Plumlee finishes strong amid cancer diagnosis By KELSEY PODO

kpodo@gainesvilletimes.com While sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office with his mom, Garrett Plumlee, then a sophomore, said he remembers hearing someone shouting, “Holy guacamole!” He soon found out the surprised remark was about his test results. Plumlee, now a graduating senior at Flowery Branch High School, said he was told that he had an extremely elevated white blood cell count and needed to be rushed to the hospital. After being examined, he said the doctor told him he probably didn’t have cancer but some other disease. That wasn’t the case. From sophomore to junior year, Plumlee visited a doctor each month. “They couldn’t figure it out until this past November,” he said. “They tried to take me off the steroids I was on for a whole year. When they did, the Hodgkin lymphoma presented itself in its classic case. My neck started swelling.” Plumlee said he underwent surgery to have one of his lymph nodes removed for a biopsy. In November, his diagnosis was confirmed. He had stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. “At the time, it just really didn’t feel real,” Plumlee said. “I just kind of refused to process it for a while. Until one night, when I really had time to reflect, was when I could decompress and get some feelings out.” Plumlee started his chemotherapy right away, visiting the infusion suite every other week. His last session was April 28. Until he receives another positron emission tomography scan, he won’t know the success of his treatment. However, Plumlee is staying positive and finishing his senior year strong. Taking four Advanced Placement classes at a time isn’t a walk in the park for most students, let alone someone with cancer. Since becoming a virtual student in January, Plumlee said he takes three-and-ahalf days off school every other week to recover from his chemotherapy. “It is a new level of rigor,” he said. “If you think about jumping from honors to AP, it’s like jumping from AP to whatever may be beyond that, a cancer level. I miss almost a week

GPA: 4.27 Favorite subject: Psychology Intended college: University of Georgia Intended major: Undecided business

of school, then the second I get back, I have to work hard and make up a bunch of tests.” In addition to his assignments and exams, Plumlee is also preparing for his four AP tests. He could skip the tests and opt out of earning college credit. “That’s never been a doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t try at least,” he said. “In the beginning, it (studying for AP tests) was one of the only things I could really focus on and put energy into and feel productive despite all that was going on.” Plumlee is the president of his school’s Beta Club and has already been accepted into the University of Georgia. The senior said he plans to soon attend college on the Zell Miller Scholarship with an undecided business major. Plumlee said he feels life tugging him toward entrepreneurship. His grandfather founded Specialty Tag & Label in Flowery Branch, building the business from the ground up. Plumlee’s father also helps run the shop. “That’s been really inspiring for me, and that’s something I totally want to do,” he said. Throughout his journey with cancer, Plumlee shared that his teachers, close friend Andrew Wade, who also underwent a similar healthrelated life-altering experience, and his parents have been his biggest supporters. If he could give any advice to high schoolers facing hardship, Plumlee said he would tell them to “focus on getting through the little things.” He noted that the most impactful message he received during his treatment was from an anonymous 30-something-year-old man. “He had a mantra for himself: Wake up, get up, go eat and get dressed,” Plumlee recounted. “If you did those four things, then that was a success for him on treatment day. What I would say is do what you have to do, and you’ll feel a lot better. And, just go from there.”

Boyd, with impressive GPA, ready for Georgia Tech Nate Boyd, North Hall High School

By Thomas Hartwell

thartwell@gainesvilletimes.com North Hall High School senior Nate Boyd said he’s always involved himself in a variety of activities, and as he made his way through school, that translated to keeping extremely busy. Nonetheless, Boyd said his enjoyment of his activities — whether it be sprint kayaking, dragon boat racing, Boy Scouts or his various school clubs — has made it easy to balance. And he hasn’t let any of it stand in the way of his academics. Though he’s almost certain he’ll attend Georgia Tech, Boyd also noted he’s been waitlisted at Rice University, Tulane University and Columbia University. The 18-year-old Eagle Scout is graduating with a staggering 4.61 GPA, a full International Baccalaureate diploma and internship experience at Longstreet Clinic, among other accolades. He also said he and his friends have all made it to the top of their graduating class, so his achievement has been less about competition and more about trying to do his very best. “Whenever I’m loaded up on extracurriculars and things that I have to do and I don’t have much free time, I actually work much more effi- Nate Boyd ciently,” he said. “It’s really just been the routine of getting stuff done.” Boyd said he recognized how lucky he is to have a family support system as strong as he has and one that pushes him to always do the best that he can. He said their encouragement to be involved in various activities and become well-rounded have carried through most of his life. “So it’s more like a continuation of sticking with what I’ve always done, and luckily I enjoy all these activities that I’ve participated in. So really, it’s just been through the support of my friends and my family ... and just going with the flow, I guess,” he said, with a chuckle. COVID-19 was both a blessing and a

