Welcome to 2021!

elcome all to 2021 – This Article would certainly be remiss if I did I not acknowledge the newly elected HOA Board Members Cheryl Thompson and Brett Rayman – Congratulations to them and I look forward to a most active year for our Board and Community. I would also be remiss if I did not acknowledge the first major event of the year in our Clubhouse – the Covid-19 Vaccination Program. The ultimate success of this program rested with our own Cresswind Medical and Non-Medical Volunteers, without who it could not have happened. Guided by Dr. Zachary Taylor, John Stevens, our Attorney George Nowack and the Nurses from the Local Department of Health, the program was put in place and performed in a most expeditious and professional manner, setting an incredibly high standard for such an ambitious program – we all need to feel proud. A thanks to all who made it possible and who will return on February 16 and 25 to administer the 2nd doses to all of our residents. We recently bid 2020 farewell and turned the page to look ahead to this new year. By all standards we as a community and as a nation confronted multiple enemies. We all struggled to understand on a personal, community and national perspective the issues, conflicting standards and guidance we were receiving on a continuous basis. Even through the darker periods last year, the self imposed lockdowns, and intrinsic fears our community confronted, we were able to make many positive strides. At the same time, I believe we put some of our standards and perspectives were put to a very important test. Unfortunately, and in some cases, we actually abandoned our standards and aspirations of respect

Page 4

for neighbors and civil engagement as we all struggled to cope with this major interruption in our lives. I believe the very opposite should have happened. We needed to further embrace Cresswind Strong, our neighbors and our ability and willingness to weather this unprecedented year. If we look back, your board of directors strived to embrace our culture and move ahead while facing numerous constraints. Quickly reviewing last year’s accomplishments should truly put smiles on everyone’s faces as our community moved forward in a year when time stood still. We successfully completed the Transition from Developer Control to becoming masters of our own destiny. We negotiated a new Spectrum Contract which all residents benefited from. The beginning of a repair and maintenance program for our roads was commenced and will continue for years to come. We resurfaced all of the Tennis and Pickleball Courts, again, supporting the best interests of our Community. We began the re-opening process of our Amenities and Clubhouse. We were able through the efforts of Cresswind Strong Residents facilitate a COID-19 Vaccination Program of which we can all be proud of. Yet, despite all of those positives, I sensed an abandonment and a hopelessness which was certainly not characteristic of our community, but a consequence of our fears and anger. Our behaviors, our interactions and our relationships suffered dearly. We need to put away our anger our fear and our tattered relationships and go through a rebuilding process. The board of directors has again signed up to a civility pledge which will govern our actions amongst ourselves and I believe our community needs to adopt the same. We need to embrace all that is good about

The WATERFALL

our community and ourselves, stand tall and move ahead towards our new normal. In our retirement years we set high standards and goals for each other and ourselves. We need to move with all due haste to towards achieving those goals and making Cresswind that most desirable place to live. 2021 is unfolding in front of us on a daily basis – hope and our goals are our friends – time is not. We need to make every today and tomorrow better than yesterday. The clubhouse is reopening, we will again have those most enjoyable activities and entertainment venues, and I believe all of our clubs will begin to move towards the functionality we all knew to grow to expect, love and embrace. This is the hope I have for Cresswind and see no reason that it will not happen. It needs to start on every street it needs to be reinforced by your board of directors and every resident as we strive to move past the damage COVID-19 has left in its wake. We still all need to be vigilant and follow necessary guidelines as our rebuilding efforts take foothold. The good news is the clubhouse now has a much improved ventilation system and many of our residents have already participated in the local and regional vaccination programs. As the spring approaches let us all commit to a revitalization throughout our community, inspired by our actions and concerns for each other and achieving everything we all moved here for. I know that myself and your Board are committed to that as we all look forward to a better 2021 and achieving the best new normalcy we can collectively achieve. Regards Dan Gershkowitz

