Rednamed Farmer Grand Marshal
OF THE 56TH ANNUAL MOUNTAIN MOONSHINE FESTIVAL
Red Farmer: Still Racing-Still Winning At 91 years old, we are more than honored that Red Farmer will take off one day of racing to serve as the Grand Marshal of the 56th Annual Mountain Moonshine Festival. Not only does Red Farmer still race, but he still wins. Racing on mostly short tracks now, he started his career in 1948. His first NASCAR license was issued in 1953. Red has won 4 NASCAR championships – first one in 1956 in Modified Division and he won three consecutive championships in Late Model from 1969 – 1971. Red Farmer was voted Most Popular Driver twice each in both Modified Division and Late Model Sportsman Division. This seems more prestigious since each of these four titles were voted on by his fellow NASCAR license holders and not by race fans. Another astounding fact that speaks loudly about his character is that Red Farmer has had the same sponsor since 1962 – LongLewis Ford Dealership - and there has never been a written contract between them! Farmer was named one of the 50 greatest drivers in NASCAR history in 1998. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2021. Red has won an excess of 700 races in his career and he is still counting the wins! Red Farmer is also known for being a member of the famous Alabama Gang – a group of racers from Hueytown, Alabama in the late 1950’s. Bobby Allison, Donnie Allison, and Farmer were the original members, others joined later. Farmer was close with the Allison family in many ways. He was a passenger in the helicopter crash at Talladega in 1993 that left Davey Allison dead. Most likely, both the Allisons and Farmer have turned that tragedy into motivation to honor Davey on the race track and in their everyday lives. “Racing is something that gets in your blood and you can’t get it out,” stated Farmer in an interview. It is evident that as long as Red Farmer’s blood is flowing, he will be racing. “Racing is what drives me. I’ll see you at the track!” 14

Dorsey Grady Bearden
APRIL 20, 1931 – JULY 29, 2004
Dorsey quit school in the 3rd grade to work the family stills. He worked for other people but mostly with his brothers, Doc and PeeWee. They had stills all over Dawson, Lumpkin, Gilmer, and Forsyth counties. Dorsey was one of the premier moonshiners of Dawson County – it was his life. His work life was moonshining and it kept the family clothed, food on the table and a little money in his family’s pockets.

Butch Dowell
ROCK CREEK, NC JANUARY 1958 –
Butch was raised in Wilkes County, NC. He started making moonshine when he was 20 years old. He was helping his uncle and cousin before going into business for himself. He made moonshine all over Wilkes County. He got caught twice. The first time was in 1989 then again in 1999. He had to pay fines and had probation. He retired from the moonshine making after that.
Homer “Hammerhead” Odom 4/17/1924 – 10/31/2002 DAWSONVILLE, GA
Hammerhead Odom was the 5th of 10 children born to Ed and Bertie Odom. He went to work moonshining at age 8. He worked on stills, hauled moonshine, and set up stills. Married in 1950, Hammerhead had 5 children. Moonshining put food on the table for his family. He was known as tight-lipped and a fast runner; agents said if he got his feet on the ground, no one could catch him. He did get caught and served time in Atlanta Pen 1954-55 and lost his voting rights. In 1964, served in Tallahassee, FL and from there went to Eglin Air Force base for 2 years. He was later pardoned and gained his voting rights back – something Hammerhead was very proud of. MOONSHINE 2023
