Gift Guide FOR HOLID AY

SHOPPING

ith the holidays right around the corner, it’s time to make your list and check it twice in preparation for the giving season. Picking out the perfect gift for everyone on that list — from family and friends to even coworkers — can be a fun but sometimes difficult task. To help you get started, local stores in the North Georgia area listed popular presents for just about every type of person.

6 | HOME | November 2019

ABOVE: A holiday display at the Upsy Daisy.

SPORT FANS For those who love sports, you can never go wrong with collegiate items. Door signs, yard flags and even cups with teams’ logos make great gifts, and they’re available at stores like The Gift Box and Upsy Daisy in Gainesville. Staff at the shops also mentioned that grilling accessories, such as serving trays, platters and tea towels, are a good idea if your loved ones like to tailgate. But be sure to only purchase melamine dishware — a more durable, break-resistant material — for anyone who hosts outdoor parties.

FOOD JUNKIES Everyone likes a tasty treat, so it’s no surprise that edible gifts are trending this year. “Something that we as a store are really excited to see do well this season is all of our food items,” said Deanna Allbright, manager at Nest Feathers in Oakwood. “It’s stuff that you can’t go to Publix and find.” She said two of the most popular items are gourmet dips from Carmie’s Kitchen and Soberdough bread mixes. Keith Maxey, owner of The Gift Box, also mentioned some unique food gifts. “Probably our number-one selling thing is Captain Rodney’s,” he said. “It’s a sauce that you make a cheese dip with that is just amazing. And we carry a seasoning that you put on saltine crackers called Savory Saltine Seasoning.”

BUSY BEES Some people are always on the go, and they need a more practical present. One common and useful gift for teachers, friends and family alike is tumblers or drinkware. “It’s kind of a safe gift,” Waggoner said, mentioning her store sells brands like Corkcicle. “You can give anything from a coffee mug to thermoses.” But if they already have drinkware, give an umbrella. Dawn Parks, owner of Upsy Daisy, said her store has sold several Topsy Turvy umbrellas this year. “They’re inverted,” she said about the umbrellas. “So when you push them up, they turn inside out.”

HOMEBODIES If you’re shopping for someone who loves to lounge around the house, candles are sure to be a hit. Waggoner said her store has Tyler Candles and listed “Diva” and “High Maintenance” as the best scents. She said The Iron Rose even sells laundry detergent from the company, too. “They have detergents and other laundry items so that your bedding and clothing can have the fragrance,” she said. Another well-liked brand of candles is Swan Creek, which is most known for its stylish containers and essential oil fragrances. The candles can be purchased at Upsy Daisy.

HOSTESSES FASHIONISTAS Jewelry, clothes and handbags are always go-to gifts for people who keep up with the latest trends. Allbright said one of the most sought-after jewelry brands at Nest Feathers is Kendra Scott. “Kendra Scott is huge on social media right now,” she said, mentioning the brand carries earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Other lines like Pandora and Brighton are always popular, but homemade jewelry is making a hit this year, too. Tracy Waggoner, owner of The Iron Rose in Gainesville, said her store carries a brand called Funky Trunk. “It’s all one-of-a-kind pieces,” she said. As for clothes, Waggoner said lounge8 | HOME | November 2019

wear is a popular present, especially the line Barefoot Dreams. “There’s pieces you could sleep in or wear out,” she said. For men, belts are a good gift, like those from the company Mission Belt. The unique leather belts have no holes and feature interchangeable buckles to match anyone’s style. The company also sells belts for women, which can be purchased at The Iron Rose. But if you want to play it safe, you can always get the ladies in your life a handbag. One of the most popular brands this year is Canoe. The bags, which are manufactured in Blue Ridge, are all hide canvas or leather and available at The Iron Rose.

For the people in your life who love to entertain others, give them a gift they’ll use almost every weekend, like serveware. Two unique brands are Nora Fleming and Mud Pie. Nora Fleming offers a variety of basic serveware and small decorative pieces to attach called “minis.” “There’s minis for every occasion — fall, Christmas, birthday, everyday — and you take the minis and exchange them within your platter so it’s like you have a brand new piece for every season,” Allbright said. She said Mud Pie, which offers decorative platters, trays and dishes, is also a popular gift. “They sell really well,” she said. “We have everyday pieces, but then we also have holiday-specific pieces.” H

GET TO KNOW

Nestled in the middle of the Blue Ridge mountains, the city of Helen has made quite a name for itself. The Bavarian-style town attracts over a million visitors each year, and it will soon debut on TV as the backdrop for the new movie “Christmas Love Letter.”

