KEEPING IN CONTACT
SUBMITTED BY: LINDA FURGERSON
How can summer be almost over? I don’t know about you, but the years seem to fly by too quickly. Hopefully the heat is behind us, and we can look forward to the crisp fall nights.
As a retired process improvement/process development engineer, I know first-hand the value of good communication, as well as data and feedback. Having good avenues of communication provides clarity and direction. The review and analysis of pertinent data helps to effectively identify and prioritize areas of opportunity. In addition, review of this data often provides part of the solution, or at least a direction.
Residents have several methods to communicate directly with the Board, Community Manager, as well as committees such as the Landscape Committee (LAN) and Architectural Review Committee (ARC). While phone calls and emails are good, even better are the contact links on the CLL website under RESOURCES>REQUESTS/FORMS (on the Cresswind website, hover over the “Resources” header and select “Requests/Forms” from the drop-down). In this area you will find links to each of these groups. This area also contains links to report issues with your landscaping directly to MTScapes, as well as issues found on common areas.
Contact links for the LAN and ARC can be used to ask questions prior to submitting an External Improvement Request (EIR) and ask about the progress of your EIR. However, you cannot submit an EIR via either of these links. All EIRs must be submitted to Darlene Carr in the HOA office so they can be recorded and assigned to the appropriate committee. And especially in the case of the LAN, do not use this link to report issues with your landscape service. The LAN has no responsibilities in addressing issues or concerns with MTScapes.
If you need to request work to be completed by MTScapes, use the Personal Property MTScapes Landscaping Concerns link. This information is sent directly to MTScapes.
Contact the Board – residents can use this link to directly ask questions, report issues, concerns, comments, or suggestions directly to the Board. When an item is submitted, a ticket number is assigned, and a notification is sent to all Board members. Based on the area of concern it is assigned to a specific
Board member or the Community Manager (if it relates to daily operations) to see it through to its resolution. Normally, you should receive some type of initial response within 3 business days. This could include contacting the resident directly to obtain further information and clarification of the issue. Once a resolution is developed it is entered into the system and the resident is notified of the solution. In many cases items received are added to the Board Activity Tracker (Board Task List). Items placed on the Activity Tracker are those that require a longer-term resolution, or more require budgeting, planning, or additional research.
Contact the Manager – residents can use this link to ask questions, or report issues or concerns directly to our Community Manager, Kitti Kleinedler, about operations and day-to-day activities. Similar to the Contact the Board process, a ticket number is assigned, and a notification is sent directly to Kitti. Based on the question or issue being reported, Kitti can assign the ticket to herself or someone on her staff. Normally, you should receive some type of initial response within 3 business days.
Research and Analysis – Using the Contact the Board/ Contact the Manager process can be more effective and efficient than simply emailing, phoning, or speaking directly to a Board member because this process ensures the activity is recorded, tracked, and communicated. Additionally, because the information is recorded in a database, we can do data analysis to look for trends, response times, commonly reported issues, etc. By reviewing the results from the Contact the Board/Contact the Manager areas, the Board is able to identify potential issues and repetitive problems. We can also review the efficiency in response. All this information helps us to better identify resident issues, implement effective resolutions, and improve our communication and response to residents.
So, if you have an issue that needs to be brought to the attention of the Board or the Community Manager, please use either the Contact the Board or Contact the Manager link to submit your concern. While it may not always be the answer you want to hear, you will get an answer based on the existing rules of the community.

FROM THE DESK OF KITTI KLEINEDLER
Justin, Peggy, Elijah, Maggie, Kitti, Heidi, Darlene and Lisa . . . your HOA staff. Day in and day out you see us and talk to us around the clubhouse or community, but how well do you know us? Well, you’re about to find out. One of the daytime talk shows has a segment where a person provides two statements about him/herself, and the host has to guess which one is correct. We are going to play that same game right now. Below you will find two statements about each staff member . . . one is completely true and the other is completely false. You guess which one is which and if nothing else, you will learn a little more about each of us. The correct answers will be found at the bottom of the article.
Justin is the Compliance/Contracts manager. He has been with Cresswind for 3 years, starting out first as the Maintenance Director, which accounts for why he knows so much about the building. Some of his tasks now involve overseeing contracts to see that all provisions are being met. He also keeps a watchful eye on the community to ensure that the Rules and Regulations are followed.
Statement #1 Justin loves to sing karaoke.
Statement #2 Justin hiked and back packed in New Zealand.
Maggie has been at Cresswind for 2 1/2 years as our fun-loving Lifestyle Director. When she isn’t entertaining residents with events, she spends time maintaining the Cresswind website. She attends committee meetings directly related to lifestyle and oversees the 100+ clubs in the community.
Statement #1 Maggie spent 24 hours alone in survivalist mode in the great outdoors.
Statement #2 Maggie was a competitive swimmer and still holds her school record for the 100 Butterfly.
Elijah just completed his second year as Maintenance Director. His tasks and responsibilities are too numerous to mention, but may be summed up by saying, “if it needs to be fixed, he’s the guy to do it.” His least favorite task is disposing of dead deer.
Statement #1 Elijah played in a rock band.
Statement #2 Elijah had the lead role in his school play.
Darlene is the first staff person new residents meet when they come for their initial orientation. And what a positive welcome they receive! She also manages all Architectural Review Committee (ARC) and Landscape (LAN) requests, resident accounting issues, and general customer concerns. She’s been doing these tasks for 4 years already.
Statement #1 Darlene learned to surf quite well when she lived in Hawaii.
Statement #2 Darlene was a member of the domestic Peace Corps.
Peggy and Heidi make up the front desk weekend staff. They have been working here for 4 and 3 years respectively. Did you know they are both residents of Cresswind, which provides them with added insight to residents’ requests and needs? Each of them works alternate weekends completing the tasks that the rest of us have left for them while offering great customer service too.
Statement #1 Peggy loves basketball and attended Detroit Pistons games with her father when she was growing up.
Statement #2 Peggy has been watching “Days of Our Lives” for 50 years.
Statement #1 Heidi loves horses and is somewhat of a horse whisperer.
Statement #2 Heidi ran a successful staffing-based business for 30 years.
Lisa is the newest staff member, joining us 6 months ago. Residents can get tickets, cards, tags, and transponders from her. She knows a little about everything and can direct you to the correct source for more information, if needed. She also offers free notary service to residents.
Statement #1 Lisa was Homecoming queen in high school.
Statement #2 Lisa’s children were Homecoming queens or kings in high school.

