INSPIRATION THROUGH CHARITABLE EFFORTS Being charitable is rewarding, not only to those on the receiving end of others’ good deeds but also for those doing the giving. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health found participants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need.

CHARITIES THAT HELP CHILDREN IN NEED Having a child or becoming a parent or caregiver to a youngster can change a person profoundly. Perhaps that’s why many people will rally to do whatever is necessary to offer assistance when children become sick, injured or need help. Children’s charities can pluck at the heartstrings, but prospective volunteers or donors should still do their homework and research a given charity before deciding to help. Charity Navigator, the Better Business Bureau and other watchdog groups are great sources of reliable information that can help prospective donors make smart giving decisions. Researching children’s charities also may shed light on some of the lesser known charities that do excellent work. The following are a handful of children’s charities whose missions may resonate with those who want to help. 6 | 2019 DAWSON COUNTY NON-PROFIT GUIDE | Friends of Dawson

LEANA NORRELL DAWSON COUNTY

Dawson

Hall

Forsyth

Leana Norrell had plans to be your typical working mother. But life had other plans. When her infant son was diagnosed with a brain tumor – which led to a 127-day hospital stay and, eventually, a seizure disorder for the now 2-year-old Colton – Leana put her professional life on hold to attend to her son. Depending solely on husband Christopher’s income meant the Norrells, for the first time, began to worry about food – including proper nutrition for Colton. However, one of Georgia Mountain Food Bank’s 70 partnership agencies put those fears to rest. Dawson County’s Ric Rack food pantry not only provides key nutrition for the Norrells – it also provides emotional support and hope for a family that must focus its energy on something much more precious.

GIVE HOPE.

GIVE TO GEORGIA MOUNTAIN FOOD BANK.
