A Message from the Board Many of us have lived in Hamilton Mill for an extended period of time. We love our homes and our community for many reasons, including beautiful architecture, manicured lawns, aesthetic common areas, numerous amenities, quality schools, fine restaurants, and abundant shopping. It is a wonderful place to live, work, and play while raising a family and socializing with friends and neighbors. This time of year is especially wonderful because of warmer temperatures, outside activities, and prevalent seasonal colors. One important reason that we all enjoy such a desired quality of life here in Hamilton Mill relates to the standards that were established when this development was launched over 20 years ago. We were attracted to a community with a master plan for sustaining this elevated standard of living while protecting our property values. Upon our arrival in Hamilton Mill during the closing on our house, we were all introduced to three important documents: 4 | Hometown Herald | June 2016
1) By-Laws 2) Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions 3) Design Guidelines These documents serve as the foundation for supporting one another in maintaining our residential community in a manner that we can all appreciate. Through First Service Residential (FSR), our management staff monitors our neighborhoods regularly to ensure adherence to the established standards that enhance the beauty of our community and keep our property values strong. All seven, elected members of your Board of Directors are committed to enforcing these standards that ultimately maintain the beauty and livability of our community. Whether enforcement and notification of violations relates to the condition of lawns, exterior paint colors, parking of recreational vehicles, mailbox maintenance, planned additions to homes or any number of other issues, they all collectively impact our quality of life in Hamilton Mill. The Hamilton Mill Board of Directors invites
and encourages open dialogue in addressing the enforcement of our property standards. All of us would do well to review the standards we embraced by moving into this community and hold our ourselves accountable for understanding those standards and adhering to them. For residents who may receive a notification of a covenant violation related to their own property, we simply ask that you address the need in a timely fashion and acknowledge that this process is all about working together to support one another. If there is a question or any confusion about any standard or notice, please reach out to FSR staff to resolve the concern. Of course, it is always acceptable and appropriate to communicate any unresolved concern to a Board member if necessary. The Board thanks all of our neighbors for the opportunity to serve. We look forward to a season of fun in the sun here in our beautiful and award winning community.

We start the festivities at 3PM with a focus on the kids, because when they are happy, we are happy! Right! We bring back the GIANT WATER SLIDE as well as our JOLLY BALLOON MAKER. The kids LOVE IT! That’s not all…we will have all kinds of games and prizes at and in the pool! (Think cannonball/belly flop contests and races!) The adults can begin to let loose (along with the kids too) as LUNA SEA BAND begins to set the mood poolside. Getting hungry? Well, right around 4PM the VARSITY FOOD TRUCK opens for business and you can grab delicious meals (at affordable prices) for you and the family! That’s not all, for dessert, hit up the FREE ICE CREAM, SNOWCONES and other treats. YUM! Then just sit back, crack a cold one and enjoy the music, slide, pool, sun and food. Around 7pm come see the LIVE MACAWS (those are birds…for fun, not eating, HA!) and experience BUBBLEMAN as he creates his amazing bubbles poolside. How fun!! Geesh, it’s like Disney World out here! Here’s the kicker…we’re still not done yet! There is a FINALE!! Around 8PM we will start to gather on the lawn for the BIG BANG! The excitement will build as the finale approaches, and just before it begins, we scheduled LIVE PATRIOTIC MUSIC that will gear us up for the highlight of the event. As dusk falls and it gets darker, the FIREWORKS begin! Wow! What an incredible day! We ask just one favor. To make these events as wonderful as they can be for you, we need to estimate attendance (for food, events, prizes, seating etc…) IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND, PLEASE LOG IN TO HMILL.COM AND FIND THE LINK TO RSVP ON THE HOME PAGE!