MANAGER’S CORNER
Finally, Kitti has been here 7 years. I started out in Heidi/Peggy’s position as part time weekend front desk receptionist. Over the years, I kept switching desks and here I am, community manager for the last 4 years. I do the un-fun stuff - pay bills, work with vendors, write reports, settle disputes, chase down problems, and work with the Board. I really miss the day-to-day interaction with residents.
Statement #1 Kitti has never ridden on a roller coaster.
Statement #2 Kitti has been to the Indy 500 two times.
The correct statement for each employee can be found below. So how did you do? How well do you know us??
Justin cashed in his savings at the age of 20, then he and a friend hiked/backpacked around New Zealand for 2 months. He participated in the WWOOFing program, working at hostels to earn his keep. He supplemented his possessions with items from the hostel lost and found
Maggie was required to complete a SOLO assignment for one of her classes in college. She spent 24 hours alone outside with only the supplies that could fit in a coffee can. She slept under the stars and a garbage bag while she listened to bobcats stalking her all night.
Elijah was in a rock band for 2 years performing over 100 gigs from Virginia to Miami. You wouldn’t have recognized this lead guitarist with his long hair and beard. Now his bright red guitar is strummed the most by his one-year-old daughter.
Darlene worked with a government agency during the Bosnian War relocating families torn apart by the war. She helped them find safe housing, food, medical care, jobs, and schooling. This was a very significant experience in life for her.
Peggy loves “Days of Our Lives.” She began watching it at lunchtime with her mother in 1967. Over the years she taped the daily episodes on a VCR while she worked. Fast forward to 2023 and she still “streams’ her favorite soap opera each day.
Heidi ran a staffing-based business for 30 years. Her company was the only one selected by the Atlanta Olympic Committee (AOC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1996 to provide services to the AOC and IOC during the Olympics in Atlanta.
Lisa’s children are all “high school” royalty. Her daughter was Homecoming queen in 2009. One son was Prom King in 2012, and the other was Homecoming King in 2014. All of them attended high school in Normal, Illinois. Let’s hope that Lisa was able to keep all those teenage egos in check.
Kitti went to the Indy 500 two years in the 70’s when Buick had the pace car. My brother-in-law was on the engineering team for the pace car, and he took 8 family members as his guests those years. We were able to visit Gasoline Alley and talk to the drivers. There still is a box of souvenirs, autographs and mementos stuck somewhere on a shelf.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE (ARC) AESTHETICS (AES·THET·ICS)
Submitted by: Bill Power
Your Cresswind Charter and Rules & Regulations use the word aesthetics nineteen times without definition. The Charter also states, “the Mission and Purpose of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is to preserve and enhance the aesthetics qualities of our community for the collective enjoyment of all current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the value of our homes”.
In an effort to understand aesthetics I went to the dictionary and found that aesthetics is defined as a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty and is further defined as a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste. I was hoping to find something more definitive.
Not getting an answer I could easily apply to our rules and regulations I kept questioning, how is aesthetics defined in Cresswind at Lake Lanier? I hope to get your thoughts on this, but I think the answer is right in front of us. “Our” neighborhood defines our “collective” meaning of aesthetics. It’s one of the reasons we invested here, we liked what we saw. Our definition starts at the intersection of Browns Bridge and Cresswind Parkway. Well maintained lawns, annual flower gardens, well selected and maintained trees, stone walls, and a massive waterfall. Not cluttered but tasteful. The aesthetics continue and expand as you drive past the clubhouse, marina, and our neighborhood streets. Pine straw, (so much pine straw), cottage style architecture and earth tone colors throughout.
As we move forward as a community, without Levitt or Kolter, your ARC has the responsibility to maintain our aesthetics by faithfully applying the current rules. At the same time, we’d like to be the agent of change whenever and wherever change is appropriate. That’s
quite a balancing act but I assure you your Architectural Review Committee takes their mission seriously. We ask your support as we complete our mission and encourage you to join us in the process of change. And of course, your BOD will review and approve any changes recommended by the ARC.
Your Architectural Review Committee is a very busy committee. So far this year we’ve reviewed approximately 250 Exterior Improvement Requests (EIR-1), with an approval rate of over 98%. If we must deny, we try to work with owners to reach a place where we can approve. We recently completed a rule change for water features. We are now tackling surface water drainage and the Levitt & Kolter paint schemes. Yard ornamentation will follow soon.
Chapter 5-3.2., of our rules and regulations, states that any modification, alteration, or addition of ornamentation of any type or size to a home in Cresswind, that is, anything that can be seen by you, a neighbor, or pedestrians requires advance approval from the ARC. This includes statues, metal or concrete sculptures, bird baths, flowerpots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc. The rules and regulations go on to specifically address everything from awnings, dumpsters, exterior lighting, fences and hot tubs to water features and Port-a-Potties.
The best mechanism to maintain and improve the aesthetics of our neighborhood is the ARC review process that starts with homeowners requesting a review of proposed improvements using form EIR-1. As I’m writing this article, I realized I have flowerpots in my front yard that have not been approved by the ARC. In a measure of good faith, I’ll submit a new EIR-1 and see what happens.

COVENANTS, RULES & REGULATIONS COMMITTEE
If you’ve ever wondered how our community is run and the rules by which we are governed, you need look no further than the Cresswind at Lake Lanier website under the section “Our Community/ Governing Documents”. There you will find everything that guides your HOA Board of Directors (Board) in reaching the decisions that govern our community. The Governing Documents section is divided into several categories. The first is our Community Charter which was established in June of 2010 and amended several times since then. Next are the Bylaws which pertain to the operating procedures of the community and how officers are elected and requirements for how meetings are conducted. The next section is the Residential Design Guidelines and Floor Plans for Kolter homes. Then come the Community Rules and Regulations; this is the single source document where homeowners will find the rules and regulations residents agree to follow when living in Cresswind. That is followed by the Communications Code of Ethics. Finally, you come to the Board of Directors

