold weather has arrived you may want to utilize our indoor fitness facility. If you need assistance, we have a total of four Personal Fitness Trainers who are highly skilled, certified, and ready to help you. Ava Lewis leads the way and has spent a huge amount of time making this a top-notch fitness facility. Cheryl Brown, Roy Mullet, and Vicki Bailey are offering free consults to residents. They all can set up a customized exercise plan based on your individual abilities and needs. Cheryl has been at Cresswind for a year and a half and has extensive training as an AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer as well as teaching the Thursday Zumba class. Roy has been a Fitness Trainer/Nutrition Coach since 2013 and has worked at Canyon Ranch in Lenox Massachusetts. Vicki has been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. She is an AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer with a multitude of other

certifications. All of the trainers keep up with their continuing education credits as deemed by the Fitness Industry. Come in out of the cold because it is never too late to maximize your potential. Our New Year, New You Health Fair is scheduled for January 18th from 10-1pm. Northside Hospital has secured eight tables for Bone Density Screenings, A1C checks, Blood Pressure Screenings, Knee Screenings, as well as Pulmonology/CPAP machines. We will also have a variety of health and fitness vendors introducing their offerings to the Cresswind community. In February, we will have another one of our well attended health seminars. The topic will be on Healthy Eating and Nutrition presented by a Dietician from Northside Hospital. The date and sign up information are to be announced. Become an active participant in your well-being by embracing what we on the Health and Fitness Committee are offering. New Year, New You!

Resident News

Board News

The Library

By Ron Micuch

By Eleanor Whalen

First, NEW YEAR to residents, family, and friends at Cresswind. May 2020 be a year full of joy and happiness. A few of the significant actions taken by the Board included the negotiating contracts in three major areas. 1. MTScapes was awarded a three year landscaping contract. The longer term contract resulted in substantial savings to the association. 2. The Board closed on a comprehensive insurance policy for the community. 3. A pool contract was renewed for 2020. Also, the Board hired Darlene Carr as an administrative assistant and Peggy Siewert as a part time guest relations front desk person. There will be an annual meeting for all residents in January 2020. Three new Board members will be selected based on an election which will be held in January 2020. We are close to a final transition from Developer to Association that will occur during the first quarter of 2020. We look forward to this event when full control of the Community will be transferred from the Developer, Kolter, to the Association. Details will be sent to the community as they become available.

The Library at the Club is a “lending” library. Visit the library, find a book to read, take it home to enjoy; when you have finished reading, just return it to the library cart. We thank all of the residents that have donated books, Audiobooks, DVDs and puzzles. Before making a book donation, please check the copyright date. We will be looking for books that were printed in 2010 and newer. Please, no magazines! When you visit the library, you may want to sit at one of the puzzle tables and put in a few pieces! If you would rather work on your puzzle at home, we have a huge selection in the cabinets across from the Arts & Crafts Room!

Cresswind Small Band News By John Kelley

There is music in the air here at Cresswind. Recently entertaining at events were the After Nine bunch doing a wonderful job being unplugged at the Garden party. The Cresswind jazz crew were proud to play for the Veterans Appreciation dinner and the Holiday party at the Clubhouse. The ukulele and bluegrass bands are making visitors and themselves smile each week. You can hear The Surfaces play Harold Timm’s original song as they run the credits on a new netflix’ s TV show- how cool is that? Thanks for the fun all you Cresswind musicians.

Bible Study Club By Dave Dittmeier

The Women’s & Men’s Bible Study Clubs took the holidays off but then picked up again in January. The Women continue their study of Paul’s Letters, while the Men continue with their study of the Book of Genesis. The Way proceed with a study of the Book of Matthew. Several Couples Bible Studies continue to meet in private homes in the community. All of these various groups are open to all residents regardless of the levels of Bible knowledge as we read, teach, share and learn. Plus, we have no dues! The Bible Study Clubs concluded the Nondenominational Service for 2019 with Lessons and Carols in the lobby of the clubhouse where seasonal Scriptures were read and carols were sung. We also continued the monthly Services with guest speakers from the WaterWorks Ministry, which is led by our own Tom Flaim and Charlie Phillips from Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Nondenominational Services are open to all residents.

