AGE • In Georgia, you must have a valid driver’s license or permit in order to drive a golf cart alone. Anyone who is above the age of 12 can operate a golf cart as long as they are accompanied by a licensed driver who is an adult (18 years or older). • Anyone 16 and older with a valid driver’s license can drive unless their license has been suspended. • No drivers under the age of 12

EQUIPMENT • Carts must have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints. A windshield, turn indicators, braking lights and headlights are required if operating at night. • The carts must weigh less than 1,375 pounds and not top speeds of 20 mph. The carts must also be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

SAFETY • Everyone in the cart should keep their arms/ legs inside the vehicle at all times. • There should never be more people in your cart than there are seats. • Everyone should use the golf cart restraints while the cart is in motion. • Do not drive your cart with anyone standing or sitting on the back, side or front platforms. • Focus on the road. Distracted driving is the number one cause of accidents. • Left hand turns are more hazardous than people believe. Check your blind spots and use turn signals. • When driving your cart, always yield to pedestrians.

TURF DAMAGE Please be mindful of the turf damages that are caused by golf carts in common areas and on private property. The HOA has made several irrigation repairs to broken sprinkler heads run over by golf carts. Please watch your surroundings and be considerate of others’ property. GOLF CART INSURANCE Most homeowner insurance policies do not cover golf carts off the homeowner’s property. This can be a significant liability to golf cart owners involved in accidents. Golf cart insurance is inexpensive and offered by most insurance companies. Golf cart owners can be held both civilly and criminally liable for damages or injuries caused by their carts.

Hamilton Mill is joining in on a fun Halloween tradition . called ‘BOO-ing’. Many homes already participate. Maybe you’ve seen the ‘Ghosts’ in the windows of your neighbors’ homes. It’s a fun way to get the kids & the whole neighborhood excited about Halloween. How do you do it?? Look for a neighbor’s home without a GHOST in the window. Next, secretly set a Halloween basket of treats (along with a ghost to display in the window & an explanation sheet) at the door…then…ring the doorbell and RUN!! Please do not BOO your neighbors later than 8pm. Each house that is BOOed does the same for two more neighbors & the fun continues throughout the neighborhood.

Meet Our New Activities Director Hamilton Mill’s social committee would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Activities Director, Angela Pavlichek – a current Hamilton Mill resident for over 20 years. Although new to this part time position in HM, she brings many years of experience as she has served as Activities Director at Sterling on the Lake for 2 years and has also been the Activities Director for Reunion Country Club for the past 10 years. During her many years as a Hamilton Mill resident, Angela has taken time to volunteer with and help grow our community through the swim team, social and grounds committees.

Angela clearly loves planning and organizing social events. We look forward to continuing many of our current activities and traditions as well as adding new events that she is busy planning for us. She is the perfect fit for this position, and we are so glad she has joined our team! If you see her, please welcome her as our new director and ask how you can get involved in the planning, organization and execution of events that make Hamilton Mill the fun community that we all enjoy! WHIP UP A

Classic Fall Treat Halloween treats take center stage in October. What can be better this time of year than a fresh autumn apple coated in a sweet candy shell? This quintessential fall treat can make Halloween celebrations even more special. This recipe for ‘Old-Fashioned Caramel Apples,’ courtesy of ‘300 Best Homemade Candy Recipes’ (Robert Rose) by Jane Sharrock, benefits from the fall harvest while also paying homage to a classic Halloween treat. Old-Fashioned Caramel Apples Makes 12 12 2 1 2/3 1/2 1 1 2 2

medium apples cups granulates sugar cup packed light brown sugar cup light corn syrup cup butter or margarine cup half-and-half (10%) cream or evaporated milk teaspoon salt teaspoons vanilla extract cups chopped pecans, 11/2 cups sweetened flaked

coconut or 2 cups crisp rice cereal (optional) 1. Wash and dry the apples. Remove the stems. Insert a popsicle stick into the stem end of each apple, using a twist-like motion so that the apple will not split. 2. Cover a large countertop area or a large baking sheet with waxed paper. 3. In a large heavy kettle over medium-low heat, bring the granulated and brown sugars, corn syrup, butter, half-andhalf and salt to a boil, stirring until the sugars dissolve and the mixture begins to boil. Cook, gently stirring to prevent scorching, to the firm ball stage (246 F). Stir in the vanilla. 4. Remove from the heat. Cool until the mixture thickens slightly. Hold each apple by the wooden skewer and quickly twirl into the caramel, tilting the pan to cover the apple with caramel. Remove the apple from the caramel, allow the excess caramel to drip into the pan and then twirl the apple again to spread the caramel smoothly over the apple. Use a spoon to coat any part of the apple not covered with caramel. If desired, roll the coated apples in the toppings before the caramel sets. Place on the waxed paper until the coating is firm. Store in a cool place.