Committee Corner Some Friendly Reminders from the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) for 2021 Please remember that any changes to the exterior of a Cresswind at Lake Lanier residence requires ARC approval in advance of starting the work. This means that any modification, alteration, or addition of ornamentation of any type or size to your home that can be seen by you, a neighbor, or pedestrians, requires advance approval from the ARC. Please remember this includes our back yards, and includes statues, sculptures, bird baths, flower pots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc. This also includes replacement of items with an identical item, for example, outside garage lights. So, do not start beautifying your home exterior or yard until you have submitted a request to the ARC and received written approval from the community manager. If you do not, you may be asked to remove the items and you may receive warning notices from the community manager. Fines can be levied if you fail to comply with the warning notices. One caveat: if you are repainting your house, shutters, and doors in their original colors, an ARC application with actual color paint chips still must be submitted. Your ARC application will be used by the community manager to register that your house has been repainted. The good news is that, once you submit your request, the approval is automatic, and you can proceed with the repainting. In fact, you will not receive any further correspondence from the ARC on this specific type of repainting request. Are you planning a major modification to your house or yard? Don’t wake up one morning and be surprised to find a dumpster in your driveway. Remember to check with your contractor early on to verify that they do not plan to put a dumpster and/or a POD for temporary storage on site. If your contractor plans to place a dumpster or a POD, don’t forget that you need prior written ARC approval. When you request approval for a dumpster or a POD, you will be required to specify a time period for their use, and they must be removed immediately after the work is completed. Do not Page 6

By Debbie Seymour

worry, if needed, a reasonable time extension can be requested and may be granted by the ARC. Dumpsters and PODS must be placed on your driveway and cannot extend into the sidewalk or driveway apron. Dumpsters and PODS cannot be placed in the street. Dumpsters must be placed on a plywood base to minimize leakage of rain water which could contain other liquids that were placed in the dumpster, and to prevent damage to your driveway. Since the potential for damage to community property exists when delivering, using, or removing the dumpster or POD, the ARC requires a signed ARC-2 Attachment-A, Security Deposit form, and a $1,500 security deposit with the application. You will be refunded the deposit after a final inspection is performed by an ARC member who will visit to confirm that no damage has occurred. And lastly, good news! Stay tuned for upcoming changes to the ARC driveway resurfacing rules and regulations (R&Rs)! These will be issued in the next revision of the R&Rs, and allow homeowners to use other professional vendors to perform driveway resurfacing, as long as they use a specified product, color, and process to ensure the work will meet Cresswind standards. Please note that homeowners may not resurface their driveways themselves and must use a professional contractor. The approved sealant and color is a Stardek I solid concrete color sealer which is a custom blend of 50% Champagne and 50% Smoke to obtain the approved concrete color. Stardek’s product has been an industry leader for over 40 years and must be used by the contractor to maintain the quality, color, and consistency of work in the community. The specified process includes a pressure wash and etch; grinding if required; chasing and filling cracks; and application of a base coat (texture mix), spray texture, and two coats of Stardek I sealer. Two important points to remember: All work must be approved by ARC before and after the resurfacing process, and that sidewalks are common property and cannot be resurfaced or colored.

Committee Corner Covenants, Rules and Regulations Committee The CRRC has started project “2021 Connect.” It involves our team liaisons connecting with the chairs of each CW committee and club that are responsible for sections in the Rules & Regulations Manual. Purpose of this project is to enhance our connectivity with your CW committees and clubs in two ways. 1. A better communication line for future amendments a committee or club may want to address. 2. Review with the each chair the CRRC Appeal Manual. This manual is our guide to manage and navigate through an appeal. All of this to better support the Cresswind community. In this newsletters “Did You Know” section: 5-2.2. ARC Approval Required [page 59] (a) All Exterior Ornamentation (1) Any modification, alteration, or addition of ornamentation of any type or size to a home in Cresswind, that is, anything that can be seen by you, a neighbor, or pedestrians requires advance approval from the ARC. This includes statues, metal or concrete sculptures, bird baths, flower pots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc. Failure to obtain advance approval may be cause for the item(s) to be removed. Fines will be levied for a failure to comply with warning notices from the Community Manager. (See 7-1 Enforcement of Rules and Regulations.)

(2) Planting of trees, shrubs, or other live items are subject to the approval of the Landscape Committee. 2-1.9. Safety [page 21] (a) In the event of an emergency or unsafe condition, please notify an Amenity Complex Management Staff representative at the front desk or after hours call 877-411-1165. (b) Any incidents or accidents occurring during periods of time when management staff are not on site (whether requiring medical attention or not) will require the preparation and submission of a form CLL-3 Incident Report to the Management Staff the next business day. (c) AED machines (Automated External Defibrillators) are located by the office in the Fitness Center (on the second level), by the elevators on levels 1 & 3, next to the Tennis Court restroom and by the Pavilion behind the Complex. First Aid Kits are located throughout the Amenity Complex. If we can answer any questions about the Rules & Regulations, please feel free to contact a committee member. Member’s roster and mission statement are on the Cresswind website. Go to “INFO” tab, then “COMMITTEES”, select “Covenants and Rules and Regulations Committee”.