Resolutions. To put it simply, a resolution is a separate document created by the Board which supports or adds weight to a decision or action made by the Board. Resolutions legitimize the operations of the Board and committees supporting the Board. There are a number of resolutions addressing a variety of topics dealing with how the Board performs its functions. One that is of specific significance to residents is “Policy Resolution #04A1-2021 Violation Notices”. This document addresses the Board’s stance for issuing sanctions for violations of the Governing Documents. There are nine categories of violations:
1. Violations Of Rules Governing The Use Of Recreational Facilities
2. Violations Of Rules Governing Socially Accepted Behavior In the Recreational Facilities, Club House, and Common Areas
3. Violations Regarding Street Parking and Boat, Trailer, or RV Storage
4. Violations Regarding Golf Cart Parking
5. Activities Violations Regarding Nuisances, Noise, and Untidy Activities
6. Violations Regarding Animals
Welcome Committee News
Your Cresswind Welcome Committee is doing some great work. The goal of the committee is to welcome people new to Cresswind and to help current residents that are a bit out of the loop feel more connected.
Do you feel like you’ve got a good grasp on the various Cresswind Clubs and Committees? Would you like to get more involved in activities, but you’re not sure where to start?
We would like to welcome our new neighbors to Cresswind:
The Welcome Committee is planning a Clubs and Committees Fair on September 6th. At this fair, various Clubs and Committees will be represented to help familiarize new residents to much of what Cresswind has to offer. Guess what??? This will also be open to existing residents that may want to get more involved. Watch the daily update for more details.
Your Welcome Committee is also in the process of implementing a voluntary “sticker” program. New residents or existing residents that want to reconnect with others will soon have a wonderful option. So,
7. Violations Regarding Residency Requirements
8. Violations Regarding Leasing and Timeshares (including VRBO and AIRBNB)
9. Violations Not Specifically Named Enforcement of violations involves a schedule of sanctions. Usually, the first violation results in a courtesy notice. Second and subsequent violations can result in a suspension of recreational and clubhouse privileges and/or fines. Notices of violations are issued by the Community Manager on behalf of the Board. Fortunately, violations rarely escalate beyond the first notice, but it is important to know the consequences for ignoring or not complying with a notice of violation if you receive one. These are detailed in Chapter
7.1 Enforcement of Rules and Regulations of the Cresswind Covenants & Rules & Regulations Manual found under Governing Documents on the Cresswind website. Our Governing Documents are meant to protect our residents and the community at large, including maintaining the value of our investment as a homeowner.

we are very excited to announce our new program “Connecting the Dots”.
If you are new or a long term Cresswind resident wanting to “feel connected or reconnected” we encourage you to stop by the reception desk at the clubhouse and pick up a dot for your name tag. The dots on the name tag represent the openness of connecting with others and are a great ice breaker for conversation. So, the Welcome Committee would like to encourage everyone to stop by the clubhouse, pick up a dot for your name tag and let’s all “connect the dots”.

INTRODUCING THE TRAFFIC & ROAD USE COMMITTEE (TRU)
This past June our HOA Board of Directors (BOD) approved the formation of a new 7-member committee reporting to the BOD. This new Traffic and Road Use (TRU) Committee is the outgrowth of a long-standing resident-driven workgroup sanctioned by the 2020 Board to review and study traffic and road use issues in our community, and to offer recommendations to address them. Members of the TRU Committee are: Henry Zeranski, Carl Mongrue, Pam Snell, Patty Newell, Ted Marble, Andy Hampton, and John Stevens, with Brian Olson serving as the BODLiaison to the TRU Committee.
The stated mission of this new TRU Committee is to: “Assist the HOA Board of Directors and the Community Manager in their efforts to oversee and manage Cresswind street and pedestrian road traffic use.” With roughly 8 miles of private, residential roads and more than 1600 residents, our roads get a great deal of use. Resident vehicles, golf carts, and contractor/delivery trucks travel our roads almost incessantly. A fair number of cyclists and walkers add to the volume of CLL road-users. Add the fact that our roads are relatively narrow and contain numerous ‘blind’ and hilly curves, being alert to and
Submitted by: John Stevens
aware of others and following ‘common sense’ rules-of-the-road while using CLL roads becomes everyone’s responsibility.
But alas, the number of ‘near-miss’ stories shared by residents while walking, cycling, golf carting, or driving on CLL roads, suggest that more attention needs to be given to “…oversee(ing) and manag(ing) Cresswind street and pedestrian road traffic use.”
You may have noticed that a relocatable solar-powered Radar Speed Sign was installed on Cresswind Parkway near the approach to the Montgomery Gate exit this past January. After much review and investigation of ‘best practices’ for addressing ‘fast’ driving in residential neighborhoods, the CLL road use workgroup recommended that we purchase one. (Federal transportation studies strongly endorse radar speed signs as having the “most effective” near-and-long term impact on vehicle speed reduction.) Thanks to a grant from the Cresswind Community Fund, we now have our own radar speed sign that can be relocated to any street in Cresswind.
The CLL radar sign records day, time, and speed of approaching vehicles, including golf carts, and flashes via a lighted display, the vehicle’s speed to the driver. This ‘feedback’ information alerts drivers to check
their speed and, when necessary, to slow down to posted speed limits.
Our CLL radar sign has been operational on Cresswind Parkway since its installation on 07 January of this year. As of 28 July, 110,944 vehicles have traveled on Cresswind Parkway toward the Montgomery Gate. The data specific to this 7-month period is undergoing review and analysis and will be used to help the HOA-BOD monitor traffic speed on this stretch of road. Anecdotally, several residents residing along this stretch of Cresswind Parkway have noted “less speeding” past their houses.
As of 29 July 2023, the CLL radar speed sign has been relocated to another part of Cresswind Parkway, and is again recording day, time, and speed of vehicles approaching the Browns Bridge overpass from the Locust Cove Road intersection.
The TRU Committee will continue to assist and advise the HOA-BOD regarding CLL traffic and road use issues. To learn more about the results from the earlier workgroup study, go to the Education Committee page on the Cresswind Website, and please consider sharing your ideas, views, and experiences with the TRU as we continue to ‘study’ traffic and road use issues in OUR community.
TRAILS AND PATHWAYS COMMITTEE NEWS
Submitted by: Lynne Hayden
With cooler days and shorter days, we hope you are enjoying more time on our beautiful Trails. In addition, we hope you’ll take a moment to review our Committee news and updates at the Cresswind website> Our Community > Committees > Trails and Pathways Committee web pages. You’ll find good information on the Committee members, responsibilities and operations, trails and trail maps and our Committee webpage link. Recently, the Trails and Pathways Committee has been busy with Fall Maintenance - leaf blowing, repairs of steps and Trail amenities, and removal of fallen trees and branches. And, we have taken bids and steps to repair Swallow Trail washouts and amenities in disrepair. To help with larger efforts, several community members have stepped
up to join our Cresswind Trails Workgroup team for both repair and construction projects.
Would you like to join these types of efforts? Please contact President David Rames, David.Rames@charter.net
Autumn Spotlight on our Trails – Bluebird: If you haven’t been on one of our six Trails for a while, you will enjoy seeing them this Autumn and Winter – a great time to explore.
Easily accessible and relatively smooth terrain characterizes Blue Bird Trail – one of the most popular trails. Wildlife such as squirrels and deer are often spotted, along with many birds. 200’ treetops and a shady cool canopy enhance your walk. Spring brings Dogwood, Mountain Laurel, and Native Azalea blooms.
Take a look our online map and you’ll see how Bluebird starts and ends in convenient locations – across from the Dog Park and near the main roundabout. We encourage you to grab a walking stick, wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals, please), and lose yourself in vast fall colors, shady and cool areas, and plenty of woodsy smells! We hope you’ll be refreshed and delighted with your journey.

