Kitti’s Corner
By Kitti Kleinedler
2020 has been a challenging year, to say the least, and patience has grown thin and expectations for returning to normal are all over the board. I have thought so many times, now is when I would really like a “crystal ball” to see what the next six months will bring, so I could assure all of you that life will return to the active-adult, fun-filled existence that you have enjoyed here. Since I have not found that charm yet, I can only tell you that I am as anxious as all of you to get back to life as we knew it pre-COVID-19. The Board and I are working (within the guidelines that we must follow) to revive the lifestyle you are all waiting for. And when amenities open, things may be a little different. Your cooperation and patience will be essential to adjusting to these changes. Nothing lasts forever, as we all have learned. We will tweak and relax restrictions as soon as allowable while adhering to the mandates from the State. We are all in this together and we really do have the same goals. I saw this meme. . . “The year 2020 is like standing on the curb and looking both ways, then getting hit by an airplane.” And boy hasn’t it been! But we are in this together and we are # Cresswind Strong. In spite of anything and everything, always #Cresswind Strong.”

Committee Corner Frequently Asked Questions for the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) • When do I need to request approval for something I want
to do outside of my home? What is the general guidance on requesting approval from the ARC for a project?
Almost all changes to the exterior of a home at Cresswind require ARC approval in advance of starting the work. In almost every case, you should not start work until you receive written approval from the Community Manager. The Cresswind at Lake Lanier Rules and Regulations Manual states, “Any modification, alteration, or addition of ornamentation of any type or size to a home in Cresswind, that is, anything that can be seen by you, a neighbor, or pedestrians requires advance approval from the ARC. This includes statues, metal or concrete sculptures, bird baths, flower pots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc.” I would say this is pretty all-inclusive, and to be on the safe side you should reach out to the ARC for clarification if you have any questions on whether or not approval is required. • How does the ARC process work, and what is the process for
closing out an ARC request?
The ARC process starts when you submit your request for approval for a project to the Cresswind Community Manager at CWManager@Cresswindatll.com or to the Clubhouse front desk. These requests are logged and sent to our ARC Chairman, who divvies the requests out to one of the ARC members (there are 9 members total including the Chairman). Your assigned ARC member will get in touch with you to discuss/review your request. This phase may require a visit to your residence. The ARC makes every effort to do this within one week of the ARC receiving your request, although we have a goal of 30 days and a limit of 60 days to do so. Once this review is complete, the ARC member makes a recommendation to the ARC Chairman to approve or deny your request. The Chairman sets up an electronic vote (e-vote) on the request and a majority vote decides the result. The results of the e-vote are transmitted to the Cresswind Community Manager, who sends an official approval or denial letter to the resident. Hopefully, it is an approval letter, and if it is, it is important for the resident to keep a copy of this letter in their home file to answer any potential future questions or in the event they sell their home. Once an approval letter is received the work can commence! At some point, when the work is complete, the assigned ARC member will need to close the request. This may be especially important to a homeowner if a security deposit is being held by the front office. It is the responsibility of the assigned ARC member to drive by, schedule a visit, or request pictures of the completed project to determine if the work was completed in accordance with the submitted request and approval letter. Once this is done, the assigned ARC member can close out the ARC request in the ARC tracking system. The ARC does our best to do this in a timely manner, but given all the time constraints from living in an active adult community and life in general, this can take some time. However, the homeowner is not “on the hook” for this, just the assigned ARC member. • Do you recommend discussing my request with an ARC
member before I turn in my request?
This depends on the complexity and/or uniqueness of your request, but it is always a good idea to take advantage of an ARC members knowledge and experience for your new project.
Page 6 | The Waterfall | July/August
By Debbie Seymour
A quick discussion with an ARC member can save you time, disappointment, and sometimes, expense down the road.
• Do I need to ask for approval if I am painting my house exactly
the same colors?
Yes, you do. The Cresswind Community Manager uses your request for approval as a means of tracking when you last painted your house, so it is important for you to submit this request. However, once your request is submitted, you can immediately start painting. You will receive an approval letter from the Cresswind Community Manager, but you do not need to wait to receive the approval letter before you begin. • Do I need to ask for approval if I am painting my house the
same colors, except for the door and/or shutters?
Yes, you do. Since you are requesting a new color for the door and/or shutters you must wait to receive approval before you begin. Remember, the options on changing the door or shutter colors from a prescribed Kolter color scheme are limited to a few select colors. • I am interested in staining/painting the sidewalk in front of my
house and my driveway. What do I need to know?
I’m sorry, but the sidewalks in Cresswind are considered to be common property and cannot be altered, colored, or changed in any way. This means you cannot and will not get permission to stain or paint your sidewalk.
You can receive permission to stain your driveway. However, there are some stringent requirements for this work: driveways in Cresswind may be stained using only one approved installation contractor, Concrete Resurfacing Products Inc., and the driveway may be stained only one approved color, Concrete. You must submit an ARC request for this work. In addition, the Cresswind at Lake Lanier Rules and Regulations Manual states, “The resident bears the responsibility to enter into a contract with Concrete Resurfacing Products Inc. for the performance of the work. Neither the Developer, CA Board, nor any other Cresswind LLC entity shall be responsible nor liable for the appearance of the final driveway staining nor any damages which may occur.” As with most ARC requests, once the work is complete, an ARC member will visit the residence to review the results of the driveway staining. Since this is a driveway, the resident may not be contacted by the ARC, since an ARC member can just do a “drive-by” to check the final result. • I would like permission to widen my driveway. What do I need
to do?
I’m afraid that there is nothing you can do because driveways may not be widened or lengthened in Cresswind. • Do I need to ask for approval to install garden edging around
my gardens and front beds?
Yes, you do. Garden edging is not specifically covered by Cresswind at Lake Lanier Rules and Regulations Manual, but in cases not specifically covered by the guidelines, the ARC will consider whether the request meets the general principles of Cresswind’s aesthetics and make their decision based on that criteria.

