BUSINESS PROFILE

THE BRIDGE BUILDER By Will Allen Dromgoole An old man going a lone highway, Came, at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide. Through which was flowing a sullen tide The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. “Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build this bridge at evening tide?” The builder lifted his old gray head; “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followed after me to-day A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!

A LAUDABLE LEGACY

F

STORY BY EMILIE MCGRATH  PHOTOS BY SCOTT ROGERS

or Lawson Air Conditioning and Plumbing, Inc. founder Lester Dean Lawson, creating a legacy of honor and integrity defined who he was both personally and professionally. He carried this poem in his wallet, and 73 years after he first opened his business, his sonin-law Vince, his daughter Debbie, and his grandson Travis are still exceeding customers’ expectations using the bridge he built decades ago. Forty plus year customer Leonard Parks shares, “I knew L.D. and his family when he came back to Gainesville after World War II. L.D. was one of the most honest people I have ever known. Now, I have worked with both his daughter and grandson as well. They all uphold the same type of customer service

skills and vision L.D. had so many years ago. It is truly a fantastic company from top to bottom.” L. D. Lawson returned to Gainesville with his wife Clovie in 1946 after serving in World War II. Embodying a true entrepreneurial spirit, L.D. placed the first air conditioning unit in a ladies apparel store known as the Diana Shop in downtown Gainesville, before most people knew what air conditioning was, much less had it in their homes. Lawson was the second Carrier dealer founded in the state of Georgia and has served as the top leader for the company in the state, second only to the Carrier dealer in Atlanta. In 2018, L.D. was posthumously inducted into the Carrier Hall of Fame, a lifetime honor given

only to two people in the nation last year. In the words of David Kesterton, Mingledorff’s President (Carrier Dealer) and lifetime friend “L.D. was a flagship leader in the air conditioning industry. He was a leader both at work and in the community. He took risks that produced great results, not just for his personal sake but also for the benefit of all those around him. He was a true visionary and one of the hardest workers in the history of the industry.” In 1983, L.D.’s son-in-law, Vince Davis, joined the company, and shortly after in 1985, his daughter Debbie Lawson Davis joined as well. Debbie, the youngest of four children, first started in the company fulfilling a clerical role, and thirty-five years later, serves as the CFO and owner, alongside Vince. Husband to Vince, mother to Taylor and Travis, and a two-time breast cancer survivor, Debbie states that her father L.D. instilled in her the values of honesty and hard work at an early age. Debbie states, “I have always felt a deep feeling of responsibility to the company and most importantly, to continue on with the expectations my father has always maintained. We always have valued our employees and have an excellent staff that is like a big family, working to-

gether to take care of each other, each other’s families, and of course, our customers. We still strive to uphold an old-fashioned employer-employee relationship of ‘an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work.’” Debbie’s sentiments of the employee-employer relationships resound strongly with HVAC technician Rigo Mojica, a lifelong Gainesville resident who stated, “Lawson is an excellent company to work for. I am very thankful for them and the blessing they have been to myself and my family. They encourage and support me in all my endeavors to advance and improve both personally and professionally. They treat me so well, I feel very passionate to go and do my very best work for them and our customers.” As for the future of Lawson, the bridge that L.D. built remains strong and steady. L.D.’s grandson, Travis and his wife, Ashley, the third generation of the business, are working hard to learn the in and outs of the industry, both how to effectively run the business and how to maintain the same level of core values first exhibited by L.D. Travis states. “A strong path has been created by both my grandfather and parents to preserve this thriving business and the oldfashioned mom and pop feel it still exhibits.

