Team Work Makes the Dream Work

A Message From the Superintendent We are excited to partner with the Dawson County News to launch the second publication of the OneDawson Magazine. While viewing this magazine, our goal is for you to find helpful information about the Dawson County School System. If you have questions or need additional information, please feel free to contact us. There are many options for children and youth to be involved in Dawson County Schools. We have a variety of extra-curricular activities, including Future Farmers of America, 4-H, Career/ Tech Student Organizations, many service organizations, athletics, band, music, drama, and art. I encourage parents to assist their children in exploring these options. Extracurriculars allow students to pursue interests outside of a standardized academic context and to explore interests they’ve never encountered, which contributes to college and career readiness. This school year, our state of the art College & Career Academy will open. It is located on Perimeter Road next to Dawson County High School and will offer our students numerous opportunities for personal and educational growth. We are nearing the end of E-SPLOST V, where Dawson County voters approved a one-cent tax to allow the school system to use the funds for building projects, including additions and renovations, land acquisition for school projects, tablets and

computers for students, bus replacement, textbooks, digital resources and other learning resources for students. Last year, we completed the final phase of our iPad initiative that provided all students in grades K-12 with an iPad for learning. This initiative is transforming the way our students learn, moving from a teacher-directed experience to a studentdriven experience centered around creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. It provides all students with equitable access to learning resources and increases engagement in classrooms. We are thankful to the citizens of Dawson County for their support of E-SPLOST V, which acknowledges that our students and their education are the heart of the community! Please let us know if we can be of any assistance. I look forward to a great 2019-2020 school year!

We are “One Dawson!” Sincerely, A. Damon Gibbs, Ed.D., Superintendent Dawson County Schools

Welcome to the 2019-20 OneDawson magazine! We at the Dawson County News are excited to once again partner with Dawson County Schools to produce the second annual OneDawson magazine. As a new resident to Dawson County, I’ve been excited to learn more about how Dawson County Schools sets our local children up for success through the creation of this publication. From the state-of-the-art Dawson County College and Career Academy opening this year to strong partnerships between Kilough Elementary and FFA to grow nutritious vegetables to high school students creating a Go Green Club to make the school system more eco-friendly, it’s been exciting to see firsthand how our community’s children are thriving in this school system. Education has always played an important role in this community. For the past century, Dawson County High School has been celebrating student achievement. In fact, the class of 2019 became the historic 100th graduating class of 6

the high school. More than 250 DCHS graduates have the distinct honor of being part of the only 100th graduating class. In this magazine, you will find everything you need to know about Dawson County Schools, from school nutrition to system-wide safety improvements to resources for all ages and information on your local board of education representatives. As you learn more about our local school system in these pages, we hope that you are excited for the future of Dawson County Schools and are proud of the institution that you have entrusted to educate your children.

About the cover: DAWSON COUNTY COLLEGE & CAREER ACADEMY Dawson County High School opened the doors of the College & Career Academy for the 2019-20 school year. The $7 million facility was built with ESPLOST, a one percent sales tax used for education capital projects. It was designed by the architectural firm Robertson Loia Roof based in Alpharetta and built by Carroll Daniel Construction. In its 35,000 square feet, it holds the high school’s dual enrollment classrooms, space for the school’s Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs which includes labs for early childcare education, construction, engineering, business and computer sciences and science labs. There is also a full size industrial kitchen with stainless steel appliances for the Culinary Arts program as well as a complete video broadcasting and editing studio with space for filming videos as well as editing audio and footage. “It’s going to really transform the way we serve those students with 21st century lab space and give those programs the recognition and the service that they deserve,” Superintendent Damon Gibbs said. Ground officially broke on the College & Career Academy in Sept. 2018, and the project was completed in July 2019. “We’re trying to give appropriate space to the appropriate programs so that they can better serve our kids,” Gibbs said.