Health & Fitness Committee
The Health & Fitness Committee had our first Zoom meeting on May 11th with our Board of Directors liaison Landy Johnson. After we worked out the initial kinks, we were able to discuss the reopening of our outdoor pool, indoor pool, and fitness center. We are grateful to Landy for providing us with communications sent to the Board from Cresswind residents regarding opening the above amenities. She also provided us with the guidelines so we will be in compliance with federal, state, and local safety issues. The Board has a multitude of decisions to make that will affect all Cresswind residents and we thank them for their time and energy to keep us safe. The way each of us reacts to this re-opening is very individual depending on our own medical issues, and anxiety level regarding transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Anxiety can be created by any situation that heightens your perception of danger. This fear and vulnerability can manifest itself in many ways including irritability, difficulty concentrating,

muscle tension, and difficulties sleeping. One of the best ways to manage anxiety is to incorporate exercise into your daily life. The benefits have a positive direct impact on the physiological and psychological factors associated with apprehension and concern. At this particular point in time, Cresswinders have become very creative and many residents are walking, biking, playing pickleball, tennis, gardening, hiking and doing home projects. Movement on any level reduces muscular tension, releases pent up frustrations, and metabolizes adrenaline in the bloodstream more rapidly, thereby creating a calmer state of being. Events happen in life that we have no control over and some of us have steeper hills to climb than others. What you can control are your attitudes and beliefs even in the most unfortunate of circumstances. Be kind to yourself and others. You never know what road and journey someone else is traveling. Keep moving and stay safe Cresswind.