Although at times the pressure feels high to uphold these standards, the end result is always worth the effort. I am excited and honored to carry on this legacy to the next generation.” In the words of Debbie Lawson Davis, “Lawson is not just a business, it is a family legacy, and that in itself, is priceless. We are excited about the future of Lawson and look forward to staying abreast with all of the technological changes in the industry while upholding our philosophy to give the highest level of individual car and concern to each customer.” L.D. died in 2000, after a long battle with cancer. Born in 1919, L.D. would have been 100 this year. And although he is no longer with us, the bridge he built for his family, his community, and his business, still exists for all of those who have come after him. When you build who you are and what your do on the basis of honesty, integrity, and selflessness, a legacy is created that never dies, but continues on in the hearts and minds of the generations that follow. WHILE YOU’RE AWAY, HERE’S WHERE YOUR PETS CAN PLAY

P

STORY BY ALISON REEGER COOK  PHOTOS BY DAVID COOK

et owners may feel guilty boarding their loyal companions when the rest of the family goes away on vacation, or owners have to take a work-related trip — fortunately for those in Hall County, these pet resorts will make sure your animal companions are in good hands. YOUR PUP CAN VACAY AT A B&B IN THE COUNTRY Out in the countryside of Lula, you can find a 10-acre dog daycare and boarding facility, Holly’s Bed and Biscuit, that has been caring for dogs of all shapes and sizes since 2008. Founded by Holly Crumley, the doggy “bed and breakfast” is a true canine paradise, offering both indoor and outdoor space, luxurious bedding, clean suites, and each kennel has a door that leads to a porch and yard area. Dogs that are 30 pounds or under can have access to a water park that includes a playground and pond with 250 gallons of water. Office dogs — reserved for

smaller and older dogs who need more attention — get to hang out together where the staff can keep a constant eye on them. For those with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels — Crumley’s breed of choice — there are celebrity suites that offer two couches per suite. Talk about pampered pooches! “I’ve been working with dogs my entire life, as I was raised on a dairy farm where we bred and raised working dogs like Australian Shepherds and Border Collies,” Crumley says. “Then about 16 years ago I became a dog breeder, and I decided it would be great to have a pet resort out in the country, like a mountain resort for dogs. I then adapted a foster program when the dogs I bred went to foster homes. Every single breeding dog I have lives in someone’s home, as a pet. My foster program is one of the coolest things on the planet, and I wish every breeder could adapt something like this.” Crumley remembers the rough start her resort had in the beginning — being out in

the country, it was tricky to make people aware of their presence. But once Crumley started to advertise in 2010, business was suddenly booming. “I was determined that it was going to work. We went from a couple of dogs to 60 dogs in 48 hours. We’ve done great every single year since — in the past 11 years, I think we’ve had about 6,000 dogs come through our B&B.” Holly’s Bed and Biscuit serves two primary purposes: half is for boarding, grooming, and training, and the other half is for special breeding programs. Crumley specializes in breeding Cavaliers, and her husband Steve breeds German Shorthaired Pointers. The B&B also employs a special trainer who can evaluate dogs with an aptitude test for emotional support and therapy. Most importantly, Holly’s Bed and Biscuit strives above all else to be a safe, happy place for dogs and their owners. “I tell everyone who works for me, when a dog walks in the door, you may not

know the owner’s name but you know the dog’s name. And you bend down and greet that dog,” says Crumley. “All the owner cares about is are we going to take good care of their dog. People may get emotional leaving their dog in a facility, but they need to know that we love all dogs and we’re going to reassure the dog they are in a safe place. We knock ourselves out to make sure they’re well taken care of.” A SUITE TREAT FOR ALL FURRY AND FEATHERY FAMILY Pets Inn Suites in Braselton was founded by Angela Peevy and her husband Ken who purchased the first facility, originally an equine hospital, in September 2005. They expanded on the property, building suites over the period of a few years, and officially opened December 2006. “I used to show American Cocker Spaniels, and back then there were very few pet care facilities available in the area,” said Peevy, who also owns a pet resort in Dacula called Indian Shoals Pet Resort. “People asked me about where they could board their pets, and there was a need, so Pets Inn Suites began to fill that need.” Peevy has been in the pet care business for 30 years, taking care of dogs, cats, and exotic pets. Pets Inn Suites provides 10 dif-

