Meet the 2019 Grand Marshall Bud Lunsford By Bob Christian bchristian@dawsonnews.com The Grand Marshall for the 2019 Mountain Moonshine Festival is short-track racing legend Bud Lunsford. Lunsford started his career in the early 1950’s after running a few laps on the Looper Speedway in a friend’s car. “I had a friend, before the lake come in, which is Lake Lanier, he wanted to go out to the old Looper Speedway and he asked me ‘would like to go out there with me,’ and I said ‘sure’,” Lunsford said. “He went out and made a few laps. He said, ‘would you like to make a lap or two,’ and I said ‘sure’ and that gave me the bug. That’s where it started.” From that starting point, Lunsford went on to become the winningest driver in short-track history. Running five nights a week, 65 – 75 events a year, Lunsford won 1,139 races over his 25-year career in venues across the southeastern United States. He was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in 2005. Over the course of his career, Lunsford was also instrumental in the growth and development of short-track racing in north Georgia. He built the Dixie Speedway in 1969, re-opened the Douglasville Speedway in 1971, and built the Lanier National Speedway in 1982. Lunsford was named the Auto Racing Promoter of the Year in 1987. Lunsford retired from racing in 2000 to Gainesville, Georgia where he owns and operates the Funtastik Bowling Center with his wife, Laquita Lunsford. 8

Friends, After over 30 years of working with this event, I am amazed each year at how much the history of moonshining in its various forms has affected and shaped each one of us. Dawson County is astoundingly rich in history and listening to stories from each family makes me realize there are just no boundaries to this bank of knowledge. Stories just keep coming and coming and I have a deep appreciation for every one of them. Truth is, moonshining touched the lives of practically every, single person in Dawson County. It most likely saved many lives back in the day and built many structures that still stand solid. As with anything, it had its dark side and has emotionally affected families. Perhaps as we learn more about the characters and their situations, what they went through and how it affected their choices, we can gain insight to better guide our direction. The Mountain Moonshine Festival does not promote drinking, it reveals and protects history while raising funds to help less fortunate children in Dawson County. Many businesses and civic groups benefit from the abundance of visitors the fourth weekend in October. Yes, there is a dark side to this as well – traffic congestion, roads closed, etc. Some are inconvenienced and some are totally exhausted afterward, but let’s stay focused on the good that comes from our efforts. The 52nd MMF shirt design is a photo taken in Dawson County where moonshine was made by Big Boy Tanner. Until this year, I never knew that Clay Hicks Water Falls existed and had never heard of Big Boy Tanner, although I know his grandsons very well. There is a 1940 Ford on display that was purchased new by a Dawson County resident, sold to another Dawson County resident and is now with its third owner. With only 47,000 original miles on this beauty, it most likely didn’t haul moonshine, but the 1940 Ford was considered to be the ideal moonshine hauling car. Carve out a few days of your life to listen to the stories of how moonshining shaped the Tanner family as well as many other families. It seems they all have inherited an appreciation of the history of moonshining. 16

I often times use the phrase “You have to know from where you came, to get where you are going.” I remember day trips visiting my grandparents as a child and feeling “different” on the two hour drive home. I didn’t understand it then but can relate as I stand in awe of these cars and are drawn to these families as they tell their stories, feeling differently each time. I visualize myself in their place and wonder if all of us could have survived it. That, in itself, warrants the utmost respect to all those that traveled and cleared paths before us so we might be spared a few scratches and scrapes. Take time to ponder “from where you came” and practice it “to get where you are going.” Come to the Mountain Moonshine Festival and enjoy the remarkable history our county has to offer.

History
FUN FACT!
Did you know? Did you know that the 1940 Ford was thought to be the ideal car for hauling moonshine? The car was easy to upgrade with newer and more powerful engines for illicit moonshine hauling, and the plain, dark colors and lack of flashy chrome pipes and loud mufflers allowed the cars to sneak by undetected. Be sure to stop by the KARE for Kids booth to pick up a commemorative Mountain Moonshine Festival t-shirt and learn more about Dawson County’s moonshining history. Their booth is located near Dawsonville city hall.