GPA: 4.61 Favorite subject: Science, math Intended college: Georgia Tech Intended major: Biology with pre-med track or business administration

curse for Boyd, he said. The teen said before the pandemic, he was comfortable relying on his busy school and extracurricular schedule, with set times for classes and practice, to keep him disciplined. But when school moved online, and many assignments became asynchronous, Boyd said he had to work much harder to make sure he stayed on top of things. “Like I said, I do best when I have a stricter schedule, and I don’t have as much free time,” he said. “When COVID happened, it was like ... you wake up and you have assignments, and if you do them, they get done. If not, then oh well. So for me, it was more personal discipline that I had to get used to.” Through the shift to online work, Boyd said he learned to prioritize and improve his time management, skills he said he said he’s happy he was forced to work on before heading to college. In terms of his career, Boyd said he hasn’t totally made up his mind yet. His work and observation of doctors at Longstreet has piqued his interest in the medical field — he said if he could snap his fingers and become a physician, he would — but he also said he hasn’t ruled out a career in the business world, though he doesn’t know exactly what he’d choose. He said he’s looking forward to exploring his interests more in college. Boyd added that it’s “a little scary” and bittersweet to leave his friends and home in Hall County to head to Atlanta for higher education, but he feels ready. “I’m really excited,” he said. “Georgia Tech’s a great school. I’m really lucky.”

‘Whenever I’m loaded up on extracurriculars and things that I have to do and I don’t have much free time, I actually work much more efficiently. It’s really just been the routine of getting stuff done.’

Valedictorian, STAR student bound for Stanford By Thomas Hartwell

thartwell@gainesvilletimes.com With her status as valedictorian, STAR student and finalist in the running for the prestigious presidential scholarship, you’d think that Gainesville High School’s Marisa Woo is a title chaser. But, she said, it’s not about the recognition. “A lot of the things I do, it’s not necessarily because I want to achieve any certain award or milestone,” the 18-year-old said. “It’s more that I just want to push myself to do the absolute best that I can, because I feel like if I’m not, then I’m letting myself down.” And Woo hasn’t just pushed herself in academics. She serves as president of the school’s Chinese Club, National Honor Society, National Arts Honor Society, Beta Club, Coding Club and Web Design Team; co-president of the President’s Club; founder of the Student Tutoring Service; and vice president of the Key Club, Math Club and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society, among other leadership roles and accolades. In whatever time is leftover, Woo also plays piano — she even traveled to Japan for a competition during her sophomore year. And the teen said she didn’t even necessarily mean to keep herself so busy. “I really like to take every opportunity that I see and run with it,” she said. “So when I was a freshman, I signed up for a lot of different clubs, because I wanted to try a lot of different things and meet a lot of different people and go with a lot of my different interests. And I sort of thought that I would sort of drop clubs as I went, but then I became really invested in them.” Woo said she couldn’t let go of the relationships and she wanted to have a larger role and invest more of herself into the offerings that had brought her so much joy. She also said being involved in and leading so many different clubs allowed her to create crossclub events and help members co-mingle. Woo couldn’t quite explain how

she balanced it all while maintaining her nearly 4.23 GPA, but at the same time wasn’t surprised that she had. With a chuckle, she said, “the scheduling just sort of works out.” Woo said her sister and her parents have been her biggest cheerleaders throughout her life, supporting her “100%” in any-

thing she strived to do. But she also credited her teachers and friends at the high school with supporting her in many different ways. “Some of the teachers I’ve had are the most dedicated, kind people, who care so much about their students, not only in learning the material for the course

they’re teaching but trying to make sure that what they learn and how they learn it will set them up in the future,” she said, adding that the diversity of backgrounds and experiences in the student body was also a factor in her personal growth. Woo is bound for Stanford University in the fall and said she’s

choosing between majors in political science, a precursor to a law career, computer science or graphic design. Though she’s made up her mind on a school, Woo said she considers herself undecided on her major, noting that as she applied to schools, she chose a different major at each one. “I kept changing my mind,” she said, laughing. Woo said she hopes to be able to explore in college just as widely as she did in high school to find out what it is that ignites a passion for her next step. Just as it did in the lives of many high school students, COVID-19 presented its challenges for Woo. She said she’s thankful for the adult lessons she learned during the two school years affected by the pandemic, though she wished she didn’t have to learn them this way. Woo said the virus made communication with peers more difficult and disrupted many of the goals she had for her school clubs, such as volunteer and community events. But, she added, it also taught her valuable lessons and forced her to prioritize the most important things in her life. “Even though I wasn’t able to spend a lot of time with a lot of different people like I normally would, I was able to devote a lot more time to the people who meant the most to me, because in order to maintain those relationships, we’d have to put a lot more effort into it,” she said. “So that made a lot of the relationships I did maintain even stronger.” And, Woo said, she’s grateful for a year that, while hectic, set her up to be a stronger version of herself.