Welcome Committee News Our Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents with all being resales. Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us and we will help them in any way possible. We also find that neighbors on each street are reaching out to make the new residents feel welcome. Committee Corner Health & Fitness Committee “Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes.” Hugh Prather “Resilience is all about being able to overcome the unexpected.” Jamais Cascio This past year we have all experienced change in a dynamic way and hopefully have built our resilience. I am writing this on February 1, 2021 to be distributed to Cresswind residents in March 2021. As of today, I know that 770 residents have received their first Moderna vaccination right here on site. These same residents will receive the second dose by the time you read this Waterfall. Thanks to the phenomenal effort of our Board of Directors, notably Dan Gershkowitz and John Stevens as well as all of the wonderful volunteers for facilitating this important event. Protocol has been put in place which will allow residents to utilize some of the Clubhouse facilities. The exact plan has been outlined in Kitti’s email to residents. Hopefully all participants are heeding the safety guidelines in order to keep everyone safe. The Health & Fitness Committee is looking forward to the future when we can host our annual Fitness Fair, as well as scheduling seminars by physicians from Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Northside Hospital to speak in their area of expertise. Coordinating with the topic of change I would like to clarify a myth that abounds in the area of fitness. True

or False: you can lose body fat wherever you want with some spot exercises. False, the spot reduction fallacy assumes that when you exercise a certain body part, such as your abdominals or legs, the involved muscles use the surrounding fat for energy. Seems like common sense, but the body does not work that way. When a muscle is challenged to draw upon fat stores for energy, the fat used is taken from the entire body. The muscles involved will be strengthened, but it will not specifically target the fat stored in that area. No localized fat loss will be accomplished. Body fat is lost through a comprehensive program that combines cardiovascular activity, strength training, and a healthy balanced diet. True or False: when you stop exercising your muscles will turn to fat. False, a muscle cell is a muscle cell, and a fat cell is a fat cell; the two are not interchangeable. When people stop exercising they do not take their calorie consumption into consideration to accommodate the reduced activity. Muscles can atrophy and body fat may increase, thereby giving the appearance that muscles have turned to fat. We all know that the derivation of words can be curious. At one time or another we have all experienced the pain and stiffness of a charley horse after working out. It is said that in the 1890’s a horse named Charley drew a roller in the White Sox ballpark in Chicago. This horse had a strange limp and during that time the fans applied the name charley horse to any player affected with a muscular stiffness or a limp. Now when that familiar discomfort occurs, you will think of Charley the horse instead of the pain.

Education Committee The Cresswind Education Committee hosted a Zoom presentation on February 23rd with Lisa Howard, wellness coordinator for the Legacy Link Area Agency on Aging. Ms. Howard discussed the importance of good sleep habits for seniors and offered tips on how to get a healthy night’s rest. Other upcoming educational programs include “Delta Air Lines: A Collection of Memories” by Cresswind resident Ron Stowe, a retired Delta pilot, on March 9th; “Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” and “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia” with Kim Franklin, program manager for the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia chapter (dates/times TBA); and CarFit, which promotes continued safe driving and mobility among older drivers (date/time TBA). Landscape Committee Spring Planting and Landscape Requests Per the Rules and Regulations information found on the Cresswind website, Landscape Requests are always required if you are: ● Removing existing trees and/or shrubs on your property ● Planting trees and/or shrubs that will significantly alter the existing landscape design. ● Installing new beds and/or extension of existing beds Landscape Requests are not needed/required if you are planting annuals or perennials in existing beds. Further, no request is needed if you are replacing dead shrubs with identical or similar plants. Please Note: An MTS work order and Landscape Request are NOT the same. If you are requesting the removal or installation of landscape materials via the work order system, you must submit a Landscape Request first and receive approval.

As a reminder, please refer to the Landscape area in the Cresswind Rules and Regulations Manual for a list of plants that are on the DO NOT plant list. Materials are placed on the do NOT plant list for one or more of the following reasons ● Their invasive nature ● Their size is impractical for our generally smaller yards ● Potential hazardous to people or animals because they are toxic or deemed poisonous

by Linda Furgerson

Extra caution should be used when selecting and planting ground covers. These can quickly get out of control and become invasive. Herb Gardening and Deer Resistant Barriers In case you haven’t noticed, Cresswind has a lot of natural areas, and along with those natural areas we have deer. While no plant is 100% deer resistant, there are some that are less-tasty than others. If you like herbs, there are some herbs you can plant that actually help dissuade deer from ravaging your landscape. Some that are highly recommended are:

Rosemary Sage Bee Balm Yarrow Lavender Tarragon Thyme Mint Parsley

Review the Do Not Plant List

Committee Corner

Horseradish Dill Anise Whether planted directly in your flower bed, planted in pots in the ground, or just in pots on your back porch, all of these can be used as potential deer-distractors and insect-repellants. Not only will your yard smell delicious, you can harvest the herbs at your leisure for your own use.