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Hamilton Mill Association News
Father’s Day: A History Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, a loving daughter from Spokane is renowned as the founder of Father’s Day. It was only through her relentless struggle and firm determination that fathers everywhere are officially given their due respect. Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in over thirty countries around the world. When children of all these countries celebrate the day by expressing gratitude for their father, they also owe a “thank you” to Sonora as it was she who thought of the idea of celebrating Father’s Day and did everything to ensure that the idea succeeded in its true spirit. Sonora was born to William and Ellen Smart at Jenny Lind, Arkansas in 1882. When Sonora was five, the Smart family moved West in search of better life and got settled in Spokane, Washington. When Sonora was 16 years old her mother died while giving birth to her sixth child. Eldest of all children, Sonora realized the enormity of hardships that were to be faced by her father - a Civil War veteran in raising the family. She watched him take care of children with devotion and making endless sacrifices so that his children had a good life. Fairly mature at the age of 27, Sonora listened to a Sunday Sermon on Mother’s Day in 1909. A loving daughter of a devoted father, Sonora wondered if we have a day honoring our mothers, why is there no corresponding day to honor all fathers. The question left a deep impression on her mind and she resolved to get fathers their due respect in society.
12 | Hometown Herald | June 2016
Her campaign bore success as people by and large accepted the need to recognize the important role played by a father in raising a child. Soon the day came to be celebrated in several cities across US. Observing the popularity of the day, President Woodrow Wilson approved of the idea of celebrating Father’s Day in 1916. And by the time Sonora’s father, William Smart died in 1919, Father’s Day was a popular occasion in US. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. But it was only after the struggle of four decades of Sonora and her supporters that the day officially came to be recognized. President Lyndon Johnson signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the Third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. But in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Efforts of Ms Dodd were appreciated and she came to be officially recognized as the ‘Mother of Father’s Day’.
To all the Father’s who honor their role, we thank and celebrate you!

County Communication
Following is a copy of correspondence received addressing traffic lights, resurfacing, street signs and sewer hole inquires. A special thank you to Jeff Timler for contacting the county and providing feedback for the community.
From: Chuck.Bailey@gwinnettcounty.com Date: March 30, 2016 at 3:04:58 PM EDT To: Jeff Timler Subject: RE: Traffic Light change in timing? Jeff, Hope you are doing well. Below is a coordinated response to the various questions and concerns. 1. We were contacted earlier this week by another citizen concerning the traffic signals and timings along SR 324 (Auburn Road) from SR 124 (Braselton Highway) through Fence Road. Staff is currently checking the locations for proper operation/timings and will be monitoring the corridor for any feasible timing adjustment to improve traffic flow in the area. Please allow us a few weeks to investigate and implement any new traffic signal timings. Additionally, we have several capital projects along the SR 324 corridor funded by SPLOST to improve traffic in the area. These include: • SR 324 / Auburn Road (Jim Moore Road to Dacula Road) - F-1059-01 This project consists of the widening of SR 324/Auburn Road from the existing 3 lane roadway to a 4-lane with a center lane roadway from Belfaire Lake Drive to Dacula Road. In addition, sidewalks will be installed along both sides of SR 324/Auburn Road. We anticipate to begin construction during this summer (2016). • SR 324 / Gravel Springs Rd @ SR 124 / Braselton Highway – M-0895-01 This project consists of the widening of SR 324/Gravel Springs Road from the 2 lane with turn lanes roadway to a 4 lane with a center lane roadway from just east of SR 124 to Fort Daniels Drive. In addition, the northbound right turn lane on SR 124/Braselton Highway will be extended. We anticipate to begin construction at in late 2017. If you have any questions or want additional information on these projects please contact Edgardo Aponte, Pre-Construction Division Director, by e-mail or at 770-822-7433. 2. A work order has been issued to have new aerial street name signs fabricated and installed at the intersection of SR 124 (Braselton Highway) at Hamilton Creek Parkway. Please allow 30-45 days for completion of the work due to prior commitments and scheduling. 3. We will have our Area Maintenance Foreman go out and inspect the sewer lid on Carriage Glen Way near Lantern Hill Drive. If we can improve the situation in the street we will level up with an asphalt patch. If necessary we will coordinate with the Department of Water Resources. 