A friendly cat waits for his forever home in the newly renovated cat room at the Dawson County Humane Society. The humane society has been a no-kill shelter since 2011 and has found homes for more than 6,000 homeless animals in Dawson County since it opened 10 years ago. The Dawson County Humane Society is a hero for all homeless pets because the staff feeds them, plays with them, gets them medical treatment, spays and neuters them and loves them until they are adopted.

Game Warden Sgt. Lee Brown helps keep Dawson County safe and beautiful for all. He works for the law enforcement division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and oversees state parks, Lake Lanier and protected environmental areas like the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area. The law enforcement division of DNR is responsible for making sure lake goers practice boating safety, responding to calls regarding fish and wildlife, ensuring that hunters and fishers have proper licenses and keeping trespassers away from protected land.

A commemorative metal sculpture which currently stands at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawsonville pays respect to fallen soldiers. Allen Ferg, a well-known local sculptor and veteran, created the sculpture known as the Fallen Soldier Battle Cross. Veterans and active duty personnel are heroes to all United States citizens because they put their lives on the line to defend and protect the freedom and safety of others.

Dawson County Sheriff’s Office K9 officer Kimbo poses in front of his partner’s vehicle. Kimbo is one of the office’s three canine officers. He sniffs out drugs to help keep Dawson County schools, roads and community clean and safe. Kimbo also tracks down missing people, from thieves trying to hide from the police to children who have run away from home. Canine officers use their noses to track scents their human partners can’t track on their own, making canine officers just as much heroes as human officers.

Dawson County Emergency Services is responsible for responding to fires and medical emergencies in the community. When a house is on fire, local firefighters, EMTs and paramedics respond to put the out the fire, make sure everyone in the home is out safely and treat any injuries they may have. Paramedics and EMTs also respond to traffic accidents and medical emergencies and take people to the hospital in an ambulance.

Faye Wilson has been a bus driver for Dawson County Schools for 32 years. She currently shuttles Dawson County Junior High School students to the high school so that students can take their upper level classes, but she has made sure every grade level has made it to school safely during her career. Bus drivers are heroes to local schools systems because they are responsible for navigating the roads and safely bringing students to and from school every day.