Figueroa wants to be catalyst for diversity in STEM By Thomas Hartwell

thartwell@gainesvilletimes.com As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Johnson senior Rosa Figueroa has an appreciation for the importance of hard work and diversity in all segments of the workforce. The 18-year-old is bound for Columbia University in the fall, where she’ll study computer science to become a software engineer. She told The Times she wants to be a catalyst for change in an industry dominated by men and lacking in ethnic diversity. “There’s just not as much diversity as I wish there was,” Figueroa said, adding that she’ll be a data scholar at the Ivy League school. The graduating senior said her love for computer science, engineering and programming began during a summer program — Girls Who Code — that her brother, a Facebook employee, introduced her to. She said she signed up to explore the industry and because, “I didn’t have anything else to do that summer.” “I fell in love with coding, so I decided to do software engineering from then and just develop the new up-and-coming products,” she said. “I like the creativity aspect of it and kind of the versatility, because you can create pretty much anything.” In addition to her hope to begin a shift in diversity in the world of STEM, Figueroa said she wants to help people with disabilities through her work. “I want ... to make technology more inclusive,” she said. “It’s very important to me, and I value how coding and how software engineering — how it has that relationship with inclusivity.” Figueroa maintained a GPA well above 4.0 while involved in musical theater, drama club, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and serving as vice president of Johnson’s student government. She said she’s always been motivated to do her best by seeing needs in the community around her or at large. But, Figueroa added, she’s also been brought up by supportive parents, who have instilled in her the value and importance of giving 110% to everything she tries. “I’m motivated by all their hard work and efforts for me to have a good life here,” she said. “I want to make them proud and do the best that I can in school.” Like it did for many others, Figueroa said COVID-19 challenged her in her personal school experience. But, she said, it also challenged her as a leader in student government, who had to try to incorporate experiences for her senior class that were both safe and fun. The last year of high school is special to many, she said, and it was stressful

to carry the feeling that she was at least partially responsible for ensuring that was the case for her peers. “I wanted to visit colleges and have an internship over the summer ... and it was a big strain on my mental health going through college applications and having the stress of a heavy academic schedule. ... It was just hard being at home and not having that support of my friends all the time,” she said. “And on top of that ... it was my responsibility to make sure we could make this year as enjoyable as possible for seniors, who were

It’s very important to me, and I value how coding and how software engineering — how it has that relationship with inclusivity.’ Rosa Figueroa already having a very rough time.” She also learned lessons, strengthened friendships and said the pandemic made her realize how strong the Johnson High School community is. Having lived in Hall her whole life, Figueroa said it’s bittersweet to move on and leave friends and family behind in the fall as she moves to the vastly different environment she’ll experience in New York. But, she said, she’s also excited to move on, challenge herself and see what she can accomplish.

“I love my friends, and I love my family, and it’s very painful to have to leave them this upcoming August,” Figueroa said. “But we all have to move on and grow.” And always community-minded, she noted, she’ll be keeping an eye on her peers to see what great things they accomplish wherever they end up. “I’m going to miss this school. I cherished it a lot, but I’m excited to see what everyone is going to do in their future,” she said. “I think a lot of people that I know have a lot of potential, and I want to see them grow too.”

Nazarali graduating with cancer research experience By Thomas Hartwell thartwell @gainesvilletimes.com

Few high school seniors can include “cancer research” on their college applications, but that’s just one of Kiran Nazarali’s many impressive accomplishments. The Chestatee High School senior, bound for Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall, said she’s been taking college classes in the dual enrollment program since her ninth grade year and discovered the research program through her college professors. She said a professor in South Carolina, where she used to attend school, opened up the research opportunities to her. “That kind of exposed me to research and made me very interested in it,” she said, adding that she was deeply invested in summer research programs from then on. “That’s what gave me the opportunity to work on all these different projects.” Nazarali told The Times she’s learning how to use machine learning on cytokines and chemokines, proteins found in the immune system of deceased and discharged COVID-19 patients. The research aims to create models that predict patient outcome based on a patient’s cytokine and chemokine profile. She also has experience studying a specific type of colorectal cancer, with research focusing on why certain types of cancers have increased response rates to immunotherapies. Nazarali has three semesters’ worth of research experience and will continue work on new projects over the summer. The 18-year-old also serves as a cohort mentor

‘I want to be able to start STEM programs in the area where I live, because I feel like there’s a little less emphasis on STEM than technical careers. So I’d really like to use that knowledge that I’ll gain at Georgia Tech and come back to this community and be able to give back my knowledge and share it.’ Kiran Nazarali for incoming freshmen at her school, volunteers at monthly community events and volunteers regularly as an early childhood teacher through a program in Norcross. To balance her time, Nazarali said she wakes up early to complete school work or finishes it at school so she can dive into research meetings, work on a project or teach a class after her school day. “It’s all about planning your time efficiently,” she said.

