The Truth About College Savings
Today, I would like to talk about 529 plans. They are a great college savings tool, however, there are many myths about how they work. I will cover some of the most common ones here. Myth # 1
If my child does not go to college, I lose all the money in my account • Use the funds to pay for community college, vocational school or other eligible post‐secondary education • Change the beneficiary to a sibling or other qualified family member who will attend college • Use the money to pay for your own continuing education • Save the funds for a future grandchild • Take a non‐qualified withdrawal and pay income tax and a 10% penalty on the earnings portion of the withdrawal. (Your contributions were made with after tax money and therefore will never be taxed or penalized.)
Myth # 3
My income is too high to contribute to a 529 plan Unlike other education savings accounts and some retirement accounts, 529 plans have no income limits.
Myth # 5
My child can only go to college in the state where the plan has been set up Your child can attend almost any college, no matter where your 529 plan is based. This includes four‐year public and private college, community college, trade schools and even some international schools.
Myth # 7
I won’t get financial aid if my child has a 529 plan
Myth # 2
I can only invest in my home state’s plan • • •
Check with your homes state’s plan first Currently, 35 states including the District of Columbia offer a state tax credit or deduction for 529 plan contributions. Most of these states require that you invest in your home state’s plan, but seven states will offer a tax benefit for contributions to any state’s plan. (Sorry, Georgia is not one of them.)
Myth # 4
If my brilliant or athletic kid gets a full ride, I lose the money in my account • • •
You can take the non‐qualified withdrawal listed above There is a special exception to the 10% penalty when the beneficiary dies, becomes disabled, decides to attend a U.S. Military Academy or earns a scholarship. Students can avoid the 10% penalty on non‐qualified withdrawals up to the amount of the tax‐free scholarship. The earnings portion of the withdrawal will still incur income tax.
Myth # 6
Only young people can have 529 plans Younger children will have more time for their investments to grow in a 529 plan, but older students can still take advantage of federal and sometimes state tax benefits. For example, if a student lives in a state that offers a tax deduction for 529 plan contributions and they are going back to college for a career change or graduate school, they can claim the deduction and reinvest it for a quick boost in savings.
• A 529 plan will affect financial aid eligibility, but the impact will be very small. • 529 accounts owned by a student or one of their parents receive favorable treatment on the FASFA. • Typically, 20% of a student’s assets are considered available funds to pay for college. Reference: www.savingforcollege.com • But money saved in a student‐owned 529 plan is considered a parental asset, which means student’s aid package would Ann Austin only be reduced by up to 5.64% of the account value. Financial Advisor, AAMS®, AIF® • What’s more, you will not have to report he funds Raymond James & Associates, Inc. withdrawn as student income on the FASFA when they’re used to pay for college. Withdrawals from other savings 101 Trinity Place Athens, GA 30607 vehicles, such Roth IRAs will be counted as student income Ph# 706‐613‐9915 and are assessed at up to 50%, so a $10,000 withdrawal can reduce a student’s aid eligibility by $5,000. Raymond James & Associates, Inc., member New York Stock Exchange/SIPC Any Opinions are those of Ann Austin and not necessarily those of Raymond James. The information has been obtained from sources considered to be reliable, but Raymond James does not guarantee that the foregoing material is accurate or complete. Any information is not a complete summary or statement of all available data necessary for making an investment decision and does not constitute a recommendation. As with other investments, there are generally fees and expenses associated with participation in a 529 plan. There is also a risk that these plans may lose money or not perform well enough to cover college costs anticipated. Most states offer their own 529 programs, which may provide advantages and benefits exclusively for their residents. The tax implications can vary significantly from state to state.

Blood Drive on
February 29th, June 6th and November 11th, 2020
Most everyone has known or have heard of our wonderful neighbor, Jerry Hohman who was very committed to the neighborhood and the community outreach programs. Among many other things, Jerry was dedicated to donating to the Red Cross. He routinely drove to Athens to donate platelets and was one of the first people to add his name to the donation list for our community Blood Drives. In recognition of Jerry’s commitment to the Red Cross, we as a community are honoring him by naming our community future blood drives “The Jerry Hohman Memorial Blood Drive”. This new year we will be having our community blood drives on February 29th, June 6th and November 11th. We will be reaching out to the community to request their participation on our blood drives in order to increase our donation volume.