ferent sizes of indoor and outdoor suites, which includes deluxe suites designed like human-sized bedrooms with furniture and even televisions. The spaces are modified to fit any animal’s personality — more social pets can be in the areas with more neighbors, and those that need a more secluded space can be in quieter suites, which could include window seats to watch the outside world. Family-sized accommodations are available for large families of dogs who wish to stay and play together, and for outdoorsy pups, dogs can go out four times a day to the play yards. “We wanted to be able to provide care for pets emotionally as well as physically. We felt like we could approach it in a different way so it would be more like a vacation for the pets rather than just a storage solution. We wanted it to be a fun experience where they could have a social environment as well as being cared for,” says Peevy. Pets Inn Suites also provides a grooming salon and “a la carte” activities, such as nature walks, playtime in the parks, kiddy pools and water toys, ball-tossing machines, and TLC time where pets can have one-on-one sessions with a staff member for their favorite past time. Doggy daycare is also available for owners who may have

long work days and do not want their pets alone all day. Pet owners are welcomed to go to Pets Inn Suites for tours before deciding if their pet is best suited for boarding. On staff is a large variety of experts with animal science degrees and veterinarian experience to watch over the health of the furry guests. Because of the wide array of animal types that come through Pets Inn Suites, the staff have to be prepared for anything to come through the doors — birds, turtles, snakes, pigs, even one unusual case of a clutch of turkey eggs in an incubator, when the owners worried the eggs might hatch while they were gone. “All animals are individuals with specific likes and dislikes, and being able to provide to meet those needs rather than just one streamlined offering does help them to be happier and enjoy their stay away from home,” says Peevy. “When you can customized their stay around what makes them happiest, then they’re healthier, happier, and you develop a relationship with them.” To learn more about Holly’s Bed and Biscuit, you may visit www.hollysbandb.com or call 770-983-1987. HEALTHY DRINKS AT BARKIN’ BREWS CAFÉ

co-owner of Fido’s World, Dee Whitenton spends a majority of her time at the pet-care facility off Skelton Road in Gainesville. She discovered it was hard to find time for lunch, especially a healthy one. “I had to leave and go to a restaurant and just eat a salad,” Whitenton said. Then she had a thought. Some of her Fido’s World customers might have the same issue of having to leave for a bite to eat. “That’s when we came up with Barkin’ Brews Café,” Whitenton said. Debuting three months after Fido World’s opened, the café features organic and power smoothies, signature fresh juicies, espresso and coffee. Barkin’ Brews also offers acai bowls, which are mixtures of fruits and almond or coconut milk with toppings. For example, an “Awesome Acai” bowl contains acai, banana, blueberry, strawberry and almond milk. Topping choices include granola, banana, blueberry, strawberry, chia seeds and honey.

It proved a big hit to customers, including regular client Brandice Polley. “Barkin’ Brews is awesome,” she said, adding the acai bowl and flavored coffee are among her favorites. “I love that it’s not typical.” Polley is also looking forward to the newest offering at Barkin’ Brews – beer. “I’m stoked,” she said. “It will be a great addition.” Fido’s World co-owner Scot Rucker explained the idea to add beer stemmed from the growing popularity of tap rooms. “We started thinking what else goes along with hanging out with your dog and other pet lovers,” Rucker said. “Now, our clients can come and hang out with their dogs and have a beer.” He hopes to have the alcohol license by late summer and the remodeled part of the space for the beer completed by fall. And Barkin’ Brews already has a bartender ready to serve the customers. Whitenton’s daughter, Bethany, has earned her bartender’s license. The Uni-

versity of Alabama-Birmingham student is looking forward to serving at the family business in another capacity. Currently she works in Barkin’ Brews when she is home from college. “I like making the coffee,” Bethany said, adding she took barista classes, too. “And I can make latte creations.” She also said she helped create some of the newest menu offerings with her mother. Bethany explained they tested them first before adding them to the menu. She said the food falls in line with their family’s healthy diet. “We added more choices and then took some things off,” Bethany said. All menu options are as healthy as possible. According to the menu, smoothies and juices contain no ice, no dairy, no added sugars, no artificial flavors, and no trans fat or any other fillers. All flavors are made with fresh ingredients free from preservatives and easily pronounced. “It ties into our healthy lifestyle,” Bethany said. H