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Submitted by: Delores Diaz
The Landscape Committee members are sometimes asked to recommend shrubs for new or replacement plantings. Two important considerations in selecting shrubs are size and plant habits. The mature size of the shrub must be appropriate for its location and meet the specifications in the Cresswind Rules and Regulations, Chapter 5-4. Pay special attention to sections 5-4.6 regarding plant size and 5-4.7 regarding Do Not Plant shrubs. The manual
September is the first month of fall, but Georgia doesn’t always get that memo. Temperatures here may continue to be hot and muggy well into October. For that reason, avoid planting any shrubs until the weather starts to cool in mid to late October or November. Any shrubs planted before then will suffer the double shock of the heat and the replanting and are likely not to survive. The months of OctoberDecember are the optimum time to plant shrubs because as they begin to go dormant, their energy will be directed into producing stronger root systems before the winter arrives.
The Landscape Committee members are sometimes asked to recommend shrubs for
new or replacement plantings. The manual What You Need to Know About Landscaping in Cresswind clarifies the do not plant restrictions. Plants are on that list because they have an invasive nature, their size is impractical for our small yards, or they are toxic or deemed poisonous to people or animals. COMMITTEE CORNER
HEALTH & FITNESS COMMITTEE
Submitted By: Laurie
Solomon
The Health & Fitness Committee would like to welcome three new Committee members. Michael Lipsitt is an interventional cardiologist with expertise in cardiovascular fitness and the role of a healthy diet in maintaining reduced cardiovascular risk. Steve Danielsen, an All-American swimmer, airline and Navy pilot. He has administered swimming tests to pilots and crew members. James Burzotta’s main interest is furthering our relationship with the medical community to provide education to Cresswind residents. David Shaffer, President of the Board is our new liaison. We are looking forward to the knowledge they will add to our Committee.
Longstreet Orthopedics held a seminar on August 8 with wine and cheese. They presented the protocol individuals can follow to obtain easy access to becoming a new patient in their facility.
We have placed an order for a new bar for the lat pulldown machine in the gym. It will have the option of individual handles as well as the straight bar improving accessibility. In the near future we will acquire a new recumbent bike as well as a new treadmill.
Now that the extreme heat of the summer has passed, many people believe that hydrating the body with water is not as important. Water is crucial for the body to function properly. It regulates body temperature and carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells and organs. Water removes waste materials and toxins, cushions our joints, protects our organs and tissues. Consuming too little can be hazardous to your health and contribute to dehydration. Older adults are at a greater risk because of how our body composition changes. Relying on thirst is not the best way to monitor your water intake because symptoms of dehydration such as headache, fatigue, muscle cramps, and fuzzy thinking can begin before thirst signals you to drink. Drinking water steadily over the course of the day is the way to go.
Many people opt to drink soda, coffee, alcoholic beverages, and fruit juices. Caffeinated beverages have a diuretic effect boosting urine output. Most fruit juices are high in sugar which can be an issue especially for diabetics. Mixing in some water with your juice is an option. Vegetables such as cucumbers, celery, lettuce, radishes, bell peppers, and mushrooms are hydrating. Watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, apples, grapes, and other fruits offer hydration.
Adequate water consumption can help kidney stones and crystals from forming. Water intake can aid in weight control because people sometimes confuse hunger with thirst. Dental and oral health can benefit because keeping the mouth moist creates more saliva which washes away food and organisms that cause gum disease. Drinking water before exercise in addition to during activity can prevent dehydration and increase efficiency and performance. Considering we lose two and a half quarts of water daily everyone can understand how replenishing your supply is necessary for optimum health.
NOT SURE WHAT TO DO DURING THE WINTER MONTHS?
Let us help you reach your health and fitness goals. Come join the 45-minute indoor exercise classes taking place in the Lanier Room. Walk DVD (low-impact aerobics) starts at 10:15am every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Chair Exercise (strength, stretch, and balance) takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 10am. Both classes allow you to exercise at your own level/pace. Some DVDs include the use of provided weights or resistance bands. It’s your choice whether you want to use them or not. Either way—you’ll still walk away having gotten in a good and fun workout, as well as maybe seeing a friend or two. If you have any questions/concerns, please call Maureen Terry-Morehead (Walk DVD) at 703-939-4277, or Steve & Kathy Remsen (Chair Exercise) at 404-694-7192. We hope to see you in class!

The fish have been cooperative, with reports of spotted bass being caught early in the morning and at dusk in the Cresswind cove on crank bait and shaker head worms. Carol Wycoff caught this monster off the D dock recentlycongratulations Carol, it takes a great fisherman to land one this size on light weight spinning tackle. Fish like this are the reason we don’t recommend gentlemen go skinny dipping in Lake Lanier :-).

The photo shows three foursomes after a round at our favorite golf course, Chattahoochee Country Club. PICKLEBALL CLUB NEWS
Submitted
By: Cassie Caton
September has us looking forward to cooler temps and more playing time on our newly resurfaced courts! We are fortunate to partake in this thriving sport that offers numerous health benefits. Pickleball improves your agility, hand eye coordination, balance, and cardiovascular fitness. It also helps with weight management, increases muscle strength, improves flexibility and much, much more!
There will be many pickleball events to help amplify your game this fall. Another Novice Training series led by Jim Snell, as well as Intermediate/Advanced Drill Sessions offered by Sep Khameneh. Our Spring Mixed Flex League was a big success, so watch for information about Men’s and Women’s Flex Leagues later this fall. Social Daytime and Evening Scrambles can also be expected!
During Cresswind Grandparents weekend we held a fun pickleball clinic for the kids and had about 50 participants. Thanks to the many volunteers and grandparents who stepped in to assist! It was a huge success and the kids loved it!
On September 9th we will hold the annual REED FINANCIAL tournament and dinner with a full roster in each skill category. This is a popular event that gives all club members a chance to experience a competitive yet fun tournament. On November 17–19 we will hold a 3-day Pickleball Camp conducted by Pro Mark Price. The response has been great, and we are looking forward to hosting Mark and his staff for this valuable coaching opportunity.
Now that the court resurfacing is behind us, daily Open Play is back in full swing. We should also be enjoying two additional awninged benches courtesy of North Georgia Health System (NGHS). Please give NGHS a big shout out for their generous 2022 donation that will DOUBLE the shade on courts 4/5/6!
Other notable additions to our courts include a new paved walkway from storage to sidewalk, new water fountain, gates repaired, more ball stops, and lots of new orange pickleballs for the ball machine. Our membership is up to 313. To quote Andre Agassi, “ …pickleball is where tennis players go to die, so I’m officially dying. But what I will say, 100 percent – I never thought I’d say this, as long as I can walk, I’m playing. I cannot wait to get out there”.
Visit the club website (www.cresswindpickleball.com) and the Cresswind at LL Pickleball Group on Facebook to stay updated on all things Pickleball here in the neighborhood! See y’all on the courts!