12
JANUARY 2020
You may not have the time or resources to participate in several outside charity events, so donating blood in the community is an excellent way to give the greatest gift of all… The gift of saving someone’s life, which is priceless. Blood donation is a solidarity and lifesaving act. With your donation you could be saving the lives of infants, children, cancer patients, car accident victims, burn victims, sickle-cell patients, or at the very least improving the lives of these people. Please find it in your heart to contribute. It only takes about an hour and means more than you will ever know. It’s easy to rationalize that someone else will fill the need, but when more than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day, each and every donation helps ensure that when someone in our community needs blood in an emergency, we will have some to give them. YOUR hour in the donation chair matters to your community.

S ocial committee N ews
Happy New Year everyone!! Well, 2019 was a very busy year at Traditions of Braselton. We have been working on our 2020 event schedule and we hope you will enjoy what we have coming up this year. Sheila Anderson, Social Committee Chair A NOTE FROM THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE: I still hear stories of people that do not hear about our events here in the neighborhood! If you have new neighbors, introduce yourselves, and make sure they are signed up to receive emails, are on the Traditions Community Facebook page, the Homeowners private Facebook page, and that they are receiving the newsletter! If everyone is on these 4 avenues there is no way of not knowing what is going on in the neighborhood!! Also, Traditions has grown so much our events are RSVP! The only way we can plan is to have everyone RSVP even for free events (remember if you RSVP for free events…we plan on you being there… We purchase according to the rsvp…so if you don’t show up, it is YOUR money wasted…THESE FUNDS COME OUT OF YOUR HOA MONEY). If this continues to happen, we will have to start charging for the free kid events. There also will be events that are for residents only so watch the details on each event! Mr. and Mrs. Claus visited Traditions What a magical time we had with Mr. & Mrs. Claus on Sunday December 1st. We feasted on hot chocolate and donuts, made ornaments and reindeer food, and listened to Santa read the Night Before Christmas.
Future Events Pinot & Paint Party on February 8th, 2020 at 6pm - Stay tuned for details.

2nd Annual Holiday Parade of Lights
There aren’t enough ways to say “thank you” to everyone who had a hand in making our 2nd Annual Holiday Parade of Lights a huge success! First and foremost, thank you to all our residents who took the time (and $ and effort) to add decorations to the fronts, sides, backs of your homes just for the enjoyment of all your neighbors. I wish you could have seen the excitement and wonder in the eyes of the children and adults who participated last night. We sent out over 120 carts last night and had almost 400 people enjoying the parade and fellowship at the Golf Grill. That’s almost twice as many participants as we had last year! Thank you to all who came out for the parade! Huge thanks to Club Corp, TOB Golf Club, and especially Brandon Baum, Casey Haney and Steve Stonecipher and their grounds crew, pro shop staff and grill staff for making this a fun night for the neighborhood. Thanks to Comcast for supplying donuts and hot apple cider! Perfect for the chilly night! Big thanks to CMA for planning and coordination efforts and to the Traditions Decorating Committee for helping get everything organized and decorated and for taking photos of the light displays. And of course, thanks to the Hospitality Committee members for planning, coordinating, supplying snacks, handling registration and doing everything that needed doing to pull this off! That includes several husbands who were drafted into service last night, too, (Bruce Higbie and David Green). And we can’t forget Santa and Mrs. Claus. Thank you for stopping by to chat with so many children. We know you’re busy this time of year, so we appreciate you visiting with our families last night. Merry Christmas, Traditions!

EMPTY NESTERS 2019
Christmas Party
It was such a delight to pull up to the Owner’s Clubhouse on the evening of Friday, December 6 and see the entire clubhouse lit with beautiful lights and decorations. Walking in the door, the magic continued with a fabulous Christmas tree, Santa bench and tables decorated with greenery, twinkling lights and paper trees.