POSITIVE EXPERIENCES CREATE A DOG’S LOVE OF LEARNING STORY BY J.K. DEVINE • PHOTOS BY AUSTIN STEELE

hen Bob Jackson first brought home Cassie, an English cream golden retriever, she appeared to be the ideal puppy. But then she changed. “She turned a complete 180 degrees from what she was,” Jackson said, adding he and his wife, Susan, could not figure out why. “For some reason, she was afraid of men. She would not socialize with other dogs. She even ran away from us in our own neighborhood.” The last straw came when Cassie took off across

six lanes of traffic one day. Jackson and his wife were at a loss, turning for help to their breeder, Hollie Mann. She suggested Scot Rucker, a wellknown dog trainer in northeast Georgia. “Scot kept her for three weeks at his boarding and training,” Jackson said. “Cassie was a completely different dog. He saved her. If we had not brought her to him, we would not have her.” Now, Jackson is a regular customer at Rucker’s business, Fido’s World, in Gainesville. Rucker opened the full-service pet center with his aunt, Dee Whitenton in June 2017.

1. Dogs mingle about prior to a scent training class at Fido’s World. 2. Attendees wait for scent training class. 3. Brandice Polley of Peachtree Corners works with her dog, Cassie, during a scent training class at Fido’s World. 4. Scot Rucker, co-owner of Fido’s World, leads a scent training class.

“It was the biggest life changer. I love her more because she listens and is well-behaved.” — Brandice Polley Rucker, who grew up with animals all his life, saw his family own and operate retail stores, and considered opening his own brick-and-mortar location. He had been running a boarding and training business out of his home. Rucker reached out to Whitenton to find a space. She located a building off Skelton Road in Gainesville. Rucker said he thought the building was too big for boarding and training. Whitenton then suggested they combine forces and open the facility with Rucker’s original concept along with grooming, dog day care, retail, pet supplies, and an outdoor dog park. He agreed. The business plan has succeeded. On an average day, between 60 and 70 dogs are dropped off for day camp or grooming. Other dog owners use Fido’s World boarding service. Dog owners from north, south, east and west of Gainesville trek on a weekly basis to Fido’s World for Rucker’s Dog Training classes. Those include beginner obedience, off leash, agility, dock diving, American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen, and, most recently, a scent training. These dog owners have developed a unique community who support and care for each other, Whitenton said.

“I didn’t expect people who didn’t know each other to have created a good circle of dog friendships,” she said. Rucker said many hang out all day at Fido’s World. One such customer is Brandice Polley from Peachtree Corners. She became acquainted with Fido’s World and Rucker’s dog training classes after rescuing her pitshepherd Ellie Mae. The pair started with the beginner obedience class. “It was the biggest life changer,” Polley said, explaining she can take Ellie Mae with her anywhere since she is trained. “I love her more because she listens and is wellbehaved.” Because of Ellie Mae’s success, Polley and her dog love spending time with other pet owners and their four-legged friends on Saturdays at Fido’s World. A typical Saturday begins with the morning “off leash” class. Next is lunch followed by the early afternoon class. About 4:30 p.m. Polley and other Fido’s World regulars attend the invitation-only lake walk at Little Hall Park. “We are able to let our dogs off the leash and play,” Polley said. “It’s great for the dogs, and it’s fun for us.” Whitenton said some of the regular customers also participate in Mission Syrah Paws, a nonprofit dedicated to improving

the well-being of community members by offering the love and support of canine counterparts. The owners and their therapy dogs visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and courtrooms. Mission Syrah Paws also provides trained therapy dogs to families with children who have developmental disabilities. As a member of Mission Syrah Paws, Jackson said he encourages people to pet and interact with his dog Cassie. “The people get attention from Cassie, and golden retrievers like Cassie love people,” Jackson said, explaining both receive the additional care they crave and need. The bonus for the retired Roswell, Georgia, man is giving back to the community. Jackson marks the end of his week with a visit to Fido’s World to rejuvenate him for the next week. “Coming here is great,” he said. “Spending Saturday here is like a Friday night for us.” Of course, none would be possible without Fido’s World and its co-owners, who rarely accept the praise they apparently deserve. “We love what we do,” Rucker said. “And we have a great time doing what we do.” H

