Keeping employees safe as businesses reopen During this challenging time of uncertainty, we’re all learning to adapt to our ever changing environment and function in what is becoming some new level of “normal.” We believe our role at Northeast Georgia Health System is to provide the community with as much information as possible, while planning for the worst and hoping for the best. Our latest data, as of May 7, gives us cautious optimism. The number of COVID-19 cases continues to increase, but the number of new positives appears to be leveling – at least for now. These trends can change quickly, though, so we all need to remain vigilant to stop the spread of the virus.
• If you think an employee needs testing, contact the Northeast Georgia Physicians Group COVID Hotline, Longstreet Clinic or the Hall County Health Department. These organizations can advise next steps for treatment and coordinate testing if needed.
You can find free resources to help you and your employees at nghs.com/COVID-19 with access to simple fliers in English, Spanish and Vietnamese that you can hand to your employees, as well as more detailed guidance to help you and your leaders. Crisis: A Catalyst for Entrepreneurship Throughout history, living through a war, a pandemic or crisis has helped advance industry, improved healthcare and fueled innovation. The present COVID-19 pandemic will most likely not be an exception. Though the current pandemic has had Brian Rochester a tremendously negative Rochester & Associates impact on business, the Chairman, Greater Hall good news is that entrepreChamber of Commerce neurs can be expected to rise to the challenge. Businesses play a key role both in helping communities get through an economic crisis and in creating innovations that shape society after a crisis. Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban is confident that capitalism and Americans’ entrepreneurial spirit will eventually fuel an economic rebound, as he stated in a Yahoo Finance interview. “The one thing about the United States of America that’s different than every other country on the planet is that we’re a country of entrepreneurs. We look to start businesses,” Cuban said. “When we talk about the American Dream, when we talk about rags-to-riches stories, it starts with an entrepreneur coming up with an idea and executing on that idea.” Many of our small businesses are feeling the heat of closings and the mandated shelter-in-place, but there
does seem to be a light at the end of this pandemic tunnel. As businesses begins to open back up, know that your Chamber is here to help. While many organizations have regrouped and changed the way they do business, so has the Chamber. Just as entrepreneurial spirits rises to the call, so do community partnerships. Northeast Georgia Health System and the Chamber have united to provide numerous information sessions as well as specific guidelines to help reopen your business. Through online conferences, webinars and meetings, we are focused on what we can do to help our businesses not only survive, but thrive as we move forward in today's economy. Due to the generosity of two major Hall County industries, disposable masks, no touch digital forehead thermometers and liquid hand sanitizer are available to Chamber member businesses AT COST. It's not all gloom and doom. I've spoken to several folks that are "flattening the curve" and coming out strong. Several industries report that they are back on track, and realtors note that single family home sales are again on the rise. For small business, know the Chamber is here to help. You are the heart of the economy and the Chamber's membership base. Reach out to the staff, and let them know of your needs. See page 3 for what fellow companies are doing, and let us know what your organization is up to. Together, we will get through this.
Community steps up to support our medical providers Chris Bray, President & Chief Development Officer, Northeast Georgia Health System Foundation, and Jerry Truelove, Truelove Dairy Farm, President, Hall County Farm Bureau (HCFB). The HCFB Board recently donated a generous $5,000 to the Northeast Georgia Health System Foundation for COVID-19 relief efforts and to let them know the farmers and agricultural community of Hall County appreciates and supports them. Truelove noted, "After watching the COVID-19 coverage on the national news, Board member Jim Henderson called me with an idea to help our health care workers and show our support." The Hall County Farm Bureau promotes agriculture in the legislative arena, in schools teaching kids about where their food comes from, and by talking with consumers. 2