City of Helen TO MAKE DEBUT ON LIFETIME

I

have always thought that Helen would be a perfect location for a Christmas movie,” said Cinnamon Spurlock, the city’s mayor. “I was beyond excited when the producer approached me.” The movie, produced by Sunshine Films of Miami, Fla., will air 6 p.m. EST Dec. 21 on the television network Lifetime. Producer Jacobo Rispa dubbed it as both a “Christmas movie” and “romantic comedy.” “The idea that inspired the movie is that everyone should be in love (at) Christmas time,” Rispa said. “I know it might sound naive, but it’s true. ‘Christmas Love Letter’ is a sweet story about coming back home, opening your heart and falling in love.” Lifetime’s website gives the following description of the film: “When relationship advice columnist Amalie Hess receives an unsigned love letter in a Christmas card, she returns to her hometown to solve the mystery of who sent it and maybe find true love.” Jerry Brown, executive director of the Convention & Visitors Bureau for Helen and White County, said the city of Helen’s name is actually used in the script. “From what I understood, the name was not added until they came,” he said about the production company. “The producer himself reached out to me and did the site visit, and during the two days I was showing them all the area, he called his director and said, ‘We have to do it here.’ So they had their script writer add in Helen as the town name.” — Jerry Rispa said the alpine village was the best spot for the film. “Helen is the perfect setting for a Christmas vacation,” he said. Brown echoed the sentiment, mentioning how much the city prepares for the holidays. “Every year the day after Thanksgiving, we do what we call the ‘Lighting of the Village’ when we have all the Christmas lights come on, and they stay on through mid-February,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of notoriety in the last two years. We have been on MSN.com as not only one of the best Christmas towns to visit in the United States but also in the world. Southern Living posted the same thing.” But preparing Helen for the film wasn’t easy.

Brown said the city had to hang all of those lights again last April, almost immediately after they were taken down. “The mayor pulled us all together as a team, and we all decorated the town for the Christmas movie,” he said. “It was a lot of work, but we were blessed to have a lot of hands. It only took us a little over a week to get all the decorations back up.” Brown said the production company was in town from the middle of April until May and filmed across the whole city. “They ended up kind of shooting all over, but there were specific spots,” he said. “Of course, right downtown at the bandshell where all the shops are located, they did a lot of the shots there. And across the street basically at Cowboys & Angels — they have a beautiful courtyard area they turned into a winter wonderland and did some of the shots there.” In addition to using the city’s scenery, though, the production company also recruited a handful of residents to be extras in the film. “There were over 200 extras needed for the movie,” Spurlock said. “When there are under 500 residents in the town, chances are that if you were interested in being an extra, you were. There was quite the buzz as filming was going on.” But despite the excitement throughout the small town, the filming didn’t interrupt any of the city’s daily operations. “They were great to work with us,” Brown said about the production company. “We at times would have to stop the traffic from coming through downtown because of the Brown noise, but that was just in ten-minute intervals just on one day. Other than that, they were able to film without impeding traffic or businesses and their operations were not affected.” The film has already brought in more than half a million dollars in economic impact to the area, and Brown expects both that impact and the number of visitors to continue to rise after “Christmas Love Letter” premieres in December. “We’re looking forward to the possible impact of visitors after the movie airs,” he said. “It would be just phenomenal for folks to see and find out who we are and what we have to offer during the holidays and throughout the year.” H

“It would be just phenomenal for folks to see and find out who we are and what we have to offer during the holidays...”

all is Home is an initiative birthed in response to the growing need for local foster homes for children in the custody of the Hall County Department of Family and Children Services. In addition, Hall is Home makes it a priority to mobilize community partners to meet the needs of the local foster care community and families impacted by it. Under the scope of the Hall is Home initiative, employees of the Hall County Department of Family and Children Services have worked cooperatively alongside other stakeholders in the child welfare system, including judges, Court Appointed Special Advocates, attorneys, foster parents, birth families, and other local private and public partners to work cooperatively to secure resources to improve the well-being of children in foster care. While each of these organizations and individuals have worked tirelessly for many years to ensure that all children in the custody of Hall County DFCS have an abundant and joyful Christmas, these dedicated and committed groups have banded together to streamline and coordinate their efforts in order to better serve our foster and relative care communities in anticipation of Christmas 2019. This year’s effort will seek the fulfillment of Christmas wish lists for approximately 400 children in the custody of Hall County DFCS and also those in relative care served by the CASA program and will culminate with a Christmas celebration provided by several generous sponsors for the children and their foster families. RECREATION

You’ve seen the commercials: gorgeous vistas, castle-lined waterways, smiling faces on board beautiful ships that promise dreams of a lifetime. So, are European river cruises really all they’re cracked up to be? You bet!