PURR-FECT COMPANIONS Adopting a Fur-baby

STORY BY PAMELA A. KEENE  PHOTOS BY DAVID COOK

I

t’s hard to resist the deep purr and soft fur of a kitty. But before you think about bringing a kitten or cat into your family, take time to consider this life-long decision. “When you adopt a kitten or cat, you’re making a long-term choice to provide their care,” says Emily Boston, veterinary technician with Murrayville Veterinary Clinic off Thompson Bridge Road. “You’ll also be introducing a new dynamic into your family, especially if you have other pets already, so your decision should be carefully made.” Do you want a kitten or an older cat? “A kitten is full of energy and curiosity and may need additional attention,” Emily says. “If you adopt an older cat, it will also require extra socialization into your family, but older cats tend to be more calm.” Picking out a new kitten or cat shouldn’t be an impulsive decision. “Our concept is to give cats and their possible new owners a chance to get to know each other before making a decision,” says Sparrow Marcioni, executive director of Buford’s La Maison du Chat, translated to “The House of the Cat.” It is home for Catrangers Rescue. Catrangers was founded in 2005 and is focused on rescuing felines in danger of euthanasia at traditional shelters or under other circumstances. “We suggest that people come in and spend time with our cats, with at least one visit. It’s amazing to see how, in many cases, the cat picks the human, rather than the other way around.” La Maison du Chat sanctuary is located in a home environment, so that guests and prospective owners can visit with cats in a casual setting. Generally, there may be up to 45 cats in the cat café at a time. “Most cat cafes I know about in other parts of the country have only about 12 to 15 cats, so people really enjoy coming to visit here,” she says. “Because we rescue them and take in cats who may need to be rehomed for other reasons, we may be fostering as many as 130, but it’s not practical to bring them all to the café.”

1: Taking a much needed cat-nap, Starbucks is one furry feline who had to make a long trip from Qatar to Sparrow Marcioni’s cat sanctuary: CatRangers at La Maison du Chat in Buford. Now safe, he can spend his days in rest and relaxation. 2: CatRangers at La Maison du Chat makes sure to provide all the accommodations needed to their feline residents so they can feel at home, including plenty of toys and even a self-cleaning litter box. 3: Adoption coordinator Bonnie Maxson takes some time to pamper one of the many feline residents at La Maison du Chat. 4: “It’s amazing to see how in many cases, the cat picks the human, rather than the other way around.” Says Sparrow Marcioni, executive director of Buford’s La Maison du Chat, seen here with her husband, and one of the many feline residents. 5: When guests first step in the door, they will be greeted by a host of felines of differing ages, size etc. All milling about and playing in the many rooms. We’re told that there can be up to 45 cats in the café at a time!

Some may be under veterinary care or have special needs, such as ongoing medications or treatment for various minor illnesses and they are housed at foster homes and boarded at Veterinary Clinics. Sparrow says humans visit La Maison du Chat for many reasons, not just to explore the option of giving a kitty a forever home. “Some people come every week just to spend some quiet time petting the cats,” she says. “Perhaps they’ve lost a pet and aren’t ready to bring home a new one just yet, they can’t have a cat at home because of other pets or family allergies, or they may just seek the comfort of being with a cat that doesn’t demand anything of them, but unconditional love and some sweet purrs.” La Maison du Chat requires that perspective owners fill out written applications that include references and a veterinarian to contact. “This is for the well-being of the pet, and people who are very interested in adopting understand our need for a background check,” Sparrow says. “From the time someone visits for the first time, and when they can take their new fur baby home, it’s usually about a week to 10 days.” BRINGING HOME YOUR NEW FUR BABY Once you’ve signed the paperwork to adopt your new cat, the next step should be a visit to your family veterinarian. “The veterinarian will check the cat over for possible issues, create a pet health record going forward and advise you about the best way to introduce your new pet into your home and family,” Emily says. “You may need to update vaccinations or continue those that were started at the shelter.” Once you and your new kitty come home, keep the pet in a separate room or space away from other animals for a few days. “This will give the pets time to get used to each other’s smells and will also help prevent any infection from the new pet’s possible health issues,” Emily says. “You may need to monitor interactions between the pets to assess how well they are adapting to each other.” Kitten-proof your home by securing electrical cords and cords on blinds and window treatments. Also remove choking hazards, such as small toys if you have children, or things like paperclips or rubber bands. Block possible hiding places, such as spots behind dressers or in utility rooms. “Provide a safe place for your new pet, somewhere quiet and away from family activities,” Emily says. “You can put their bed, food and water, plus their litter box in this area so that they can have some privacy.” Purchase a collar, and include a tag with your phone number on it, in case your cat gets lost. Most cats from shelters are now microchipped, plus rabies tags are numbered and include your veterinarian’s number so that the pet can easily be reunited with its owner. “A cat can provide a lifetime of companionship and love,” Sparrow says. “And even though they are known for their independence, having a cat or cats in your family can bring years of joy and affection.” H