Lightway Recovery in Flowery Branch
Lightway Recovery, co-founded by Susan and Farley Barge, both in long term recovery, is a nonprofit recovery and wellness center for women and opened its residential campus in Flowery Branch in 2020. It’s a place where women will be supported with dignity and respect as they begin or continue the transformative journey of lifelong recovery. Lightway provides needed services that support long-term wellness in addiction recovery with a two-phase model. The first entails a minimum six-month stay at the residential center with 24/7 support from trained staff. The second level of service transitions residents into more independence while continuing coaching and supportive monitoring. Lightway Recovery is a sister organization to Navigate Recovery Gwinnett, a recovery community organization that is changing the way addiction is treated in Georgia. LighwayRecovery.org
Chamber Membership: More Valuable Than Ever Over the past 5-6 weeks, I have been working around the clock to assist businesses, locally and throughout the Southeast, to navigate our current economic turmoil and uncertainty. My role as a Commercial Banker has provided me with a unique view into how COVID-19 has impacted businesses across multiple sizes and industries. Although it certainly hasn’t always been pretty, Phil Bonelli it’s been very inspiring, and work in which I’ve been honored to Regions Bank; Vice Chair, participate. As I’ve walked alongside business leaders navigating Membership Development the unique challenges and uncertainties of our current reality, several points have stood out to me about why membership in our local Chamber is more valuable than ever: • Information: One thing which there is no shortage of right now is noise. The constant bombardment of information, disinformation, and opinion can be a major distraction from running your business in a time when your focus is required more than ever. Having a local Chamber staff to provide you with information which is clear, up to date, and reliable is a huge asset. It allows you to focus on your operations, knowing that Chamber updates are keeping you in the know with local, state and national resources that you need. • Partnership: Running a business is a hard and often times lonely task. As we navigate these unchartered waters, it is invaluable to have a network of your peers to share ideas and resources. The connections which the Chamber empowers us to make, are needed more than ever in times like these! Thank you for what you do as business leaders and Chamber Members to drive our economy! We’ll make it through this – together!

Founded over 50 years ago, Fieldale Farms is a family business, still owned by its founders, that has grown to become one of the largest independent poultry producers in the world. A long-time Chamber supporter, Fieldale showed its community spirit during the COVID-19 pandemic. Melissa Tymchuk, Chief of Staff at Northeast Georgia Health System, stated, "Fieldale so generously donated 5,000 isolation gowns to us when we were down to less than a one-day supply. We were so grateful." Fieldale, through its Springer Mountain Farms brand, continues its community engagement with a partnership with Junior Achievement of Georgia (georgia.ja.org) to aid in their mission to inspire, empower, and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. As a presenting partner, they will support the interactive simulation center at The Mike and Lynn Cottrell JA Discovery Center at North Georgia. This will include an investment in two hallmark programs: JA Biztown and JA Finance Park, where some 15,000 middle school students will visit annually. Students will interact with community volunteers while applying concepts they’ve learned in the classroom covering topics from entrepreneurship to financial literacy. “One of the biggest investments that we can make is with young children in our North Georgia community,” said Gus Arrendale, Chairman of the Board, Springer Mountain Farms. “Springer Mountain Farms is honored to partner with Junior Achievement of Georgia to help groom the next generation of business leaders in Georgia.” SpringerMTN.com

U.S. Census data is used by 316 programs to direct federal funding including proper preparation for emergencies like tornadoes, floods, and yes, pandemics like COVID-19. Census data is also used to fund programs like Medicare and Medicaid, school lunches and health centers, and programs like WIC and SNAP. We all know people who benefit from these programs. Without claiming our share of federal funds, the cost of these critical services will be borne with state and local resources. Census data is needed to adjust political jurisdictions, and an undercount of our population could mean that we loose representation in the Georgia House of Representatives and the U.S. Congress. Prior to the COVID-19 Shelter in Place declaration, the Hall County Complete Count Committee disseminated over 100,000 pieces of marketing materials with our signature message: Every. One. Counts.
The original due date to submit the 2020 Census survey was extended from April 1 to October 31. Please complete the 2020 Census online today at 2020census.gov, call the U.S. Census Bureau at 1-844-330-2020 or mailing in your forms. The process is simple and takes less than 10 minutes. Ask your family, friends, coworkers and staff to do the same. The U.S. Census Bureau has launched a new initiative called the Household Pulse Survey. Census reps will contact some 13.8 million homes over the next 12 weeks via email or text to measure employment, spending, food/ housing security, education disruptions and physical/mental wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Household Pulse Survey is a separate survey NOT to be confused with the 2020 census. Please spread the word that the Household Pulse Survey is legit and will shine light on how American’s are doing relative to COVID-19.

Vision 2030 Public Art has installed GIANT letters spelling MIDLAND, strategically placed along the old Midland Rail Track, on the Highlands to Islands Midland Trail. The installation was made possible through a gift arranged by the North Georgia Community Foundation and matching funds raised from last year's Public Art Block pARTy. Inspired by an anonymous donor’s wish to recognize the importance of the Midland Rail System, the iconic letters stand tall against adversity that the community has endured and rises above. The project is a collaboration of Vision 2030 Public Art Committee, Gainesville Park & Recreation, the City of Gainesville, Paden Dunagan/Dunagan Welding (creator of the letters) and Warren Bennett/Bennett Service Company (structural and foundation work).
