ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE & FESTIVAL

PICKLEBALL Reunion

We’ve a ll heard that pickleball is the fastest growing sport. Pickleball at Reunion has really grown over the last couple of years, too! We have added more courts and more opportunities for play. In addition to the two dedicated courts and two transitional courts on tennis court #5 in the commons area, there are now two courts available for play in the newest phase of Reunion off Spouts Springs Road. We’ve even added new spectator seating overlooking courts #1 and #2 in the pavilion.

Did you know that we had three ALTA teams that competed this past summer? Each team participated at a different level based on skill. Our B7 team, captained by Justin Brown and Mike Hardin, won their division. They then competed and won the ALTA City Championship. Congratulations on a job well done! ALTA seasons for 2025 will be in the spring and fall on Monday evenings. An informational meeting will be held in December. If you are interested in joining a team or learning more about this opportunity, follow the Reunion Pickleball Facebook page for the meeting date and time.

The Pickleball Committee is also organizing a “Mixer with a Purpose” on December 7. This fun event will be a great way to meet other neighborhood picklers, play some pickleball, and support a local charity. At this event we will also be honoring our ALTA City Champs with the unveiling of their championship signs. Plan to join the fun. More details will be available through Reunion Activities and our Facebook page.

Lastly, if you are looking to learn the game or take your game to the next level Reunion resident Scott McLeod is available to help. Scott is a PRP (Professional Pickleball Registry) certified professional. He offers beginners lessons on the fundamentals and assists his student to quickly unlearn bad habits that will give them an edge on their competition for years to come. When teaching intermediate and advanced players, Scott often focuses on topics such as positioning, technique, tactics, and advanced strategies. You can text Scott at 404-697-0103 or email HalcyonBlue@gmail.com for more information.

The Pickleball Committee is led by Sherry Johnson. Other committee members include Ben Bolden, Vanessa Jones, Scott McLeod, Carlos Sorto, Shirley Weaver, Denise Young and Steve Young.

We partner with Flowery Branch Chiropractic, who works with WE CARE in Hall County schools and local daycares to find kids in need this holiday season And we need your help to spread the Christmas cheer!

These kids are from low-income houses, in Hall County, and are counting on us to put presents under their tree. Please sign up for a kid (or more) and shop from the requested items.

We would appreciate the gifts to be wrapped and either labeled with a post-it note as to what is in the gift, or a list with the gifts of what is included. The organization sometimes have enough gifts to supplement more into each child and we do not want to double up any gift given. We would need the gifts back to the meeting house by December 10 to deliver to the families in time for Christmas.

Empty Nesters try to NAME THAT TUNE!

The Empty Nesters’ September meeting started with the introduction of six new members. Treasurer Sarah McElwee welcomed Marc & Juanita Eisler, Rodney & Wendy Jones and Terry & Darlene Holman to the organization. Empty Nesters Annmarie Torres and Joyce Carey hosted a great evening. Thanks, Annmarie and Joyce, for such a fun event!

The catered meal consisted of barbecue pork and chicken, baked beans, coleslaw and some wonderful desserts.

Welcome, Wendy and Rodney Jones (left) and Marc and Juanita Eisler

After the meeting, the Nesters got competitive, as guest “DJ” Glen “Frey” Rush entertained the crowd of about 40 Nesters with clips from songs from the sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. A complex scoring system allowed each competing table to gain extra points by knowing not only the name of the song but the name of the artist, the year it was released, and whether it made it to the number one song in America.

The songs included easy-to-recognize numbers from The Eagles and The Rolling Stones and a few more difficult ones, like Chris Isaak’s haunting voice in “Wicked Game.”

The winning table included Jim and Jimmie Mikoy, Maria and Alan Turk, and Betty and Gary Hodges.

We’d love to have you to join us!

Looking for a fun gathering one Saturday night a month without leaving the neighborhood? We’d love to have you join us if you have no dependent children living at home. If you’d like to join us, email Empty Nester co-chair Kathy Sposa at ksposa@aol.com.