TENNIS CLUB
Submitted By: Sandy Barmak
The badly needed resurfacing of the tennis / pickleball courts finally took place in late summer. While the different courts were being resurfaced, the tennis and pickleball clubs met the challenge of fewer courts and collaborated court times to allow both groups sufficient playing time. We all will enjoy playing this fall without the many cracks on our courts. We thank the HOA for approving the expense of resurfacing the courts. Also, we were very lucky to have Rick Osterloh working with Gary Foster to get this done.
The extreme heat of summer is hopefully past and good tennis weather is upon us. Our various Cresswind competitive leagues are just starting their season. Dan Skeels will once again be captain of the Cresswind Men’s Silverball team. The league now has 6 teams and will play on Monday mornings. Also playing on Monday mornings is the Women’s USTA 3.0 55+ team. Both teams coordinate when they play their home games to avoid conflicts for the courts.
Speaking about our competitive Cresswind teams, 14 Cresswind players participated in the inaugural season of the Men’s Senior 55+USTA league. Excellent quality play was displayed, and the season was a great success. Bill Papciak and John Ulam each captained a Cresswind team, and their teams came in second and third place respectively, in the league. The Men’s 55+ NEGTA/USTA league will begin again in mid-September, playing at 10:00 am on Wednesday mornings. If you’d like to participate,

contact either billpapciak@gmail.com or john.ulam@yahoo.com. Additionally, a Cresswind ALTA team will start this Fall Season. Bill Papciak is the contact if you are interested in joining.
The Wednesday evening 6:00 pm men’s doubles tennis played through the summer heat. Play will continue through the fall and more participation is expected with less people traveling and cooler fall weather. To ensure enough players come out, registration is required. If you would like to participate in Wednesday evening play, contact Roger Otto, raotto1@yahoo.com.
Our social committee led by Jane and Ed Erkes has been busy. Several members attended the Wimbledon Party to socialize, nosh, and watch an exciting 5 set men’s final as Carlos Alcaraz beat 4-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic. On September 10th the tennis club will come together again, this time to fraternize and watch the Men’s Final of the US Open, the one Grand Slam tournament played in the US. Watch for more information about our Round Robin social on Saturday, October 21st. These events are a great opportunity for tennis club players to get to know one another better off the courts.
Our tennis events would not be complete without our clinics taught by our volunteer resident tennis experts and coordinated by Bill Papciak. Whether you are just returning to tennis, or want to polish your strokes and strategy, these clinics have something to offer. The clinics are held three times a month, rotating between Wednesdays and Saturdays, and are open to the entire Cresswind community. Be sure to check the Daily Email Update for information on the dates and times of upcoming clinics. Also, check out the times for Open Play, come out and practice and join the fun on the courts. For more information about Tennis Club events, be sure to check out our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite.com/cwtennis. You may also contact our President, dannybrown58@comcast.net, if you have questions or want to get involved. We hope to see some of you on Monday or Wednesday mornings cheering on our competitive teams.

NEEDLECRAFT CLUB
Submitted by: Pam Gonzalez
We are a social club that meets every Thursday from 10:00 AM to Noon in the Arts and Crafts room. Participants bring their own work in progress in knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, beading, needlepoint, etc. We welcome all skill levels and can assist in techniques, “tips and tricks”, and help when assistance is needed.
In addition to personal projects, participants also create various crafts for the community such as hats and scarfs for the homeless, lap blankets for hospice and veterans, and hats for preemie babies. For the past several years we have knitted and crocheted baby doll blankets that are used to wrap small dolls and placed in shoe boxes with other small gifts for Operation Christmas Child Organization.
New participants are always welcome. No cost – just bring your work in progress and be prepared to fill 2 hours with community news, stores, and laughter.

BILLIARDS CLUB
Submitted By: Steven Gould
If you enjoy playing a good game of billiards or are interested in learning to play, the Cresswind Billiards Club may be for you. We offer friendly competition for all levels of play within the community. Multiple times each year we run team and/or individual leagues to test your skills in different games. We play 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball and Straight Pool. We have established rule sets so there is no confusion about how a game is played. Feel free to join us, we have the billiards room scheduled every Monday and Wednesday evening at 6pm, there is also additional informal practice on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1pm.
THE PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF BILLIARDS
If you are like many adults, you may tell yourself that you should exercise more often but grow bored of working out at the gym or have trouble sticking to a workout routine when you lead such a busy lifestyle. If you already play billiards frequently, then you may not realize that you are already fitting some fun exercise into your schedule without even realizing it!
During a two-hour game of billiards, the average player walks around the pool table about 100 times. When you add the distance of those 100 trips together, it equals about three-quarters of a mile. So, if your goal has been to fit a one mile walk into your schedule each day, realize that every day you play a game of billiards, you are already close to reaching your goal before you even step outside or into the gym.
Playing billiards also helps people of all ages build arms, back, and leg strength; improve their body flexibility; and improve their balance. While these billiards health benefits are great for adults and children, they are especially beneficial for the elderly who often struggle to find healthy activities to enjoy that are not too strenuous. In fact, if you have an elderly loved one who suffers from arthritis, inviting them to play a game of pool is a great way to help them get some healthy physical activity that doesn’t put painful stress on their joints.
THE BRAIN HEALTH BENEFITS OF BILLIARDS
Page 22 The WATERFALL September/October 2023
Playing a good game of billiards is not just great for your family’s physical health, but it can also help keep their brains healthy. Billiards tables are very popular in retirement homes and assisted living facilities, and for good reason. It is very important for older adults to participate in activities that engage their brains to help ward off Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. When seniors engage in activities that require them to problem-solve, as billiards does, it can prevent the cognitive decline that can lead to dementia. Younger adults need to put their brains to good use frequently too, and studies have shown that learning new things frequently as an adult can ward off cognitive decline later in life. Come join the fun, Monday and Wednesday 1:00 and 6:00 pm. For those using the tables outside of the billiards club, a few things to be aware of:
1. You must be at least 18 to use the tables.
2. Use the chalk provided as we only want this color chalk used and don’t want different color chalk marks on the cloth.
3. Do not use the butt end of the cue on the table or drag anything across the cloth as this may damage the cloth.
4. When you are finished playing, please brush out the chalk marks on the table, using one of the brushes located in the cue racks.
5. Replace all the cues in the racks and place the cover back on the table.