Resident News

By Rich St. George The Cresswind Community came through full force in December to help the students and families from Lyman Hall Elementary. We became aware of a depleted fund the school was managing to help students with some basic necessities. The need this year was even greater due to the flooding of two nearby mobile home parks displacing many families. Not only did they lose their homes but many of the basics were also ruined including personal care items, clothing, school supplies, etc. This does not even take into account COVID-19 and how many families cannot home-school if they lost their home.

The need was communicated and Cresswind delivered with over $4100 in donations! This is truly a giving community! Needless to say, the principal and counsellors at the school were floored with the donation! Karen Tapia (one of the school counselors) replied that the funds are starting to be used towards winter jackets, shoes, cleaning supplies, blankets and clothing amongst other items! She will continue to communicate with us how the funds are being used AND any future needs. Thank you Cresswind for always being there when needed!

CLL Traffic Safety and Road Use: A Resident Engagement Initiative By John Stevens

Based on true events… ”Holy S*%#T…that car was going way over 25 mph…didn’t even see that bicyclist coming around the parked MTScapes truck. Man, good thing those folks got up on the sidewalk out of the way…that car would have hit them trying to avoid the bike rider.” Many of us have witnessed similar occurrences here in Cresswind-LL. Some of us have even had our own ‘nearmiss’ experiences. And a few of us have actually been involved in an accident as a result of what others did or did not do while using our CLL roads. With good reason, CLL residents are becoming less and less tolerant of reckless or distracted driving, as well as of other unsafe or risky behaviors on our roads. No one wants to be the cause of someone getting hurt, nor do we want to be the one who suffers from someone else’s inattentiveness or poor judgment when using our roads. One consequence of living in a fully built-out active adult 940-home community is that more and more people are out-and-about walking, riding bicycles, meandering around CLL roads in golf carts, or simply driving their

Page 22

vehicles to-and-from the places they need to go. Add an increasing number of Amazon and Fed-X delivery trucks, more on-street parking by contractor vehicles, and the on-going routine presence of MTScapes trucks and equipment, and it seems to be increasingly prudent to be a bit more observant, courteous, and self-accountable for keeping ourselves and others safe while out-and-about in Cresswind. In keeping with the HOA Board’s vision of helping CLL become a ‘resident-centered’ community, they have sanctioned a ‘grassroots’ effort to bring about safer road use here in Cresswind. This initiative ‘kicked-off’ with a Resident Forum on ZOOM. Several residents offered their notions and ideas about how we can encourage safer road use by ALL who use CLL roads. Another Resident Forum on this topic will be scheduled soon, and will include an update of where things are at. If you are interested in adding your voice to this resident-centered effort, please plan on ZOOMing with us when the time comes, and/or contact me directly.

Resident News

By John Stevens Under the direction and supervision of the local DPH, two COVID vaccination events were held here at CresswindLL. Our own medically-trained and licensed CLL resident-volunteers delivered MODERNA 1st DOSE inoculations to more than 750 CLL residents aged 65+. They were assisted by more than 50 different CLL residentvolunteers who aptly handled registration and record-keeping requirements, and deftly shepherded their friends and neighbors through the various stations from ‘check-in’ to ‘check-out.’ The average time for residents to move from entry through registration through inoculation to sitting at the Waiting & Observation station was roughly 16 minutes. This is a great testament of the coordination and willingness to work together

March/April 2021

of our CLL resident-volunteers for the benefit of our CLL friends and neighbors. This was an incredibly rewarding, feel-good effort for both CLL volunteers as well as for our CLL friends and neighbors who, because of the CLL HOA Board and the efforts of our local DPH, could enjoy the convenience of getting a 1 st dose vaccination injection with minimal wait-time. Per the DPH, the MODERNA 2nd DOSE for these 750+ CLL residents will be scheduled in February. More details to come. To the question bantered around by the news media, “What will it take to get through this COVID crisis?”, I suggest that the community of CLL offers a partial yet critical answer, “It will take ALL of us.”

