This Could Be You! day you notice a small fleck of discolored paint peeling on your Imagine ...one breakfast room wall. By the time you discover their presence, the damage is done. And when you realize the whole thing was easily preventable, it makes you sick to your stomach!

Random acts of kindness Random acts of kindness were performed, grocery store and pharmacy pickups for at risk neighbors, giveaways made from basement and closet cleaners/reorganizers/redecorators. Family Parents got to be reacquainted with their children, took bike rides, walks, played in the yard, did arts and crafts projects and science projects, worked puzzles and played games. Kids did kid things, like build forts and ride bikes. The neighborhood became home to lots of walkers and bicyclists, yard workers and sidewalk and driveway chats. A kinder gentler place. When Markets Are Down, What Should You Do About RMDs? Keep these strategies and considerations in mind.

To ensure that tax liabilities aren’t deferred indefinitely, investors are obligated by the IRS to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from most retirement accounts. For those born after June 30, 1949, RMDs begin at age 72; for those born earlier, RMDs begin at age 70½. Volatile markets add a layer of complexity to taking these distributions, however. As the RMD amount is determined by the retirement account’s value at prior year-end as well as your life expectancy, a quick downturn in the stock market at the beginning of the year can cause a lot of stress for individuals who are then required to take a distribution – and who face a steep 50% penalty if they don’t. It’s not a simple topic. However, there are a few considerations and strategies to bear in mind when thinking about your RMDs amid volatile market conditions. If this is your first RMD, you have the option to delay Normally, RMDs must be taken by December 31. However, your first RMD can be delayed until April 1 of the year after you reach the relevant RMD age (72 if you were born after June 30, 1949; 70½ if born earlier). Those extra months can provide a bit of flexibility in timing, allowing for market conditions to potentially stabilize or improve before you take a withdrawal from the account in question. However, keep in mind that if you delay your first RMD into the year after reaching your age trigger, you’ll still need to satisfy that year’s RMD before December 31 – meaning you’ll be taking two distributions within the same calendar year. This means more taxable income, which may push you into a higher marginal tax bracket or increase certain costs such as Medicare premiums. Bottom line: a bit of flexibility in timing can be a positive, but be sure you’ve thought through the tax implications. If you’re still working, you may have the option to delay If you’ve reached the age of taking RMDs but are still working, you may be able to defer taking the RMD from your current employer’s retirement account. The IRS generally allows your first RMD from an employer’s retirement plan – such as a 401(k), 403(b) or profit-sharing plan – to be taken by April 1 in the year after you retire, provided that your company allows you to delay past normal RMD age and you own less than 5% of the business. Much like the first RMD-delay option noted above, you’ll want to think through how taking two RMDs in the next calendar year might affect your tax situation. Different accounts have different rules If you have multiple individual retirement accounts (IRAs), you have the option to withdraw the total RMD amount owed for all of your IRAs from one or more of them, rather than taking out each RMD from its specific account. A similar rule applies with 403(b) accounts. However, RMDs from other types of retirement plans like 401(k) and 457(b) plans have to be taken separately from each account. Talk to your financial professional to determine where you have location flexibility and where you don’t. Use cash, if available If you’re already holding cash in an account you have to withdraw from, take advantage of it. Instead of selling investments at reduced values, simply request the cash out of the account to satisfy the RMD. If there’s not enough cash, sell thoughtfully Hopefully, you have an appropriate asset allocation that has a mix of asset types – including stocks and bonds – tailored to your individual risk tolerance. If that’s the case, you and your financial advisor can discuss which assets would be best to sell to satisfy the RMD amount, hopefully avoiding locking in losses on positions that have suffered the worst. For the charitably minded, QCDs are an option If you don’t need the income yourself and have a cause close to your heart, you can take a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), which allows you to donate up to $100,000 to charity from your IRA and have it count toward your RMD. This strategy won’t help if you need to sell investments to raise cash, but it will help on taxes, as the gift won’t be included in your taxable income (even though it fulfills your RMD). If you don’t need the income, consider an in-kind distribution Another option if you don’t need the cash flow – an “in-kind distribution.” This involves requesting that securities in your IRA be transferred to your after-tax brokerage account – which is particularly beneficial if you’re holding a position you don’t want to sell. This strategy doesn’t avoid taxes on the RMD, but it can help reduce transaction costs (since nothing is being sold or repurchased) while maintaining your position in the security at all times. Bear in mind that an in-kind IRA distribution will reset the cost basis of your holding. Remember, you can reinvest Regardless of which strategy you decide to use, keep in mind that you can choose to reinvest any money you withdrew to satisfy RMDs by moving it to an after-tax brokerage account. This can help provide an opportunity for that money to grow if markets recover. If you’re already happy with your specific holdings, however, consider the in-kind distribution strategy mentioned above. Turn to a professional for tailored guidance Everyone’s situation is unique, and there are nuanced strategies for satisfying RMDs that go beyond the approaches covered here. Your tax professional and financial advisor are the best sources for information that’s personalized to your specific situation and future goals.