After a blessing by John Eggleston, the attendees enjoyed hearty appetizers followed by a dinner of ham, turkey breast, dressing, potatoes, salads, green beans, rolls and more. A tart cranberry punch prepared by our own mixologist, Nancy Bolen, was the perfect beverage to accompany dinner. And then there was dessert! Boy, was there dessert!! Once everyone had eaten dinner, it was time for our annual gift exchange. But prior to the game, the Empty Nesters paid tribute via a standing ovation to Cheryl and Steve Morrell for their leadership during the past 7 years. The Empty Nester group was formed shortly after residents began moving into the neighborhood by homeowners including Julie Heese, Kay Costantino, Tommye Stewart, Carol Zeleznick, Pam Poppe and others. (Please forgive me if I omitted some of the founders…we have only lived here for 6.5 years but I have heard stories of the origins of the EN group.) Cheryl Morrell has been the chair of the EN Committee for the past 7 years and has worked tirelessly to ensure new residents are invited to participate, to plan and carry out monthly events, and to make sure each event is both fun and memorable. Steve Morrell wasn’t officially a member of the EN Committee…but he should have been! He built props for our events, set up/broke down tables and chairs, hauled supplies and equipment and did anything and everything he could do to support EN events. The Morrells have gone above and beyond in making the Empty Nesters a fun and vital part of the community. Cheryl had resigned her position as EN chair back in the summer to Beth Grimes. However, the Christmas party was Cheryl’s last event as a member of the EN Committee so it was very fitting that the group was able to thank her for her service. Then it was time for our white elephant gift exchange. Members who wanted to participate were invited to bring one gag gift per household to exchange. Once a gift was opened, it could be “stolen” two additional times before it was retired. There were lots of laughs as members opened gifts such as a “dammit doll,” a potty golf game, an ugly (really ugly) Christmas sweater, a barking/ dancing dog toy and much more. While some folks were too polite to steal another gift, some others were all in…happily stealing gifts from their neighbors. At the end of the evening, everyone had plenty of laughs and lots of fun at our last event of the year. The Empty Nesters take off during the month of January but we will be back with more fun in February. We hope you will join us! Carol Higbie, Empty Nester Committee

Greek Chicken, Freekeh, and Spinach Bowls This speedy dish is half whole-grain salad, half Greek salad featuring baby spinach, dill, and feta. Substitute lamb or fish for the chicken, or top with a fried egg for a vegetarian main dish.
ingredients:
1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, plus lemon wedges, for serving 3 small cloves garlic, chopped 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast tenders 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion 1/2 cup finely chopped fennel (about 1/2 small bulb) 1 cup cracked freekeh
YIELDS: 4 servings
1-1/2 cups lower-salt chicken or vegetable broth 3 packed cups baby spinach leaves (about 4 oz.) 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill leaves; more sprigs for garnish Nonstick cooking spray Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup crumbled feta (about 1 oz.)
Directions: In a zip-top bag, combine 2 Tbs. of the oil, 2-1/2 Tbs. of the lemon juice, and 2 tsp. of the garlic. Add the chicken, toss to coat, and set aside. Heat the remaining 2 Tbs. oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and fennel, and cook, stirring frequently, until almost tender, 3 minutes. Add the freekeh and remaining garlic, and cook, stirring constantly, until the garlic is fragrant, 30 seconds. Slowly add the broth. Cover and cook over low heat until all the broth is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Turn off the heat, fold in the spinach and chopped dill, cover, and let stand for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, lightly spray a grill pan with the cooking spray, and then heat over medium-high heat. Remove the chicken tenders from the marinade, and season with salt and pepper; discard the marinade. Cook the chicken in the grill pan until cooked through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a cutting board, and slice thickly against the grain. Stir the feta and the remaining 1-1/2 Tbs. lemon juice into the freekeh mixture. Season with 1/4 tsp. pepper and an additional 1/4 tsp. salt, if you like. Divide among 4 bowls. Arrange the chicken on top of the freekeh and garnish with the reserved dill sprigs. Serve with the lemon wedges.

Tradition’s Yoga Class with Julie Heess Please consider attending Tradition’s Yoga Class! We meet in the Owner’s Clubhouse on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8:00 am and we usually finish by 9:15 am. Our class is taught by a Tradition’s resident, Julie Heess, who is certified to teach, Yoga Alliance registered, and CPR certified. Julie has been teaching yoga for over eight years. The style of yoga practiced is Vinyasa Flow. We move! We do a deep stretch, slow flow class on Mondays. This class will help you with flexibility, strength building, and improved balance. On Wednesday, a faster paced flow class is practiced which focuses on building strength and endurance along with helping flexibility and balance. New and experienced yogis are welcome. Yoga is for everybody! You will need to bring a mat and wear comfortable clothing! A regular yoga practice can help you enjoy a greater sense of calm in your very busy lives. Attending class gives you the privilege of joining others in your neighborhood and it also gives you a chance to give back to your community. We give a food donation to attend this class. The food is distributed to area children through their School Backpack Program. The food helps to feed these children from Friday through Monday and helps them return to class on Monday ready to learn. We have collected and distributed nearly ten tons of food over the past eight years. If you have any questions, please email Julie Heess, 200ERYT at jah1996@aol.com

New Year, New You Perhaps your New Year’s resolution or plan for the New Year included getting healthy. It is very common to want to start the New Year off right with healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes that can make us feel better. Often, we start the New Year off great. In turn, we feel great, then summer comes along- lazy days, vacations, then holidays, bad habits, and here we are again.
swimming, utilizing our neighborhood gym, or any of the great classes offered right within our clubhouse.