Committee Corner Landscape Committee • Planting Restrictions: Why We Have Them
By Linda Furgerson
Tree/shrub size restrictions
The Landscape Committee receives a lot of feedback, questions, and comments about two specific areas of plant restrictions
No one wants a rather tall tree or shrub falling on their home or their neighbor’s. Nor do they want the roots invading their foundation or waterlines. And as a community, we don’t want trees or shrubs that cause issues to sidewalks or streets.
1. Do not plant list a. Why do we have one b. How are plants identified 2. Height/size restrictions – why do we have these types of restrictions The simple answer to both questions is safety. Safety of: our residents; guests; our fur-babies, and most importantly, safety of our homes. Do Not Plant List Materials listed on the do NOT plant list are placed on this list for one or more of the following reasons • Their invasive nature • Their size is impractical for our generally smaller yards • Potential for hazard to people or animals because they are toxic or deemed poisonous What does invasive mean? Basically means stuff that’s not native to our environment is planted and before we know it, this non-native plant has taken over and is out of control. Perfect example of this would be kudzu. Kudzu was introduced in around 1935 as a way of conserve the soil, however it did the job a little too well. Left uncontrolled, kudzu has been known to engulf acres and acres of land, including swallowing up homes in its path. Once established, kudzu is almost impossible to eradicate permanently. Not that anyone has asked, or would ever ask to plant kudzu, there are several plants who have similar capabilities. Bamboo is good example. While it is lovely in a natural setting, it is not something you want to plant in your yard. Those 2-3 shoots of bamboo that you innocently plant in your yard soon become a forest that extends into your neighbor’s yard. And like kudzu, once established, bamboo is almost impossible to eradicate and literally take years and great expense to complete. Many of you have come from other regions and want to bring “a little piece of home” with you and plant in your yard. Unfortunately, what grows well and looks nice “back home,” can actually become an out-of-control monster here due to our potentially more temperate climate. We have also received some requests to plant potential hazardous plants, plants that come with poison warnings. Out of precaution for our residents and our landscaping staff, we will deny the use of these plants. For more information on invasive plants refer to Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council at https://www.gaeppc.org/list/ or https://efotg.sc.egov.usda.gov/references/public/GA/ Georgia_List_of_Exotic_and_Invasive_Plant.pdf Page 16 | The Waterfall | July/August
We limit the size and location of trees or shrubs for numerous reasons. Although safety is the primary concern, other reasons include: • The tree could become too large for the neighborhood when it has fully grown. • Trees can be safety concerns for homes and residents. Some tree types are more likely to snap or blow over in a storm. We do have high winds in our area. Fast-growing trees often snap in high winds causing significant damage. Additionally tall trees can topple during high winds and fall on nearby homes or uproot significant portions of yards. • Some trees require additional maintenance and are just not suitable due to these additional maintenance concerns. This could include additional trimming, or surface cleaning from falling fruit/berries, or other droppings. • Trees increase liability concerns. Trees with extensive root systems that are hydrophilic in nature (like the root systems of willow trees) have the potential to ruin community and private property (home foundations, sidewalks, roads, or sewer and water lines) • We all want to be good neighbors so trees and shrubs must be planted within property lines so that at full-canopy (maturity) they do not overhang or infringe on neighboring properties. • Trees or shrubs cannot block or obstruct line-of-sight for traffic areas, including intersections or road access. Any tree or shrub that blocks the view of on-coming traffic must be either trimmed or removed. • Shrubs planted near or around the foundation should be planted no closer than one-half the size of the plant at full canopy. Example: shrubs that reach a 3 foot canopy should be planted no closer than 1 ½ from the foundation. Shrubs should also be kept trimmed away from the house. This allows for light and air movement and also helps to prevent mold, dampness, and reduces the likelihood of termites. • Plants or shrubs can be no taller than 12 inches above the front windows or porch. Plants blocking the windows could prevent easy exit from the home in the case of an emergency, or access by first-responders. • Size and placement of shrubs around the foundation is regulated because of the same factors as trees. The root systems can cause damage to the foundation and/or waterlines. • In Cresswind drainage is extremely important when installing landscape materials. Trees and shrubs cannot be planted in an area where they would impede, restrict, or prevent the natural flow of water or drainage. If this occurs, the homeowner will be held responsible for resolution/ mediation of all issues, including damage to neighboring properties or common areas. In summary, the majority of our guidelines/regulations are in place because of safety-related concerns. Please keep these in mind when planting or selecting your landscape plants.

Marina Committee Update
By Warren Lange
Our Cresswind Marina Committee (CMC) has been functioning relatively normally after making some adjustments to handling things in face of the COVID 19 situation. The April meeting was cancelled due to the sudden shutdown due to COVID 19. Since then meetings have been conducted using Zoom. The committee members for 2020 include: Warren Lange Chairman Vickie Gassman Secretary Randy Garcia Member at Large Gene Evans Member at Large Rod Quisenberry Member at Large The mission of the CMC is to effectively and efficiently oversee the management of the Cresswind Marina Exclusive Common Area. Bob Rivers has been designated as our liaison with the Board. This has been very helpful as it has improved communications
between the committee and Board. At this time, all of the Kolter owned slips have been sold. The CMC is working closely with our liaison as needed to assist on matters related to the upcoming final transition of the marina to Cresswind. The CMC is also working closely with the Board on possible changes to the anchoring system that keeps Dock D in position. In the past year, the ramp has slipped off of the sidewalk several times requiring dock repositioning. An area of concern is that there were some losses of property from the marina at the end of April. A CMC work group was established in May to make recommendations on measures which can help with dock security. This group has made some initial recommendations for short term low cost projects to deter theft. They are continuing to look at possible longer term higher technology proposals. Should anyone have questions or want to discuss subjects related to the marina, please contact any of the CMC members.
The President’s View
Hello Fellow Cresswind Residents – It has now been well over four months that we have all been confronting the COVID-19 Pandemic. We have found ourselves battling an invisible enemy, which has wreaked havoc on our lives and our lifestyles. These times have been most challenging for all of us. As we collectively move forward towards our new normal, let us not forget COVID-19 is still with us so we still need to observe the rules of the road.
As I look ahead, I envision the elimination of the restrictions and requirements we have had to follow as well as the revival of our Clubs, Activities and community friendships that have been put on hold all too long. I believe we are at a point where we need to recommit our energies personal strengths to ourselves, each other and our Community to move forward with all diligence. For us, Time is one of our the most precious commodities which we wish to enjoy and we should spend it wisely. Walk – Talk – Get Involved – Live the most fulfilling years of our lives, and let’s look ahead together. Back lawn gatherings – concerts behind the Clubhouse – Chorus Practice – Card Games – Exercise Classes and just plain enjoying each other and our amenities, knowing that our lives were on hold for all too long. For me, I have missed the activities I would participate in – the conversations and laughter, the freedom to move about freely and take day trips whenever I chose to. I will not miss the never-ending grind of digesting COVID-19 Regulations and the Requirements which was all too Page 18 | The Waterfall | July/August
consuming. I will encourage all of my fellow Cresswinders to be as active as they can, embrace the lives we came here to live, cultivate new friendships, assist our neighbors, become more involved in Cresswind and our surroundings and enjoy our best of our great Community. It is my expectation that in the not too distant future we will have complete ownership along with the care and control of our entire community as the final home within Cresswind goes through financial closing and the turnover of our community takes place. There will be opportunities to implement some changes we have anticipated. However, as we assume complete control of Cresswind at Lake Lanier, we need remember we are now completely responsible for our destiny and actions. We are well prepared to do that. Our strengths and fortitude have brought us this far – our energies and commitment will carry us forward. I am therefore calling upon our entire community to move forward together to address our mutual interests and concerns in a healthy and collaborative manner. Let each of us commit in our own way to make Cresswind be the best it can be and fulfill each of our hopes and aspirations. Get involved – Make Something Happen – Join a Club or Committee – Exercise - Volunteer – Smile, Rekindle old Friendships, Establish New Ones, for these are the best years of our lives and we should not let them slip away. Regards, Dan Gershkowitz