Just as it did for others in Nazarali’s graduating class, COVID-19 disrupted the end of her high school career. For example, she said the virus threw a wrench in extracurricular participation and canceled a research opportunity that would have allowed her to travel to Pittsburgh. But, she said, the pandemic also helped her realize exactly what she wanted to pursue in a career. Nazarali said she discov-

ered her love for computer science, programming and using machine learning tools when her programs had to shift online. She said the change allowed her to work with computational technology she’d never considered before. “Because everything became virtual, I worked on a project where I could work in my own house and learn a new programming language,” the teen said. “It made me feel that some opportunities haven’t gone

away; it’s always important that you can make new opportunities and see things through a new light.” She added that computer science plays an important role in research, which she hopes to continue, with a focus in computational biology. Nazarali credits her parents as the driving force and motivation behind her success in school and elsewhere. “They’re available 24/7 for me, and they always

GPA: 4.61 Favorite subject: Math Intended college: Georgia Tech Intended major: Computer science

encourage me,” she said. “Sometimes I think that maybe I’m not able to do it, and maybe I’m a little bit discouraged. They’re the ones who always encourage me and make me believe that I can do anything.” She called her parents hard working and supportive leaders, who have taught her to never give up and to give back to her community. It’s not just about having knowledge, Nazarali said, but also to use that knowledge to help others. When she transitions to classes at Georgia Tech, she said she’ll be starting with 60 to 70 college credits under her belt — that’s the equivalent of about two years toward her bachelor’s degree. And though she said she’ll miss her teachers and friends at home, she’s excited to get started and see what new challenges and opportunities fulltime college student life will bring. Plus, she said, she can always return to Hall with new tools and experiences that will help her make a larger impact on her home community. “I want to be able to start STEM programs in the area where I live, because I feel like there’s a little less emphasis on STEM than technical careers,” Nazarali said. “So I’d really like to use that knowledge that I’ll gain at Georgia Tech and come back to this community and be able to give back my knowledge and share it.”

Wallace credits success to his faith, parents and school By Thomas Hartwell

thartwell@gainesvilletimes.com Cherokee Bluff High School senior Austin Wallace said he thinks of the same Bible verse every time he begins school projects, prepares for a baseball game or thinks of how he’ll prepare himself for his career. “Colossians 3:23 is kind of the verse of my life. It says, ‘Whatever you do, work at it as if working for the Lord and not for man,’” Wallace recited. “I like to take that and apply it to everything I do.” The teen said his faith is one of the driving forces that helped him achieve his 4.5-plus GPA while interning at Atlanta Rehabilitation & Performance Center in Flowery Branch, participating and leading in various clubs and playing varsity baseball at Cherokee Bluff since the school opened his sophomore year. He served as president of the National Honor Society at his school, was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is a recent graduate of Youth Leadership Hall and is involved in the student ministry at Christ Place Church. Wallace also said his parents were supportive and pushed him to Austin Wallace always do his best, no matter what that looked like. “My dad always told me, ‘I don’t care if you make C’s or B’s if that’s the best you can do,’” he said. “They weren’t aggressive with it. They just always wanted me to do the best that I could do.” And Wallace said that attitude, along with his school’s Work-Based Learning program offering him an internship, has paid off. He’ll attend the University of Georgia in the fall and carry his experience working in a physical therapy setting into his major in exercise and sports science. Wallace said the program, through which he works from about 7:30 to 10 a.m. each morning, is a perfect mashup of the two things he loves most: sports and medicine. Through his internship with Atlanta Rehab, Wallace said he gets to interact and build rapport with patients, who visit multiple times per week for six to eight weeks at a time. “It’s really helped to solidify and nail