HORSES AS PART OF THE FAMILY

W

STORY BY AMBER TYNER  PHOTOS BY SCOTT ROGERS

ith abundant land and open space, North Georgia is the perfect place for horses to call home. Nicole Tucker, a Gainesville resident, said the animals just “want to be part of your family.” “Horses are amazing beasts,” she said. “They’ll give you unconditional love.” Last fall Nicole adopted her first horse, which she keeps on a 200-acre pasture in Jackson County that’s also home to over 20 other horses. “There’s a big misconception that you’ve got to spend a lot of money to get a horse,” she said. “And that’s false. You just look around, and people are needing to rehome their horses for financial reasons, for personal reasons, for family reasons, and they just want them to go to a loving home.” She said that’s what happened with her

pet, which is a 14-year-old Quarter Horse Paint. “We were very blessed for him to come into our lives,” she said. She said the horse, Jigsaw, is a real “people pleaser.” “I can go out there after having a crappy day, and he’ll stand by my side the entire time,” she said. “It’s just amazing how he knows when you’re having a bad day or when you’re having a good day. He just wants you to be happy.” Nicole first became interested in horses because of her daughter, Jennah Tucker, who also owns a horse on the pasture in Jackson County. “I saw how much she loved it,” Nicole said. “I loved watching her show her horse, and my other daughter was begging for a horse.” Jennah, 20, adopted her registered

Egyptian Arabian horse, Prince Salaa Ali, about three years ago. “They’re always there for you,” she said about the animals. “They’re nice just to hang around, even if you’re not riding them. They just give that presence.” She said they are especially great for children and families. “They’re very good to learn lessons with,” she said. “They teach kids responsibility, definitely manners, because horses will show you if you’re doing something wrong.” But she said horses can also require a lot of care. “There is a lot to do with taking care of animals,” she said. “I have them (the horses) just in a big pasture. Typically, you have to go check on them every day. But some places you can board your horse there, so people are there taking care of your horse

for you and you just pay that amount. Of course, feed is more expensive than dogs or cats. But it all depends on the horse. Some horses don’t eat much at all.” Nicole said her family uses Wendy Thompson, a 50-year-old certified equine massage therapist in North Georgia, to help care for their animals. “I travel to other people’s farms, and I work with a broad range of horses,” said Thompson. “I give a full massage. I work the deep tissue so the horses can do what the owners are asking more efficiently and more comfortably.” She said all horse types can benefit from massage therapy. “I would recommend it for someone who has just bought a new horse or adopted one,” she said. “That would be a great time to have the massage. Go for the body, loosen them up. If someone is in competition and they’re looking to get a head up on their competition, it is a great time to have a massage.” Thompson said owners should take care of their horses in other ways, too. “I think one of the best things people can do if they own horses is get educated,” she said. “They need to have their feet done by a professional about every 6-8 weeks, they need a yearly vet examine, they need sometimes having their teeth done.” She recommends if someone is interested in owning a horse, they try leasing one first. “Like you would a truck or a car, you lease them month per month or however the contract is, and you can have access to that animal without having to own it,” she said. She also suggested riding lessons, which are offered throughout North Georgia. “Take some lessons, go on some trail rides,” she said. One option is The Stables at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, which offers trail and pony rides, summer equestrian camps and riding lessons. “We ride daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” said Beth Pedaggi, manager at The Stables. “Reservations are highly recommended.” The facility provides guided rides that venture through several coves and around the lake.