Thinking About Selling? Then We Need To Talk! Why? Please Take a Look Below: I use a targeted process to promote your listing to other agents who have potential buyers for your home.

I run paid social media ads to capture prospective buyer leads for your home. Click through rates have been phenomenal and acquire both e-mail addresses and phone numbers for follow up. The most recent ads have yielded an average of 3 new prospective buyer leads per day.

Your home will be a featured listing on my Cresswind at Lake Lanier Living website which I promote via paid social media ads: CresswindatLakeLanierLiving.com

I have a proprietary 55+ database of 7,500 people, who have an income level which allows them to purchase and who live within 25 miles of Cresswind to whom I target market your listing.

I send Just Listed post cards to all homes in Cresswind. So if “someone knows someone” looking to move here, they can pass it along.

I’ve been able to acquire the exclusive rights for Cresswind at Lake Lanier on three of the top four internet portals where folks search for 55+ communities. These portals provide me weekly leads of people interested in our community, plus I advertise your listing on each of them as well.

Private Communities Registry If your property is currently listed with a real estate broker, please disregard. It is not our intention to solicit the offerings of other real estate brokers. We are happy to work with them and cooperate fully.

What’s Happening

By Chuck Bridwell It was about this time last year that Cresswind Community Chorus was in full blown preparation for our annual Spring Music Spectacular. We had just completed a few weeks before, our Christmas Music Celebration with 135 singers and four sold out performances. Then our musical world stopped spinning . . . Covid-19 struck, and we have all experienced a year we will never forget. So, it has been a year since our chorus has sung together. We have greatly missed it. Music binds our minds and hearts together. We look forward to the time when we will once again join with our chorus musical family and prepare music for our whole community to enjoy.

As of this writing, we do not know yet when the ballroom will be available for rehearsals. But we are optimistically hoping to begin rehearsing again in April. If we can do that, we plan to present our first ever Summer Music Spectacular in July. That will be followed by a short break, and then we will get together again in September to prepare for our annual Holiday Music Celebration in December. Whenever this happens, we would be happy for new singers to join us. There is no audition. All you need is a desire to join us in singing great music and enjoying great fellowship.

Cooking Club News The Cooking Club continues to plan upcoming events once the Clubhouse is open. The Board has met to begin preparations for Cooking Classes covering a variety of topics communicated to us as a result of our past survey. A recommendation was received to offer a Cookbook Library. The kitchen does have space to accommodate this request. We will work out the details and communicate to the community. In case you are looking for an easy appetizer idea once entertaining resumes, we offer the following:

Cresswind Garden Club Greetings from the Common Ground, your neighborhood community garden! This past year was great for growing in the garden. Perhaps you noticed it in your home landscapes as well. And if you visited the Common Ground, which has an open invitation to all residents to come and enjoy, you would have seen prolific garden boxes full of vegetables and flowers, and the pollinator and perennial beds full of colorful blooms. It is pretty quiet in the garden now, but spring is not far and behind the scenes projects for the rest of the year are in the planning stages. A workshop is planned for the end of February and hopefully monthly speakers can start to resume as the Clubhouse continues to reopen. Watch your Daily Update for more information.

If you would like more up-to-date communication about all that is happening, then you are invited to join “Friends of the Garden.” This group includes all of the garden box holders and members of the Community Garden Club. It is for residents interested in gardening events, community garden projects, and happenings at the Serenity Garden. You will receive periodic newsletters informing you of all the many projects and events. To join Friends of the Garden, email Dave Rusk at dhrusk@msn. com. There are no dues to be a member of this. I would urge you on these beautiful sunny but chilly winter days to get out and take a stroll through the paths of our Serenity garden. You will be some of the first to notice when the early native plants start to break through, the harbingers of spring.

What’s Happening Genealogy Club

By Dave Dittmeier

When you were a lot younger, you had to fill out a form known as the SS-5 in order to work. Remember what it is? The SS-5 is generally known as an Application for A Social Security Number. This form requires several key pieces of information. One key piece of information the applicant needs to fill in all the names of the mother (to include maiden name) and father.

Genealogists run up against brick walls all the time during their research for their ancestors. This form is available through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Of course, there is a nominal fee but well worth the time and effort to obtain it. So, if your grandparents obtained SS numbers and you do not know the names of your great grandparents, or beyond, this is a valuable resource that just might break down that brick wall.

