100 Years of Dawson County High School Dawson County High School is celebrating its centennial in 2019! A lot has changed about the high school since its first senior class in 1919. Here are some fun facts through the years from the Dawson County Historical and Genealogical Society and the works of local historian Charles B. Finley.
Did you know:
The first Dawsonville School was a boarding school in Dawsonville. The oldest known record of the school is an advertisement in The Dawson County Advertiser from 1896.
The 1919 graduating class of Dawsonville High School – which would go on to become Dawson County High School – consisted of five women. The class of 2019 has 252 graduates. The first principal found recorded was D. H. Alexander who served from 1919 into the early 1920s. He was known for addressing issues of punishment in public, with paddling students in the auditorium in front of an audience during chapel services. Dawsonville High School first became an accredited high school in 1926. In the early 1930s, Claude E. Boggs established the Future Farmers of America at the high school. In 1935, A new Dawsonville High School building was completed. It was a one-story building with eight large classrooms, an auditorium, a library and an office. In 1939, Future Homemakers of America began at the school. It was a program with a primary objective of preparing girls to be good wives and mothers and to learn home economics. It was a female equivalent of the FFA. When Dawsonville High School burned down in 1940, students were sent to Dawsonville Baptist Church and Dawsonville Methodist Church for their classes while the new school was under construction. They even held classes in the courtroom of the courthouse.
The first BETA Club at the high school was chartered in 1946.
Dr. Herbert W. Robinson, a graduate of Dawsonville High School, became principal of DCHS in 1947 and served until 1965. He also penned the high school’s alma mater in 1947. Robinson Elementary School is named after him. Up until the early 1950s, Dawsonville High School didn’t have a gymnasium. Instead, students played basketball on an outdoor clay court. The first Dawson County gym wasn’t built until about 1950 and was lost to fire in 1964. The Dawson County High School of today, which sits on Perimeter Road, was dedicated on Jan. 25, 1998. The Bowen Center for the Arts used to house the Vocational Agriculture classrooms and Home Economics classes for the high school. It was restored in 1999 by the Dawson County Arts Council and is the only remaining part of the old “Rock School.” In 2008, local historian Charles B. Finley published the book Yesterday Once More: A History of the Schools of Dawson County to preserve the history of the school system, including Dawson County High School. Finley was a graduate of Dawson County High School and taught in the local system for 42 years. The book can be found at the Dawson County Library. In 2018, the digital design class at Dawson County High School redesigned the school’s crest to commemorate the school’s first century. In 2019, DCHS hosted Gov. Brian Kemp who was part of a discussion with local Dawson County officials about mental health expansion for students.
Graduation for the class of 1942 took place at Lumpkin Campground because the next school building was not yet complete.
In August 2019, the high school’s College and Career Academy will open that will house dual enrollment classrooms and lab space for technical and four-year college-bound students.
In the early 1940s, L.D. Singleton served as principal and was referred to as “Lost Duck” Singleton by many because when he went down the halls saying “Quiet! Quiet!” it sounded like “Quack! Quack!”
The 2019 graduates as well as the faculty and staff of Dawson County High School will wear special pins commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Dawson County High School during the graduation ceremony.

Congratulations Max Zappendorf
on your graduation and your outstanding accomplishments through your high school years. McKenzie & Company, LLC TAX AND ACCOUNTING
ANDREA A. MCKENZIE, CPA 300 OLD DAWSON VILLAGE ROAD, SUITE 120 DAWSONVILLE GEORGIA 30534 706-265-4000 | AMCKENZIE@AMCKENZIECPA.COM
“Max Zappendorf has been a welcome addition to my Anatomy class. He is the class leader and acts like it. He is unfailingly polite, well-mannered and pays attention in class. He knows his fellow students and is a good friend to all of them. He will also help others with his notes and will indicate well in advance about him missing class. I am very happy to see Max graduate and I wish him all the best in college and beyond.” -Saket Waghmode, Master of Science “I have had the privilege of watching Max Zappendorf grow from a young man who wasn’t quite sure of himself, into a man full of confidence and pride. His journey was not without bumps along the way, but from those bumps, Max used those experiences to develop his character and grit. Max is well thought of and spoken about by his brothers in blue, and an asset to Echo Company and the Battalion. I’m confident Max has a bright future ahead of him.” -LTC Adam L. Carter, Deputy Commandant “Maximillian Zappendorf, a cadet first lieutenant in Echo Company at Riverside Military Academy, will graduate in just two weeks with the class of 2019. Max will attend the Citadel this fall accompanied by an Army ROTC 3 year scholarship. Max came to Riverside three years ago and quickly rose to the rank of officer through active participation in the JROTC program, Raiders, swim, track and field, and Crew. Max demonstrated early on that he is committed to the values of our school and has decided to continue his education in a military structure. We wish Max the best in his future endeavors and believe he will continue to lead others from the front. Max was the first in his senior class to receive his acceptance to a college-the Citadel, as well as the Army ROTC scholarship. Congratulations Max!” -Ed Benson, College Counselor and Service Academy Prep Program Director “Another Great Fit. After meeting and talking with Max and Jack, I knew that these brothers were special. Max Zappendorf, the Second Zappendorf I knew that he would do well and be a great fit at RMA. I am very proud to say after two years of winning the National Raiders Championship, tough Raider Camp, a great Raider season, and two JCLC & Leadership training classes, I confirmed my first statement of what a great fit. It turned out to be a win, win for Max and Riverside Military Academy. Thank you Zappendorfs Louie K.” -Payne LTC (Retired), US Army Senior Army Instructor, Riverside Military Academy “Congratulations to Max on his upcoming graduation. His hard work has paid off and his future is bright. He will do great at the Citadel.” -Senator Steve Gooch “In the 6 years I’ve known Max, he’s earned his Eagle Scout ranking, being an Outstanding Citizen of Dawson County 2017, and now graduating high school as an officer in the JROTC program. Congratulations and work even hard at The Citadel.” -Kevin Tanner, District 9, House of Representative “Max has done an outstanding job in my class. He’s on the production team that leads our commercials for our school’s new show, The Eagle News Network. His famous line of “Oh hey, I didn’t see you there,” has been a staple throughout this season. I wish him best of luck in his next steps. He’s truly been an asset for my team.” -Zach Garrett, RMA Alumnus ‘11 and Instructor of Video Production “Max has been a great addition to the AP Human Geography course this year. He has been a very active participant in class, and has used his experiences to contribute to our classroom discussions. He has certainly grown in his academic abilities and his understanding of the purpose and usefulness of Human Geography. Best of luck to Max at the Citadel next Fall!” -Jared Koldoff