GPA: 4.5 Favorite subject: Math Intended college: University of Georgia Intended major: Exercise and sports science

down — this is something I really enjoy, that I really love to do,” he said. Wallace said watching the professionals in their work is daily preparing him for a career and giving him a leg up as he heads to college. Wallace said he fell in love with the career path as soon as he became involved during his sophomore year at Cherokee Bluff. “Everything with anatomy and physiology just fascinates me,” he said, adding that his ultimate goal is to be a physical therapist. “A dream would be to be a physical therapist for a college or pro team.” Wallace considers himself lucky compared to many students in that he said he didn’t struggle very much when COVID-19 forced closures and cancelations across the country. He said the impacts on his learning have been minimal. But, he said, the pandemic forced him to slow down, canceling some baseball events and limiting his interaction with friends, at least temporarily. Wallace said he’s grateful for the new perspective he gained. “It taught me how to slow down ... and take in everything around you, not just staying busy all the time,” he said. Wallace said he’s excited to take his experience to UGA, where he’ll room with a longtime friend from Flowery Branch High School. He said new experiences and places, many of which are outside your comfort zone, are where growth occurs. If he had to do it over again, he said he’d encourage a younger Austin to put himself into more uncomfortable situations. “Purposefully make yourself uncomfortable. That’s what I would say. That’s where I’ve learned the most and grown the most,” he said. “If you’re comfortable all the time, you’re doing something wrong.”

Yan in shape for future with strong discipline, work ethic By Thomas Hartwell

thartwell@gainesvilletimes.com Riverside Military Academy Cadet Jiachen Yan, now 18, jumped at an opportunity in his eighth grade year that, for many that age, would have seemed a daunting reality. The graduating cadet major and Hong Kong native said when his parents asked him if he would be interested in leaving his home on the opposite side of the globe to come to the U.S. and attend military school, the intrigue was simply too much to ignore. He added that, around that time, he’d seen videos and received other information about U.S. military schools that had piqued his interest. “When I was little, I always felt like I wanted to know more about the world instead of just staying in the local community,” Yan told The Times. “I felt bored, and my parents were trying to motivate me by providing me many opportunities and options. ... And that sounded very interesting. I was excited.” Yan began his military school career in Missouri in eighth grade, but he spent all four years of high school at Riverside. He described himself as a lazy high school student on arrival, but he’s been anything but since. Yan is vice president of his senior class and vice president of the student senate, as well as a member of the school’s armed drill team. He also helps to coach the junior varsity drill team. As part of the responsibilities that come with his major rank, he also provides daily reports to staff and faculty at the school. And he shared with pride that he is the founder of the school’s esports club, an accomplishment he said he achieved with full support of his parents. He said he wants his experience with the 15-member esports team, which plays other schools in Georgia in online games like League of Legends and Valorant, to show that gamers aren’t inherently irresponsible or unmotivated.

‘I wanted to provide happiness to other people, I wanted to see others’ success, but I had to become the best of myself in order to let that happen. I have a mindset of, “This will keep me in shape and ready for the college life and my future career.’’’ Jiachen Yan “There are a lot of people who are just like me, who are interested in competitive gaming and also (striving) hard for their academics and ... discipline level,” he said. On top of all his activities, Yan has excelled in his classes, finishing his school career with a 4.15 GPA. Yan said he loves to be deeply involved, and since he and the other cadets begin their days at 6:30 a.m. at Riverside, he has

time to fit everything in. Yan credits the school, its structure and its instructors with helping him develop good habits, strong work ethic, impeccable time management and a dedication to his schedule that has allowed him to make use of every second of his day. He said his five years in the country have also given him a much stronger hold on the English language.

The Hong Kong native said as he grew through his schooling, he continued to strive to do the best he could because he wanted to develop and better himself so that he could better others. “I wanted to provide happiness to other people, I wanted to see others’ success, but I had to become the best of myself in order to let that happen,” he said, adding that he took every school assignment, project or responsi-

bility as a personal challenge to be his best. “I have a mindset of, ‘This will keep me in shape and ready for the college life and my future career.’ ... I can see myself differently from three years ago or four years ago.” Yan said the COVID-19 pandemic had minimal impact on him personally, though he said he wished during every Zoom class that he was face-to-face with his instructors instead. He also said he was grateful for the local guardian that housed him during the pandemic. For those underclassmen who he’ll be leaving behind, Yan said his advice is this: Academics, character and leadership are undoubtedly important in order to achieve “higher virtues and happiness” and to satisfy self and others. After graduation, Yan is off to California, where he’ll either attend school at University of California Irvine or University of California, Los Angeles. He said he plans to major in biology and will focus on biomedical engineering so that he can eventually take over the western U.S. expansion of his father’s medical business, recognized as the top in its industry in Asia. The biomedical business, known in the U.S. as Asian Integrated Cell Laboratory, conducts immune and stem cell therapies and creates medical products that are meant to help seniors, improve quality of life and lengthen life span. He said the U.S. hub is located in Irvine, California, and he plans to continue to strive to one day own that branch and direct the business’ North American expansion.