Driving - A Precious Possession
When my daddy took me to get my learner’s permit, he made me swear a solemn oath in the Driver’s License Office parking lot that I would never let my mother drive again if I could at all help it. He said “I know you will be in school and cannot always be there for her but please try!” I knew very well why he made me swear! Bless her, her car was scratched, dinged and well-worn by her driving “skills.” Mother gracefully and happily turned over her car to me and planned errands and appointments around when my Dad or I could take her. My mother had never been a confident driver. For her, turning over that chore was easy. Now that I am looking forward to my own grandchildren driving, the landscape looks very different!
Today’s transportation options offer more independence and spontaneity. Uber, Lyft and GoGo Grandparent are available in Hall County. I am very partial to ITN Lanier because it is my agency; it is a home grown nonprofit, volunteer based, affordable and more fun because you get to know your drivers. I have seen many friendships form between riders and drivers and have made some wonderful new friends myself !
A common feeling with the loss of your own driving is the dread of being a burden on others. None of us want to impose on family or friends. As good neighbors, we want to help each other, but sometimes find that good boundaries are hard to
keep when we get wrapped up in trying to meet the needs of others.
The ITN Lanier structure removes the stress of either becoming a “burden” or being “burdened” by blurred boundaries. Each ITN ride is set by the ITN Dispatcher, tracked with our specialty software and riders pay small fees to the agency. ITN sets the parameters of each ride so that the driver and rider can just enjoy a nice trip together. Business gets done and feelings don’t get hurt. I describe it as “Organized Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” The structure we set helps everyone feel comfortable helping, and being helped.
ITN Lanier can be booked Night and Day, 7 days per week for any Hall County resident who is over 60 or visually Impaired, to any Hall County destination. No cash or cards are needed – billing is done by invoice at the end of each month. No hassles and fewer worries. Rides can be taken for ANY Reason, not just medical. We take folks to church, parties, dinners, lunches, and all kinds of personal care locations like hair salons.
ITN Lanier responded to COVID-19 by developing an Errand Service – we can pick up and deliver groceries and prescriptions for ITN members. Please call us today to see what we have to offer. 678-696-0360. Our drivers are ready to help! May You Drive Well into the sunset, and May You Always Pass Through our Round Abouts going the Right Way, Dana Chapman, ITN Lanier Executive Director