CIC INVESTMENT CLUB
Submitted By: Louise Dunn
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes are in the air. Temperatures are cooling and days are shorter. The colors in our neighborhood shift from greens to reds, oranges, and yellows. Changes are also ongoing in the stock market. Surprises, some positive, and volatility continue to be the norm. Discussions about recession persist yet the market continues to show increases in earnings. However, profitability and growth are slowing.
Many of us struggle with questions about how to maintain and promote income growth in this post Covid time. CIC Investment Club members share their expertise to make informed decisions about investments through monthly presentations. All CIC members take part in offering suggestions for stocks and in voting on stocks for the club. Club membership is limited to 30. A wait list is available for interested residents if there are no openings.
As a service to the entire community, the Club also hosts guest financial presentations during the year open to all Cresswind residents. Watch the Daily Bulletin for information about the date and time for an upcoming presentation by a local financial firm planned for mid to late October.
We invite you to join us as a guest to learn more about the Cresswind Investment Club. Meetings are the first Monday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the clubhouse kitchen. Please contact Len Greco at lengreco1104@aol.com or Cathy Hoskinson at cathy. hoskinson@gmail.com if you would like to attend.

COOKING CLUB
Submitted by: Gary Foster
Cooking Club continues to stay busy offering the members opportunities to socialize, learn, and enjoy delicious food through our events, cooking school, and socials. We hope you have taken an opportunity to attend or volunteer for at least one of these fun activities and look forward to your participation in future events.
The Fish Fry on June 10th was a huge success. The food was delicious and the band, TwisteD HipsterZ, helped to make a fun event. Cooking Club also participated in Grandparent’s Day serving ice cream sundaes to grandparents and their grandchildren. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make both of these events a success.
Cooking School has been busy with 3 classes this summer. Chef Tracy Peters, owner of Plant Based Trace, was well received by the Cooking School guests when she prepared and served plant-based dishes for the attendees and instructed them on using plants to prepare meals. The guests displayed a great interest in this style of cooking so we will definitely invite her back. The Four Guys and a Gal Brunch prepared and served a meal on June 25th which was again as delicious as it was the first time. A big thank you to Sid Jacobs and his crew. Rich St. George and Gerry Cieply shared a Tools and Techniques Cooking School class on InstaPots preparing and serving guests a tasty meal while instructing on the use of some kitchen tools and, of course, use of the Instapot.
The Cooking Club will host a Chili Cookoff on October 7th and will again partner with Lifestyle for the October 28th Oktoberfest. Stay tuned for more details. Upcoming Cooking School classes may include Wine and Appetizer Pairing and Sous Vide. Support your club by attending events and social events, and also by volunteering. We hope to see you at the next event.

CRESSWIND PERFORMING ARTS CLUB
Submitted by: Rich St George
The Cresswind Performing Arts Fair is keeping busy this year. Since we last spoke the Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre had two terrific showings of Cinder…Really? during Grandparent’s Weekend. It was a crazy and fun show.
The Summer Hummers performed two fantastic shows in August that we are still talking about.
On top of that we had our second annual PERFORMING ARTS FAIR. Over 30 organizations throughout Atlanta came to Cresswind to let all the residents know what they are up to and the shows they have coming up. What a great turnout we had!
Finally, Out Past Nine had a terrific performance up in Hiawassee for the residents of that community. Rain did not dampen their spirits as they moved the show inside and kept on rockin’!

We had a wonderful time the next month with our Patriotic themed night. Everyone showed up in their red, white, and blue. Many patriotic songs were sung, and we had a great crowd! If you have not joined us, we meet the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Ballroom. There is no cost! You can request your favorite song to sing or just listen and enjoy a fun evening. NEIGHBORHOOD BANDS
Submitted by: Wayne Blum
Out Past Nine’s performance in Hiawassee, GA has come and gone! On July 15th the band played to a packed house in the Hiawassee Civic Center. Close to 100 residents were in attendance. Normally this event is held outside, but rain threatened so it was moved in at the last minute. It was a great success! Rumor has it that we will be invited back next year!
Looking ahead to September 8th, the band is scheduled to play right here in Cresswind. The plan is to perform outside, weather permitting. This would allow an unlimited number of residents and friends/family to attend. Let’s hope the weather cooperates!
Finishing out the year we will perform at Lanier Village on October 10th. Although Lanier Village has hosted several CPAC events this year it is the first opportunity for Out Past Nine to perform there! The village is home to several former Cresswind residents. We are looking forward to seeing them once again! The performance at Lanier Village will be our sixth of the year. We plan to take the rest of the year off to work on new material and be ready for 2024!

The Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre had a terrific time performing for the kids and grandkids during Grandparent’s Weekend. They produced Cinder…Really? and had a REALLY good time! The confetti was flying as well as the guinea pigs! Thanks to all that came out to see the show!
The cast and crew of Cinder…Really?
They are now gearing up for their fall show called FOUR OLD BROADS by Leslie Kimbell and directed by Rich St George!
Retired burlesque queen Beatrice Shelton needs a vacation. A Sassy Seniors Cruise through the Caribbean may be just the ticket if she can convince, Eaddy Mae Clayton, to stop praying and go with her. Things have not been very pleasant at Magnolia Place Assisted Living since Nurse Pat Jones began working there. The newest resident, Imogene Fletcher, is suddenly losing her memory. Maude Jenkins is obsessed with her favorite soap opera and planning her funeral. Sam Smith, retired Elvis impersonator, keeps trying to bed every woman in the building. Hilarity ensues as Imogene goes undercover and Maude enters the Miss Magnolia Senior Citizen Pageant. If they can solve the mystery, they may make it to the cruise ship after all.
Keep an eye on your Daily Update for auditions and performance information.

