Tips for effective remote learning Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. An increased reliance on virtual home instruction has many students rethinking their organizational strategies and daily school schedules. Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. Stick to a schedule Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them.
Stick to tools that work Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. Check student accounts frequently Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. Students should be sure to check school email accounts or other places where teachers post assignments a few times per day so that they stay on top of all assignments and are aware of due dates. Reach out to instructors
When learning at home, students should strive to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible, including bedtimes, wake times, hours devoted to learning, and time to get outside or engage in downtime activities.
Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.”
Connect live if possible
Stay in touch with guidance, if needed
There are many free tools and resources available that enable teachers to provide live video lessons or to record them so students can watch them later. Similarly, social networking apps and virtual meeting programs enable students to connect digitally. This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face.
Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them.

WHAT ARE ALL THOSE MARKERS YOU SEE IN THE LAKE? Red and Green Markers
As you may know the lake was formed by damning the Chattahoochee River. The Chestatee River flowed into the Chattahoochee. The red and green markers you see along the sides of the lake define those and other channels. For the Chattahoochee the numbering system begins at the dam. As you move away from the dam you will find red markers with even numbers on your right (or starboard) side and green markers with odd numbers on your left (or Port side). The numbering system increases as you move farther away from the dam. If you see #2 red going away from the dam you know you are fairly close to the dam and on the right side of the channel. On the other hand if you see #31 green you have moved much further up the channel and are on its left side. The markers in the Chattahoochee channel do not have any letters on them. But what about those markers with letters on them? They help identify the specific channel or creek you are in. Similarly, their numbering starts at the mouth of the creek or channel and increases as you move up into the channel. So if you see a red marker with 2TH for example you know you are near the mouth of Thompson Creek and if you see 10 TH you know you have moved well up the channel. The green marker you see outside of our marina as you head towards Marina Bay has a 15C on it. This indicates you are on the old Chestatee River channel and fairly far way from the mouth.
By the way you never want to go between the marker and shore because you would be out of the channel and it could be very shallow so keep this one to your left (port) when heading up. Most good charts of Lake Lanier show these markers and their numbers on the chart, so by referring to them you should be able to figure out where you are.
Cylindrical Floating Buoys These are for information or are regulatory. They sometimes have lights sometimes not. They may have different symbols on them if they do this is what they mean: • Diamond shape alerts to a hazard like; • Circle indicates a restricted area like;
rocks
No wake, slow speed with a cross on it Boats prohibited like; a swimming area • Square information like; gas dock, boat ramp • Diamond
Its hard to make out the circle and the word “wake” but this is the floating buoy right outside our docks.

Harbour Point • Website Enhancements Here’s a quick update on enhancements you’ll find on the Harbour Point website.
• Icons on the Home page give you quick access to the most frequently referenced information. On your desktop, hover your mouse over an icon for a short description of what it does.
From left to right, you can access the Resident Directory, current Compass newsletter, Harbour Point Facilities & Events Calendar, Trash & Recycling FAQs, Keypad Codes (and clubhouse wifi password), Most Recent Financials, and Most Recent Approved Board Meeting Minutes.
• From the main menu, select Submit HPCA Request to see a list of requests you can make straight from the website; new forms have been added so you can order gate clickers and key fobs, request vehicle stickers, request a closing letter, submit a guest list to the gate attendants, and more.
Under this menu option, you can also find forms to be printed, signed, and submitted as well as forms for relevant 3rd party vendors. Check out information on our new mailbox vendor here.
• Under the new FAQs menu option, you’ll find answers to the most commonly asked questions about Trash & Recycling, the Front Entrance (including gate attendant hours), Dry Boat Storage, Keypad/Fob and Wifi Access, Racquet Club & Basketball, Septic System, and your Website Account.
Love having keypad codes and the clubhouse wifi password available on the website but hate having to type in “harbourpointlakelanier.com” each time on your phone? Check out how to Add Website Icon to Your Phone or Tablet under FAQs.
• The Board, Committees, and Activities Contacts page has been updated so you can find the right person for any question or issue that might arise.
• Covid has wreaked havoc with so many activities; it can be hard to know what’s happening and what’s postponed. The website Harbour Point Facilities & Events Calendar now reflects which activities are active and which are currently on hold, so you don’t have to guess.
• At the August Board meeting, residents requested access to the recent roads study that was discussed. The study can be found on the website by going to the Documents menu item, selecting Documents from the Board, and looking for Financials > Reserve Studies > 2020 06 05 Road Evaluation Contour Engineering.
We’re working on other enhancements to make the website more useful and friendly. Coming soon, expect access to a printable version of the Resident Directory. If you want to exclude your phone number(s) and/or email address(es) from the directory, go to the Website Account FAQs for instructions. Need to set up a website account? If your email is already on file, you can go to harbourpointlakelanier.com, click the “Register” button, and enter your email address in the field below “Registration with Email Address” to get an email with information on setting up your account. If you need further help or have other questions, please email webmaster@harbourpointlakelanier.com. 10