Cresswind Donations Continue and Do not Stop! The second week of March was the beginning of a change in our lives like no other. We found our lives changing quickly yet so fortunate to be safe and not go hungry. That is not the case for many of our Hall County residents. That week, I decided to start a food donation from my front porch.... yes, right here in the neighborhood. So, from that point until this moment, 3460 Great Oak Drive SW began the collection point for food items and donation checks going to either South Hall Food Pantry or Family Promise of Hall County. Sue McCleese, a Cresswind neighbor, is a volunteer at South Hall. Each week, she and her husband Ernie would pick up the food and deliver to the Food Pantry. I and a volunteer at Family Promise handled their food deliveries. After a couple of weeks of seeing that everyone was going to need protective masks, Susan Dodd and Joanie put their heads together to figure out how this could be a community experience. Susan and her magical sewer neighbors ran with the idea of making masks. They were not selling the handmade masks but were asking for donations to be made to one of the Food Pantries. It was a match made in heaven as everyone was dropping food and checks and three months later, we have donated, from the porch, over 4000 food items and over $4700
in checks from donations and mask sales. As they say “It takes a village.” We have so many generous residents and we should all be proud that we have been able to help feed hundreds of families during this difficult time.
The Food Pantry Donation Center remains on Joanie’s porch around the clock for all who wish to drop off donations. Susan Dodd and her group are still making and “selling” masks also (they have also donated 100s to nurses and medical personnel). On Mother’s Day, 100 masks were gifted to our local assisted living home. A huge thank you to the generosity of our Cresswind neighbors. Together we do can do great things for our county and neighbors. These tough months have shown what can be done if we pull together as a team for the greater good.

Last month, many residents volunteered to assist Family Promise pack and deliver 1000 boxes of food here in Hall County. Residents donated over 1000 food articles and many dollars to assist this effort as well. Family Promise is excited to be so close to us and is looking forward to many volunteer partnerships.

Cresswind Donates Again and Again! By Sue McCleese
South Hall Community Food Bank was started in 2003. With numerous volunteers from the community and various churches, it is run by donations only from caring individuals, grants, and businesses. The food bank serves the community of Hall County, but during the Covid-19 crisis we have not turned anyone away who is in need and hungry. A good number of the clients are over 55 and many are grandparents raising grandchildren.
some point the supplies will be easier to get, but right now we need your help. If you know of anyone who is in need of food, please know that the hours are Monday 4-6, Thursday 10-12, and Saturday 10-12. The address is 4211 Walnut Street, Oakwood - behind the Police station and park.
During this Covid-19 crisis, it is apparent that this food pantry is in greater need of supplies as the number of folks in need has greatly risen. When available, food from the food banks can be purchased for very little money. We order from Atlanta Community Food Bank and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, but we have had our orders declined or received very little. With the need being so great, we have reached out to the community of Cresswind to ask for donations of food and money. Cresswind has come through time and time again, but the need still remains. Adventures in Dining – Gourmet Dinner Group By Karen Silverthorn
Cresswind’s Gourmet Dinner Group continues in planning stage over the summer. Tentatively, our next ‘sit-down’ meal will be October 3, 2020. The other meals for this season are ‘scheduled’ for Nov. 7, 2020; Feb. 6, 2021 and March 6, 2021. In the meantime, the Steering Committee is reviewing menus for the 2020-2021 season. Feel free to submit menus for consideration to any of the Dinner Group Steering Committee members: Pam Papciak, Regina Fuller, Mary Quisenberry, Ann Horne, Judy Brannan and Susan Kooistra. Currently there are over 160 members on the Dinner Group roster. But if you are new to Cresswind or just wish to try a different group, anyone can join at any time during the year. Dinner Group does not collect any dues but annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Our members gather four times a year to enjoy great gourmet meals while meeting new neighbors and making friends. The Gourmet Dinner Group differs from a casual or neighborhood gathering. Host houses put time and thought into making their ‘tablescapes’ elegant, appropriately themed and memorable for their guests. Menus are chosen by the Steering Committee that are more elaborate and often use unusual or challenging ingredients. There are always a total of 4 couples/pairs of people at each host home. Singles are welcomed provided they find another single to pair with. Each couple/pair is assigned part of the meal to prepare. For each meal, all recipes are provided. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses on the same evening, each using the same recipes and making the same courses. All food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. If you are interested in joining, email the coordinator directly (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the Gourmet Dinner Group email list. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy a delicious gourmet meal while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

RV Club By Karen Silverthorn
Hitting the road in an RV is a great way to social distance and still travel! No wonder RV sales and rentals have increased in popularity in the last few months. Cresswind’s RV Club has approximately 54 members and 29 rigs. We take a break from group campouts over the summer, but have two great trips scheduled for the fall. Cresswind R.V.’ers can join us in Townsend and Cades Cove, TN Sept 23rd through 30th. Then we travel south to Orange Beach, AL November 15th through 22nd in search of some warmer days. Check the R.V. Club’s website (https://sites.google.com/ site/cllrvclub) for more detail on scheduled trips, RV storage, meeting minutes, and campout pictures. Reminder to all members, please notify us via the Gmail account whenever you book any of these trips! Do you have an R.V.? Let us know if you are interested in joining the RV Club. Please email: cll.rvclub@gmail.com. The Steering Committee welcomes comments and trip suggestions for 2021. Karen Silverthorn & Brenda Crosby – Co-Leaders