International Missions Club The Club has been very active even during these days of Covid. We had a very successful Trivia/ Auction in February, and are readying ourselves for the kickoff to spring, our Walk4Water – Brisas del Mar. If you participated in the autumn walk, you know how much fun we had in a safe way (https://www.wateratworkministry.org/post/walkingfor-water)! The spring walk will be expanded with a new three-mile walk option and other fun surprises. We have also identified our sister community in the Dominican Republic – Brisas del Mar (a very poor rural community near La Romana in the Dominican Republic). At the event, we will have a presentation on the community, and how Cresswind events like this are funding a new community water plant there!

Want to know how to obtain it? Join the Genealogy Club or contact one of the co-hosts. ~Happy Researching!

Our volunteers for coming events regularly meet either in person or via Zoom. Like everyone else, regular Club meetings will resume when we are enabled. Stay healthy!

Please set your calendars for a NEW activity to celebrate the coming of summer. On June 12th, we will host Cresswind’s inaugural Senior Prom! Why should the kids have all the fun? Take yourself back to the late 60’s/early 70’s, put on your best prom clothing, and get ready to dance the night away! The prom will take place outside on the Event Lawn so all residents will feel safe and welcome, and feature great food and entertainment. Cresswind Investment Club The Dow and S&P 500 set historic records last year and the NASDAQ had its best returns in 11 years. With 30 members doing research and seizing select opportunities every month, the Cresswind Investment Club (CIC) beat those records with a 33.33 percent return for 2020. Even though the clubhouse closed early in the year due to the pandemic, the members held monthly Zoom meetings at 1 pm the first Monday of the month. Four teams continue alternating presentations on their particular category of investment – large, mid, small cap stocks and “up and coming” companies – with recommendations for investing. Individuals provide brief updates and make recommendations on the club’s current investments every month. Motions follow and votes are cast. Successful investing relies on team effort and input.

Kayak Club Hello fellow kayakers, the days are getting longer with an occasional 60 degree afternoon that reminds us spring and summer activities on the water are coming soon. We hope everyone can enjoy Lake Lanier and the North GA rivers even more this year. Our Club has several things planned for this year, weather and COVID-19 permitting. Our proposed kayaking activities are: • Paddle with picnic/breakfast at Lake Lanier Point Park in May, • Community Kayak Day on June 19th, an orien tation to kayaking for newly interested folks, • Restart the Saturday Morning and Tuesday Sunset Meet Up outings, • Paddle with brunch at Skogie’s in September

Make & Take

Quilting News

I am so looking forward to a new year and returning to our clubhouse activities. With the Vaccination Clinics that we are having, I am hopeful that in a few months we can begin to resume normal activities. For the Make & Take Group, that means scheduling fun art projects and classes. Mary George will be happy to start back with her PopUp Card Classes once things open back up. This was an extremely popular class and I am so happy to be able to schedule her again. I will be happy to start another Calligraphy Class and get the Zentangle Group back together with a fun project. We have may talented people here who can offer classes. I hope that we can soon have a full schedule again. Meanwhile, stay safe, wear your mask, and get those vaccinations so we can all come together again and create Art!

The quilting group has not met since last year but we are all eager to begin meeting on each Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00pm when the Clubhouse opens again. When we resume our meetings, we hope anyone interested in quilting or would like to just come and visit to see what we are doing, will join us in the Arts and Crafts room.

My list of contacts for these classes is growing; if you have not already sent me your contact information please do at ZKathie54@gamil.com Page 42

What’s Happening

Model Railroad Club Cresswind has some 30+ residents in our club, and for the past year we have not been able to gather and show our skills to folks in the clubhouse. We hope that will change for the better this year. We have had some changes in leadership for 2021 with Brian Chapin stepping down to pursue travel by water around US and Canada. He will be back later, and we can still rely on his skills and advice via email. We thank Brian for his years of service and club leadership and wish him safe travels. New leadership includes Bill Edmondson and Jake Master…we look forward to serving and working together to spread the interest and skill level in our hobby.

