DID You KNOW?

Monthly friendly advice for our Reunion neighbors about covenants issues & guidelines Because of the Annual HOA Meeting scheduled in January, the Covenant’s Committee took that month off to have a well-deserved rest. It was noted, however, that some community residents still find it challenging to adhere to those printed and referred to regulations related to trashcans. Simply stated, trash and trashcans cannot be in view of neighbors, golfers, or those driving our roads at any time, any day, except for Mondays for pickup. At that, they should not go out before 5:00 on Sunday evening and must be pulled back away from view as soon as possible on Monday, but no later than 5:00. It is only right, and fair, that everyone who signed the Covenant’s agreement at their closing (which is everyone who bought a home in Reunion) live under the same set of rules and regulations. Therefore, because many gentle reminders have been published in The Patriot, fines will now be heavily enforced for anyone who does not abide by its stipulations.

Prior to the holidays the Covenant’s Committee decided to focus on certain topics each month and so, in order to give a fair amount of informational time, it would be good for you to know that in March, the target will be mailbox maintenance; April, gutters, shutters, and general spring cleanup; and May, lawn care which will include shrubs, foliage and mulch. Once more, thank you to all that work so hard to keep Reunion a lovely place to live. The Covenants Committee is comprised of dedicated volunteers who do not make HOA rules, but simply monitor the community to make certain that all who live here follow the regulations that you were made aware of at the time of your purchase. We aim to keep Reunion the pristine neighborhood it is just as other committees strive to oversee the pool, social life, safety, and the Meeting House agendas.

COFFEE FOR A CAUSE 2018

We were interested in creating a community service project for the holiday season. So, a small group of Reunion residents looked to establish an event which would highlight a truly worthy cause. Calling our event “Coffee for a Cause” it did not take us long to identify a need that was both compelling and yet close to home… that turned out to be the issue of human trafficking in the greater Atlanta area.

What we found out was that about 200-300 girls are trafficked each month in this city alone. Statistics show that they are mostly children, often as young as 12 years of age, who are lured from our malls, within Atlanta’s vast transportation structure, or right on our streets. These young people have left homes that were not healthy through neglect, abuse or deprivation. Without a strong family-structure they are youth who are looking for the love they do not feel. As a result, they are easily befriended by traffickers. These men, who are personable, and “preppy” looking, know exactly how to attract, lure, and quickly enslave these girls.

Sam Haupt & Nancy Scroggins

Some of the sad statistics of the life that awaits them is that the life-span of a trafficked girl, who remains in this environment, is a mere seven years from the time that they enter. Globally, the monetary value of a trafficked woman is cheap- about $90. Their value, however, to those who traffic them is much greater. In 2014, the Urban Institute estimated that the underground sex economy is $290 million per year in Atlanta alone and that the gross cash income per pimp is $32, 833 per week. In looking at sources which support these girls we found a cause worth supporting when we met Sam Haupt. Sam, along with a small group of likeminded professionals, are focused on mercy and justice issues. He had over 14 years of experience in Missions to the World, an international ministry; and the team collectively has over 50 years of non-profit leadership. It was through his previous work that Sam learned of the significance of this problem right here in his home state of Georgia. What this small band of founders soon realized was that one of the biggest needs was the limited number of long-term recovery centers for women who have been trafficked and want out. Once law-enforcement breaks up a trafficking ring where are the women and their children to go? They have lost contact with families and even more importantly have lost a big chunk of their life skill-set and their education in their very closed off world. So, with this great need in mind, Sacred Roots Farm was founded. It is a specifically designed home on a working sustainable farm which will serve as the context for emotional and spiritual healing as well as a place for the Coffee for a Cause Committee: development of life-skills for sexually exploited and trafficked women who can Sue Dennis, Annmarie Torres, enter the program with their children. The founders are utilizing the program Nancy Scroggins (chairperson), Merridee material from the SA Foundation-an organization that has specialized in this Michelsen and Rosemarie Wood area for over 27 years and has a tried and proven success rate of over 70%. Sacred Rood Farm is now in operation and the first two residents have begun their journey, which will last on average of three to seven years, until they are able to enter a world they have been excluded from and for whom they will be then be ready to enter as fully competent members of society. For more information, please look up this worthy organization and learn more about their mission at www.sacredrootsfarm.org. We have found that we have grown so much from our experience in this endeavor and thank those who have contributed to this worthy cause in our Coffee for a Cause 2018. You may contact us through Nancy Scroggins at dddpansy@bellsouth.net or Annmarie Torres at anmre@bellsout.net February 2019
