Honeypot Sugarbush Fine Flowers is a hidden treasure for North Georgia residents planning weddings, parties and other special events. The small but reputable business, which just opened in Cleveland last January, can handle all your floral needs.

“
do just about anything with flowers,” said Sidney Martin, owner of the company and Georgia native. “You’ve just got to give me enough time to get the flowers together, and I’ll get it out there for you.” He said the name of his company reflects the Southern charm he wanted to capture in White County. “Honeypot Sugarbush Fine Flowers really began for me when I stumbled upon the name about a decade or so ago,” he said. “Honeypot Sugarbush is the name of a protea, so it’s the name of a flower. I decided that if I were ever back in Georgia, I would definitely use that as the name of my business.” But the unique name of the company isn’t the only reason Honeypot Sugarbush Fine Flowers is so special. Martin, 51, brings about 30 years of industry experience to his business. “I got my start back in Atlanta in the early ‘90s,” he said about his career. “I was going to art school and picked up a parttime job at a local florist who happened to be the in-house florist for First Baptist Atlanta. I just started out there sweeping the floors, taking out the trash and answering phones. Eventually their head designer left, and the owners approached me and wanted to know if I’d like to be a paid intern.” He said he immediately “fell in love with flowers” and let them take him from “coast to coast.” His very next stop, though, was Michal Evans Floral Design in Atlanta. “When I was working with him, it opened up a whole new genre of floral design,” Martin said. “I got to work with a lot of European blooms we bought directly from the Dutch market.” Martin then began to travel, first to New Jersey where he got “a taste of how the Northerners design their flowers.” But the epitome of his career began when he landed in Los Angeles in 2000. “When I first moved to Los Angeles, I was the personal assistant for Tom Ford, who was the creative director for Merv Griffin Productions,” he said. “That was an offshoot of Merv Griffin Enterprises, so we did what they did — a lot of the studio parties, the Golden Globes, Warner Bros., HBO parties.” December 2019 | HOME | 7
After that, Martin had a brief stint at Four Seasons Hotel at Beverly Hills before becoming the assistant manager for Sandy Rose Floral in Los Angeles. “We did specifically floral decor for television and movie productions,� he said about his time at Sandy Rose Floral. “The first movie I worked on was The Princess Diaries 2.� Some of the other movies he helped with included “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest� and “Spider-Man 2.� He also designed the sets for TV shows like “Days of Our Lives,� “Desperate Housewives� and “The Office.� “It was a lot of fun, and it really helped expand my creativity even more,� he said, mentioning he had to use a different skillset for each production. “To do flowers for ‘Mad Men,’ for example, you had to make sure that they were coordinating with the timeline as opposed to working on a science fiction futuristic set where you had to use a little bit more of a larger, more interesting design aesthetic. It was just a wonderful way for me to continue to grow.� After 15 years, Martin moved to Saratoga Springs in New York where he opened his own business. He grew tired of the cold weather, though, and came back to Georgia in June of 2018. “My family goes back two generations here in White County on both my mom’s and my dad’s side,� he said. “It was a no-brainer to come back here.� And it was also a no-brainer to continue his career locally, especially since he had gained so much knowledge from traveling. “To be quite honest with you, it’s the only thing I know how to do really well,� he said about being a florist, mentioning he might even open a retail location one day. “I’ve been so blessed with being able to experience so many wonderful opportunities. It’s not a figure most would expect from a county in which unemployment is relatively low, currently hovering around 2.4 percent. Yet four out of every ten residents in Hall County struggle to meet basic needs such as food, clothing and healthcare. That figure published in the United Way of Hall County 2018-2019 Annual Report. Do residents get the help they need? According to United Way of Hall County President and Chief Professional Officer, Jessica Dudley only to a point; there’s still plenty of work to be done.

“As we continue to address the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors, the community consistently rises to the challenges brought forth. I can honestly say that I have never been in another community like it.”

ichelle Prater, President and Chief Executive Officer of the North Georgia Community Foundation, oversees a philanthropic region of 15 counties. Her organization, too, receives its biggest support from Hall County. “Of the almost 500 charitable funds that we administer, two-thirds of them are represented by people or organizations in Hall County,” she confirmed. Why? Both ladies believe generosity is simply Hall County’s imprint. Business campaigns and individual giving are each successful. For example, in this year’s annual campaign, the United Way of Hall County received $817,207 from the top 10 businesses and companies. In addition, hundreds of residents also gave individual gifts, many in the thousands. Nineteen couples and individuals donated $10,000 or more a piece. The top ten business contributions came from Publix Super Markets, Northeast Georgia Health Systems, Fieldale Farms, Wilheit Packaging, Conditioned Air Systems, Hall County School System, United Parcel Service (UPS), Gainesville City School System, United Community Bank and Longstreet Clinic. But even with such generosity, a growing need persists. “This year, across the region, we have seen Education and Health Care as the program areas receiving the greatest support,” said Prater. “We recently awarded $152,895 to 27 non-profit organizations and over half of these organizations serve the Gainesville-Hall County area.” Along that same vein, in August, the Melvin Douglas and Victoria Kay Ivester Foundation announced a $2.2 million contribution to the Hall County School District’s Early College program. The initiative teams professors from Brenau University, the University of North Georgia and Lanier Technical College with
Hall County Schools’ early college campus, allowing students to earn college credit while completing their high school diplomas. Doug Ivester, the director of the foundation, is a former executive of The Coca-Cola Co. and a Hall County native. “My dad would have taken great pride in each student’s achievement and would have been their biggest cheerleader,” Ivester said in a release. Example after example shows a community not only giving money but backing their donations with the philanthropy of doing. The Good News Clinic, for instance, started when David Westfall and other concerned local physicians realized not every county resident could afford quality health care. That was back in 1978.What started as a series of lunch hour discussions years ago, today provides thousands of residents with health care and dental treatment. And while health care is a key priority for Hall County’s philanthropic climate, mental and behavioral health is also becoming a community concern when individuals do not receive the treatment they need and deserve. The United Way of Hall County initially launched an initiative called “One Hall,” to hold consistent conversations on education, health care and financial stability. Now, the conversations will also include mental and behavioral health. “The harsh reality is that the population to mental health provider ratio in Hall County is 1350:1 compared to 330:1 for top US performers. And the Hall County suicide rate is 13.1 per 100,000 compared to the State benchmark of 11.9,” said Dudley. “One Hall is coming together and is in the early stages of some big projects that will provide a great opportunity for support.” H