Basketball taught him teamwork, motivation By Thomas Hartwell thartwell@ gainesvilletimes.com

When 18-year-old Samuel Collins thinks of what comes after graduation, he says his lifetime of schooling, mentorship, community and faith at Lanier Christian Academy will always have a mark on his actions and guide what sometimes looks like an uncertain path. “I just want to be a better person and a better follower in Christ. That’s something that really gives me good motivation. I know that God’s going to bless me through all of it, and he’s the one paving my path, even though some of it is kind of blurry right now,” Collins said. Staff at LCA describe Collins as a natural leader, someone who wants to make a lasting difference on the community he’s a part of so that others will follow in his footsteps. Collins said his contributions were made on the shoulders of others who came before him. “The way I’ve grown up, I’ve just had really good leaders around me that I feel like have motivated me to be a better person.... So, them pushing me kind of made me feel like I wanted to do that.... So I try to push people around me to be better people, too,” he said, adding that being able to make an impact on his sister, two years his junior, and others her age was a driving factor through his school career. “I’ve been at the school forever, so it’s also just planting those seeds to make it so those people might even have a better school experience than I had.” Collins said he plans to major in sports management, with a dream of working on the marketing or public relations team for a major organization like the

Georgia Bulldogs or Atlanta Hawks. The self-described sports fanatic said his love of team sports, and part of the reason for his love of community, is thanks to his experience at LCA. After he picked up basketball in middle school, Collins said the rest was history. “That kind of skyrocketed me into the basketball realm,” the shooting guard said, adding that he played for LCA all four years of high school, as well as ran cross country his final year. “It’s definitely taught me teamwork. I probably say without it, it probably would’ve made me a more selfish person. Because in basketball, it’s not really about the one person on the court. It’s about all five people on the court working together for

one goal.” But Collins didn’t stop with just his sports participation at LCA. He also was an active member of the National Honor Society, LCA’s student leadership program and Youth Leadership Hall through the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, all while leading a small group of eighth graders at 12 Stone Church and maintaining his 3.8 GPA. And while the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on his last two years of school, Collins said it also challenged his self-control and sense of self even further. Of all the skills he said he was forced to sharpen, time management was chief

among them. The isolation, he said, was the hardest part. But Collins also said the pandemic put into perspective his priorities and the influences he wanted to surround himself with. “It really shined a light on who was closest in your life and who was just kind of around. That made me definitely reassess my friend group and made me understand that it’s much better to have a ... tightknit group of friends and a group of friends that are going to push you than having a group of friends who are going to push you in a negative direction,” he said. “That’s something that I

definitely say about COVID19 that impacted me for the better ... But it’s been very interesting having to navigate.” The graduating senior credits his success to basketball coach, David Roberts, his parents, siblings, his small group leader Kyle Lance and previous senior classes full of people who he said pushed him to grow personally, academically and in his faith. “(They) were not shy, either in the sports realm, or in general, with just giving really good advice that helped me blossom as a person,” he said. “I’m excited to see what’s next for me. It’s kind of bittersweet, because

I’ve been in this school system since kindergarten ... but I’m excited for change. I’m excited to grow as a person, grow more as a leader and, yeah, just excited for what’s next.” Collins said he hopes that he passed on those feelings to others in years below him and that he can create ripples that continue to expand in the community. Collins hasn’t yet committed to a school, but said he’s choosing between Lee University, Emmanuel College and Toccoa Falls College. He said he’s weighing his options and the multiple academic scholarships he’s been offered.

Wallace has head start on his aviation career By Thomas Hartwell

thartwell@gainesvilletimes.com

At 17, Wyatt Wallace will graduate from Lanier College and Career Academy with nearly two years of work experience with Kubota, a tractor and heavy equipment manufacturer, and will be preparing to move on to the final years of his education for aviation mechanics. He said his high school, which focuses on developing students in a work-based learning environment, was key to his endeavors to jump start his life. “I mean, you learn a lot — a lot — from getting into jobs early,” he said. “And I’m at work until probably 6 or 7 o’clock every day.” Wallace said from a young age his father and grandfather instilled in him a love for tinkering and fixing, as well as a deep appreciation for hard work. “My daddy, he’s always been the hardest worker I know — he’s always trying to make that money, and he’s always taught me how to work on stuff,” he said. “I’ve got a truck, and I’ve done everything to it — the lift kit, messing with motor — I’m always working on something.” So, during school at Lanier College and Career Academy, Wallace said he spent as much time as he could focusing on his on-the-job training. Wallace said his work ethic and an early appreciation for fiscal responsibility also came partially from watching his family struggle with their construction business during the economic recession in the late 2000s. He credits his grandfather with teaching him the importance of saving money. Wallace said in his junior year, he’d spend three hours in class and the remainder of the day on the job. In his senior year, he spent between one and two hours in class and six to seven on job sites, a reality he said he preferred. “Going to this school was a really good opportunity for me,” Wallace said. The teen said he appreciates the recognition from schools like his that not all students must or even should seek a four-year college degree. He said schools like Lanier College and Career Academy recognize the continued need for a work-

