HOTEL XCARET Recently, I got the opportunity to visit Hotel Xcaret….Imagine an immersive experience at a resort, where you feel like you are a part of the culture—turquoise blue waters along the Caribbean sea, a river that meanders thru out the property with paddle boards and kayaks to enjoy, picture 12 restaurants each with a different theme and 8 bars, a dinner/theater show, swinging bridges that connect you to other buildings, a Spa like none other where you receive your treatments inside of caves, a kids program that is rich in culture and ancient mythology…that’s the picture I received recently while visiting Hotel Xcaret (pronounced ESH-cah-ret)…It’s a nature lover’s paradise with a short travel time from Atlanta (2.5 hrs.)—I flew right into Cancun as the property is located in Riviera Maya which is a quick 55 minutes away from the airport! Hotel Xcaret is a Family resort so nice for multi generational gatherings and it is an all-inclusive luxury property… It is the first eco friendly resort built from the ground up—you’ll find recyclable materials are in use thru out the resort.

In addition to all the really cool features of this resort, I also liked knowing that they will pick you up from the airport (additional fee) and you have free access to 9 Adventure/Adrenaline/Water/Exploration type parks—all I would have to do is schedule a visit when I arrive ...It’s great to know that I wouldn’t have to pay entrance fees to any of the parks but can enjoy each one as many times as I wished… The hotel’s All-Fun Inclusive® program means that as long as I am a registered guest, I automatically have unlimited access to Xcaret Parks: Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xoximilco, and Xenses, as well as deluxe Tours to Xenotes and Xichen, with dining plans and round-trip transportation, included. Now that sounds like fun, huh! And an added feature is the adults only section, Casa Fuego, which boasts only 70 rooms complete with Butlers and a private pool/bar/restaurant suspended in the sky overlooking the Caribbean—I just wanted to stay here…breath taking in all it’s splendor! A Big Thank You

FROM THE FAMILY OF JERRY HOHMAN September 22nd, 2019 is a day that many of us will never forget. We, as a family here at Traditions of Braselton, lost a beloved husband, father, brother and friend. As word got around that my Dad unexpectedly passed away, people began to immediately reach out to find out what they could do to help ease the pain and shock of such a tragic loss. Words cannot express how much your friendship, support and love mean to the entire Hohman Family both near and far. My Dad truly loved this neighborhood. He hated if there was a conflict and he had to miss a social event or function going on here. I pretty much knew if I called on a Wednesday night or Sunday morning, he would be at the club or golfing on a weekly basis. As some of you may know, my parents were looking to possibly move to California to be closer to family for a few years. After my breast cancer diagnosis back in February and the love and support this neighborhood showed both my parents and I throughout this difficult journey, my Dad told me there was no way he could leave a community like this. He would never be able to find camaraderie like this anywhere else in the world, especially at his age. Traditions of Braselton is not just a subdivision full of homes and a golf course, but an amazing family that comes together for both good times and bad. The Hohman Family would like to extend a big thank you to many of you for supporting all of the family that came into town immediately following my Dad’s death. From the delicious meals prepared and delivered, hosting family so they did not have to get hotel rooms, picking up family at the airport or driving Jen to her radiation appointments, flowers and gifts, stopping by for a visit, calling, texting or sending cards and notes of love, and much more, have all been very much appreciated. For those that could make the funeral and/or Jerry’s

Celebration of Life, your presence and beautiful words to remember this special man mean more than you know. The tribute to my Dad at Sheila Fest, along with the picture wall and plaque placed in the Grill is such an honor. I know he is smiling down upon all of us and proud to have been your neighbor, but most importantly, your friend. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. We will eternally be grateful for the generosity, kindness, and love bestowed upon us during this difficult time. We are Hohman Strong and know we will all see my Dad again one day. If there is a welcoming committee in Heaven, you know he is on it. Until that day arrives, remember to smile and live life to the fullest each and every day because “yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” Love to all of you, Jen Hohman Proud Daughter of Jerry and Cindy Hohman

HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH WHEN SAVING FOR RETIREMENT? This is a question on everyone’s mind, but they often plan for it too late in life. The average retirement savings of Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 is $126,000. Now let’s break that down to see how far it will go in retirement…. The recommended income payout from an investment account is 4% per year. That means the average American retiree will receive $5,040 per year in addition to their social security. Here are a few additional statistics to help put things in perspective.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE NEWS

CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR JERRY HOHMAN

Like any other neighborhood, Traditions has seen our own share of devastating losses. Just in the past few months we lost two very fine gentlemen, Louis Mucklevaney and Don Kolb. Then on September 22nd, we lost Jerry Hohman in an automobile accident. Jerry was remembered and honored with a funeral mass on September 27th. During SheilaFest weekend, Jerry’s best buddy, Jim Barbieri, kicked off the golf tournament in memory of Jerry. At the beginning of the concert festivities on September 28th, Sheila Anderson shared a tribute to Jerry and to what he had meant to this community. Finally, on September 29th, Jerry was honored with a Celebration of Life hosted at our Owner’s Clubhouse. The family was overwhelmed by the love and support from our neighborhood and friends. We gathered wearing Jerry’s favorite red and black for his UGA Dawgs in the clubhouse decorated red and black. There were many pictures gathered by the social committee and made into poster boards to share individual memories of Jerry. Our neighbors brought plenty of food to share as well. Jerry was married to Cindy and was the father of Jen Hohman, Greg Hohman, Jerry (and Rachel) Hanson and Lisa (and Jonathan) Robles. One of the first residents to build in Traditions, Jerry and Cindy have been mainstays of our community for many years. Jerry was an amazing man and if you had the opportunity to meet him you know why. He had a great love of God, family and friends. He loved traveling and sports, especially playing golf and cheering on his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. He never met a stranger, always had a smile for you that lit up his whole face and the room, a kind word and hug to share. If you got to know Jerry, you had the privilege of thinking you were special to him…because that’s how he made us all feel. Jerry had a heart of gold he shared everywhere he ventured. He was a fixture at the golf grill where he always made the rounds shaking hands and giving out hugs before he could sit down for drinks or dinner. That led Jerry to be informally designated as “the Mayor of Traditions.” He was a true ambassador of good will and a great role model. When he saw someone he didn’t know,

20

NOVEMBER 2019

whether at the golf club or walking the dog, he would stop and introduce himself and welcome you to the neighborhood. He loved the kids and always talked to them directly, maybe even shared a few dollar bills. Jerry never complained and was there for so many people in our neighborhood in so many ways, from taking and picking up kids at school, hospital visits, rides to appointments, a shoulder to cry on or to make you look good on the golf course. Jerry was the first to volunteer for anything and everything in our community. Cindy and Jen Hohman were surrounded by family from as far away as England, many neighbors, previous co-workers and friends. Bob, Jerry’s brother, led us in prayer for the wonderful life Jerry lived, for the family and for the neighbors and friends of Jerry. Several family members shared stories of Jerry in his younger years to many laughs and smiles. Jen Hohman and Jimmy Barbieri shared their Jerry stories as many shed tears, not only from listening to their words spoken but for their strength in telling the stories as well. We shared laughs and tears as others came forward to share their stories from our golf pro, to a UGA football player, and others. The Social committee gifted Cindy with a plaque that will hang in the golf clubhouse in his honor, our TOB “Mayor”. Jim Wells gifted Cindy with a caricature painting of Jerry with a GA Bulldawg under one hand and a golf club in the other. Leslie Halla, Jerry’s “favorite” sister-in-law, led us in a toast to Jerry with his favorite Gentleman Jack. It is amazing how Jerry touched so many lives and I am sure he was not even aware of his impact on others or how much everyone cared about him. As Leslie said “Let us honor Jerry by living the way he did, with a generous heart and a ready smile”. When you next visit the golf grill, be sure to look for a new plaque hanging there. You’ll see Jerry’s picture with his trademark smile and an invitation to “laugh, tell stories, and stay awhile,” just like Jerry always did. Jerry, you are forever in our hearts and in our neighborhood. Traditions of Braselton

Traditions Holiday Parade of Lights DECEMBER 14, 2019

In 2018 we started a new event that we hope to make an annual tradition in Traditions. Our first Traditions Holiday Parade of Lights brought out approximately 250 - 300 of our neighbors to enjoy holiday lights and music all along the golf cart path and we have no doubt that with your help we can continue to expand and improve this opportunity for all of us to enjoy sharing the holidays with our friends and neighbors. The 2nd Annual Traditions Holiday Parade of Lights will take place on Saturday evening, December 14th. A joint venture of the Hospitality Committee, the Traditions of Braselton Golf Club, the Christmas Committee, CMA and the Social Committee, this event is probably second only to SheilaFest in popularity. All homeowners are invited to participate!! Homeowners whose homes adjoin the golf course are asked to help us by decorating the backs and sides of your homes (anything visible from the cart path) with holiday lights. On the night of the parade, our residents will drive golf carts along the cart path and be able to enjoy all of the holiday light and music displays before returning to the Golf Club for drinks and snacks. This will only be successful if we have good participation from residents whose property is visible from the golf course. It doesn't have to be elaborate...maybe a string of lights, a lighted wreath, a blowup Santa, a nativity scene or luminary