4. Neither Jim Moore Road nor Hog Mountain Road are included in the 2016 resurfacing program. All of the roads in Gwinnett County are rated in our Pavement Management Software. The rating index system is 1-100 with 1 being the worse condition possible. Our Pavement Management Staff evaluations every 2.5 years all Gwinnett Co. streets. This year we are resurfacing roads that are between 52 to 60. • Jim Moore Road was heavily patched last year as part of our Winter Patching Program. It is rating 75 right now. This helps us to preserve the road until it is time to resurface. • The section of Hog Mountain Road between Mineral Springs Road and Hog Mountain Church Road is currently rated at 65. We will be doing more in house patching on it this year and it will be considered for resurfacing next year (2017). If you have any questions or want additional information on these the road ratings or resurfacing please contact Mark Stonecypher, Operations and Maintenance Division Director, by e-mail or at 770-822-7414. Thank you and please feel free to contact me with any additional traffic related questions or concerns. Charles R. Bailey, PE | Traffic Engineering & Planning Division Director | Gwinnett County Dept. of Transportation 770.822.7412 | chuck.bailey@gwinnettcounty.com In addition to County concerns, we encourage our residents to know who to contact for other issues. At our March Town Hall Meeting, the question of parking on the streets was raised. While the HOA does all we can to notify and request that people not park on the streets, this issue can only be enforced by the Gwinnett County Police Department. If you have concerns regarding parked cars on your street, you should contact the non-emergency number of the police department. We encourage all our residents to be active in the community and contact the appropriate department within Gwinnett County about areas of concerns. This includes the above issues, maintenance of County easements, etc.. Again, a big THANK YOU to Jeff for sharing this information! 18 | Hometown Herald | June 2016

Tennis Tips - Choosing a Doubles partner Choosing a doubles partner for tennis is a lot like choosing a partner for marriage. I have been married for 30 years and even though we do not play tennis together, (which I have avoided for the last 16 years), I used my doubles partner strategies to get me this far. I am not a marriage consular but if they need advice on improving their tennis game then I would be in my comfort zone. Below are tips that will get you to the tennis court with your new partner but remember it is always a work in progress. Tip #1: Be certain when committing Don’t commit to a doubles partnership until you are certain your combination is the best fit for both of you. It could be as easy as, ‘they play great tennis’ to ‘they make me look good’. Everyone as a personal agenda but remember you are playing tennis. Tip #2: Study and emulate the pros • Constant communication (the single biggest weapon for doubles players) • Supporting each other (willingness to forgive quickly - for your mistakes and your partner’s) • Adjusting positions especially on serve and return of serve • Recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of each player
Tip #5: Constantly seek self-improvement We all tend to gravitate towards our strengths and often plateau as a player because we stop working on improving our weaknesses. This is especially true with doubles players as they become dependent on their partners to come to their “rescue.” This is a dangerous position for any doubles team to put themselves in on several levels, the most important of which is one partner may eventually tire of “carrying” the majority of the burden of the team and will most likely seek out a new partner more dedicated to continuous self-improvement. Time to see your tennis director. Tip #6: Know the nature of the beast Doubles play is a very different animal than singles. There are also differences at the various levels of doubles play. Doubles has many outside interruptions. It is a team game not an individual game. In league play, the action tends to be more on the outsides of the court including what food to bring for the match.
Tip #7: There is no “easy” side of play If you are offered the “easy” side of play by your partner, respectfully decline. They are most likely referring to the deuce side. Just remember that one of the most difficult shots in both Tip #3: Choose complimentary styles of play doubles and singles is the inside-out backhand return of serve, Create a team where the players compliment -- not compete and it’s equally difficult during a baseline rally. Hold on to any against -- each other. For example, a big server might need partner that volunteers to play the deuce side -- they are worth a great net player. Remember that great mens and womens their weight in gold. singles players don’t always make great doubles players. I think I can now speak with confidence as I toast the next bride and groom on what it takes to create a winning doubles. Tip #4: Consider personality traits when creating a doubles team See ya on the courts A team can have all of the talent and weapons in the world, but if they are not playing “together” and supporting each other, especially after blowing a big point, any success as a doubles team will be limited and short lived. .Great doubles players are capable of thinking in terms of “team” versus “self”.