force with skilled laborers. “They need airplanes to fly, they need cars to drive, they need mechanics and stuff to be built and whatnot. So they’re highly needed,” he said. Even when COVID-19 closed school buildings and forced Kubota and other work-based learning partners to send students home, Wallace said he continued working on job sites with his father’s construction business. He said his biggest challenge was dealing with online learning, but he stayed on top of school with his goals in mind. That determination is why staff at his school said Wallace embodied the essence of Lanier College and Career Academy: students who want to work hard and make a future for themselves sooner, rather than later, in in-demand careers. For his part, Wallace said he’s grateful for the school and its staff, which he said were laser-focused on getting students prepared for high-demand and high-paying trade careers and doing so with obvious care. After two years at Augusta Technical College, beginning in the fall, Wallace will emerge a trained aviation technician with the skills to work for large commercial air transportation companies like Delta, manufacturers like Lockheed Martin or more private airports and estates. Given his choice, Wallace said he’d like to work for a “millionaire or billionaire” living somewhere rural and with a personal fleet of aircraft. That, he said, will give him a chance to do what he loves and continue to build the type of life he wants to live. In the meantime, he said, he’s just eager to get started with any aviation opportunity he can find after college — and he likely won’t have to wait long.

Commitment to service lands him full-ride scholarship By Thomas Hartwell thartwell@ gainesvilletimes.com

A combination of outstanding academic achievement, discipline and a call to service is what landed Lakeview senior James Michael Harrison a prestigious full-ride scholarship to The Citadel military academy in South Carolina. “I decided I wanted to serve a couple years back, and I wanted to go to a military college for the military experience,” the 18-yearold Eagle Scout said. “I really just wanted to help people, and I thought the military was a good way to do that.” Harrison said he plans to commission in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation from The Citadel but hasn’t decided exactly what he’d like to do once he joins. Beyond a rigorous course schedule, Harrison competed on Lakeview’s football and soccer teams, as well as swim team in his senior year. He is a leader at his church and in student organizations and balanced part-time work at Harrison Oil & Tire, founded by his grandfather and owned by his father. Staff at his school described him as “one of the most outstanding leaders in the Class of 2021 at Lakeview Academy.” He’s been recognized all four years of high school for his ability to participate in three sports, while remaining on the honor roll, and was also a member of various clubs and honor societies in school. Harrison said his time management skills came with practice, but he’s found a schedule that works for him, segmenting his time day by day and planning around sport events and practices. When he’s not in class, competing for the Lakeview teams or at church, he said you can find him and friends hanging out on Lake Lanier. Harrison said he credits his parents with instilling the importance of giving “a little extra” in everything he does. “Whenever I was younger, it was always, ‘Give 110%, no matter what,’” he said, adding that his dad was his main role model. “So I’ve always pushed myself to be

110%. When you grow up like that, that’s just how you stay.” And Harrison said he had to put his determination to the test when COVID-19 shut down many normal school operations and even classes. He said the main challenge it presented for him was taking classes online.

‘Whenever I was younger, it was always, ‘Give 110%, no matter what. So I’ve always pushed myself to be 110%. When you grow up like that, that’s just how you stay.’ Michael Harrison Especially when teachers were adjusting to online instruction, Harrison said he had to devote more time to understanding a subject and studying. Plus, he said, sporting events were canceled and school traditions had to be altered. The school did its best, Harrison said, to still make those traditions part of his senior class’ experience, though they wouldn’t be the same.

But, he added, that’s not what was most important about his school career. He said he’ll look back fondly on the support from the school community and the obvious care his teachers had for him and other students, especially when times were tough. The pandemic also offered lessons, Harrison said, namely, to recognize the importance of the

relationships with the friends that before may have been taken for granted. And though he’ll miss the friends he won’t get to see as often when he heads off to school in South Carolina, Harrison said he’s excited to get out of the house, enter a new chapter of his life, face new challenges and begin serving his community and country.

