Behind the scenes with some of the Mountain Moonshine Festival’s volunteers By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com
MOONSHINE VOLUNTEERS GREG MOORE: Greg Moore and his wife Danyelle have been volunteering to help K.A.R.E. for Kids with the annual Mountain Moonshine Festival for 10 years together. (photo courtesy of Greg Moore)
MOONSHINE VOLUNTEERS MANDI LEBARON: Mandi Lebaron and her daughters Kenna and Melodie have been volunteering to help K.A.R.E. for Kids with its events and fundraising, including the annual Mountain Moonshine Festival, for several years. (photo courtesy of Mandi LeBaron)
Every year, it takes dozens of volunteers to help K.A.R.E. for Kids make the annual Mountain Moonshine Festival happen. From the car show to the swap meet to the parade, every aspect of the festival needs the help of volunteers. And after the festival is over, still more volunteers are needed to help with shopping and delivering Christmas gifts to the local children the festival supports. DCN talked to some of the volunteers who help K.A.R.E. for Kids accomplish its goal each year. Name: Mandi LeBaron (volunteers with her daughters Kenna and Melodie) Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids? A: “I’ve been volunteering for several years. I volunteer with the car show and really year-round whatever they need; during Christmas I help out with shopping and we usually sponsor a family. With the car show probably four years but I’ve been volunteering with K.A.R.E for Kids a lot longer than that, maybe six or seven years. The first year I knew they needed some help, and I’ve just volunteered every year. It’s for Dawson County and the children of Dawson County and they were asking for help in the community, so I helped out one year and have been doing it ever since.” Q: What are you most excited about with the upcoming festival and holiday season? A: “I think it’s gonna be a good year this year; I think with Covid it really hurt not just here n Dawson County but everywhere and I think everyone’s ready to get back out 8
MOONSHINE 2021
and go to all the festivals around and it’s just bringing money in for the community and the children of Dawson County.” Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re helping to provide children with a better Christmas? A: “It means a lot just to see a smile on a child’s face; there’s so many children out there that they don’t get anything on Christmas or they might get a hand-me-down but it just brings so much pride to your heart to know that a child is gonna wake up on Christmas morning with a gift under a tree — there’s no greater pride than to know that you at least helped out in some way. I might not be able to afford lots of money to give the children gifts, but I can give my time to help out and bring money into this community. Every child deserves a gift under a tree. I think that’s what K.A.R.E. for Kids is all about. My children volunteer too; they help with the Moonshine Festival, they help go shopping, and it makes them feel better too. There’s a lot of children out there that don’t know what it is to give, and I want my children to grow up knowing that you need to be a little bit kinder to others — this world needs a little bit more kind people in it, and if I can instill that in my children and bring a smile to a child’s face on Christmas morning it just warms my heart.” Name: Greg Moore (volunteers with his wife Danyelle) Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids? A: “10 years because my wife has been involved for her whole life. She’s been involved since she was a kid, so I got married and kind of fell into it.” Q: What are you most excited about with the upcoming festival and holiday season? A: “I love the car show; that’s my favorite. I like the old cars, and I think it’s just a great cause and any time I can just give back a little bit I will. It’s just three days out of the year for Moonshine Festival, and what’s three days out of the year to help out.” Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re helping to provide children with a better Christmas? A: “There’s no better feeling in the world. The most enjoyable part is being able to take some of that money that they make with the Moonshine Festival and go shopping for those kids; that’s what all this is about. I think a lot of people forget what the Moonshine Festival actually is. No one really makes any money off K.A.R.E. for Kids and it just all goes back to the kids — I hope that the Moonshine Festival stays with K.A.R.E. for Kids for a long time.” Name: Amanda Sheffield (volunteers with her husband Shannon and daughters Shyla, Miya and Lilly) Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids? A: “I’m from Dawsonville; I’ve lived in Dawsonville my whole life, and my mom has been doing this festival for about 33 years. My mom does arts and crafts, and my aunt sold biscuits so I remember all the way back to when it was on the square. Then when I married my husband he loves old cars so we got involved in the car show, so we volunteered with that. My daughters help volunteer too, and my husband and I both put a car in the show which is fun.” Q: What are you most excited about with the upcoming festival and holiday season? A: “I love the car show because we love old cars. I love the fact that it helps the kids in the community, and I think the festival in general is a good thing for a lot of people. My mom has cancer so she can’t maintain a full-time job, and so she does arts and crafts so for almost my whole life that’s what she’s done on the side. I feel like a lot of those people who come to these shows and set up tables… that’s their way of life. So I think it’s so important because it helps not only the kids in the community but it also helps the families in the community because it’s their way of surviving.” Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re helping to provide children with a better Christmas? A: “They really help a lot of kids, and anybody could be in that situation, so it’s a good thing that we have people that willfully volunteer and give money and their time to help people because in all that’s what God wants us to do is to love and help our neighbors. I think some people don’t understand the history or they say ‘oh it’s moonshine’ and focus on the controversial part about the drinking but that’s really not what it’s about at all; it’s about giving to the kids and I think it’s like showing Christ because that’s what we’re supposed to do is to love and help our neighbors because who knows who could be in that situation someday.” Name: Terry Tallant (volunteers with his grandson Dean) Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids? A: “I’ve been volunteering for 10 or 15 years, something like that. I’ve been going to it for 20 years and I like old cars, so I volunteer with the car show.” Q: What are you most excited about with the upcoming festival and holiday season? A: “All of it. I just enjoy the car show. My grandson and I go to other car shows, pass out flyers, and kind of advertise for it throughout the year, and he really enjoys it too.” Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re helping to provide children with a better Christmas? A: “I just enjoy the car show. I figured I could volunteer and just sorta help out a little bit, do my part.” 10

GORDON PIRKLE named
GRAND MARSHAL
of 54th annual Moonshine Festival By Jacob Smith A familiar face will be leading the parade in the 54th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival in Dawsonville. K.A.R.E. for Kids has named Dawsonville legend Gordon Pirkle Grand Marshal of the three-day festival. “Well it’s usually one of those big NASCAR drivers so I’m not sure why they called me,” Pirkle said. “But I will gladly do it.” Though he has never driven in the NASCAR Cup Series, Pirkle is known in the national NASCAR community for his devotion to Dawsonville’s effect on the history of racing. Pirkle helped bring the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame to Dawsonville and sounds a siren after every Elliott family racing victory. Pirkle was a major part of planning the first-ever Moonshine Festival and said that he would have never imagined now being asked to lead the Friday parade to kick off the festivities, calling the recognition “a honor.” Rhonda Goodwin, president of K.A.R.E. for Kids was there with Pirkle at the beginning of K.A.R.E. for Kids and was the one who let Pirkle know he would be Grand Marshal at this year’s festival. “I think people respected him and his heart so much that they wanted 12
MOONSHINE 2021
to spread it out as well,” Goodwin said of Pirkle earlier this year. “He called someone and they called their friends who called their friends and it’s still going on. He still talks with at least 90 percent of the people that participate because they respect his heart so much.” Pirkle recently received recognition at the 2021 Best of Dawson Awards Gala with the Best Volunteer award and the renaming of the Heart of Dawson Leadership Award to the Gordon Pirkle Heart of Dawson Award. Despite rainy weather and the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s Moonshine Festival was called one of the most successful events ever by K.A.R.E. for Kids leaders. Retired NASCAR driver David Ragan was honored as Grand Marshal last year. Pirkle will kick off the 54th Moonshine Festival on Friday, Oct. 22. The festival runs through Sunday, Oct. 24. Family behind car wash enjoys
engaging with customers, community Julia Fechter jfechter@dawsonnews.com For Judd Hughes, his father and his children, it’s a family endeavor to operate the Bamboo Car Wash in front of the Dawson Marketplace strip mall off of Ga. 400. “It means a lot to us,” Judd said of the business. “We take a lot of pride in it..because we feel very fortunate in what we have here.” The car wash has been open here for two-and-a-half years, but the Hugheses have been in the car wash business for 15 years. They also have locations in Duluth and Gainesville. Judd and his wife, two sons, younger daughter and his father have deep roots in Dawson. “He’s tenth-generation Dawson County,” Judd said of Alex. “We go back as far as Alex’s great-great-greatgrandfather, who had a convenience or general store just about a mile away from here. The general store kind of served the whole area.” When Judd was 10 years old, his father likewise opened and operated a convenience store called Sankys in the area. The family decided to build the car wash at this particular location in Dawson because of the future outlook. “With all the growth coming up from [Ga.] 400, it just made sense to build here...there’s so much synergy, and it (the business) pulls cars from multiple counties,” Judd said. Judd runs most of the business’ facets, while elder son Andrew and younger brother, Dawson County High School senior Alex, work as needed on afternoons and weekends. Currently, 10 employees work there. “It’s a really young staff,” said Judd, “but it’s a really young staff with a strong work ethic, which is tough to find right now.” The business is best described as an express car wash, meaning that the services offered primarily clean the exteriors of cars. However, there are also 35 free vacuuming stations and pre-wash car check spots in addition to the drive-thru cleaning apparatus. Each vacuum station includes free window cleaner, fragrance, towels and air detailing tools. Judd elaborated that state-of-the-art equipment helps customers make efficient use of their time at the express car wash. “It’s a great concept, and the customers tend to love it,” he said. “You can typically be in and out of here in about two-and-a-half minutes.” Although it can be challenging at times to manage employees and equipment, Judd is glad to provide jobs to locals, and he particularly enjoys interacting with customers. “I’ve been in customer service my whole life. I just overall enjoy the business,” he added. “My favorite thing about working here are the employees,” Alex said. “It’s such a positive, ‘well-lit’ energy. It’s fun being here.” Judd added that his business is still growing and that they’re always looking for real estate to place new locations of Bamboo Car Wash. In the meantime, his family has taken great joy to operate in the county, sponsoring schools and other local entities. “It’s [all about] longevity,” he said. “We feel pretty lucky that we were able to build this car wash here with all the businesses we have here.” 16
