Krystal Arbogast didn’t start out with the homelife she wanted. It’s taken years. She just never gave up.

urn back the page to 1993. At age 14, Krystal, who is from a dysfunctional family, was pregnant with her first child. She was told she could no longer attend high school with her peers because she set a “bad example.” She was being sent to a school for pregnant teens called Second Chance. To Krystal, just the name was offensive, let alone the words “bad example.” She pleaded her case to the high school vice principal and was allowed to attend the school of her choice. One month into her freshman year, she gave birth to her son. But she couldn’t shake the words “bad example.” At the time, Krystal didn’t realize it, but her inner drive was to be the best example possible. Especially as a young mother. True to that, she became the first in four generations of her family to graduate from high school, but she didn’t do it quietly. Her senior year she was nominated to represent her high school as a state representative for an organization focused on jobs for graduates. It was in this capacity she attended a conference in Boston and gave her first public speech to 500 local educators and business owners about the importance of supporting youth and equipping them with the skills needed to excel in life. In that moment she knew she was destined to be a pioneer and inspire others to be their best, regardless of their circumstances. Now, the question became how. Her first husband and the father of her children was from San Sebastian, San Marcos in Guatemala. He often spoke of home and his family in Central America. Krystal began learning Spanish. After about a year and a half, she had mastered the language and to this day can speak it sans her Boston accent; a feat she’s proud of. But that’s not why she learned the language. Given her trying childhood, she yearned for an extended family. Krystal felt if she could master Spanish, perhaps she could better connect with her inlaws. Upon graduating from high school, she went to meet them. She not only fell in love with them, but she was also captivated with the entire Latino culture. Within the beauty, though, there were ashes. She vividly remembers the day a father begged her to take his daughter back to America where the child would have opportunities Guatemala couldn’t offer. That encounter never left her. Krystal eventually moved from Massa-
chusetts to Georgia, still determined to help people in Central America. She wrote a proposal and circulated it among area churches requesting support to start youth missionary work in Guatemala. Perimeter Church replied. Her first missions trip was through Medical Missions Ministry with Herman Alb. In true Krystal form, she asked Dr. Alb if she moved to Guatemala, would he continue making mission trips there. Within three months, Guatemala became her home. She began hosting missionary teams from the United States and was responsible for coordinating partnerships between the missionary ministry and local churches. Between helping with missions, Krystal also worked as an English teacher. It didn’t take long before she noticed a trend: students between the ages of 12 to 15 were either dropping out of school or simply not enrolling. She wanted to know why. Pressed to find the answer, she was told the children were migrating to the U.S. and Mexico for work. “It broke my heart,” she said. “I created a partnership with the city council, schools and churches to create a scholarship project called Youth Empowerment. With a $10,000 donation from a church in Boston, we were able to provide afterschool tutoring, youth mentorship, and scholarship funds to pay for three years of education costs for 65 at-risk students. I am still in contact with them to this day.” That’s not all that fills Krystal’s time. Health and family brought her back to Georgia. This summer, Krystal will open her own insurance agency and fulfill yet another goal. Through the agency, she intends to create scholarships for children in need. “We are in the process of creating a foundation to provide scholarships to children in Guatemala and provide support to children in need in Hall county. Our agency’s purpose is to provide a solid foundation to protect our community and to empower those around us.” Krystal’s husband, Jehovany, will be by her side. He’s a gifted artist who uses wood as his canvas. He’s able to create an exact likeness of a home’s exterior by burning it into a piece of wood. Pair that with Krystal’s art of brining people together and the Arbogasts have created more than a home; they have a sense of community. H

F
or more than a decade, Maria Fleming has been a regular customer of businesses operated by Tanya Grizzle. Fleming started with a single body wrap and later enjoyed facials. As Grizzle’s business evolved into cosmetic procedures and other health-related treatments, Fleming became a faithful client. About five years ago, she had liposuction. “I worked in the corporate world of sales and interacted with clients a lot,” she said. “Looking good and feeling good was a big thing, but the stress was killing me.” Then Grizzle approached Fleming with a surprising business opportunity more than a year ago. As a partner and co-owner of Vitality Ageless Center, Grizzle wanted to expand the business from its Duluth location in Gwinnett County to a second office in Gainesville. “Last July, Tanya Grizzle called me and asked if I wanted to be part of this new business venture,” Fleming said. “I went to my office and gave my two weeks’ notice.” Fleming did not know how that single action would change her life. Shortly into the partnership, Grizzle and Fleming attended a training conference when Grizzle noticed Fleming appeared sluggish and lacked energy. Grizzle suggested Fleming consider the BioTE hormone replacement therapy, which is offered at Vitality. Fleming agreed. Once they returned home, Fleming underwent some tests including blood work. For a woman in her 50s, the regular amount of testosterone in her body should have averaged between 150 and 250. Fleming’s level was at a five. Grizzle said this is a common occurrence in women 40 and older. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen women older than 40 whose hormone levels are good,” she said. “And it explains why we are tired and worn out all the time.” Grizzle then put Fleming on a regular BioTE hormone replacement therapy to correct the imbalance. The procedure involves inserting a BioTE pellet in the fatty tissue underneath the skin two to four times each year. The pellet, which is smaller than a grain of rice, provides a slow and steady release of hormones.