Cooking Club Update By Lisa Giblin
It is no surprise that the Pandemic has dramatically impacted our ability to offer large Indoor social events. The Cooking Club Board has continued to meet to discuss our options for the future. We are attempting to balance the safety requirements of our members with an enjoyable social experience.
To that end, we plan on scheduling a Garden event to take full advantage of our beautiful Community Garden. It will be a cocktail hour with wine punch, party pack appetizers, and seating under the trees in the Serenity garden. The date will be determined based on the Clubhouse kitchen opening. In August, we will have a welcome change of pace, something new that we have never had at Cresswind called The Taste of the States. We will divide up the United States into five different regions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Northwest and Southwest. This event will be held outside with five different tents to represent food from each area of the country. Each area will have two offerings to round out the menu for a full, unique meal. We are looking forward to sharing new taste sensations with friends and neighbors.
Last, but not least, we are developing a Cooking School class program. A survey will be generated to ensure we focus the schedule on the priority topics of our members. More information to follow. We look forward to getting back together and enjoying safe social interactions.
Small Band News
By John Kelley Cresswind small bands are maintaining social distancing but that does not mean they are not making themselves heard. There have been porch concerts (jazz and ukulele), Internet Zoom gatherings, social distanced ukulele jam sessions, collaboration on recording and compiling music by the Out Past Nine band, video presentations of folk music from Mary McDonald and a “mixed bag” of video productions offered by the duo of Brian Olson and John Kelley. You can find links to samples of Cresswind small band play lists on Cresswind at LL Neighbors Facebook page. We all hope to be making live music - up close and personal - for you soon.

We have the Art Quilter, Mary Parsons, who never disappoints us with her unique designs, this one is Sailor’s Delight; the Athletic Quilter, Marsha Low, who had the challenge to display some of Tom’s T-shirts from over 30+ years of running and thousands of miles, each T-shirt bringing lots of wonderful memories; Pam Timm, who picks up more of the pieces and creates for others; the Traditional, Bonnie May, who is “blasting her stash beautifully so she can buy more ” ; Unfinished projects UFO, Cheryl Stewart, completing after seven years; just in case quilters, Eleanor and Evelyne have been planning ahead making items for the Holiday Bazaar, Koozies and Curling Iron covers. Many of the members continued making masks and working on their own projects and in their communities; others are taking time to learn a new technique or piece of equipment. We welcome any resident to join us. Contact Evelyne at hybiscus5@outlook.com for information. We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Arts and Craft room. Leave it to the Social Singles to find ways to stay connected with each other while the clubhouse is closed and social distancing is in place! Thanks to ZOOM, Fred Pescitelli has kept us connected through the threetimes-weekly conversations with each other. ZOOM: The Georgia & South Carolina Coasts and Lake Tahoe have been two of our favorite “trips.” For a change of pace, Larry introduced us to Virtual Wine Tasting and we are moving from the whites to the reds and waiting to see what he will come up with next. Greetings from the Garden!
By Sarah Galshack The song says “June is bustin’ out all over” and that certainly holds true for Common Ground, your Cresswind Community Garden. June in Georgia is when shrubs and perennials are at their most beautiful. Everyone is invited to the garden to admire the gladioli, daylilies, dahlias, butterfly bushes, daisies, and many more varieties that are in peak bloom. And while you are there, be sure to also look at the fabulous vegetables that our gardeners have worked hard to coax out of their raised beds. Tomatoes and peppers and squash, oh my! One new addition to Common Ground for you to enjoy is the Butterfly Nursery. Curious? It’s very interesting, so come check it out. The Serenity Garden which is next door and although very new already has trails and over 45 species of native trees, shrubs and perennials. Again, you are invited to stroll the trails and have a look. In the garden this summer we hope to be able to add several benches, rain barrels, additional plantings, etc. How do we accomplish this? With donations from our Cresswind neighbors through the Cresswind Community fund, or to the Garden club. We look forward to making the Gardens an even more enjoyable place for our neighbors.