March/April 2021

By Bill Edmondson

Considering the virus controls we have in place, club members have had a good bit of time at home alone, perfect for building or adding to home layouts and modules. Building a layout is rather complex and requires a significant amount of planning. You must consider breaking it down into manageable phases, such as benchwork, track, electricals, and scenery. Planning is a skill like any other…it can be learned…and it is the key to success in this hobby. With this in mind, we will share some of the progress members have made with the time they have enjoyed at home…

What’s Happening

Pickleball News It is a NEW YEAR! Hopefully that means with COVID vaccinations under way, we can get back to playing in larger leagues, organized tournaments, and resident/visitor groups. Also, Cresswind Pickleballers will have the opportunity to become familiar with the new rules (drop serves and no service lets) as well. Gary Foster is this year’s president and Brenda Newman is vice-president. Linda Potter is again treasurer and Wendy Warder is the recording secretary. Pat Burke, Gerry Cieply, and Don Johnson are members-at-large. Do not hesitate to “confront” us with questions, issues, or suggestions! The desire for heating pods between courts was one suggestion made recently.

By Pat Burke

Membership dues ($10 per member) should be in by March 1st. You can drop off a check in the pickleball mailbox in the lobby. Finally, it is great to see all the unofficial groups (“beer league”, ladies’ round robin, Monday night “newbies”) popping up. Reserve your courts early because the demand will increase with warmer weather and the emergence of this COVID FREE New Year

Our first tournament is the Clay Meyers Annual tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 20th. This will be open to all levels. Check your pickleball emails for more information to come.

PING PONG CLUB NEWS The Ping Pong Club continues to have open play at our regularly scheduled times on Tuesdays at 3:00pm and Thursdays at 3:00pm with the reopening of the Clubhouse on February 1st. Currently all players will need to be out of the clubhouse by 5:00pm meaning that all play must be completed by 4:45pm and the equipment stored away. Anyone arriving at clubhouse to play Ping Pong should inquire at front desk if a SIGNUP SHEET has been picked up already. If you are the first to arrive, go ahead and carry the Signup down to the Lanier Room. Everyone who arrives to play Ping Pong must then register on the Signup Sheet. The capacity of the Lanier Room currently is 20 people, NO EXCEPTIONS. This means that it is first come, first served. If you arrive a little later and someone else is ready to leave, then you will be allowed to stay as long as the capacity of the room is not exceeded. All players should familiarize themselves with the current guidelines required to enter and use the clubhouse facilities. Page 44

By Jim Cook

Until further notice ALL PING PONG PLAY WILL BE SINGLES ONLY! The current Ping Pong Club Board Members are as follows:

Jim Cook Kim Miller Russ Shussler Randy Garcia Alex Ford

Contact any of the Board Members for information about the Ping Pong Club.

Social Singles

By Elaine Vetter

It has been a quiet couple months for Social Singles but with spring temps coming soon we are planning several events. Our calendar includes a welcome social for those singles that are new to Cresswind, group get-togethers at the pavilion, and mid-day walks at local parks occasionally followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Also, those interested in kayaking on warmer days can add their name to the list and join the group for last minute outings. We are hoping we can host an inside social by mid to late March depending on when the clubhouse becomes available. If you are single and would like to get involved, have ideas on how we can connect and/or want more information, please access our link on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. We would love to have you join us. March/April 2021

CAMPER CORNER CLL RV Club By Linda Gillot 2021 travels are taking shape for the Cresswind RV Club, and it looks like we have another engaging year planned. We have decided, as the characters in The Wiz, just to put 2020 behind us and “ease on down the road.” Here is what we have on the 2021 calendar so far: April 11-23rd NATCHEZ TRACE. All plans are in place for this amazing multi-destination trip. June 4-6th HAPPY TOGETHER TOUR Hiawassee RV Campground. A night of oldies, but goodies, at the fairgrounds. September 26-October 3rd PANDION RIDGE (Orange Beach, AL) November 6 - 13th RAINBOW SPRINGS, FL In addition to the planned trips, we anticipate many fun “pop up” trips, which are places that individual members go independent of the Club. They let the Club know the details of their outing, and rigs can join them if they wish. If you live in Cresswind, you own an RV, and you would like to learn more about our dues-free club go to our website at https://sites.google.com/site/cllrvclub/ or email us at cll.rvclub@gmail.com. We always welcome new members to the CLL RV Club. We have seasoned travelers and we have newbies. All are welcomed and encouraged to join us.

What’s Happening Tennis News

The winter’s chill will soon be over and we can look forward to the warmer weather of spring. Many hardy tennis players braved the cold of winter, but we expect the courts to be a lot busier now that spring is around the corner. Everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy one of our Open Play sessions for women, men, or mixed. Just show up at the courts and you will be matched with a foursome. Watch for Harry’s monthly email for the current times of open play and upcoming events. Times are also listed on our website and posted on the bulletin board near the tennis courts.