KILOUGH’S

TITLE I ACADEMIC TEAMS FOR SUCCESS PARENT EVENTS Positive relationships with families and our community help build a strong support system where all students will succeed at high levels. As a Title I school, it is our pleasure to work with parents on better understanding their student’s academic success & areas of growth. Three evenings a year, teachers host the families of Kilough Elementary to review each student’s Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) score in order to help parents & students work together to create individual goals based on the student’s proficiency in Reading. Teachers also share literacy activities that can be practiced at home. These activities are reviewed & practiced with parents & students at the event so that everyone understands how to practice each activity once they leave. Student progress is reviewed at each meeting so that parents are able to track their student’s growth throughout the year. In the classroom, teachers are engaging in goal setting with students, showing them how to track their progress, and celebrating their accomplishments every step of the way. Kilough Elementary is committed to academic growth for every student, & we know the power partnerships with parents is vital in this endeavor. Our Title I Academic Teams for Success parent events is just one way we nurture team relationships with our parents and community. dawsoncountyschools.org

COMMUNITY BASED INSTRUCTION

at Riverview

Riverview Elementary students were given their first opportunity to participate in the CBI Program at the elementary level during the 2018-2019 school year. The program is off to an amazing start due to the success of our students preparing and operating a coffee cart designed to serve the teachers and staff. The cart was named after and dedicated in loving memory to one of our own students. “Kyra’s Sunshine Express at RvES” offers a selection of flavored creamers, tea, hot chocolate and homemade treats. It has been a great way for the students to serve others and demonstrate the Riverview SPARK. The funds that are generated from the coffee cart are used to take our students out into the community to learn functional skills. These skills include, ordering and paying for their lunch and listing and purchasing supplies for the coffee cart. Students have also visited a fire station, a post office and a bank to learn more about job opportunities and what those jobs entail in the community. RvES is looking forward to more CBI opportunities for our students and cannot wait to see what next year has in store.

ROBINSON ELEMENTARY’S TIGER GROWTH SESSIONS Robinson Elementary School created new opportunities for parents/guardians to be actively involved in their child’s learning and growth at school by offering collaborative meetings called Tiger Growth Sessions. We offered Tiger Growth sessions three times during the 2018-19 school year. The first session was in conjunction with our fall parent conferences in October, the second in the evening in January, and then the third session was incorporated in our spring parent conferences in March. During Tiger Growth sessions, RES parents/guardians received information regarding student progress on a specific grade level skill, an activity to practice the skill at home, and collaboratively set a smart goal for their child’s growth. First, teachers explain a foundational grade-level skill to help families gain a deep understanding of the academic skill and how it can be applied to support student learning. Next, teachers share anonymous test scores from the class to increase knowledge and understanding of grade level expectations and to cultivate a shared responsibility for student learning growth. Then, families received materials and hands on opportunities to use activities that help students practice the foundational grade-level skills with their parents at home. Families also take an active role in setting specific goals for the skill and monitoring their child’s growth and achievement. Finally, families return to the next Tiger Growth session for their child’s updated progress of the skill and another fun activity to practice at home! Tiger Growth sessions will continue in a similar fashion during the 2019-20 school year. RES looks forward to continuing this partnership with parents and families to help our students thrive in the classroom! 26

Poetry Slam

To support our focus on literacy, the English Language Arts department at Dawson County Middle School hosted our first ever Poetry Slam on March 28, 2019. Over forty students and about 10 staff members shared original poetry that they had written to a packed house in our auditorium. We are so proud of the perseverance and courage our students demonstrated in not only putting their feelings into words, but being willing to share those words with us and our community. We are looking forward to making this an annual tradition at DCMS!

DCJHS ENGAGES STUDENTS THROUGH ESCAPE ROOMS In October, DCJHS staff members introduced timed escape rooms with an academic theme to their students. The first escape room challenged students around the works of Edgar Allan Poe and created an opportunity for students to think about figurative language in a totally different way. The 90-minute block gave students the timed feature of an escape room filled with challenges that would set them free from the Poe Family Crypt. While the event may have looked like just fun and games, it provided students with an exciting way to apply what they had been learning. The entire event was a major undertaking by all of the teachers from the Language Arts department, but the day was met with both fun and success for students. Since October, DCJHS American Government teacher Nicki Harvey applied for a grant to build escape boxes to engage kids in a similar but simpler way. The funds were awarded to the school by Amicalola EMC through the Bright Ideas Grant.