Creating Bowls of Love
By Lisa Phifer These bowls were painted by ladies from Cresswind for the Georgia Mountain Food Bank luncheon (Empty Bowl luncheon)! Every year, the food bank holds a soup/salad/ dessert luncheon/auction to raise money to supply food to needy people in Hall County. With the purchase of lunch, everyone gets to choose a free bowl-which reminds them through the year of empty bowls that need filling. They need 1,000 bowls, and this has been easily done in past years by having “paint parties” at large businesses, churches, etc., but as we all know, 2020 has been different and difficult. So, I thought it would be fun to host a few ladies and paint a few bowls and I have had the BEST TIME! So, after delivering the first 31 bowls to be fired, I have decided to continue through the summer. Each person who paints a bowl donates $12.50, which goes to the food bank to replenish supplies. You do not have to be creative, know how to paint or “color in the lines”- just show up and have fun! For scheduling times, email me at Lisadawnphifer@gmail.com

Kayak Club
By Dick Osborne We are more than halfway through 2020, and the kayak season has been unusual, to say the least. But everything about 2020 since March has been unusual for everyone. When The Waterfall for March-April was published, we had four key events scheduled for this year. One has already been rescheduled twice, one has been modified, and two are still “TBDs.” Here’s the update – courtesy of the Corona virus and all the changes it has brought on us. • The Community Kayak Day has been tentatively rescheduled from May 16th to August 22nd. We hope that we will still be able to provide this great opportunity for new and old Cresswind residents to try kayaking. • When you read this edition of The Waterfall, we hope that the club’s Spring membership meeting will have occurred, with some modifications to comply with State, local, and HOA guidelines. Even how we conducted the semi-annual lottery for vertical kayak slots may have been modified to meet limitations on group meetings. • We hope that the Skogies Paddle, scheduled for September 12th, and the Fall membership meeting on November 12th, will occur as planned. Watch the Cresswind LL Daily Updates for revised dates and times! Still, our members have been enjoying Lake Lanier.

Cresswind fisherman may not have been doing much socializing during this pandemic, but that has not kept them from making visits to have up close and person encounters with the fish in our beautiful Lake Lanier. What’s Happening
Cresswind Veterans Club By Bill Edmondson
What a difference a few months make! Back in January and February, we were very busy aiding veterans in Hall County, inducting new board members for 2020, and planning for and holding our biggest and best fund-raising event of the year…our annual “Casino Night”!
Now, with the virus impact and controls we must follow to keep safe; things are much slower…but we have not stopped. Although the Northeast Georgia Health System has canceled all volunteer training and activities of our Hospice visitations until further notice, we have continued to provide financial assistance to help veterans in need; we have continued our mentoring to veterans in the court system through video conferencing; and we have recently provided an additional three bicycles to veterans needing basic local transportation. And although we have not worked out all the details yet, we are planning our next raffle…win a week’s stay at a lovely vacation house on Hilton Head, September 12th-19th! Details to be released this month in Cresswind Updates emails.
Tennis Club By Sandy Barmak
May brought good news to the Tennis Club. After having been closed for almost two months, the courts opened for reservations only play following all the guidelines set by the CDC and Governor Kemp’s regulations for social distancing and other precautions. May was also the month that saw our deteriorating and cracked courts finally repaired and resurfaced. Thanks to our HOA Board for having this important work done. Our round robin Open Play resumed in June. It provided a good opportunity for new residents to come out and meet other tennis players in our community. Naturally, social distancing, CDC and government guidelines for health and safety continue to be observed and everyone is expected to act responsibly. At this time, the COVID 19 pandemic has put a damper on the many social events we had planned for this season. We
Cresswind Ladies Golf Club
By Pat Morris The Cresswind Ladies Golf Club is in full swing! The ladies got back on the golf course in the middle of May. Each Thursday we meet at Chattahoochee golf course to play nine holes of golf. The word is out that we are a fun bunch of women that enjoy each other’s company and golf. We have added six new players this year and average 20-24 players each Page 44 | The Waterfall | July/August
Our board continues planning for future events as our economy begins to re-open, so stay tuned for latest updates as they come available. We look forward to our next meeting to keep our members informed on the latest veteran support, and to say “Hi!”
I want to leave you with a brief ‘success’ story which occurred a few months ago…we assisted a veteran who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2017, and as of December 2019 was placed in hospice care, probably in his final months of life. We had been asked by the Georgia Veterans Service Office (Gainesville) to provide financial assistance while they worked with the VA to resolve a snafu with his VA payments. Once we completed our initial analysis, we mailed the family some financial aid…they received and sent thanks, they were so grateful…his wife wrote to us “I wish you could have seen the smile on my husband’s face. This is a HUGE relief for us. God Bless all that your group is doing!” We then received another note of appreciation…the veteran passed on March 28th. And we continue to serve…touching one life at a time!
are really looking forward to the start of our Friday Night Lights socials when conditions allow. Also, as of now, all of our USTA, ALTA and Silverball leagues are suspended. We are all eager to see these programs resume which we hope will happen in the fall. Bill Papciak and his team of tennis instructors started private and semi-private lessons in mid-June with each session having 2 or 3 players to every instructor. The lessons are by reservation only by contacting Bill at billpapciak@gmail.com. The lessons comply with social distancing and other rules regarding COVID-19. Group Clinics will begin once our HOA and government health guidelines permit. The status of our Tennis Club activities is constantly changing, as are other amenity activities at Cresswind. To be up to date on the latest happenings, be sure to check the Tennis Club website, https://cresswindll.wixsite.com/ cwtennis, the Daily Update, and your Tennis Club weekly emails. If you would like more information about our tennis program contact Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com. week. Several of the new players are taking lessons with Will Munley at Chicopee Golf Course. If all goes as planned, we will be adding our Travel Tuesday golf once a month. And, as soon as we figure out the “dine” part of Nine and Dine, we will resume those events once a month. If you play golf, please consider joining our group. We welcome all level golfers. For more information, contact Pat Morris, plmorris14@gmail.com.