At the meeting, Kathy Zeranski and Lisa Giblin demonstrated how to make holiday décor and craft items from candy canes and peppermints. They also shared tasty dessert and appetizer recipes while Henry Zeranski and Darrell Woulf made sugar cookie martinis for all to taste. Mary Jo Smith explained the steps to having a perfectly decorated mantel and how easily this can be done with just a few items. She built an actual mantel to illustrate this and her embellishments could be used in any style home and easily mounted for the holiday season. Later in November, club members traveled to Atlanta for another shopping adventure at AmericasMart and will do this again in 2020. The club has new ideas for the new year and is always looking for more. Contact any board member if you have a suggestion to share. Remember dues for 2020 are $5, and members or those wanting to join may put their checks in the club mailbox in the back right corner of the Clubhouse lobby.

Adventures in Dining By Karen Silverthorn Dinner group members gather four times a year to enjoy great meals. But it is really all about meeting new neighbors and making friends rather than the food. Mark your calendars now for the two remaining sit-down dinners: Feb. 1, 2020 – President Day theme with pork; Mar. 7, 2020 – French Spring Flavors with Cornish hens. Anyone can join at any time during the year, but annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Guidelines for Adventures in Dining are on the Cooking Club’s website. If you are interested in joining, email the coordinator directly (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the dining group email list. For each meal, all recipes are provided and courses assigned to those attending. There are always a total of four couples/ pairs of people at each host home. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses on the same evening, each using the

same recipes and making the same courses. All food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Course leads are assigned to help answer ingredient and cooking questions. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy delicious meals while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

New Dance Club!

By Wendy O’Hanlon

A NEW dance club, Dance Rhythms, is starting in January on Sundays at 4 pm. Wendy has led two separate dance clubs for the past year and is excited to bring a new form of dance that emphasizes a coordination of upper body styling with dance steps. Dancers will mirror movement and will be encouraged to stay within their individual physical abilities. The tempo of the music will range from slow, to moderately fast, and back to slow for the end of the 45-50 minute session. Dance shoes are not required but a supportive shoe such as a dance sneaker or athletic shoe that has a slightly worn sole is best. No dance socks, please. Email golfgirl2011@att.net for more specifics. Video links will be provided upon request and no cost, no dues!

Genealogy Club

The Genealogy Club did not meet the last two months of the year but has exciting plans for 2020. Cooking Club Closes Out Another Successful Year! As we wrap up 2019, we take a moment to look back on the successes, the challenges and ways to improve for the future. The Cooking Club was a major club contributor to the Cresswind Veteran Recognition Luncheon, procured a commercial warming oven for the HOA, and donated over $1600 to the Gainesville Exploration Academy to purchase books for each individual level classroom library. We also send a huge “thank you” to Rob Plawecki our DJ, who passed his fee to the Cresswind Flag Club to purchase more flags. Our membership soared to 787 members which is evidence of the power of our volunteers and their dedication to making events fun and rewarding. We added new events with Cinco de Mayo, Garden to Table, and the Gingerbread House creation. Improvements were incorporated throughout the year that resulted in positive feedback from our attendees.

By Lisa Giblin

The Cooking Club Board has been busy planning for 2020. We updated and received approval for our Bylaws and added three new Board members. The results are as follows: President

Cresswind Fishing Club News By Gus Brown, reporter

As the weather cools the big fish have moved into the Cresswind covecheck out this beauty John S. caught on Tom Brown’s boat within sight of the Cresswind dock. Good one, boys! Mike T. placed first in his bass club tournament - weighed in 5 spotted bass for a total of 14.5 pounds - a prize winning mess of fish. We plan to make a road trip to the Atlanta Boat Show in January and are brainstorming our winter Fishing School. Join us for the fun.

Ending the Year on a High Note By Susan Lahey

It was a busy November for the Social Singles, who hosted an impromptu Thanksgiving dinner in the Crow’s Nest for residents. In addition to our single members, four Cresswind couples joined the fun for a delicious meal and fellowship. Earlier in the month, we also hosted a potluck dinner honoring our Veteran members; it is always a pleasure to celebrate their service to the country. Other events included a trip to Alpharetta to dance with the popular Glow Band, and the weather allowed one more Wilshire Trail hike to a downtown restaurant. Lots of activities took place in December, too! Some members went to a lacrosse meet in Atlanta and headed to Dahlonega to see the holiday lights and enjoyed a dinner together at Bourbon Street Grill. December 8th was the Gainesville Christmas Parade, and some of our creative members were busy making lanterns at Celestial Studio so that they could take part in the first-ever lantern parade down Green Street. An additional holiday celebration was our catered Christmas dinner in the clubhouse on December 20th. Heading into January, we are looking forward to our White Elephant exchange. This is your chance to recycle that ugly necktie that Aunt Beatrice gave you for your birthday! Happy 2020 to all of Cresswind from this enthusiastic and active group of Social Singles!