DINNER CLUB
Submitted By: Karen Silverthorn - Coordinator
Dinner Club kicks off its tenth season this fall! Since 2012, Dinner Club has organized four themed dinners per year for its members between OctoberMarch. Upcoming dinners are scheduled for Sat October 2023, November 4, 2023, February 3, 2024, and March 2, 2024. Members, please mark your calendars now!
Anyone can join the Dinner Club at any time of the year. There are no annual fees or commitment to attend any of the four dinners per year. Your name will be added to the membership list to receive an Evite prior to each event. Singles are welcome provided they find another single to pair with. If you enjoy cooking and exploring new ingredients around an elegant table, then this Club is for you!
The menu for these multicourse meals is set in advance by the Dinner Club Steering Committee. However, members are encouraged to submit meals and recipes for consideration. Recipes, course, and house assignments are emailed to participants in advance of each dinner. This is not a ‘progressive’ dinner. Rather, four couples/pairs are assigned a host home for the evening. At each host house, participants follow the same recipes and make the same courses. Each couple/pair is assigned part of the meal to shop for and prepare. All food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house at the end of the meal.
If you are interested in joining or reviewing the guidelines, email the coordinator directly - Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net.
Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy a delicious gourmet meal while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

NINE & DINE golfers are couples and singles who enjoy playing 9-holes of golf together once a month and then after golf going to a restaurant to share a casual meal together. All levels of golfers are welcome because we play in a scramble format so there is no pressure on any one person to do well. We started our season this year in May and played at the Chattahoochee Country Club and then ate at their grill. Each month we will play a different course and eat at a different restaurant. If you
have not already signed up to join this fun group of golfers and would like to join, just send an email to Rita Mesimer at bttoomey@aol.com.
CRESSWIND GENEOLOGY CLUB
Researching genealogy is a fascinating and rewarding endeavor that offers numerous benefits. Understanding our family history and heritage provides a deeper sense of identity and belonging. It allows us to uncover the stories, traditions, and experiences of our ancestors, enabling a connection to the past that shapes who we are today.
Genealogical research also helps to preserve and pass down family knowledge to future generations. By piecing together our family tree, we create a valuable resource that can be shared with relatives, providing a sense of continuity and shared history. It allows younger family members to appreciate their roots and understand the sacrifices and achievements of their predecessors. Furthermore, genealogy research can shed light on medical conditions or genetic predispositions that run in the family. Discovering patterns of illnesses or hereditary traits can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and take necessary precautions.
In addition, genealogy research builds critical thinking and research skills. It involves investigating historical records, analyzing data, and constructing a coherent narrative from fragmented pieces of information.
Ultimately, delving into genealogy enriches our lives by fostering a deeper understanding of ourselves, cultivating a sense of belonging, and providing valuable insights into our familial and personal history.
In the Genealogy Club we address these issues and more. The Genealogy Club meets the 4th Wednesday of every other month February – October at 7:00pm in the Georgia Room. Want more information? Contact one of the facilitators: Howie Mueller accudart556@yahoo.com Dave Dittmeier DaDittmeier@gmail.com

PARKINSON’S SUPPORT GROUP
Submitted by Bob Goldmann
The Parkinson’s Support Group (PSG) continues to bring keynote speakers to our organization. In July, the PSG held a joint meeting with Lanier Village Estates. A total of 50 plus individuals attended the lunch and learn session held at Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville. The support group members had the opportunity to have free testing for hearing, speech, language, and fluency sponsored by the University of Georgia Communication Sciences and Disorders Department.
Every other month the group meets to hear about advancements in treating Parkinson’s from specialists in the field. The other months we learn about experiences group members have had as well as having some much-needed socializing and learning about each other through group games. You never know who was a true rebel in their younger life!
In August, the Cresswind PSG will be holding a joint meeting with Lanier Village Estates (LVE) at their site on Friday, August 11th starting at 11:00 AM. The speaker will be Tammy Jo Best. Tammy Jo is the Comprehensive Case Manager, for the Parkinson’s 2-day evaluation clinic at Emory. Tammy Jo is with the Emory Brain Health Center and will speak about the 2-day program and other activities at the Center. If you are interested in attending the session, please contact either Delores Diaz at delmdiaz@aol.com or Bob Goldmann at bob.goldmann@ charter.net by August 8th.
Coming in September the PSG will be presenting a program by North Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) on movement disorders starting at 2:00 PM. No advance sign up is required for this session. If you would like to be added to our email list, please contact Delores Diaz or Bob Goldmann at one of the emails addressed above.
MODEL RAILROAD CLUB
Submitted by: Bill Edmondson
Our club members participated in the Cresswind Grandparents weekend with our modular layout in the Lanier Room. We had a very successful exhibition and operation of trains all day on Saturday, with approximately 250 attendees during the day. In watch-
ing the folks visiting, it really seemed that the grandparents were having as much fun as the kids…and more so in some cases. So cool!
A significant effort was required to haul-in and assemble modules on Friday, operate trains on Saturday, and disassemble/haul-out on Sunday. We thank all members and volunteers for their help and support. Our next club meeting will likely be in late September or early October. Watch for announcements in the Cresswind Daily Updates once date/time/location decided. Enjoy photos! “ALL ABOARD!”
THE RV CLUB - A LAKE LANIER EXPERIENCE
Submitted By: Ken and Priscilla Stockwell
In July, six (6) Cresswind RVs traveled to the nearby U.S. Army Corps Bolding Mill Campground, about 10 miles from our own Cresswind community. Our newest members, Sandra and Willie Nelson, were able to join us and begin their journey with the RV Club. Welcome aboard!
Bolding Mill Campground is an excellent choice for camping on Lake Sidney Lanier, offering plenty of comfortable sites with great lake views in addition to being a well-kept facility. We enjoyed fishing, kayaking, leisurely walks and lazy floats on the lake. This campground is perfect for families, so six Cresswind grandchildren came along and enjoyed time in the RVs and time with grandparents. Several of the children – Matthew, Jorie, and Hatcher caught their first fish at Bolding Mill. The smiles on their faces were precious. Hannah perfected her kayaking skills. Owen and Max convinced us to set up floats behind the kayaks to drag them along the lake. Grandparents are tough! In the evenings we all (children and adults) enjoyed “corn hole” toss games and, thanks to Al and Sonia Pileggi, a fire on the second night to roast marshmallows – a big hit for the children.
The Stockwells, Karen and Dave Rames and Suzanne and Bob Edmond are returning to Orange Beach, AL in April 2024. We would love to have more Cresswind RV Folks join us. Our dates are April 8th to May 6th. Consider any of those weeks to camp with us. There is so much to do and enjoy in Orange Beach!
We are always looking for new neighbors to join in the fun. We welcome “pop up” trips! Schedule a trip and we will go. If you have an RV (or are shopping for one!) and are inclined

