EDUCATION COMMITTEE TO OFFER CPR/AED CLASSES
The Cresswind Education Committee kicks off 2022 with a CPR/AED course taught by Cresswind resident and American Heart Association instructor Karen Silverthorn. The course trains participants on how to provide CPR and use an automated external defibrillator on a patient during a medical emergency. Individual classes will be offered on four dates to accommodate as many residents as possible.
Classes are tentatively planned for 12:30 PM Jan. 18; 5:30 PM Jan. 19; 12:30 PM Jan. 21; and 1:30 PM Jan. 24. Individual classes last about four hours and are limited to eight participants each. Registration is $13, which covers course materials. Interested residents may indicate a specific class date and pay the registration fee at the front desk of the clubhouse. Certification will be available upon request.
For more information on Education Committee programming, see “Upcoming Events” and other links by logging into cresswindatll.com and clicking on the “Lifestyle” drop-down menu, then “Committees” and “Education Committee.”

Have you gone to check out all of the pictures from Whoville Extravaganza??
If not, then log into the Cresswind Website to check out those pictures as well as the wonderful pictures from the First Responder Holiday Parade last night! Cresswind residents continue to amaze me...last night through the efforts of the Education Committee we were able to grant the First Responders over $8,000. First each first responder was given a tumbler filled with gift cards and coupons to local places. Then on top of that Cresswind residents raised $2,200 for Police Unity Tour and then to top it all off through the Community Fund we raised $5,000 to help the efforts by the Gainesville Police Department and Meals on Wheels to bring warmth to local seniors in Hall County. I don’t know about you all, but I feel absolutely blessed to be a part of Cresswind at Lake Lanier.
LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Welcome to 2022! This is the second in a series of articles regarding the idiosyncrasies of landscaping here at Cresswind Lake Lanier, this article will deal with groundcovers, especially those used for erosion control.
Unfortunately, there are numerous locations within Cresswind that have erosion control issues. Erosion issues are most prominent or worrisome on steep slopes, especially those that are along the perimeters of Cresswind property, or along the many areas that are adjacent to watershed property. As a reminder, we have three watershed entities that have manage property within Cresswind: US Army Corps of Engineers, Gainesville Watershed, and Hall County Watershed.
Areas with the most erosion issues tend to be found near/on non-irrigated residential property. These areas are typically found behind homes on berms along the perimeters of Cresswind property. These areas are not maintained in the same manner as Primary Common Areas or irrigated residential property. Non-irrigated, residential property is any homeowner property that was not originally covered with pine straw and/or maintained as homeowner landscape. That means there is limited maintenance. These areas are not weeded, do not receive pine straw application, and do not receive herbicide or fertilizer applications. Per the contract with MTScapes, these areas are only to be cut back twice a year. Typically, this is done in June-July and again in October-November.
What to do about erosion issues or if you have non-irrigated residential property associated with your home. There are several options, however the recommended, and perhaps best, erosion control material is low-lying junipers. There are several varieties available, and all do well in our climate. So, selection of the variety would be personal choice.
WHY JUNIPERS
First and foremost, they are durable and provide excellent erosion control. Once planted, they spread well, and their root systems spread out widely, creating an underground web of erosion control. They are also very low maintenance. They do not require any trimming, and once established, require little to no additional watering. As with any new plantings, they will require some watering (in addition to rain). That can be accomplished by using a garden hose and sprinkler system or redirecting some of your sprinkler system to provide minimal watering 1-2 times a week. But this is only required until the plants have become established, generally six to eight months.
I know some residents are hesitant to use junipers because there is a rumor goin’ round that they attract snakes. NO, junipers do not attract snakes! We live in an area with an abundance of wildlife, including some snakes. But junipers do not attract snakes any more than a rose bush or hostas. Another bonus to planting junipers is they are deer resistant. While there are no deer-proof plants, deer tend to pass up the junipers.
OTHER PLANTS
There are some hollies, such as the soft-touch holly, which make excellent ground covers and provide erosion control. While the hollies are also deer resistant, they tend to be taller and more vertical in growth. Some varieties are shorter; however, they tend to be more compact in their spread when compared to junipers. As a result, more plants may be required to cover the expanse or slope. They may also require some additional trimming or other maintenance.
While there are some flowering types of erosion control/ground cover available, these types of plants tend to require significant maintenance, are not deer resistant, and often are either deciduous (drop their leaves or vegetation). As a result, during winter months they could become unsightly, even given the appearance of being dead.
FINAL COMMENTS
Whatever groundcover you chose, please keep the following in mind: 1) you will need to submit an External Improvement Form (EIR Landscape) to receive approval for the planting; and 2) homeowners are responsible for on-going maintenance.
Welcome Committee
By Sue Joninas
The Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents with all of them being resales. Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us, and we will help them in any way we can. We also find that neighbors on their street are reaching out to make them feel welcome. The Welcome Committee has taken over doing tours for new residents, in the clubhouse as well as outside of the clubhouse. We have given three of these as of this news article.
If you would like a tour, please contact me. We held a New Resident Orientation on November 10th for all new residents since April 2021. It was well attended. We hosted a Meet and Greet on December 2nd for all new residents since April. It was well attended and enjoyed by all.
If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four to six weeks of Closing on your new home, please contact me at sjoninas@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents. Welcome to Cresswind!

Your Social Committee has been busy with many HOA activities in the last several months. Some of the many events we have been involved with include the Beatles Tribute Band, Cherry Cherry Tribute Concert, Dueling Pianos, and the Holiday Market Vendor Fair.
Your Social Committee is gearing up and putting on their elf hats for some holiday events that include the Whoville Extravaganza, The Holiday Party, and the New Year’s Eve party.
We anticipate another busy year and look forward to many fun events for the HOA. Your Social Committee works very hard in the background to help your Lifestyle Director with the many HOA events happening here at Cresswind.
We all wish you a joyous holiday season and all the best in 2022!

WEBSITE COMMITTEE
By Wilton Rooks, Chair
The Website Committee was recently established by a resolution of the HOA Board to manage the Cresswind website. The purpose of the committee is to update and enhance the website to be more responsive to the needs of all residents of Cresswind.
The members of the committee are: Wilton Rooks – Chair Tim Roth – Vice Chair Cindy Laney - Secretary Gene Bramblett Ernie Seymour Bert Emma Maggie Shay - Webmaster Brett Brayman – HOA Liaison
Three primary agenda items were established: 1. Reorganize the clubs, committees, HOA, and legacy documents and images with access through a Document Center on the home page. 2. Restructure the home page drop down menus. 3. Establish policies and procedures document to assure continuity and professional management of the website.
In addition, a new calendar system was approved by the HOA Board and is now available with enhanced functions and features. Using the new calendar, club leaders can create and edit their own reservations rather than depending on staff to approve their requests.