SOURCES OF STRENGTH PEER BASED PREVENTION GROUP During the 2018-19 school year, DCHS formed a peer based prevention group called “Sources of Strength”. Through hours of fun and high energy training, our peer leaders and adult advisors, learned valuable skills to help each other, friends and the community. We hope to continue this throughout the coming years and create an atmosphere of inner-strengthbuilding for our youth. Having peer leaders of all different cliques and backgrounds come together has been such a positive experience for our students. Below is the Mission and Vision of our “Sources of Strength”. Mission: The mission is to provide the highest quality evidence-based prevention for suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connection, hope, help and strength. Vision: We believe that many strengths are more powerful than one, and our united goal is to activate and mobilize these strengths in ways that positively change individuals and communities.

Teen Maze In March, Dawson County Junior High school hosted the inaugural Dawson County Teen Maze for ninth grade students. The purpose of the maze was to challenge students to graduate and obtain a career without being blocked by obstacles in life such as alcohol, substance abuse and prison. It was sponsored by Dawson County Family Connection in partnership with local organizations and Substance Abuse Task Force members. Students were given packets of information including a scenario that detailed the student’s story and guided their way through the maze. The freshmen were tasked with reporting to a series of booths ranging from topics like high school graduation and local colleges to jail, juvenile court and suicide awareness. Throughout the maze, students learned the consequences of their actions, both the good and the bad. Representatives from Lanier Technical College, the University of North Georgia, the Goodwill Career Center, Dawson County Emergency Services, Blue Ridge Counseling, Avita Community Partners, Next Generation Club House, Rape Response Inc., Young Life, Dawson County Sheriff ’s Office, Department of Juvenile Justice and Bearden Funeral Home were on site to answer questions and provide information on career paths, coping mechanisms for depression and anxiety and tips to recognize substance abuse and suicidal tendencies in peers and how to seek help.

Partnership In

Motion

The Dawson High School FFA and Agriculture classes have formed a partnership with Kilough Elementary this school year. The two schools are working together to bring agriculture to the elementary grades in hopes of peaking the student’s interest as to where their foods come from. During the partnership, the DCHS AG classes and FFA officers have renovated their existing Hoop House and their existing Gazebo. Kilough students were able to harvest collards to take home at Thanksgiving to cook and serve at their homes. The students are now in the process of harvesting broccoli, cauliflower and cabbages. The DCHS horticulture and Nursery/Landscape classes returned to Kilough to Establish potato barrels for the students so that they can harvest potatoes by the end of the school year. Back in September of 2018, the DCHS FFA and AG classes held an AG Day at the DCHS barn. All the elementary school in the district were invited and the students got to take part in hands-on activities in the barn from poultry, to llamas, goats, commercial dairy, pigs and equipment. The FFA will be hosting their first annual AG Summer Camp in June. The camp will be for grades 3-5, and will incorporate livestock production and management, greenhouse production, and a day of AG Olympics.

DR. SETH STOWERS, DVM Dr. Seth Stowers, DVM, graduated from Dawson County High School in 2009. After high school, he began his college career at North Georgia College and State University, now known as the University of North Georgia. He attended North Georgia for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia. When he began his time at UGA, he knew that he wanted to go to Veterinary School. However, he wanted to have a back up plan in case he didn’t get accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine. His back up plan was to work in the poultry industry. He chose to major in Poultry Science because agriculture is Georgia’s number one economic income and the poultry industry is the largest portion of that in the state of Georgia.