Our health and wellness should always be our top priority. After all, our bodies are what we depend on to carry us through this life. The good news is being healthy is so easy to obtain. Start with baby steps. Don’t change everything at once. Ease yourself into healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
The next plan of action: Introducing your body to yoga. Yoga is truly the fountain of youth. It keeps our spine flexible, our joints lubricated, aids in circulation, balance and mobility. We also receive so many other benefits from a weekly yoga practice. You can join a group class, or practice right in your own home. Yoga can be done anywhere. From breathing, strengthening, balancing and stretching, yoga can calm the mind, bring us focus and clarity, aid in digestion, prevent injury, and aids in muscle recovery at a much faster rate. Yoga is for all ages and all stages!
Begin with making better decisions about your diet. Choose more plant- based options. Stay away from simple sugars, in all its forms, and trans fat. Eat meats and carbs moderately. There are so many great options out there that make it easier than ever to eat healthy. One rule of thumb is to avoid anything white, including sugar, flour, bread and rice. Also avoid excess salt and butter. Try to eat lots of whole grains, nuts and seeds, raw or steamed veggies, fresh fruit, and drink lots of water.
The final plan of action: Make time for yourself. Do the things that make you happy. We’re always in a hurry. We put too much on our plates, and never make time for ourselves. We need this time to nurture our souls, and promote self-love, healing, and awareness within. Take the time to unplug, disconnect, and connect with yourself. Engaging in a hobby, writing, painting, or maybe just curling up with your favorite book. Take that time. Small changes in our lives can reap big rewards.
The next plan of action: Exercise. Did you know that getting your blood pumping daily through any cardiovascular exercise can lower high blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease? Our community offers so many great outlets for that. From enjoying a nice walk around the lake, tennis, pickle ball,
Wishing you all the happiest and healthiest New Year, with blessings abundant.

Lose the Weight for good this year! 1. It starts in the mind. Sometimes, what or how we eat is tied to our emotions (depression) or some past trauma or event. Anger, depression and negative emotions can trigger unhealthy eating habits. To lose and keep weight off, be courageous and get to the root of the problem. Consider going to a support group (Overeaters Anonymous, etc.), speak with a counselor or someone you trust and can talk to (even better if that person/group share the same struggles and has weight loss success). Also journaling before or after eating/binging can be therapeutic and give you a lot of insight as to why you overeat or eat when you’re not hungry. Write down how you’re feeling before and/or after you eat. You can be successful! 2. Eat for fuel/energy. Food does taste good and is a big part of social and family get togethers, which is great, however, food’s main purpose is to provide vital nutrients and energy for our bodies to function and live. Our body breaks down protein, carbs and fat daily to support every cell in our body. Instead of eating out of emotions, figure out what your triggers are and eat to live not live to eat. 3. Know how many calories your body needs. While our getting emotionally healthy, lose the recommended 1 lb. a week by eating the calories your body needs on a daily basis and exercising. Reduce your daily calories by 500 (250 in exercise and 250 in calories for example). 5. With goals, make a plan – For instance, plan to get some heart-pumping cardio on most days (include a HIIT or Internal training sess), fit in a Pilates/Yoga session once or twice a week, and 2 – 3 days focus on strength training, targeting all major muscle groups. Have at least one day of active recovery or even a rest day if you’ve earned it. Or whatever is doable for you. Be sure to wear supportive shoes and if you work out at the gym, always have an extra set of workout clothes in the car so there are no excuses. Another suggestion is If you’re a morning person, get up 30 minutes extra to do some cardio or lift weights. Set it up so you make exercise and eating the calories your body needs to lose a priority and a habit!!! 6. Reward yourself as you hit your goals or have changed a behavior. When you achieve that first goal or lose that first 10 lbs., reward yourself with something that isn’t food. For example, new jeans, massage, or night out with the guys/gals. Reward yourself with anything that will motivate you to reach them and keep going. Hope you had a very, Merry Christmas and have a very, happy New Year! I hope it’s your healthiest year yet. Can God Find a True Worshipper? According to John 4:23, God is seeking. The fact that anyone seeks for anything implies that what they are looking for is either not available or scarce. So, what is it that God is looking for? The answer... true worshippers... The truth is, not everyone that goes to church, not everyone that keeps the church schedule, not everyone raised in church, not everyone that claims to be Christian, and for that matter claims to be a preacher or other worker in the house of God is a true worshipper. There were many hypocrites in Jesus’ day just as there are many in ours. Matthew 15:8-9 states, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” People go to church for many reasons and have different motives for doing so. Such motives can be: • Habit • Self-righteousness • Spouse Hunting • Social Fulfillment • Extracurricular activity • Sing in the Choir • Perform in the Dance Ministry • Perform as a musician • Work in the mission field • Perform charitable work and so, on and so on.... You’ll be surprised at why people come to church and not everyone that does is doing so explicitly for God. Many come to fulfill their obligation to man (their church leaders) and others come to save face with their more dedicated peers by not being absent. You see, when it comes to God, every motive for doing what we do unto Him and for Him is examined before it is either accepted or rejected by the Lord. Traditions of Braselton
