Harbour Point Wednesday Night Card Group At the end of April, well into the Pandemic, the Harbour Point Wednesday Night Card Group began to show signs of withdrawal. Something had to be done. The group decided to play using the internet. The dealer would deal out the individual hands and e-mail a hand to each player. Then a short time later the Flop, the first three community cards, would be mailed to all players; followed by the last two cards, the Turn and the River. Each player would determine his best hands and send an e-mail back to the dealer. The winners would be announced and points awarded.
The card games are typically followed by a lively discussion about the week’s activities, Harbour Point news and travel plans that had to be canceled or scheduled once the Covid restrictions have ended. The virtual game does not compare with the camaraderie of face-to-face playing, but it is a close second.
In early July after some 35 hands of this type, with no end in sight to the Pandemic, it was decided that we would branch out to the new trend and employ Zoom. Every Wednesday, sixteen individual hands are dealt to each player and e-mailed to them. That night via Zoom the five community cards for each hand are revealed and shown on the Zoom screen. There is betting as appropriate and the bets are tallied using an Excel spreadsheet. Points are then awarded to the winners. October 2020

KIDNEY CANCER RESEARCH AT WINSHIP A REPORT FOR THE CHRISTOPHER CHURCHILL FOUNDATION | 2020
MORE RECENT HIGHLIGHTS OF DR. MASTER’S RESEARCH
GENEROUS DONORS HELPED US IDENTIFY KIDNEY CANCER-FIGHTING CELLS Donor support this past year accelerated kidney cancer research at Winship Cancer Institute, including a breakthrough published in the most-read scientific journal in the world, Nature. These findings could provide doctors with vital clues about how the immune system prevents cancer from recurring. Most of the kidney tumors in this research were resected by Viraj Master, MD, whom you support through the Christopher Churchill Fund for Renal Cancer Research. Dr. Master’s work relies on the tumor bank, a critical resource that increases weekly and includes 1,923 samples from patients with renal masses, across eight time points. In January 2019, we had enrolled 459 patients; by February 2020 that number was 710. Thus 251 new patients were enrolled in just over one year. Using tumor samples, Dr. Master’s team (pictured from left: Carey Jansen, Nataliya Prokhnevska, Haydn Kissick, and Viraj Master) showed in the research published in Nature that surviving kidney cancer is linked to the amount of cancer fighting cells in the tumor. This discovery could also help doctors expand and better target immunotherapy, which has produced dramatic results in some patients. This work could apply more broadly to other cancers, too. The critical question now is increasing the number of patients who get more immune cells into their kidney cancers, and to better understand the mechanisms for doing so, Dr. Master has submitted a new RO1 NIH grant. Because the amount of cancerfighting cells differ by person, treatment has depended on if and when kidney cancer reappears. This research could help us predict and treat who is most likely to experience recurrence.

— Submission of a VA Merit Grant, for support of investigator-initiated research; Dr. Master is an eligible VA investigator at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. — Kidney cancer research with experts across multiple institutions including Georgia Tech, Atlanta VA Medical Center, the University of Georgia, and University of Massachusetts. — Continued development of urine and blood diagnostic tests; both now in revised and upgraded versions undergoing analysis in expanded patient cohorts. — Team member Carey Jansen won the 2019 Department of Urology Research Retreat competition. — Provided support for training multiple medical students in their discovery rotation, graduate students and postdocs in the Kissick Lab, and Summer Undergraduate Program in Emory Renal Research awardee Natalie DeMars. A VALUED PARTNERSHIP Your support for Dr. Master through the Christopher Churchill Fund for Renal Cancer Research is highly valued at Winship Cancer Institute. Your support has been instrumental in continuing to push the boundaries of research and patient care, helping pioneer new drug therapies and improve patient outcomes. All of us at Winship join me in gratitude for the difference your gifts are making. Together, we are bringing hope and healing to patients and forging new pathways

Georgia Department of Public Health Georgia Onsite Sewage Management Systems Don’t Flush Your Money Down The Drain Additives and Your On-site Sewage Management System Background With hundreds of products currently on the market, and some environmental engineering companies promoting their use, many homeowners have questions about septic tank additives. The Georgia Department of Public Health’s Land Use Program is dedicated to educating the public and wastewater practitioners about on-site wastewater issues and our position is clear: Additives are not beneficial to on-site sewage management systems and, in fact, can be detrimental!
A. - Positively not! Some manufacturers claim that biological additives enhance treatment within the tank or can eliminate pumping by liquefying solids and grease. In fact, the additives can cause solids to break down into smaller particles that remain in suspension in the liquid within the tank. That combination of liquid containing small solids can flow into the drain-field and may lead to clogging. A clogged drain-field can be a nuisance and very expensive to correct. Q. - How can a product that says it will keep my septic tank unclogged be harmful?
So - What Is An Additive? You might have heard them referred to as; septic tank treatments, cleaner, restorers, rejuvenators, or enhancers. They are all “additives” and they fall into two categories.
• Chemical additives are marketed to unclog drains and
break up oil and grease. They may contain acids, solvents, hydrogen peroxide, or strong caustic agents. Some types of chemical additives are prohibited in Georgia.
• Biological additives are made from bacteria, yeast, or
enzymes. They are marketed as starter agents or as aids in routine maintenance.
FAQ- Frequently Asked Questions Q.- Is it true that some additives are necessary to give bacteria a “head start” when the system is new or recently pumped? A. -Absolutely not! By design, an on-site sewage management system (commonly referred to as a septic system) does not need any help doing its job. The natural, biological process by which the system works requires only the bacteria that it receives from wastewater. Q. - Is it true that “natural” additives, like those containing enzymes; bacteria, or yeast, can reduce or eliminate the need to pump the tank?
10
A. - Acids and other chemical solvents can upset or destroy the basic physical and biological functions of the septic tank: to separate the solids from the liquid, trap the solids, and cause those solids to break down. Chemical types of additives can cause solids to break into smaller pieces that stay suspended in the liquid within the tank. When those solids move out of the tank and into the drain-field, they can lead to clogging. In addition, acids in some additives can actually corrode concrete septic tanks and distribution boxes, causing them to leak, become weak and fall apart. A whole new septic system can cost between eight and twenty thousand dollars to replace. Q. - But I’ve used additives before, and there seem to be initial improvements with my system. A. - What seem like initial improvements are short-lived gains with a big trade-off! If you don’t address the underlying problem, it will return and the repair could be a Jot more costly the longer you wait. So save your money! Additives can cost hundreds of dollars; but they will never eliminate the need for regular septic system inspection and pumping, which will do far more toward extending the life of your system and preventing unnecessary repairs or replacement.