CPAC
By Wayne Blum Just what is CPAC? CPAC is an acronym for Cresswind Performing Arts Club. It is a club that acts as an umbrella for nine separate clubs/groups. It consists of the following:
Chorus – If you can sing, we want you, and if you cannot sing, we still want you. We have professionals in the Chorus that provide new members with any guidance they need. Chorus presently has over 130 or so members. We put on two shows a year. We are hoping to grow the chorus so that it is larger than the audience!
Theater – If you like acting or always wanted to try your hand at theater, then this is the group for you. There are several residents in this club that have never acted until retirement. If you are not interested in being on stage, there is plenty to do behind the scenes. Lighting, sound, make up, set building and supportive administrative roles to name a few of our needs. New volunteers are always welcome…our current participants will be happy to show you the ropes. The theater group puts on two shows a year. Variety Show – This is a yearly event where we highlight the talents of residents. If you can sing, dance, tell stories, tell jokes, play an instrument, juggle, this is for you!
Story Telling – No, not the kind you tell your grandchildren. These are residents who gather once a month to either tell stories or listen to them. You are welcome to come and listen or if you have a story to tell all the better! Scene Actors Guild – This group meets every other month. We have fun analyzing and practicing scripts and monologues, as well as delving into the art of improvisation.
Community Travel Club By Pam Papciak
The year 2020 held so much promise and like many other Cresswind clubs, the Community Travel Club (CTC) has had to cancel or postpone most of the year’s trips. A great deal of thought and planning went into the trips that were planned for you this year. So, we are equally disappointed. There is some good news, Kelly Tours-Gray Line, our new local company for trip coaches, is up and running excursions. They are adhering to the state’s mandated guidelines for CoVid 19. The CTC Board is discussing ways we can start Fall trips, while maintaining social distancing on the coach. We are thinking strategically and hope to make it work. Of course, your health and
It is a platform where participants can feel free to question or share ideas. No experience is needed...only the interest in the subject! Playscript Readers Club - The Playscript Readers Club is a member of the Cresswind Performing Arts Club. It is unique in that members read and share their insights by reading playscripts rather than books. Often, a script choice may be based on an upcoming play being presented in our area, enabling the group to attend the live performance and compare to the script.
Neighborhood Bands – Currently consists of only one band but we are open to adding additional bands. The band is Out Past 9 and they play hits from the past. We hope this arm of CPAC expands soon. New groups welcome! Liar’s Club – This is an event that occurs once a year, usually in January, where a panel of selected residents attempt to convince you, the audience, that their description of a certain word or item is correct. Only one is telling the truth. Your mission, if you decide to accept it, is to vote on who is the truth-teller. Performing Arts Technical Team (PATT) – This is a group of people who either cannot or will not dance, sing, act, or perform in any other way but if we did not have their expertise none of the above would not come to fruition. They provide sound, lighting, videography, set design, etc. They are truly what makes these performances a success.
If you are interested in becoming involved in any of these clubs/groups/events please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net or 404-483-0349 and I will be happy to put you in contact with the proper person. You can find more information about CPAC at https://www.cresswindpa. com/
safety are of paramount concern to us. All of our summer trips have been cancelled, as well as Harrah’s Cherokee Casino scheduled for October. Harrah’s is only open now on a ‘special’ guest invitation basis. We are still waiting for our invite! We still have high hopes that the following excursions will happen: A Taste of Gainesville, Atlanta History Center/Swan House, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and Christmastime in Asheville. As soon as the venues reopen, we’ll be able to provide you trip dates. If you are like the CTC Board, you must be anxious to start traveling again. When the state’s mandated guidelines permit, we plan to share these amazing trips with you. July/August | The Waterfall | Page 45
