SPRING LAWN TIPS

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT NEWS The Atlanta area has experienced a wet, warm winter, causing an influx of many winter weeds in the lawns, especially in Bermuda grass. Most of these weeds can be easily controlled with 2-3 applications of weed control spaced 21 days apart. The majority of all weed controls have a 14-21-day residual. A liquid broadleaf weed control that can be used on all types of turf and is generally more effective than a dry weed control. For optimum control, apply when the temperature is above 50 degrees and there is no rain forecasted for 24 hours. To ensure good control of weeds follow the label directions. The most common weeds that are active at this time are common chickweed & Henbit (Purple Flower). Both of these are winter annual weeds and good preventative control can be achieved by applying a pre-emergent in the fall. If you have not applied a crabgrass control it is not too late, however complete control may not be obtainable depending on actual lawn conditions. Crabgrass germinates when the soil temperature maintains a soil temperature of 58 degrees for 3 days. There are many crabgrass preventatives available on the market. These should be applied presently to prevent germination. Any grassy weed such as fescue or Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua) in Bermuda will require a selective control at this time different from broadleaf weed control. Core Aeration increases the overall performance of your lawn. The optimum time to aerate Bermuda or Zoysia is when it is the most actively growing (May/ June/July), while the optimum time for fescue is in the fall followed by over seeding. Topdressing Bermuda should be done following core aeration. Since most river sand contains weed and crabgrass seeds, it is a good idea to spread additional crabgrass preventative following topdressing. Further lawn and gardening tips may be obtained by contacting the Gwinnett County Extension Service at 678-377-4010 or their information line @678-3774033 or www.ugaextension.com/gwinnett/contact.html,, your local county extension agent, or a professional lawn service.

RECIPE

HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS TO KEEP EATING HEALTHY AND KEEP THOSE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS!

W hat To C ook In February FIRST, LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT’S IN SEASON

Brussels sprouts Cabbage Carrots Cauliflower Chicory Clementines Cranberries Grapefruit Kale Leeks Lemons Oranges Parsnips Pears Persimmons Pomegranates Shallots Spinach Sweet Potatoes Tangelos Tangerines Turnips Winter Squash

CAULI-POWER FETTUCCINE “ALFREDO” (VEGAN) This vegan “alfredo” sauce tastes decadent, yet is super light and energizing thanks to the sneaky cauliflower base! The nutritional yeast lends this sauce a rich "cheesy" flavor, while the blended cauliflower creates a creamy, luxurious base. INGREDIENTS • 4 heaping cups (460 g) cauliflower florets (1 small/medium cauliflower) • 1/2 tablespoon (7.5 mL) extra-virgin olive oil • 1 heaping tablespoon minced garlic • 1/2 cup (125 mL) unsweetened and unflavored almond milk* • 1/4 cup (20 g) nutritional yeast • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) fresh lemon juice, plus more for serving • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, to taste • 3/4 teaspoon fine grain sea salt, or to taste • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, to taste • 1 package (350 g/12 ounces) fettuccine or rotini pasta** • Fresh minced parsley, for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. Place cauliflower florets in a steamer basket and steam, covered, for 10 to 15 minutes until fork tender. (Alternatively, you can boil the cauliflower in a pot of water for 8 to 15 minutes until fork tender. Drain well before proceeding.) 2. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the package directions. Drain well and add it back to the pot. Set aside. 3. Add the oil and minced garlic to a small skillet and sauté over low heat for 4 to 5 minutes until softened and fragrant. Be careful not to burn. 4. Add the cooked cauliflower, sautéed garlic, milk, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to a high-speed blender. Blend until a very smooth sauce forms. Adjust seasonings to taste. 5. Add the cauliflower sauce to the pot with the pasta and stir well. Heat over lowmedium until heated through. The pasta will tone down the flavors of the sauce so it’s important to taste the mixture and add more seasonings (salt, pepper, lemon, etc.) to taste before serving. 6. For serving: Divide the warm pasta into bowls and top with more salt and pepper (to taste), along with a squeeze of lemon and some fresh minced parsley. Feel free to add your favorite cooked veggies such as broccoli, peas, leeks, asparagus, butternut squash, etc.

RECIPE

GARLIC WINTER GREENS AND CHICKPEA SALAD You can use any greens you want (cabbage, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, beet greens, swiss chard) but as long as they are tender. If your greens are a little tougher, you might want to blanch them in hot water to tenderize them before the sauté. INGREDIENTS • 2 Tablespoons olive oil • 4-5 medium cloves fresh garlic , minced • about 1 pound of greens , chopped (remove any tough stems or inner ribs) • 1 - 14.5 ounce can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained & rinsed • 2 teaspoons soy sauce (use Tamari Soy Sauce for Gluten Free) • 1 teaspoon sesame seed oil • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar (use distilled white vinegar for gluten free) • kosher or sea salt , to taste • fresh cracked black pepper , to taste DIRECTIONS 1. Heat large sauté pan on medium-high heat. Add oil, then add the garlic. Cook garlic until translucent and fragrant, about 2 minutes. 2. Add the greens and cook the greens until they are wilted and tender, folding the greens a couple times while cooking to help them cook evenly (depending on the greens this usually only takes a minute or two).

Remove the pan from heat. 3. Add the chickpeas, soy sauce, sesame seed oil, rice vinegar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Gently fold the chickpeas and seasonings into the greens until everything is combined well. 4. Serve warm or cold.

POMEGRANATE, KALE, AND WILD RICE SALAD WITH WALNUTS AND FETA INGREDIENTS FOR THE SALAD • 1 cup pomegranate seeds • 2 cups chopped baby kale • 2 cups cooked wild rice (you can use

leftover rice or buy precooked) • 1/4 cup toasted walnuts • 1/4 cup feta cheese (omit for vegans)

FOR THE DRESSING • 1/2 cup minced onion or shallot • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons water • 2 tablespoons honey (sub agave for

vegans) • 1/2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 squeeze lemon or orange juice

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prep the salad ingredients (chop, rinse, toast, etc). Chill the ingredients in the fridge while you’re making the dressing if you want a cold salad. 2. Mince the shallot or onion and saute in 1/2 tablespoons olive oil to reduce the bite. When soft and fragrant, remove from heat and transfer to a food processor. (If you want a stronger flavor for your dressing, skip the sauteing altogether. The shallot in particular works well for this.)

3. Pulse the onions or shallot with the remaining olive oil, water, honey, apple cider vinegar, salt, and orange juice until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust. Add additional olive oil or water to keep the mixture moving through the food processor. 4. Toss the salad ingredients together with the dressing just before serving. I prefer to serve this at room temperature or chilled slightly.