How Hewell developed her voice, passion at East Hall BY ROBBIE SEQUEIRA

rsequeira@gainesvilletimes.com East Hall senior Madisen Hewell’s voice has taken her to some interesting place over the course of her four-year high school journey Next, it will take her to Piedmont University, with one of the largest music scholarships given to prospective students there in the past 28 years. A member of both the Georgia Music Educators Association’s AllState Chorus and All-State Reading Chorus, Hewell’s voice has also given her the opportunity at both Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. She’s also sung the National Anthem at various school events. Singing at renowned concert halls was made possible through her involvement with the International Honors Performance Series, which Hewell calls her biggest choral achievement. “Singing in these beautiful concert halls was an unforgettable experience,” she said. “I made so many new friends from around the world, and I learned so much about music. Being involved in chorus has given me the ability to express myself, and it has given me a second family.” Hewell, who also managed to achieve a 4.3 GPA — good enough for fourth in her class — plans to pursue music education at Piedmont University. “I have always loved music, and I love teaching others. So, I figured music education would be right for me,” she said. “I’ve been student teaching chorus for two years now through the Honors Mentorship Program at my school. I have loved every minute of it.” Whether it’s helping students unlock their potential as singers or watching others find joy in music, Hewell said teaching music has been an “invaluable experience.” She said she has wanted to be a music teacher since the seventh grade. “Watching a student grasp a concept for the first time is a great feeling, and I know that teaching music is what I’m meant to do,” Hewell said. At Piedmont, she’ll also have the chance to be a part of the Piedmont

choir, something she said she knew she wanted ever since she took her first campus tour. “I was able to go on a campus tour and sit in on a choir rehearsal,” she said. “They were absolutely outstanding, and I was so impressed. And I knew that I wanted to sing in that choir one day.” COVID-19 led to many cancellations of large school events and choir trips. Hewell said her pandemic-riddled senior year had its pros and cons. “While being at school in a pandemic has been difficult and different, I still think that it has been beneficial,” the graduating senior said. “It’s very different wearing a mask and social distancing. I’m a very social person, so not being able to socialize as much as normal is very difficult for me.” Online learning days were especially difficult for her. “Several times this year we have had to switch to online classes in order to be safer. This is very difficult for me in several ways. I don’t get to be with other students,” she said. “I struggle with learning online, and I don’t have a teacher that I can ask for help quickly. All of these issues were challenging to me.” But Hewell said all four years at East Hall were “wonderful” and she leaves a different person than the freshman who first walked the halls. One of the biggest lessons Hewell said she’s learned during her time at East Hall, is to be kind to others, no matter what they disagree on. “When I came to East Hall, I was very aggressive and assertive about my opinions. Now, I know how to “agree to disagree” and work together and appreciate them as a person,” she said. “The biggest takeaway for me was, even though I may not agree with a person, I can still be kind to them.” “Kindness is a completely free gift that we should share with everyone we come in contact with.”

Herrera excited about opportunities, options By JEFF GILL

jgill@gainesvilletimes.com Karen Herrera has many interests leaving high school, including graphic design, but a future in dentistry seems to be winning out. The West Hall High School senior said in an interview with The Times she has wanted to do something in the medical field since she was child. But dentistry has been her main interest since high school. “I wouldn’t want to experience a patient passing away or something,” Herrera said. “I wouldn’t want to be able to cope with it. I could go into dentistry, helping people with their smile and everything. I know I was self-conscious about my smile, and then I got braces.” Herrera, 18, an International Baccalaureate Career Diploma student, is considering Kennesaw State University or the University of North Georgia upon graduation, with a major in biology and a minor in graphic design. She expects that while she’s in dental school, she’ll “be doing something with graphic design.” Graphic design is something that captured her interest in her freshman year. “When I toured the high school, we walked into that classroom and ... they told us (about the program), I was like, ‘I like this,’ so I decided to take that (career) pathway,” Herrera said. “It’s a lot of computer and software work, creating and working with customers. I help the teacher either making the logos or pressing them on shirts using different machines.” The school does graphic design work for others outside West Hall High, including shirts, banners and business cards, Herrera said. She began taking the pathway classes in her sophomore year, winning in SkillsUSA career and technical skills competitions. She also has completed various IB service and professional/career portfolio requirements. Also, she has been a member of the school’s girls soccer team, the Beta Club and Spanish Honor Society. Herrera’s life has been a struggle in other ways. She holds down an after-school

job at Wendy’s restaurant in Gainesville to help with family finances, including saving for college. Her car was totaled in a recent wreck, leaving her without vital transportation.

‘It’s been a long ride, but I’ve enjoyed it. I’m grateful for all the opportunities they’ve given me to create memories.’ Karen Herrera

“All my college savings went to buying a new car,” Herrera said. She is hoping for tuition help through the HOPE scholarship and other financial aid, but otherwise college funding “will be coming out

of my pocket, because my parents and grandparents can’t really support me like that.” And “I really want to go to college and be someone.” Also, Herrera, a Gainesville

native, has grown up without her mother, who was deported to Mexico 11 years ago. The family is working to bring her to the U.S., “but with covid, everything is frozen,” said Herrera, who also has a 15-year-old sister. Through life’s challenges, school has been exciting for her. “It’s been a long ride, but I’ve enjoyed it,” Herrera said. “I’m grateful for all the opportunities they’ve given me to create memories.”