Please note, changes in tax laws may occur at any time and could have a substantial impact upon each person’s situation

Jackson County School System April 7 at 7:21 AM ·

Hey, #OneJacksonGA! We promised we would let you know about proposed alternative dates for graduation ceremonies if we are NOT able to honor the members of the Class of 2020 as scheduled in May, and here we go! Calendars ready? East Jackson Comprehensive High School — if we can't do it Thursday, May 21, at 8 PM as scheduled, we'll go for Saturday, June 13, at 8 AM; and if that doesn't work, Saturday, July 18, at 8 AM. Jackson County Comprehensive High School — if we can't do it Friday, May 22, at 8 PM as scheduled, we'll go to Friday, June 12, at 8 PM; and if that doesn't work, Friday, July 17, at 8 PM. We know the uncertainty is far from ideal — and our biggest hope is that we will be able to hold to the original schedule — but we want families to be able to plan around specific dates as they make other decisions/arrangements. We hope all our graduates know how much our whole community wants to celebrate this important milestone with them in an incredibly challenging and unique year! Remember: #StaySafe #StayStrong #StayHome — #ThoseJacksonCountyKids deserve their celebration because (really) #ItsAllAboutTomorrow!

HEARTFELT GRATITUDE

From Carol Higbie

On Saturday, February 29th, only 12 days after he was first diagnosed, my husband, Bruce, died from pancreatic cancer. Just a couple of weeks earlier, you might have seen us on our daily walks in the neighborhood, picking up trash and chatting with other walkers and their 4-legged companions. To say that our family was shocked and devastated would be a terrible understatement. But the love and support we received from this wonderful Traditions community truly held us up during the darkest days of our lives. We received Bruce’s diagnosis on February 17 and our two outof-town children immediately flew in and joined our other 2 children and their families at our home. As soon as our friends and neighbors heard about Bruce’s illness and his upcoming schedule for chemotherapy, we were inundated with calls, texts, cards and offers to help. We had amazing friends who immediately started a meal train to provide food for our large family. They brought homemade meals, restaurant meals, coolers full of supplies, paper products, water, wine, ingredients for lunches, and so much more! I can’t tell you what a gift it was to not have to shop for food or prepare meals. Instead we were able to focus on spending precious time together, not realizing we would only have a few days. Unfortunately, Bruce’s disease progressed so quickly that he was

not able to begin chemotherapy and he passed away at home with me and his children. As we made plans for his funeral service at our church, we knew we also wanted to honor him with a celebration of life here in the neighborhood. The funeral was scheduled for Saturday, March 7, and the Empty Nesters group graciously cancelled their scheduled monthly event to allow our family to hold Bruce’s celebration of life in the owner’s clubhouse. The warm and caring people in this neighborhood provided amazing food and drink for everyone who attended the celebration. Time and time again, our friends and relatives came up to me and remarked on what a wonderful neighborhood we live in that our neighbors would host such an incredible afternoon. Friends, neighbors and relatives spoke about Bruce and what he had meant to them. It was a sad day, but also very heartwarming for our family. At the celebration of life, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much Bruce would have enjoyed his “party,” and how honored he would have been at the outpouring of love and support. You will probably never truly understand how much this neighborhood, and all of our friends here, have meant to Bruce and to me…and now to our children. But I can assure you that your kindness will never be forgotten.

NEWS FROM THE EMPTY NESTERS

OUR COMMUNITY EMPTY NESTERS COMMITTEE CHAIR AND OTHERS PROVIDING LOCAL MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WITH ISOLATION GOWNS Our community Empty Nesters Committee Chair and others providing local medical professionals with Isolation Gowns Judy York is a nurse anesthetist at Northside Gwinnett. She understands what our medical professionals on the frontlines are experiencing firsthand. Judy York devised a plan to make isolation gowns for fellow medical staff who are experiencing dire shortages in PPE (personal protective equipment). She got the plans approved, solicited donations of heat-sealing guns and sheeting plastic from various Home Depots and then volunteers. Beth Grimes is a retired nurse and was looking for ways to assist the nursing community when she saw a post on Facebook by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Judy York, whom she worked with at what Northside Gwinnett is now. Beth spent one morning with a group of retired nurses, CRNA and others in our masks and gloves creating 200 isolation gowns that went to NEGA hospital. The gowns are made from sheeting plastic that was cut to one size fits all. They used heat guns to seal the arms and sides, then cut out the neck, arms and sides and partially up the back. Medical staff could then slip them over their head and not worry about tying them. Each gown was then individually packaged in Ziplock bags for transport. Beth then posted her morning on Facebook and the response was overwhelming with people wanting to help. Beth solicited more people from Traditions; Sheila Anderson, Carol Higbie, Jen Hohman, Cheryl Morrell; as well as others to assist in the following days. In 2 ½ days this group, along with other volunteers, has created over 800 gowns for donation to local hospitals, medical offices, etc. and was still making more over the next few days. The response from the medical professional has been overwhelming. NEGA even sent a task force person to see our process so they could duplicate it and keep some of their staff working. We are very thankful to 12 Stone Church Hamilton Mill for allowing this group to use their worship center and for the pastor and his wife for volunteering their time as well. Thank you, Judy, for getting this group together to help make a difference in a medical professional’s day!

