Property Maintenance Check List from the HPCA Covenants Crew The following is a checklist for you for general Maintenance tasks that you could consider doing or verifying as complete or ok. This effort is to identify areas that are important to maintain your home and property but may have been overlooked or forgotten. Some are critical to the health of your home. These tasks will enhance your property and its long-term value and will definitely save you money. In addition, a number of these ensure you are compliant with the HPCA Covenants and Guidelines. In the event you need recommendations for someone to help perform these tasks, ask a neighbor or review contractors and service companies on The HPCA website. Summer 2020 in Harbour Point • Check bathtubs and showers for deteriorating caulk or damaged tile. • If your home faucets run slow or have a dispersed flow, check the screen in the faucet tip. Sometimes, just using a product like CLR can clean up the mineral build-up in your faucet. • Check all appliances for the need for filter replacements or cleaning (dust build up). This makes for more efficient appliances and, overall, saves you $$$. • Clean algae and mildew off roof shingles and cedar shakes. Most contractors use environmentally safe solutions for roofs, sidewalks, and driveways. Not doing so allows that mildew to spread to neighboring rooftops and can damage your own rooftop. Plus, it’s important that this action is taken to remain compliant with the HCPA Guidelines. • Make certain to pressure clean your brick, siding or stucco walls and other outside home surfaces of all mildew. This improves the look of your home and sometimes keeps you from having to paint. That’s always a nice thing to discover…..no painting! Stay safe and stay well, neighbors, Your Covenants Crew June 2020

Harbour Point

Rides

Shane and Christina Brooks joined the Harbour Point community about five years ago and, like so many of our residents, they have a “thing” for that special ride. Growing up in Florida, Christina developed a love for pickup trucks from her uncle who would take her for fun rides in the nearby rural areas. For sure, you can’t escape from those fun memories of your youth. She loved the older styles for their classic lines and always wanted to have one of her own. About six years ago, Shane found the perfect birthday gift for Christina, a 1956 Ford Custom Cab pickup truck located in Iowa. Hey, Iowa, that’s nothing! A transport truck and an open area at the Publix supermarket parking lot, for off-loading, took care of any obstacles that distance created! Christina has only had to make a few modifications to the truck as it was in pristine, original condition when purchased. The 1956 model was a “one off ” year for the truck with a wrap around windshield. Of the 14,000 built, about 6,200 models were built with a wrap-around rear window. This immaculate, unique truck has that, more rare, wrap-around rear window making it even more special. Fewer than 600 of this model remain, and not many in in the mostly original condition as this show winner. Christina and Shane have enjoyed attending and showing her truck at car meets where it has won “Best Original” in a number of competitive events. Christina with her 1956 Ford pickup “Tucker”

Powered with a 272 cubic inch V8 power plant, the 172 HP engine pushes the truck nicely down the road. This was one of the more powerful engines for the period. The rear deck of the truck has the original wood flooring and the front and rear windows are still original. Christina is really proud of this truck and Shane is really happy to have found that perfect birthday gift that he can share with his wife. When you see Christina or Shane around the community, be sure and ask them about their adventures with their truck. It will make for a great conversation starter and you will hear some interesting stories. Look forward to other Harbour Point car enthusiast stories…

Let nature give you relaxation. Many of us are under great stress due to the current health situation. My suggestion is to let nature give you relaxation. There is scientific evidence that patients looking out a window at a natural scene heal faster than those looking at a brick wall. So, go for a walk or golf cart ride and let nature give you some comfort…and you may even discover tulips in the neighborhood. Did you know that we have many “deer proof” tulips growing right here in Harbour Point? That’s right, they are “deer proof” because the deer can’t reach them. If that doesn’t make sense…read on. Here is a photo I took last night (Tuesday, May 20th). It is a photo of a tulip flower…on a tulip poplar ( Liriodendron tulipifera). It is one of our native plants and is in the Magnolia family.

You may say, “Well, I’ve never seen one in Harbour Point.” That is probably because this is what you see when driving by.

Now look up...

La voila! There is the “deer proof” tulip flower. The secret to finding the trees is to look for big leaves and the distinctive shape of the leaves.

Now that you know how to identify the tree, you will notice them on almost every undeveloped lot in Harbour Point. Enjoy your next tour of the neighborhood. For a more complete description of the tulip poplar go to: http://gardeningsoul.blogspot.com/search?q=tulip+poplar. This is a wonderful blog about all things native. Harbour Point Resident, Drew Dupont, made a custom heart-shaped face mask for his cardiologist wife - and the design is free to download.

The Duponts and the face mask.

Allison Dupont, a cardiologist, is working on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Fearful that her hospital might run out of personal protective equipment like N95 masks, her husband Drew designed her a mask to wear to work.

for a frontline worker who’s being exposed directly to a COVID patient.”

“He really just wanted to make one for me, and make a cute one,” Dupont told Insider. “Since I’m a cardiologist, he wanted it to have a heart with an EKG rhythm on it. He made it perfect for me, and a lot of people wanted it.”

Allison Dupont shared a photo of her custom mask on Facebook, where it received over 18,000 shares — and

He redesigned the mask to protect essential workers by stripping the design down to the base mask and then adding the equivalent of an N95 filter.

Now, the Duponts have been running their two 3D printers almost non-stop to produce more N95-equivalent face masks. They’ve been donating them to doctors and nurses in their area and around the country to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. A software engineer by trade, Drew Dupont based his mask design off a pre-existing template he found on Thingiverse, a website where users can share digital designs. “The way that they had it designed didn’t quite make sense for what was needed,” he said. “They were just talking about using charcoal filters and inserts and other things that wouldn’t be easy to come by or very effective 12

interest ballooned from there. People, especially other hospital employees, were concerned about the N95 mask shortage and wanted a 3D-printed mask of their own.

feels better knowing that she has Drew’s 3D-printed mask on hand if she needs it. She knows some people who are already using their own masks.

Since then, the couple have donated around 80 masks to hospital employees. Each mask takes around five hours to 3D print. They’ve also shared the link on Thingiverse so others can print it themselves. It has already been downloaded several thousand times, according to the Duponts. Drew also added a blank template so people can put their own spin on the mask’s design.

“The biggest worry I have is not really me getting sick so much as bringing it home to my family. The scary thing about this virus is there are so many people walking around carrying this virus that are asymptomatic,” she said.

However, the mask hasn’t been FDA approved, so the couple recommends testing it first to make sure that the mask has a good seal. Healthcare workers need to wear filtration masks because fabric and surgical masks don’t protect against COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control recommends fabric face masks to the general population — not medical professionals.

“All of us are worried,” she said. “No one has had a decent night’s sleep in the last month in healthcare anyways.”

Her heart goes out to the nurses and doctors who work in the ICU with COVID-19 patients all day.

“[Fabric masks] aren’t really to protect you,” she said. “They don’t filter the virus when you’re breathing in air, but they do prevent droplets from spreading everywhere.” So far, Dupont said she’s been lucky because the hospital she works at hasn’t ran out of N95 masks, but she still