bags along the cart path. So many homeowners already have their homes beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays and we are just asking that you also consider decorating the side or back of your home if that area can be seen from the golf cart path. Last year we were so pleased with participation. Some residents added music to their displays, another resident had a movie projector showing The Polar Express, one resident had a young musician stationed on their deck playing Christmas songs on the trumpet. It was amazing! Residents who don’t own golf carts have the option to use one of the golf club carts. Some residents chose to decorate their personal golf carts. After driving through the cart path, everyone is invited to return to the Golf Grill for snacks and drinks. Plans are still being formulated but we may even have carolers this year along with a visit from Santa. Additional details and guidance for how to sign up to participate will be forthcoming. Please consider adding some holiday decorations for the enjoyment of your friends and neighbors on December 14th. And by all means, plan to join us for the festivities! Thank you in advance for your support for our newest annual tradition in Traditions!

Welcome TO TRADITIONS

Sunday, October 6 was a seasonably cool (finally!) day in the neighborhood. And you know what made it even cooler? We were able to meet TEN new families at our Newcomer Meet and Greet event! Hosted by the Traditions Hospitality Committee, the event took place from 3:00-5:00pm at the Owner’s Clubhouse. In addition to the Hospitality Committee members, representatives from the ARB, the Finance Committee, the Board of Governors, the Capital Improvements Committee, the Grounds Committee, the Empty Nesters, CMA and the Traditions Golf Club came together to welcome our new residents and provide them information about life in Traditions. As an added bonus, Comcast provided a tasty taco bar for all who attended. The new residents we met included: Mike and Linda Harris, Rich and Sidney McWhorter, Coley and Cheryl Krug, and Amber and John Ballard, all of whom recently moved onto Traditions Way; Gary and Shirley Hager and Jim Burch who now live on Cotton Gin Row; Larry and Jan Gattis from Alderberry Court; Gary and Carleen Webb who live on Fairways Lane; Calin and Estera Pop who reside on Anvil Court; and Loren and Jim Miller who recently bought a house on Rice Creek Court. These new neighbors are excited to be part of Traditions and are looking forward to getting involved in some of our upcoming activities. Among these new residents we have a retired high school principal, retired school teachers, our new Jackson County High School football coach, Ohio State fans, a master gardener, a former resident from Jackson Lake, a family with two adorable little girls, current golfers and potential new golfers and lots more. When you see these new folks out and about in the neighborhood, be sure to stop and introduce yourself!

NEWS FROM THE EMPTY NESTERS

Game Night The day was Friday night Oct 4, 2019 (because you know we can’t interfere with college football day, ha-ha!). We invited everyone to join in a game night but kept the game a secret until that night so no one could try to prepare in advance. Our wonderful committee of ladies setup the room with a wonderful fall theme, even though it was 97 outside that day (wishful thinking). We welcomed our guests, Jen Hohman and Leslie Halla (Cindy Hohman’s sister from California). Everyone gathered in our usual fashion with lots of great appetizers and a few drinks before we got started. Some even had dessert first to ensure they got their favorites. Then game on! Surprise, your team was who you CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

NEWS FROM THE EMPTY NESTERS

Everyone enjoyed a meal of barbecue and all of the sides made by the Grimes. We do love Bill’s smoked pork butts! That was followed by dessert and we do have some great cooks in our midst. As everyone was eating, they were also determining who collected what objects as they spread their booty on the tables.

This was a fun night, filled with laughter, camaraderie and a little competitiveness. Please plan to join us at our next event on Nov. 8, 2019 for a Savories and Sweets night.

Then Carol Higbie, our master of games, started to announce the objects to see who collected what items. Some got clever and added color names to objects to make them match to item, i.e. “red” to a bottle of silver glitter. We had a few surprises when some shared their fancy animal print undergarments. Much fun was had as some teams tried to discredit the objects of other teams as not meeting the criteria creating a sense of competition for our fabulous prizes. In the end the team of Barbieri’s, Hohman’s and Eggleston’s won with the most items and they were the first full team to return.

sat with at your table. Some of these tables we knew already were going to be trouble from the get go from past experience. Carol Higbie explained we were about to embark of a scavenger hunt. But not just any scavenger hunt. The object was for your team mates to go back home and gather as many objects on the list as possible in 30 minutes. The whole team had to be back in that time. There of course was some strategy to who had what items and who’s house you went to, whether you scattered or whether you went to one home. Teams then gathered back at the clubhouse and of course we had a few stragglers, some later than others disqualifying those teams. They now carry the crown for scavenger hunt lateness. But they played along anyway.