to spend some time with your fellow travelers, please let us know through Facebook – Cresswind RV Club group. We are looking for another couple to join the Pileggi’s in planning trips. Generally, such planning requires at least 4 people, or 2 couples, to handle all the details.
Come join the group for an experience you will not soon forget! Again, the primary means of communication at present is through Facebook – Cresswind RV Club.
SHALOM CLUB
Submitted by: Miriam Rosenberg
The Shalom Club is having a “Ring in the New Year” happy hour on Friday, September 22nd 5-7 pm to celebrate the Jewish New Year 5784. We hope to be in the outdoor pavilion behind the Clubhouse, weather permitting. At the Jewish New Year, we wish all our Cresswind neighbors a very Healthy and Happy New Year!
Rosh Hashanah, the New Year, will be observed this year on Saturday, September 16th and Sunday, September 17th. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is celebrated on Monday, September 25th. Local service attendance is available at Deaton Creek Shalom Club for all days. Shalom B’harim Synagogue in Gainesville will have services the morning of September 17th, the evening of Sunday, September 24th for Kol Nidre and in the afternoon on Monday, September 25th. Services times will be shared closer to the holidays.
We hope that the Greater Gainesville community and our Shalom club members and Cresswind neighbors will join us for a timely program on Sunday, October 15th 2-4 pm at the Gainesville Civic Center. Join Shalom B’harim and the Gainesville community for a multimedia presentation into the long and tragic history of antisemitism led by Mr. Brendan Murphy, an educator at The Marist School. Among his many awards and honors, Mr. Murphy has received the Outstanding Educator Award from, Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect. More details will be shared as the event approaches.
We have formed a planning committee to assist in planning and organizing programs. If you are interested in helping or would like more information about the Shalom Club or High Holiday services, reach out to Miriam Rosenberg (grammycooks716@gmail.com) 954-501-9249 or Karen Walters (karsuew@gmail.com) 301-461-1900.
CRESSWIND SOCIAL SINGLES
Submitted by: Barbara Hillick
If you have any doubts about having a good time and meeting a lot of great people, you need to take a look at the winning Social Singles golf cart in the 4th of July parade! Many talented people had a great time preparing the float to share with Cresswind.
If decorating is not your thing, how about sitting by the pool with drinks and food in hand while talking with interesting people? There were over 40 people who participated in the last mingle! More mingles are in the works so be sure to join us.
Do you like boating, tubing, or kayaking? People in Social Singles enjoy the same activities! Miniature golf was such a
successful activity in the past that plans are already in the works for a future date. A repeat day trip to several north Georgia wineries is in the planning stage. Many people missed the first trip or had such a great time that they are ready to go back!
If you prefer playing games, bowling is a regular activity. Since members enjoy game nights, plans are already in the works. Groups get together for lunches at new restaurants around the area. There is even a single men’s dining group. Other upcoming events include a Veterans Potluck and Holiday Party. While Social Singles like to meet for activities, that is not the only purpose. Charities around the area benefit from Social Singles fundraisers. Members get together to help at thrift stores, food banks, and other charities.
If you are ready to get involved or just want more information, please access the link for Social Singles on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. Someone from Social Singles will reach out to you. We look forward to meeting you!
COMMUNITY TRAVEL CLUB (CTC)

Only 4 more months left in 2023 and the famous question is “where did the year go”. We currently have 400+ Members
onboard. If you see trips on the website, you would enjoy going on, we gladly allow you to join our membership for only $5.00. We also will be looking for some new blood to be on the Travel Board in 2024. Please contact one of the Board members with questions, interest, etc.
Since the last publication was published before our Jekyll Island trip, I want to share what a great trip it was. Even though we had lots of “liquid sunshine”, we still found time to stay dry and busy doing indoor events. On July 19, our Chattanooga trip was also hit with rain, but it did not slow us down. We enjoyed lunch at the beautiful Mayor’s Mansion,

a boat ride on the Southern Belle Riverboat for a cruise, and finally an exploration of the Tennessee Aquarium.
August 26 was a trip to Mercedes Benz Stadium to watch the Atlanta United Soccer team. Before we went inside, there was a pre-party planned for us.
September 7, we will be traveling to Truist Park for the Atlanta Braves Baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals. More details to follow in the next Waterfall publication. The last trip for this year will be to St. Augustine/Daytona Holiday Adventure. We will also share details about this trip in the next Publication.
Our General Meetings are held at 4:00 pm on the first Thursday of each month in the Ballroom. We will continue drawing (4) $50.00 Gift Certificates each month we have a trip scheduled. Come travel with us!!!
CRESSWIND VETERANS CLUB
Helping Veterans in Need
At the most recent quarterly meeting of the Cresswind Veterans Club, we again illustrated our main reason for existence - helping Hall County area Veterans and their Families in need.
A major problem for too many Veterans is not having the money to pay for one of the most essential of life’s necessities –food! Two local organizations do a great job in helping Veterans with this problem, and we decided to support their efforts. At the meeting, we presented a check for $2,000 to John Prentice of Good News at Noon food pantry and a second check for $500 to Ron Crow of VFW Post 8452 (even though VFW Post 8452 doesn’t have a food pantry, they provide food to Veterans in need in Hall County). In the last few weeks alone, we have contributed approximately $4,897 to six Veterans in need with rental assistance, lodging, and/or food.
Our own Alice Bray volunteers as a mentor in the Hall County Veterans Court program, allowing Veterans the opportunity to rehabilitate without going to jail. At our general meeting on July 18, 2023, she introduced us to her mentee Jeff, who recently graduated from his first year of the two-year program. With our assistance, he was able to move into his own apartment on July 15, 2023. Jeff shared his experiences and gratefulness to our Veterans Club and especially to Alice, for significantly changing his life for the better. After hearing about the positive impact this program had for him, several other members of our
Veterans group expressed their desire to help and make a positive difference in Veterans’ lives. If you are interested too, please contact our lead, Ron Micuch.
Congratulations to our three new Cresswind Veterans Board Members! Thank you for all the hard work you are stepping into: Kevin Pearson will serve as our new Vice President as well as “professional” photographer, Kandi Andrade is our new Treasurer, and Carl Lambrehct is our newest Member at Large.
Congratulations to Kim Koenig and Ron Micuch for receiving the Quilt of Valor at the August 1st Veterans Appreciation Luncheon. Thank you to Rose Hosey, Sheran Connolly and Julie Housley, from the Cresswind Quilting Club, for a very special recognition ceremony for two of our finest Veterans. It was a very humbling experience for those who witnessed the ceremony. You all are AMAZING people. Thank you for the many, many hours you put into each of these special quilts, and most importantly, putting your heart and soul into symbols of Valor.

On behalf of the Veterans Club, I would like to thank Adam Hicks, Esq. and his team, from Lanier Law Group, LLC for sponsoring our August 1st Appreciation Luncheon.

FERST READERS
Submitted by: Lisa Giblin
Ferst Readers of Hall County has been busy, busy, busy….. We are the early literacy program providing free monthly books to children ages birth to 5. With only 40 percent of 3rd graders reading at a proficient level in Hall County, this program is critical to improving these results.
Our number of children served has grown to 486 due to positive results at community events such as the recent Boys and Girls Club Duck Derby. We are also registering children at several Back-To-School venues, Head Start and Family Promise so our numbers are climbing.
Ferst Readers will be represented at our Cresswind Vendor Fair on September 30th. Stop by and learn more about this worthwhile program. Contact Lisa Giblin at lgiblinj@gmail.com for any details.