order to gain a better knowledge and develop his skills in cattle medicine, he completed externships at Krebs Ranch in Nebraska and bovine veterinary practices in Texas, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. Throughout his time in vet school, he served as President of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners – UGA Chapter, as well as President for Omega Tau Sigma, a professional veterinary fraternity. Today, Dr. Stowers is the owner of Hillside Veterinary Services, LLC. HVS is a veterinary practice that strives to provide services for Food Animals. His professional interests encompass anything involving beef cows; especially herd health and preventative medicine. He enjoys working with cattle producers in North Georgia to help both improve their herd and to increase profits all while improving the quality of the cattle they produce. With HVS, he has been able to give back to FFA and 4-H, two programs that provided him with numerous opportunities throughout his childhood. Dr. Stowers is also the owner of Red Hill Farms, where he has a small Angus Cattle herd that he continues to improve and grow.

While he was at UGA, he became very involved in various agriculture organizations serving as the President of the UGA Poultry Science Club and competing in collegiate poultry judging. He was also a member of the UGA Cattleman’s Association and the UGA Block and Bridle. After three more years of undergraduate studies, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture – Poultry Science. Upon graduation, he started at UGA College of Veterinary Medicine with an emphasis in Food Animal Medicine and Production. In

CODY HALL Cody is a fourth-generation resident of Dawson County and graduate of Dawson County High School. Cody attended the University of Georgia where he graduated with a BA in Political Science. After beginning a career in communications and public relations at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Cody worked as Director of Communications for Hunter Hill’s

gubernatorial campaign during the 2018 election cycle. Cody came on board the Kemp for Governor campaign at the beginning of the general election and served as Press Secretary through the election, transition, and now currently serves in the same capacity in Governor Kemp’s office. The program emphasizes academic and social language development and its coursework is based on the WIDA Consortium English Language Development (ELD) standards. Classroom teachers integrate the ELD standards with the Georgia content standards to enable ELs to communicate in English and demonstrate their academic, social, and cultural proficiency. Title III is a federally funded program that provides

supplemental funds to support ESOL services that are already in place. Dawson County Schools provides language support services to EL students in multiple formats. Schools utilize push-in and pull-out support from a certified ESOL teacher, scheduled ESOL courses, and online supplemental computer assisted instruction. Once an EL student meets language proficiency requirements, the student is exited from supplemental language services.

EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM Children start school at a designated chronological age, but differ greatly in their individual development and experience base. The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is designed to serve students who are at risk of not reaching or maintaining academic grade level. The purpose of the Early Intervention Program is to provide additional instructional resources to help students who are performing below grade level obtain the necessary academic skills to reach grade level performance in the shortest possible time. The Early Intervention Program Placement and Exit Criteria are based on documented student performance in ELA/ reading and mathematics and is a part of the Response to Intervention (RTI) framework for providing support to students. The EIP provides a structure for additional instruction to ensure students meet grade level expectations at the elementary level.

REMEDIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM The Remedial Education Program (REP) is an instructional program designed for students in grades 6-12 who have identified deficiencies in reading, writing, or math. This program provides basic skills instruction as mandated by Georgia Law in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. The instruction may be provided as a scheduled class with push-in support, a smaller class size, or pull-out support. The REP is a part of the Response to Intervention (RTI) framework for providing support to students. The REP Program provides a structure for additional instruction to ensure students meet grade level expectations at the middle and high school level.

REACH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM In 2019, Dawson County will announce its 5th cohort of REACH Georgia Scholars. REACH stands for Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen (REACH). REACH is a needs-based scholarship designed to promote academic success and expand access to higher education. The program requires students to sign contracts to maintain a certain grade point average, good behavior & attendance, and remain crime & drug free. The scholars also commit to meet with a volunteer mentor and academic coach until they graduate from high school. Additionally, the student’s parents or guardians sign contracts to support their student through their education. When these scholars graduate from high school, they will receive up to a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500 each year for up to four years) to be used at a HOPE eligible Georgia two or four-year college. Many colleges will match this scholarship and some will double match the scholarship, providing scholars additional resources for their college education.