Our fall Cresswind resident tennis league was a great success and a spring league will be starting in March. As of this writing, we have not yet determined our teams or captains. Watch for notices in the Daily Update and come out to cheer your fellow Cresswind players.

By Sandy Barmak A survey was sent out in February to our tennis club members to evaluate what programs and events they would like to see us sponsor. We are also looking for ideas to engage more tennis club members in our various activities. Any Cresswind resident who is interested in becoming more involved in the tennis club is welcome to reach out to one of our board members listed on our website. To stay up to date on tennis events check out our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite.com/cwtennis. You can also contact our president, Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com.

Bill Papciak and his team of volunteers held some clinics in February to get us ready for more active play. More clinics are planned for the spring. All Cresswind residents are welcome and the clinic dates and times will be announced in the Daily Update.

Ladies Golf Club “Sometimes being with your friends and golfing is all the therapy you need.” The Ladies Golf Club is ready to tee it up for another season of golf. We play every Thursday, April to November. Tee times usually start at 10:00 am. Due to the closing of Chattahoochee Golf course for renovations, this season we will be playing golf at Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club.

By Pat Morris

a neighbor who is new to Cresswind and may not be aware of our Club, invite them to join you for our Kick Off meeting. We hope to see you on the links! Contact Pat Morris if you have questions; plmorris14@gmail.com, 470-290-8708.

We welcome all levels of golfers, including beginners. Currently, we have over 50 ladies on our membership list. We have women who play 9 holes and others who play 18. Our goal is to have fun and make new friends! Please join us for our Kick Off meeting on Wednesday, March 10th at 10:30 am, to sign up and learn more about our upcoming golf season. What’s Happening Cresswind Veterans Club Our Veterans Club membership currently stands at about 140 residents strong, with a couple of new members joining since our last report. We are always welcoming new members who wish to support our efforts and aid area veterans in need. Dues are only $10 per year. If you have not paid for 2021, please do so now…drop payment in our club mailbox at the back of the clubhouse lobby. Any questions should be referred to Kim Koenig at kekoldman@gmail.com Inspite of the challenges we face with COVID-19 19 and controls in place, we continue to provide financial support to area veterans in need…we have served three such vets in the last couple months. We also continue providing our annual veteran scholarship program to UNG. Most of these efforts are handled via phone and email without delay. Our Hospice program continues, although visitations are primarily via Zoom; Hall Co postponed all training for new hospice volunteers several months ago (due to virus concerns), so we have

a few members waiting to be trained and become eligible for visitations. And our court mentoring program has seen some delays, with court sessions postponed as well…again, efforts on our part are primarily by phone or Zoom as needed. We have also had some changes to our Board. Pat Criste and Amy DeVillez are leaving the Board due to health reasons; we thank them for all their hard work and dedication to our vets. They will be missed and we wish and pray the best for them. With the clubhouse beginning to open again, we hope to see more club activity. The Board met mid-February to plan future events, and one you may see soon (March) is the raffle for a week stay in a beach house at Hilton Head! Please watch for details as they will be announced via email and the Cresswind Daily Updates. Stay safe and healthy… hope to see you soon!

Cresswind Bowling League The Cresswind Bowling League continues the 2020-2021 bowling season at Stars and Strikes in Buford. There are currently 12 teams competing this season. The season consists of two halves of 14 weeks for each half with the winners of each half bowling against each other at the end of the season for the championship. The second half of the season will end on April 14, 2021, with a roll off of the first and second half winners. The Pin Heads, consisting of Charlene Shambach, Andy Hampton, John Shambach, and Greg Pike, have already qualified for the roll off by finishing in 1st place for the first half of the season. Also, anyone interested in bowling should consider getting on the substitute list where you may get called upon to bowl when a regular member is unavailable to bowl. Being a substitute is a great way to ease March/April 2021

What’s Happening Writers in the Wind: Cresswind Creative Writing Group

By Laurie Homa

Writers in the Wind is a group of people who love creative writing. We are a small group of published authors, a want to be or two, and those who just enjoy writing for fun. We challenge ourselves with monthly writing assignments plus receive and give insightful feedback. We schedule some workshops every year with published authors and writing coaches. Many of our members have kept themselves busy working on books they hope to finish, start, or publish. Paul Fischer has kept a journal of short stories having to do with Covid-19 and all things resulting from the 2020 shut down. He has added great humor and truth to a difficult period. We all look forward to March when we plan to meet in person again. There are many newcomers to Cresswind. We welcome you and invite you to join our fun group to sharpen your creative writing skills.