This masked woman, Judy Jackman York, brought an idea to fruition and is making a difference. Beth Grimes, Empty Nesters Committee Chair

GOLF GROUPS COUPLES GOLF

This group has three consecutive tee times every Sunday morning. In Spring, Summer and Fall, they begin play at 9:30 AM. More tee times can be added depending on how many couples wish to play. Please contact Lynn Kolb at 706-824-0247 or galynn20@yahoo.com for more information. Every Tuesday, Lynn sends a text to interested parties asking for a response by Saturday morning. All are welcome to join in and they look forward to adding more couples as the weather warms up. *Couples on Sunday – Noon during winter.

LADIES’ GOLF GROUP

Currently, the ladies have two standing tee times Monday thru Friday starting at 8:30 AM. If you are interested in joining the Ladies Golf Group (even occasionally), please email Pam Poppe at ppoppe@mindspring.com if you wish to be included. Each Friday, Pam sends an email to the group asking which days you are interested in golfing during the coming week. She only asks for a 48-hour notice so she can add or cancel tee times. Don’t worry about handicaps since the skill levels vary widely. These women golf for fun! If the morning times don’t work for you, please let Pam know if you are interested in playing 9 holes at other times of the day.

SENIOR MEN’S GOLF GROUP

The senior men gather to play an organized format of stroke play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You never know who you

will get paired with on these days, so it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow neighbors and make new friends. On Thursdays, it’s just pair-up and play with whomever you like (assuming they want to play with you too). The course is closed on Tuesdays. Currently, our block of tee times starts at 9:30 AM. You can play as often or as little as you like; just show up at least 15 minutes before the first tee time. This is a social group with members of varying skill levels. Once the virus is behind us and the expected updates are made to the restaurant, every spring and fall the men will again gather with their significant others at the club for a fun evening of dinner and fellowship. Currently with the virus, we will continue to play as we are able. With respect to social distancing, there will be a one per person per cart. To ease the crunch for cart that this is causing, the Club has waived the rule against driving your persona; cart as long as it does not have studded tires or is a high rider. For more information, contact Steve Morrell at shmorrell44@gmail.com or at 1-706-654-6034 (h) or at 770-861-610 (c).

MAKE A SPLASH THIS SUMER WITH

Aqua Fitness

Make A Splash This Sumer With Aqua Fitness Hopefully, by the time you are reading this May newsletter, we will be FREE and can live and move and SWIM! Please join us this summer at the pool for water exercise or aquatics on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings at 9:00 am! It is one of the best non-impact fitness activities around and just about anybody can participate. From teenagers to mature adults, pregnant women, those who suffer with back problems, arthritis or recovering from an injury, all size and shapes can benefit from aquatic classes! Because of the weightlessness we have in the water, aquatics is less stressful on the joints, bones and muscles. It’s also great for those new to exercise. However, don’t get the idea that just because it doesn’t hurt, you can’t get a great workout in the pool. Water exercise can encompass all of the components of fitness: cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. And, when done regularly, water exercise can help reduce body fat. Yahoo! If you’re not yet convinced, consider these benefits of water exercise: 1. It works your heart – you do get your heart rate up and the pool is perfect for those who find certain movements on land like running, striding, leaping or even dancing too jarring or painful. 2. Water adds resistance – you love to walk and do, but strength training is lacking in your weekly fitness regimen. Water provides awesome resistance, comparable to lifting weights. Cup your hands and push or pull the water away from you and feel the burn (: 3. Flexible benefits of water – an often-overlooked

