Donnie Allison
NAMED
Grand Marshal OF THE 55TH ANNUAL MOUNTAIN MOONSHINE FESTIVAL
By Erica JonesLeading the way this year as the Grand Marshal of the Moonshine Festival is NAS CAR legend Donnie Allison. Allison was born in 1939 and is one of the founding mem bers of the “Alabama Gang,” a group of NASCAR drivers out of Hueytown, Alabama, togeth er with his brother, Bobby Al lison, who has served as grand marshal for the event in the past, and Red Farmer.
Donnie Allison raced in the NASCAR Grand National/Winston Cup circuit and took home 10 wins during his racing career, which spanned from 1966 to 1988. He has 78 top-five finishes and was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2009.
One of the races Allison is best known for is the 1979 Daytona 500 race, when a final-lap crash took the win away from Allison and caused a fight with fellow racer Cale Yarborough. The fight made headlines across America, and the subsequent publicity was instrumen tal in making NASCAR what it is today.
As the Grand Marshal does each year, Allison will lead the parade on Saturday, Oct. 22, preceding the event’s opening ceremonies.
moonshine inductees
Duane “Skeeter” Fields
JULY 1, 1934 – MARCH 12, 1974
Skeeter Fields made liquor in Dawson, Lump kin and surrounding counties. He was known as an “expert” in making the liquor most efficiently (using less sugar) and, for this reason, he got the big jobs. One night the revenuers showed up at his house, he hid under the bed and when they came back the next morning, he ran barefooted on icy, frozen fields to get away. Later he did get caught and served a short time. Skeeter was killed in a car wreck about 2 weeks after he got out of prison.
Ted Bauguess TRAPHILL, N.C.
Ted was born and raised in Traphill, N.C. Ted dropped out of school after the 10th grade and followed in his father’s footsteps in the moonshine business. Ted’s first arrest was during a raid on a moonshine still in 1951 when he was only 16 years old. He was arrested 4 or 5 more times before his final arrest in 1969 for selling moonshine to an undercover ATF agent. Ted was married and has a son and two daughters before he was killed in a car crash in 1976 at the young age of 40.
Tommy “Catfish” Davis
JUNE 15, 1933 – JAN. 22, 2013
Because Tommy’s parents died when he was 5 years old, he and his siblings were split up and raised by relatives. This led Tommy to make moonshine to survive. He was caught and arrested three times. For the first two arrests, he served time in jail. He received probation for the third arrest because he had established a family. The parole officer got him a job cutting timber which led to a career. Tommy always found time to make a little liquor up until his death in 2013.
volunteer efforts
ARE KEY DURING THE MOUNTAIN MOONSHINE FESTIVAL
by Julia FechterBehind every part of the annual Mountain Moon shine Festival are the hands of dozens of volunteers that help nonprofit K.A.R.E. for Kids operate the event.
Whether it’s managing the parade, the car show or other aspects, volunteers help with all kinds of respon sibilities during the three-day festival, which attracts thousands of attendees each year.
But the festival isn’t where the help ends. More vol unteers are needed to help shop for and deliver Christ mas gifts to local children that the festival supports. DCN talked to K.A.R.E For Kids volunteers for more insight into what it takes to make the festival and holiday endeavors a success.
Name: Walt Simonds (volunteers with grandson)Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids?
A: “I’ve been [helping] with the car show part of it since 2007. I have a couple antiques or classic cars, so I’ve just helped with the car show.”
Q: What are you most excited about with the upcom ing festival and holiday season?
A: “Just the moonshine festival coming up, [since] it’s the only thing I’m involved with…and the Ford Galaxies. [We’re] trying to get a few of them at the show.”
Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re help ing to provide children with a better Christmas?
A: “That’s the whole point of the Moonshine Festival is to raise money and make sure the kids who need to have a good Christmas [get just that]. Every kid deserves a nice Christmas, so it’s a way to support them.”
Name: Brian Bliss (volunteers with wife and children)
Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids?
A: “It’s probably been about 11-12 years.... I kind of pulled [my wife] in. The Boy Scouts had gotten us introduced [to helping]. We’ve always helped with the parking. For the last five years, we’ve helped with setup – moving barriers and getting the streets ready.”
Q: What are you most excited about with the upcom ing festival and holiday season?
A: “It’s a lot of fun for local families as well as tourists… and I know my kids really enjoy the festival food.”
Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re help ing to provide children with a better Christmas?
A: “It’s a great blessing to the community, the amount of work that K.A.R.E. does for the children with the Christmas presents. They do a great job managing the events and the benefits to the community as well.”
Name: Rodney Padgett (volunteers with his three grandsons)Q: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids?
A: “We’ve been [doing it] at least 12-14 years. I’m with the Cub Scout Pack 133. We sell the biscuits for them, and that’s part of the fundraiser. Troop 109 helps put barricades up.”
Q: What are you most excited about with the upcom ing festival and holiday season?
A: “It’s a good thing for all the kids…and the commu nity. That’s what I like about it.”
Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re help ing to provide children with a better Christmas?
A: “I think it’s a fine thing. Lots of kids in the county would go without [gifts] without them [K.A.R.E]. I’m proud to help work with it.”
Name: Robin WyattQ: How long have you been volunteering and why did you get involved with K.A.R.E. for Kids?
A: “It’s my third year helping… my best friend is actually on the [K.A.R.E.] board. At the K.A.R.E. tent (by the racing hall), we sell the old and new shirts and the other knick-knacks.”
Q: What are you most excited about with the upcoming festival and holiday season?
A: “I’m looking forward to meeting all the different people of Dawson and surrounding counties, [meet ing] the volunteers and then raising the money to help needy families in Dawson County.”
Q: What does it mean to you to know that you’re help ing to provide children with a better Christmas?
A: “I don’t think people realize how much K.A.R.E. for Kids does for the community and families…and they’ve (K.A.R.E) helped me before, so I felt like I needed to give back since they’ve helped me numerous times.”