We plan to play as soon as it is warm enough, possibly in March. Watch the Daily Update for more information. For those of you who have not played in years, come join us. We really do have fun!

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the job Fockele Garden Company did with our yard. Their plan met our goals to soften the view with colorful plants and attract birds and butterflies. The sound and sparkle of the fountain especially attracts wildlife. Not only do we enjoy hearing the babbling brook from inside, but I find myself drawn to sitting outside to listen and watch. It’s very calming. Thanks for creating a wonderful retreat for us and a haven for wildlife. —Linda and Gordon Potter

HUNGER GAMES winners (October 27) - from the pictures you can see we had some fantastic team winners. I do believe a fun day was Novice/ had by all. Thank you to all who helped to put on the event, teams, Intermediate and spectators. BRONZE winners Our BINGO “fund” raiser was a rollicking night for all. Many thanks to Howie Mueller and Gary Crawford for making this such a fun evening. From this event we have been able to purchase six more benches for our courts. This now makes ten new benches for all to enjoy. We held our end of the year membership meeting on November 18. We elected five new board members for 2020. Please welcome your 2020 Board: Rosemarie Bower, President; Gary Foster, Vice President; Wendy Warder, secretary, Linda Potter, treasurer, Pat Burke, member at large; Gerry Cieply, member at large; and Donna Howard, member at large and social director. Fall Leagues finished on December 12. Some challenges with the weather made it a little difficult to get the games in but it was great to see folks working out different times to play. A round of applause to all who participated! As I reflect to 2019, we as members had opportunities to participate in tournaments, leagues, novice trainings, and open plays. It is important for all of us to realize that there is a group that helped to make this club grow and THEY MADE THESE EVENTS HAPPEN! I would like to thank our 2019 Board Members: Amy Pike, President; Kim Miller, Vice President; Chuck Treloar, treasurer; Dave Binnix, member at large, Jan Cieply, member at large, and Pat Fagan, member at large. Enjoy your time off the board – we’ll see you on the courts…. We will be holding our annual meeting with our membership in the clubhouse ballroom on Monday, January 27, 2020, at 7 p.m. We encourage you to come out and meet your new board and we will be voting on some by law changes. Information regarding this will be sent to members prior to the meeting. We also will look at upcoming events for the year. Remember to sign up for the Polar Express Tournament by January 10. Tournament play will be held Saturday, January 25 at 12 noon. Hmm… will it be cold, or will it be warm? A reminder to always check out our website: www.cresswindpickleball. com for upcoming events, pictures from our tournaments and other interesting info.

The Quilting Club By Evelyne Palmer

The Quilting Club ended 2019 with their Holiday Party and planning the 2020 year. It has become the tradition to make a quilt for a member of the Club to win and Pam Timm was the lucky winner of the beautiful quilt made by Sheran Connolly. Now Pam gets to make a quilt for next year’s party. We have delivered a total of 150 quilts to Legacy Link for Seniors in need in the Hall County and surrounding areas since we started this project in 2018 and made an additional 14 for the Quilts for Kids projects in 2019. We welcome any resident to stop by and share their favorite quilt or quilting project with us. Contact Evelyne at hybiscus5@outlook.com to make arrangements. If you are a quilter but not ready to be a Club Member, but have a project, technique, or talent to share, please consider sharing with our group. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft room. Stop by, meet us and see the work we do. We do many quilting related projects, big and small, work at individual levels, and have fun! The Club is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish.

