UNIVERSITY OF NORTH GEORGIA Founded 1873 140+ programs of study go.ung.edu/spotlight1

SHIFTING THE PARADIGM UNG’s Institute for Healthy Aging provides academic and community programming to enhance quality of life for older adults in north Georgia. Dr. Pamela Elfenbein has always had a passion for working with older adults. Now, as director of the Institute for Healthy Aging at the University of North Georgia, not only is Elfenbein providing UNG students with opportunities to expand their understanding of gerontology – the comprehensive study of aging and older adults, she is working to change the paradigm about aging on a broader level. “At the turn of the 21st century, a new life stage emerged – young/old, 65–75, where, for the most part, people are healthy; they’re not ready to retire. It’s this new stage of life that the institute’s efforts focus on,” Elfenbein said. The idea for the institute bubbled up from conversations among UNG leadership during planning sessions about potential degree programs for the future. “We recognized if we approached the older phase of life as a medical problem to be solved, we exacerbate how rapidly they decline,” said Dr. Chaudron Gille, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, adding the notion of 60 being old is a stereotype that doesn’t match with today’s reality. “We need to have a shift.” Elfenbein helped establish the Center for Healthy Aging in 2018 (elevated to Institute in 2020) to help orchestrate that shift. JUNE 2021

Considering about 30% of the population in north Georgia will be 65 and older in the next decade, the institute’s mission is timely and relevant. The institute oversees UNG’s academic offerings in gerontology, including a gerontology minor and certificates in gerontology for both undergraduate and graduate. The institute also coordinates intergenerational programming, events and research, including lectures, workshops, an oral history project and the annual Wisdom Project 2030 leadership educational series. “This is a big idea,” Elfenbein said. “We just have the courage to stand up and say we can do it.”

The University of North Georgia is part of the University System of Georgia and is designated as a State Leadership Institution and The Military College of Georgia. With about 20,000 students across five campuses located in Blue Ridge, Cumming, Dahlonega, Gainesville and Oconee, UNG is one of the state’s largest public universities.