V oice, V iew, O pinions The problem we have is that in doing what we do, we do not consider Him first - He is not the motive for doing what we do. We have other predominant motives that propel our labors, our dedication to the ministry, and our religious acts. Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” This affirms that those who are familiar with church work are not secure, if they do not have a personal relationship with God. What we must understand is that relationship takes place in the heart and not in the action or behavior. For, actions are driven by many motives, but actions driven by the heart with all yielding unto God in a sincere relationship, are actions welcomed by the Lord because they are manifestations of knowing who He is. You sing because you know and love Him (no other reason). You attend services because you want getting to know Him to be the focus of your coming (no other reason). You usher not because it’s expected of you, but rather, because your relationship with the Lord compels you to render yourself in any way you can as a show of appreciation for what He has accomplished through Calvary’s cross. God, for so long has searched for the heart of men, but because the convenience of religion offers a person a justified conscience, we cannot delve deeper to actually know what God wants. We think that what we do is enough, but whenever the heart (the heart to know and love God) is absent from whatever it is that you do in the house of God, or for God, you should know that it is not seen in the heavens. In this hour of God’s seeking, will He find you? Will you be counted as a true worshipper, or will you be one of those in whom He says, “...depart from me...” Please join Lloyd, Portia, Ranah, and Sariah for Wednesday night Bible study at 7pm! Traditions of Braselton Newsletter – January 2020
Variety is the Spice of Life During this month typically associated with New Year’s Resolutions and the pursuit of self-improvement, Paran Homes would like to give Traditions of Braselton a big, collective pat on the back. We happen to believe this community is already really AWESOME! You’ll often hear about the importance of diversity in the workplace, but did you realize that it’s also the foundation for a truly special place to live? Traditions of Braselton prides itself on being relatively – well – untraditional… in the traditional sense. Our sprawling community is made up of a variety of people from different races, cultures, countries, religious backgrounds, political leanings, personal interests, sexes and age groups. And yet, we all live together in harmony! That’s because we get it… variety really IS the spice of life. According to LegacyProject.org, when looking through the lens of age alone, intergenerational connections can be beneficial for all involved. It can help shape a
better community with better quality of life for all ages. Research shows that children need four to six caring adults in their lives to fully develop emotionally and socially. Those people don’t have to all be relatives, mind you. A coach, teacher or even an adult neighbor can form a mutually rewarding bond with a child. In a community that has young families on one end of the spectrum and empty nesters on the other, it’s natural to fall back into societal patterns that have been in place for centuries – where the elders served as mentors for the youngest in the “tribe.” Through adult mentoring – as simple as a few hours spent gardening, baking or crafting together, children develop life skills while building their self-esteem and confidence. One study showed that when a child is mentored by an adult, they are: 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs; 27% less likely to begin using alcohol; and 52% less likely to skip school. For the adult who is doing the mentoring, these relationships can bring a sense of joy and purpose. For young parents, it’s wonderful to have a touchstone – someone who knows and cares for your child who you can turn to in need with trust. Add race to the mix and the diversity of our community helps break down the walls of stereotypes and bigotry in young children – both here and beyond the boundaries of our neighborhood. As much as we celebrate our unity as a community, we also celebrate all the things that make us different. Our Empty Nesters club is perhaps one of our most popular in terms of activities. From parties and monthly card games to trips out on the town, this group is one that others aspire to become. At “everyone’s invited” community events, you can see the blending of generations and all the other attributes that make us different and unique. Prospective neighbors see that when they attend our events or respond to a friendly wave when driving through our neighborhood. You have a hand in making them feel welcome and encouraging them to become a part of Traditions of Braselton’s growing network of residents. So, instead of providing you with tips for ways we can improve as a community, we just want to say “WAY TO GO, TRADITIONS! Keep up the great work.”
From everyone at Paran Homes, we wish you and your family a blessed 2020!