RV Club

By Karen Silverthorn

Cresswind’s R.V. Club had a busy fall with some great campouts. Eleven rigs stayed at River Vista Mountain Campground in Dillard in the north Georgia mountains in October. In November, six rigs gathered in Florida at the Royal Coachmen RV Resort in Nokomis. Being so close to Sarasota, we had a full week of fun activities. Campers toured Ringling Circus museum, toured the Sandcastle building festival at Siesta Key Beach; admired the art creations of the Sidewalk Chalk festival with artists from all over the world; toured the Mote Aquarium and learned about its conservation efforts; and enjoyed a great lunch at the Columbia restaurant which has been a long standing Spanish eatery in the area. Four great group R.V. trips have been planned for 2020. Check the R.V. Club website (https://sites.google.com/site/cllrvclub) for the scheduled trips: March 1 – 8, 2020 – Americus Brickyard Plantation; April 29 – 5, 2020 – Charleston, N.C.; September 23 – 30, 2020 - Townsend/Cades Cove, TN; November 15 – 22, 2020 – Orange Beach, AL. Reminder to all members: let us know via the gmail account whenever you book any of these trips! R.V. Club members also gather several times a year for social evenings and meetings at the clubhouse. Do you have an R.V.? Let us know if you are interested in

Community Travel Club By Pam Papciak

What better way to make Cresswind friends then to share new experiences together? The Community Travel Club provides a way to do this through traveling and shared memories. In December a coachful of our members enjoyed the entertainment and beaches of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The condos were on the beach with views of the Atlantic Ocean. The excellent entertainment and sights helped everyone get in the festive holiday spirit. On January 12th our members will be attending a performance of Shen Yun. The music and dance celebrate 5,000 years of Chinese history. We are looking forward to a colorful and spectacular show. If you are interested in attending there is still time to join the Waitlist for this event. At our Thursday, January 9th General Meeting, Vickie McFalls from Daniel’s Tours will be presenting our spring 4-day, 3-night trip to Savannah. Our lodgings will be right on the river in the heart of Savannah. Even if you have been to Savannah before, there is so much to see; the city never gets tiresome to visit. Our Tuesday, February 18th trip is to the Booth Western Museum/Etowah Indian Mounds. It is surprising to find the largest western museum in our country right here in

Cartersville, GA. If you have never been there, you are in for a treat. There are Frederick Remington sculptures and so much more about our pioneering and western frontier history. Go to the Community Travel Club website to check out videos of both venues. Back by popular demand is our Taste of Gainesville March trip. This is a must-do trip, if you are new to our community or have not had time to explore the city to find the local treasures that are right here in our own backyard. You will visit venues that you will want to visit again or take grandkids or visiting guests, too. Everyone is invited to join us at our Thursday, January 9th General Meeting in the Ballroom at 4:00. To enjoy any of our trips you need to be a member for only $5. Hope to see you there!

Model Railroad Club By Bill Edmondson

It has been a productive and rewarding year for our Model Railroad Club, and we are looking forward to more adventures and fun in 2020. Throughout 2019, we have had club meetings which involved educational clinics on various ‘how-to’ subjects, including modeling tips for scenery, locomotive engine maintenance, calibration of rolling stock wheels/axles/couplings, proper weight distribution within freight cars, and operational upgrades to our modular layout. We successfully installed Digitrax DCC equipment on our modules to transition from DC to DCC operations… purchased a WIFI unit which allows us to use our cell phones as a throttle for trains operating simultaneously. We have also had the ability to set up our modular display and run trains for our members and for Cresswind residents and their children/grandchildren’s viewing pleasure. Our final viewing opportunity was Dec 21st during Breakfast with Santa.

Our club members also make visits to various large and spectacular layouts in and around metro-Atlanta, most recently to Dr. Joe’s (you can view a video taken by following the link posted on our Model Railroad Club webpage in the Cresswind at LL>info>clubs). We are in planning stages to visit others in early 2020. If you are interested in model railroading, please come visit us! www.georgiacloset.biz

Writers in the Wind: Cresswind Creative Writers Group By: Laurie Homa Writers in the Wind wrapped up the year with a Holiday get together at the home of Laurie Homa. As always, the entrance to the party is a written assignment. This year’s assignment was to write about your favorite Christmas or Holiday. The stories were most enjoyable.

Our group is looking forward to 2020 and hoping the new year will reinvigorate us with more imagination as we venture into the uncharted world of the creative mind. Broadening our vocabulary and depicting more descriptive scenes are just a few of our goals going forward. We are a small group of published writers and beginners. We help each other through creative critiques, helpful hints, and plenty of friendly encouragement. If you would like a sneak peek, you can check us out by reading some of our written work in the binders located on the coffee table in the Cresswind Library. Writers in the Wind meets the last Thursday of every month from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. If you love to write and want to improve your writing skills, please come join us. Our meeting room has yet to be determined. For more information, contact Laurie Homa at m2old4this@aol.com