emotional support. The counselors work with teachers and administrators in monitoring and assessing student academic progress. They help to provide scheduling of appropriate interventions that may be needed to help struggling students, as well as, high performing students. Counselors provide career cluster and guidance lessons to students as they work toward becoming college and career ready.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING School counselors work with the teachers as advisors to implement character education and social-emotional learning programs. The Voyage: At the elementary level, schools utilize The Voyage curriculum. Through the use of weekly lessons, students study 8 character attributes through developmentally appropriate lessons. The lessons include supplemental videos and activities to reinforce a strong connection between the character attributes and behaviors. Habitudes: At the middle, junior, and senior high levels, schools utilize the Habitudes curriculum. The Habitudes curriculum helps to teach students about integrity, learning to be a leader, the importance of strong leaders, and how to be a positive influence. These are all skills that are not only applicable as a young adult, but throughout life as well.

Dawson County is one of 103 school systems out of 180 that participate in the REACH Georgia scholarship program. REACH Georgia is a key component of the governor’s Complete College Georgia initiative, which calls for and identifies strategies for the state’s public and private colleges to add an additional 250,000 college graduates by 2020 and ensure these students graduate with relevant postsecondary degrees in a timely manner.

and depression. Students are taught the action steps to take if they encounter a situation that requires help from a trusted adult.

POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS & SUPPORTS (PBIS)

More Than Sad: 8th – 12th graders will learn how to recognize the signs of depression in themselves and others. They will also learn how to challenge the stigma that surrounds depressions and better understand the treatment process.

All Dawson County Schools utilize the PBIS as a framework to prevention and intervention to support academic, social, emotional, and behavioral learning for all students. Through this framework, each school develops positive, predictable, and safe environments that foster the creation of strong interpersonal relationships through teaching, modeling, and providing encouragement. Students are taught social skills and appropriate social behavior expectations. Through this teaching, combined with acknowledgement and feedback, there is an increase in positive behaviors, which promotes a greater climate of productivity, safety, and learning.

Sources of Strength: In partnership with the Suicide Prevention Action Network of Georgia (SPAN-GA), Dawson County students in grades 6 – 12 will participate in Sources of Strength training and implementation. This is a prevention program for suicide, violence, bullying, and substance abuse. Peer leaders and caring adults will be trained and supported in the importance and implementation of connection, hope, help, and strength with fellow students. Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA): YMHFA training has been provided to all administrators, school counselors, support staff, and school nurses across the district. This training provides instruction on how to help adolescents (age 12-18) who are experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or are in crisis. Training of district leaders will continue in 2019-2020.

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER & MCKINNEY-VENTO LIAISON The district social worker and McKinney-Vento liaison continually works with the local law enforcement, judicial system, and health care professionals to address the needs of students and their families. They work to address problems students and families face when enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school. The district will continue its partnership with AVITA to provide professional mental health counseling services at the junior and senior high schools.

Health Services

KEMP VISITS DCHS TO DISCUSS MENTAL HEALTH

Gov. Brian Kemp traveled to Dawson County High School in February to participate in a round-table discussion with local school officials to discuss the expansion of mental health services. The discussion focused on Apex grant program, in which DCHS is a recipient. The Apex program began as a pilot program in 2015 with the goal of building infrastructure and increasing access to mental health services for schoolaged youth throughout the state by providing mental health counselors inside local schools. It is supported by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, or DBHDD, and is currently in place in approximately 400 schools in Georgia, mainly high schools. More than $8 million was allocated in the FY2019 state budget for the expansion of the Apex grant to double the program, allowing for 800 schools to benefit from a partnership between a local mental healthcare provider and the school district. Dawson County Schools, a recipient of the Apex grant, has a licensed counselor from Avita Community Partners serving students inside Dawson County High School and the junior high school who works with students by providing mental health services. The Apex program is flexible in how the grant is utilized with general guidelines, but leaving the power in the relationship that develops between the local provider and the school.
