JULY 2021 Another Beginners Workshop held in May as pickleball in Reunion continued to grow. Steve & Denise Young, Tom & Mary Letica, Holly Cooper, Angela Barnes, and Deanna Eason participated in the Workshop conducted by experienced Reunion pickleball players. As a testament to how easy pickleball is to learn, these new players were playing matches before the evening was over. May also had another first as two Reunion players joined a Pickleball Flex League. Ben Bolden and Mike Giel teamed up to play in the Men’s Doubles 3.0-3.5 Intermediate Level and at the deadline for this article they had won the first 2 of their 6 matches. (An update will be included in next month’s Patriot.). The Pickleball Courts, #5A and 5B, can be reserved on ReserveMyCourt.com for play anytime from 7am – 11pm every day. They are reserved for Open Play most Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9am – 11am, most Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm – 9pm, and some Sunday evenings from 6pm –pm. The days and times of the Open Play schedule may vary, so check the Calendar on the Reunion Pickleball Face Book Page. Beginners Workshops are conducted some Wednesday evenings from 7pm – 9pm. Participation in these Workshop is limited to Reunion residents interested in learning to play pickleball and specific dates are on the Calendar posted on the Reunion Pickleball Facebook Page
You can find more information on equipment, court reservations, clinics, lessons, etc. on the Reunion Pickleball Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/reunionpickleball and ReunionHOA.org. Want to join Reunion’s Pickleball Players or Have Questions: Contact us at: ReunionPickleball@gmail.com

The Heart of the Problem: Why a Blue Ribbon is Not Always First Place As we conclude Men’s Health Month, our thoughts typically include the blue ribbons that bring awareness to prostate cancer. Blue ribbons honor those currently battling and those who have survived prostate cancer. Since cancer is the #2, cause of death for all men, recognizing blue ribbons is important. However, as a cardiologist, we know that the causes of death in men vary depending on age and that the #1 cause of death in men (and women) is heart disease. According to the most recent national vital statistics report from 2018, by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease and stroke account for 28.4% of deaths in men followed by cancer at 22.5%. Not surprisingly, in the “machoman” age range of less than 45, the #1 cause of death is accidents. Just as accidents are preventable, so too are early deaths from heart disease. The major risk factors for developing heart disease include male gender, age, family history, smoking, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, being overweight or obese, and diabetes mellitus. We are born with the first three of these risk factors and they cannot be changed. Importantly, the remaining risk factors are modifiable with lifestyle changes. Simply put, stop smoking, eat a low-fat low-cholesterol diet, get daily exercise, achieve your ideal body weight, and stay on your medicines. These lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of heart disease.
Allison Dupont, MD
So while we honor the blue ribbons let us not forget that the #1 cause of death in men is heart disease and stroke and let’s all vow to do something about it!

July Reunion Landscape Committee Report Summer is peak Tick season! Take time to do a “tick check” when kids and pets return from romping in the yard or nearby woods.
June Yard of the Month
July Garden Tips Water deeply and less often Add more mulch to help plants retain water Deadhead faded flowers Prune Hydrangeas Support tall flowers Plant flower seeds for late summer blooms Start planning the fall garden Fertilize houseplants. They are getting much more light now and can use the food to grow bigger
Congratulations to Tony & Holly Williams 5819 Grand Reunion Drive Pretty flowers and trimmed bushes frame the front porch. A swing on the porch gives a welcoming feel and the flags so patriotic. The well-manicured lawn gives this pretty picture a polished look.
The inaugural Reunion Garden Tour in June was a success, and we would like to thank all residents who kindly allowed us to visit their beautiful backyards. Photos will be included in the August Patriot.
Landscape Committee at work:
Pruned trees at Village Green to help promote healthy turf growth Repaired and painted fence at Freedom Park Applied kid-safe mulch to bring depth up to code at Adventure Playground Notified Jackson EMC of 9 streetlights out The landscape committee meets the third Monday of each month.