Fleming noticed a difference and over time her health improved in various areas. For example, she had been taking 14 pills to combat prediabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as medications to deal with those medications’ side effects. “I had gotten up to 200 pounds. I was unhappy and overweight and felt bad,” Fleming said. “Since I’ve been on BioTe since August 2018. I’m down to 153 pounds and wear a size 8.” She has also regained energy, causing her husband to have trouble keeping up with her newfound zeal. Therefore, he started hormone replacement therapy, too. “It totally transformed me,” she said. Both are regular clients of Vitality. Younge, 54, has received Botox injections and Juvederm fillers to counteract her weight loss related to her illnesses, including cancer. She said currently she weighs about 77 pounds on her 5-foot-4 frame. “I walked out of the hospital with a lot of saggy skin on my face,” she said. “They filled my face with filler so I didn’t look and feel like a skeleton.” Younge explained while the treatments such as Botox, Juvederm and facials improve her physical appearance, the time she spends with her nurses at Vitality improves her emotional wellbeing. “The nurses are great,” Younge said. “I love the staff so much. We are very close, and they know me when I call.” Haun feels the same way about Grizzle and the Vitality nurses, who are extensively trained on all of the medical equipment and procedures. She said her regular visits to receive Botox injections and other treatments acted as a respite while her husband was dying from Parkinson’s disease. She said the treatments helped her feel better, which had a ripple effect on her husband. “He couldn’t believe I kept looking so good,” Haun said. “My husband always said ‘You are so beautiful.’ It made him happy to see me happy. And that made me happy.” Now, Haun and Younge are happy Vitality has opened a new location in downtown Gainesville. Both said they will no longer have to fight traffic in Duluth to undergo treatments. “I went to the new location for the first time on Nov. 12 and it was fabulous!” Haun said. “They are going to help so many people.” Helping people is Vitality’s mission, Grizzle said. “We want to educate people on how to age healthier and happier, and that’s our goal,” she said. W
ith the start of a new year, it’s time for a new beginning. Many people have already adopted resolutions to better their lives in the coming months, and for women in need, one organization in Northeast Georgia can help ensure those goals are met. My Sister’s Place, a nonprofit located in Gainesville, offers shelter and assistance for homeless women and mothers with children. “It provides a place where women who are feeling broken, who are lost can go to receive hope,” said Tawana Finch, shelter manager. But the organization is more than just an overnight or emergency shelter. Brandee Thomas, executive director, said it’s a 90-day program that helps the women “overcome the obstacles that led to them being homeless.” “Our mission is to be a haven for a fresh start,” Thomas said. “Whatever the ladies need for that fresh start, we want to meet
them at that level and help them to build from there. For each resident, we come up with a case plan to help them be their best selves.” She shared the success story of Kay, a woman who recently stayed at the shelter with her 11-year-old son. “Before coming to us, (Kay) had been living in an extended-stay for two years with her son,” Thomas said. “She was working every day, but she just could not get enough money to be able to pay for their weekly hotel bill plus save for an apartment. So for two years, that was their life — sharing one hotel room.” Eventually, Kay missed one too many days of work because she was sick. She was unable to continue paying the hotel bill, so she sought refuge for her family at My Sister’s Place. “They moved in, she started building up her savings and she was ready to find them an apartment,” Thomas said. “In 90 days, she was able to do something she hadn’t been able to do on her own for two years.”

Thomas said the organization was able to help Kay and her son through the “Home for Good” program that launched this year thanks to a grant from United Way of Hall County. “For those individuals who successfully complete our program, we are able to provide financial support and case manage for them for the next 12 months,” she said about the grant. “We were actually able to help (Kay) through the program and help them with a deposit for their apartment so she did not have to deplete her savings.” And once the family secured an apartment, Kay’s son was able to get a special surprise. “Her son always kept talking about wanting a sleepover,” Thomas said. “The Friday they moved out, he got to have the sleepover he had been talking about for years and years. It just really touches your heart to be able to play a small role in that.” She said the shelter helps about 100 women in situations like this every year, although reaching a number is not the organization’s goal. “We’re never focused on the quantity as much as the quality of service that we’re able to provide for our ladies,” she said. “If they’re working the program, we want to support them for as long as they need.” She said the organization has been providing help since 2000 thanks to founder Marty Owens. “Marty started the organization officially in 2000, but prior to that, she was already in a position of helping homeless families and individuals in Gainesville anyway,” Thomas said. Owens said she launched My Sister’s Place after realizing an unmet need in the community. “There was a shelter for domestic violence, but there was nothing for just homeless women,” she said. “God laid it on my heart that this was something that I could do with his help.” Now almost 20 years later, the organization still offers assistance not only through the shelter but also its 90-day program, which includes life skills classes and help with money management. “We like to have a few classes each month, and they cover topics from nutrition to wellness, financial literacy, communication skills (and) job search skills,” Thomas said. “Once they do have income coming in, each of our residents is required to put a percentage of their earnings into a savings with us. When they move out, they get that entire percentage back so they’re able to pay for deposits and all those little things that add up once you’re ready to reestablish yourself.” Finch said My Sister’s Place plans to continue these activities and its mission in the years to come. “Maybe in the future, if it’s in God’s plans, expansion of another shelter or even transitional housing may come about,” she said. “But right now, it’s really just reaching as many women as possible and helping as many women as possible.” H