In 2016 Reunion residents Jen and Tom Zimmerman decided to purchase a boat to create memories with their family and give them more experiences. That summer, at the age of 4 years old, their son Tucker started riding a wakeboard behind their boat. Little did they know, the memories that their family would make from that boat purchase would be worldly. If you are not aware, wakeboarding was a sport developed in the early 1990’s, where a rider would strap a single, snowboard-like, board to their feet to do aerial tricks behind the

“If you know, Tucker he is very active kid”, says Tucker’s Dad, “we have always had him signed up for baseball, swim team, or other activities.” While Tucker always enjoyed the activities, he asked if there was a possibility to compete in wakeboarding competitions. “After some research, we found some local wakeboarding tournaments that were tied into a bigger global organization, the World Wake Association (WWA).”

Tucker entered his first competitive tournament in 2022, the family immediately became members of “wake community.” While that first tournament didn’t lead to an immediate podium or winning finish, they learned how supportive and encouraging the sport’s members are of each other, friendships were made, and Tucker’s competitive drive was fueled. Following that tournament Tucker asked to make wakeboarding a priority and to find more tournaments.

The following year the Zimmerman family began traveling the southeast to get Tucker into more wakeboarding events, with tournaments around Georgia and Florida. Tucker was able to secure his first few podiums with a 2nd place performance in a local tournament and 3rd place in the WWA’s National Championships, which was conveniently held at Calloway Gardens (local to Atlanta). While Tucker did well in these tournaments, his schedule was limited due to commitments to his baseball team, which actually kept him from being behind the boat as much as he desired and caused him to miss several wakeboarding tournaments.

Reunion Resident’s Childhood Passion

In 2024 Tucker was “all-in” on his wakeboarding career and his competitive schedule kicked off in April. Tucker was on the podium at every event he entered this year. In the first half of the season, he was consistently getting 2nd place. Over the course of the summer, he refined his routine and added some tricks to his skillset and began winning the local events in the Georgia and Florida.

Fortunately, the Southeastern United States is the hub for the wakeboarding community, and it is easy to drive to the various events. However, the 2024 WWA’s National Championship was held in Seatle, WA, and based on Tucker’s performance early in the season, Tucker’s parents opted to book flights for the three of them to make the trip so Tucker could compete on a national stage once again. The trip proved successful as Tucker’s performance earned him a national title, taking 1st place.

On the flight back to Georgia, Tucker’s parents decided Tucker should compete in the WWA’s World Championship, being held in Gold Coast, Australia. The trip was planned, the flights were booked, and Tucker spent a lot of evenings and weekends behind the boat in preparation for the event.

Participating in the World Championship had some challenges that the family needed to navigate. “If you are going to go to Australia, you need to make a trip of it”, says Tucker’s Mom. The family went over to Australia a week in advance to take in the full Aussie experience and to allow Tucker to work through any jet lag ahead of his competition. This also meant that he wouldn’t be riding his wakeboard for over a week (he normally rides multiple times per week). In addition, the World Championships were taking place in salt water, which actually makes the wakeboard ride higher in the water and perform differently.

The family was able to find a local boat to give Tucker some time to practice in the morning of his competition and allow him to get a feel for the salt water. The weather for the practice was not ideal and Tucker wasn’t able to dial in his run, but did get a feel for the salt water and raise his confidence. Later that day Tucker participated is the first of two rounds of competition and secured the top seeded spot going into the finals.

During the finals, the weather was windy and rainy. The salt water created spray that made visibility tough for the riders, but Tucker was able to persevere and put together a very competitive run. Unlike the other riders, Tucker did fall twice, which ended his run a bit early. Despite the falls, Tucker’s routine offered a higher level of difficulty and challenge than the other riders and earned him a 1st place victory at the WWA’s World Championships for his division.

Next year Tucker will be moving up a division and facing new competition which will require him to develop new tricks and practice and take lessons through the winter. You can follow Tucker’s progress and development by following him on Instagram, @Fresh_TuckZ.