28

APRIL 2020

benefit of water exercise is its effect on flexibility. Stretching, especially in warmer summer temp water, can be easier than when on land. As the effects of gravity are lessened, we can move our joints through a wider range of motion and achieve long term flexibility. Okay, you’re ready to take the plunge! Here’s what to expect when you take the class and some tips to help you succeed: • Get to class on time. You don’t want to miss a thing, especially the good warm-up at the beginning. Following, we’ll have a period of cardiovascular and muscle conditioning that gradually increases and then decreases in intensity, with a cool-down. Stay for the cooldown as it will include plenty of flexibility exercises for the entire body and prevent any muscle soreness you might possibly have (very unlikely though!). • You won’t have to memorize anything. Just show up and follow my lead. • Make sure to attend the first few classes at the beginning of the month. We will do a specific routine for a month and then change so be sure to come that first week/class. That way you can get familiar with the routine and really give it your best when you know what exercise is coming up next. • Instruction will be easy to hear, see and follow and we’ll have some great music. I have a Bluetooth speaker and headset so no worries that you won’t be able to hear me over the music. Some days I will get in the water with you! And, you can be assured that you will get a safe, effective workout. I am certified instructor and have special training in aquatic exercise and first aid/CPR. Most of all, have fun!! Smile, laugh and play in the water while feeling like a kid again and getting a great workout. In fact, instead of feeling out of breath or exhausted, you may feel surprisingly calm yet energetic, following an aquatic exercise class. So, even if you are a dip-your- toe-in-thewater type of person, don’t be afraid to take the plunge into water fitness this summer. TRUE FAITH BRINGS UNITY When a believer truly has faith in God, a new nature and wouldn’t let them play with each other, but keep them in their own rooms (own churches). of being one with those of like faith becomes a part of that person; regardless of racial background (Jew The Bible depicts all believers as belonging to one nor Gentile), socioeconomic background (slave nor body, the body of Christ. However, by the way all free), or societal perceptions regarding differences “believers” display their “faith,” it would appear that in rights for men and women (male the church is divided. Let me ask a nor female). For all of these traits question: Since the Bible compares Gal 3:26-28 (NIV) which make us what we are in this the church to a body, when was the - “So in Christ Jesus fallen world are insignificant when last time you went out to dinner you are all children we function as the family of God in and left one of your hands at home? becoming one with Christ. of God through faith, When was the last time you went for all of you who for a walk with one leg? Ridiculous This being so, why do we still as that may sound, it is what the were baptised into find divisions among those that Christian population at large does. Christ have clothed call themselves “believers?” Churchgoers are so adamant in professing they are of the faith, yet when it comes to living the life of faith, they uphold division (cliques and circles). Not only are these small groups found within a single church, but even among many churches, “believers” do not even fellowship with other believers that do not belong to the same church.

From the perspective of an outsider looking in, I would wonder about that. Why many Christians say they serve the same God, yet they cannot even fellowship amongst each other. “I go to this church,” “I belong to this ministry,” “My pastor is so-andso,” “We don’t do that where I go to church,” “We believe a little differently,” etc. You would think that God, as a father figure was cruel to His children

When believers do not carry about in unity with others of like faith, we render the body of Christ and our Lord’s mission ineffective. Not only so, but the world without Christ will not acknowledge our God because of the divisions we manifest and uphold. Consider Jesus’s final prayer in the Gospel of Saint John, John 17:23 (KJV) - “I in them, and thou (God the Father) in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” If we have the same Father, let’s not treat each other like strangers, for we are the family of God. IN THE SPOTLIGHT

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The "Tailor-Made" Side of Traditions No longer satisfied with being “the best kept secret in Jackson County,” as word continues to spread about the lifestyle-centric phenomenon that is Traditions of Braselton, home buyers and builders alike clamor to become part of this community. In recent months, our roster of builders has grown steadily – particularly among custom builders eager to have their finest work grace Traditions’ rolling landscape. The response from buyers is extremely positive, as they want options – not just in the builder they choose, but also in the façade, finishes and features of their new home. According to one of Traditions’ newest incoming families – The Binghams – the ability to take an existing floor plan and customize it to fit their family of six was one of the many things that drew them to the community. Having chosen to work with Inspired Custom Homes, the couple was able to add a bonus room over the garage that didn’t exist in the original floor plan, as well as incorporate an extended kitchen island with seating enough to accommodate their growing family. “This is the second home that we’ve built,” said Chad Bingham. “The first go-around it was kind of more of a ‘you’re gonna get what you get… you can change the colors… that’s about all that you could do.’” Chad really appreciated the input, suggestions and involvement of their builder, Addison Wilson, who took the time to understand what the Binghams were looking for – from lot and use of space to colors and designer finishes. He even accompanied the couple to their Design Studio appointments. “The flow of this house is really great and practical,” said Sarah Bingham – who listed the access door from

the master bedroom closet to her new laundry room as one of her favorite features. “It all just makes sense and represents good use of the space in every area.” “Everything in here looks like it belongs, looks like it has a place and like it was designed originally to be there,” added Chad. “But you’d be amazed at how much of this stuff was just on the fly.” In addition to Inspired Custom Homes, Traditions of Braselton is home to the following custom builders: •

Currahee Home Builders

Sandstone Custom Homes