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CLYDE MORRIS

22 | HOME | November 2019

EUROPEAN RIVER

Cruising L

ast June, my girlfriend and I took the twoweek Viking Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest, and our experience should be instructive for taking a cruise with any of the various vendors. This is Viking’s longest river tour and they also run it in the reverse direction. There are 13 ports-of-call but if you want more, you can tack on extensions at either end of your cruise and even another cruise from Budapest south. We added a two-day Amsterdam extension at the beginning and were glad we did, but we wish we had added an extra day in Budapest and a Prague extension as well, since we were already over there and in vacation mode. If you’ve got the money and the time, go for it! This tour takes you on three rivers (the Rhine, Main, and Danube) and into four countries (Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Hungary). The ships most companies use for river cruising are BIG: ours was 440 feet long and 38 feet wide with 95 staterooms. Viking uses state-of-the-art propulsion via diesel generators running electric motors, which is

very quiet and smooth. This tour was not possible until 1992 when they connected the Main and Danube via the Main-Danube Canal, which, amazingly, Charlemagne started building back in the 8th century. The tour takes you from sea level to over 1300 feet and then back down to about 300 feet in Budapest, and you just couldn’t do that without locks unless you were in a kayak. But what few of us passengers realized was how many locks we would have to go through. There are 68. The whole thing is an enormous civil engineering feat, connecting the North Sea to the Black Sea. Life onboard is a blast. The ships are beautiful, the food is excellent, and Viking’s menu gives you a taste of each region as you travel through it. The bar is fully stocked, wines are varied, and the beer is so good you might think you’ve got a pipeline to a local brewhouse. There’s Happy Hour every day from 5:30-7:00 p.m. with live music, followed by dinner and continued live music ‘til 11:00 p.m. Breakfast offers everything you can think of, and lunch gives you a choice of a sit-down menu in the restau-

rant or a more limited menu on the Aquavit Terrace, an open-air deck at the bow of the ship. You really can’t go wrong with any choice. The passengers — about 185 on our ship — are mostly retirees, 60-ish and up. But we are young-at-heart and adventurous, and found plenty of similar couples aboard. Fellow tourists come from all over: primarily American, but also a good number of Australians, Canadians, and Asians. But the biggest attractions are the fabulous shore excursions, from biking the largest collection of windmills in the world to walking on the roof of the immense Cologne cathedral. There are castles and palaces and museums galore, and even an ancient walled town where you can still walk the top of the original, well-preserved wall. In Nuremberg you can tour the Nazi parade grounds and the courtroom where the war crime trials were conducted. The many river towns like Regensberg offer opportunities to eat outdoors riverside and then stroll to a great pastry restaurant for dessert. In Passau we enjoyed a fourpiece concert on the world’s largest church pipe organ. At Melk we took a tour of the enormous, 900-year-old

Benedictine Abbey. During “Scenic Sailing,” we soaked in the glory of the mountainous German countryside on our ship’s sundeck as the Danube wound its enchanting course. And in Krems we toured the most unusual winery we’ve ever seen — a truly multisensory and multimedia experience. In short, the quality is high and the variety endless. Tour prices vary among operators and depend on the level of stateroom and time of year. A very popular choice is the French balcony, which has a sliding-glass door instead of a porthole. A full balcony stateroom gives you a couple extra feet of room between the bed and the sliding-glass door. In crowded ports like Vienna and Budapest, Viking has so many ships that it must dock them side-by-side, so your balcony might be looking at the side of a sister ship while you’re in port, which diminishes the usefulness of a full balcony. And to be sure to get some Euros; Netherlands vendors accept credit cards but the Germans, Austrians, and Hungarians largely require cash. In a nutshell, river cruising is every bit as fabulous as you think it is. Indulge yourself and see why it’s become so popular! H

GIFT GUIDE

Holiday gifts

FOR FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY MEMBERS

H

oliday shoppers who are busy making lists and checking them twice should make sure they don’t overlook the family pet. Christmas has gone to the cats and dogs, as a greater number of people include their companion animals when selecting gifts each year. A study by OnePoll conducted by Rover.com, the nation’s largest network of dog sitters and walkers, found that 95 percent of pet owners have bought holi-

NATURAL PET PRODUCTS Just as people are interested in protecting the health of the planet and their own personal health, so, too, are they extending this concern to companion animals. Natural pet products, which can include natural flea and tick remedies, holistic foods, organic items, and all-natural grooming products, can make great gifts.

SPECIALTY PET SERVICES The American Pet Products Association says the demand for high-end pet grooming and other services is substantial. In addition, personalized training, behavioral con-

day gifts for their pets. Gifts can range from everyday needs, like food and treats, to more lavish extravagances like spa treatments. Pet owners who plan to get their pets gifts this year may want to consider some of the emerging pet trends as they browse wares and services. The Balance, a business, career and industry information site, says pet industry trends point toward these segments seeing growth.

sulting, portrait photography, dog sitting, and upscale spa treatments like pet Reiki and massage are booming.

MOBILE PET GROOMING Mobile pet grooming has become the norm in many areas. Mobile pet grooming can reduce the potential stress on animals, and tends to be very convenient for customers, particularly seniors and others who have mobility issues. Beyond these growing trends, pet owners have a bevy of other ideas from which to choose. Here are just a few different suggestions:

• tests to detect pets’ DNA and trace breed and ancestry, • interactive puzzles to keep pets engaged and banish boredom, • stylish storage baskets for pet toys, • hidden cat litter or dog crate items that camouflage commonly used pet items, • heated pet bed for cozy nights and mornings, and • signature vests, coats and sweaters to look good and remain comfortable. Pet gifts are popular this time of year, ensuring all members of the family have a treat to open. H November 2019 | HOME | 25