TRADITION’S YOGA CLASS WITH JULIE HESS

Please consider attending Tradition’s Yoga Class! We meet in the Owner’s Clubhouse on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8:00 am and we usually finish by 9:15 am. Our class is taught by a Tradition’s resident, Julie Heess, who is certified to teach, Yoga Alliance registered, and CPR certified. Julie has been teaching yoga for over eight years.

The style of yoga practiced is Vinyasa Flow. We move! We do a deep stretch, slow flow class on Mondays. This class will help you with flexibility, strength building, and improved balance. On Wednesday, a faster paced flow class is practiced which focuses on building strength and endurance along with helping flexibility and balance. New and experienced yogis are welcome. Yoga is for everybody! You will need to bring a mat and wear comfortable clothing! A regular yoga practice can help you enjoy a greater sense of calm in your very busy lives. Attending class gives you the privilege of joining others in your neighborhood and it also gives you a chance to give back to your community. We give a food donation to attend this class. The food is distributed to area children through their School Backpack Program. The food helps to feed these children from Friday through Monday and helps them return to class on Monday ready to learn. We have collected and distributed nearly ten tons of food over the past eight years. If you have any questions, please email Julie Heess, 200ERYT at jah1996@aol.com

V O I C E, V I E W, O P I N I O N S

THE FALLACY REGARDING “JUDGING”

The ethos of the current religious and secular culture is that Christians should not judge. Many attribute their understanding of “you can’t judge” to scriptures they have read with a mind, heart, lifestyle, and understanding that is not under the authority of Jesus Christ. Yes, Matthew 7:1, teaches, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged (NIV). My question to you is why wouldn’t a faith-filled Christian not want to be judge by others? What real contradiction can anyone say about a person who is truly god-fearing and living a holy and righteous life before God according to His word? Jesus who was sinless and perfect in all His ways was constantly judged by the religious sect; mostly, he was falsely accused by people who were filled with religious and useless knowledge. The main group of people who opposed Christ during His earthly ministry were those who deemed themselves to be esteemed in the religious realm of society, wise, educated, and prestigious. They were known as the Sadducees, Scribes, and Pharisees. They protected their fallen religion with slander, hatred, and murder. The “don’t judge” scriptures in proper context teaches us not to apply a double-standard and judge someone for a sin we are equally, or even more guilty of doing. Jesus taught many people how to live and love Him and the Father. He told everyone who would listen to stop sinning. He called many to follow Him. More importantly, Jesus offered forgiveness for those who would believe in Him, acknowledge their sins, and turn completely away from them. Friends, if you Traditions of Braselton

believe that making one aware of wrong doing is the curse of judging. You then isolate yourself from learning the truth regarding God’s mandate on lifestyle of living free from sin. The Bible teaches in 1 Corinthians 2:15, “But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man” (KJV). Notice that Romans 6: 1-2 teaches, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Please note this fact, God’s grace will never be an accomplice to sinful behavior. It is ridiculous to think that Jesus died on the Cross to set you free from sin to offer grace and mercy to all who will believe in Him so that you or I can go back to living a sin-filled life. Why give your life to Him in the first place? God’s grace and love transforms the human heart and empowers one to live a lifestyle of godly conviction and truth. Further, God places the Holy Spirit in all of His children. The Holy Spirit empowers you to expel everything that is displeasing to God in your life. It is a new nature. Repent today of all uncleanness of heart! Do not allow filthy communication to proceed out of your mouths. Denounce the god of this world who has you believing that all you need to please God is have church membership, be baptized, or offer good works. Not so, God requires a transformed heart and life! Lastly, there are no good people---only transformed ones! Romans 3:10-12, teaches, “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Join Lloyd, Portia, Ranah and Sariah for Bible study at Clubhouse on Wednesdays! NOVEMBER 2019

BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY FROM THE GROUND UP A lot of factors go into making a community strong. A well-laid plan in a terrific location is always the first step. Add to that incredible amenities and equally incredible neighbors and you’ve got something really special. That’s certainly the case here at Traditions of Braselton. Of course, in order to continue to build upon an already strong foundation, we’ve had to build our roster of home builders representing some of the best talent in the Southeast. These builders and the homes they craft will continue to help us usher in new neighbors – growing our community in exciting new directions. Of course, we always want that growth to be smart growth. That’s why we listen to our homeowners – and to let you know that you’ve been heard, we will be reintroducing side water table requirements on all lots and will opt not to subdivide the neighborhood any further. In addition to Paran Homes, we are proud to introduce you to some of the builders who represent a broad portfolio of homes to suit a wide array of home buyers and are currently building in Traditions of Braselton… Currahee Home Builders Derived from a Cherokee Indian word that translates to “we stand alone,” the name for this custom home builder is perfectly chosen.
